El sueño de Nabucodonosor
2 Durante el segundo año[a] en que Nabucodonosor fue rey tuvo varios sueños que lo preocuparon y lo asustaron tanto que no podía dormir. 2 Entonces mandó llamar a todos los adivinos, hechiceros, magos y sabios para que le interpretaran lo que había soñado. Todos se presentaron ante el rey y 3 él les dijo:
—Tuve un sueño que me tiene preocupado y necesito urgentemente saber lo que significa.
4 Entonces los caldeos le respondieron al rey en idioma arameo[b]:
—¡Viva el rey por siempre! Estamos aquí para servirle, cuéntenos su sueño y le diremos lo que significa.
5 —Yo no les voy a contar nada. Ustedes deben decirme qué fue lo que soñé y además qué significa. Si no me lo dicen, los haré pedazos y destrozaré sus casas hasta que queden convertidas en ruinas. 6 Pero si me cuentan el sueño y su significado, los recompensaré con regalos y honor. Así que díganme el sueño y su significado.
7 Los caldeos le respondieron nuevamente diciendo:
—Su majestad, somos sus servidores. Cuéntenos el sueño y le diremos qué significa.
8 Y el rey les dijo:
—Ustedes sólo están ganando tiempo porque saben que no les voy a decir nada. 9 Si no me dicen el sueño serán castigados, pues se han puesto de acuerdo para mentir esperando que pase el tiempo. Tienen que contarme el sueño para que yo pueda estar seguro de que el significado que me dirán es el verdadero.
10 Los caldeos le respondieron:
—Nadie en este mundo tiene el poder de hacer lo que el rey está pidiendo. Además, ningún rey por más poder o grandeza que tenga, ha pedido algo así a ningún hechicero, adivino o caldeo. 11 Lo que el rey está pidiendo es muy complicado y difícil, sólo los dioses podrían revelar un sueño de otra persona y decir su significado. Pero los dioses no viven con los humanos.
12 El rey se enojó mucho con esa respuesta y condenó a muerte a todos los sabios de Babilonia. 13 La orden del rey fue anunciada públicamente y los guardias del rey salieron a buscar a Daniel y a sus compañeros para matarlos a ellos también.
14 Arioc era el jefe de los guardias y era el encargado de matar a los sabios de Babilonia, pero Daniel le envió un mensaje 15 en el que le preguntaba:
—Arioc, tú que eres el representante del rey, explícame por qué esta orden del rey es tan urgente y severa.
Arioc le respondió explicando la orden. 16 Entonces, Daniel fue y le pidió al rey algún tiempo para poder explicarle el significado del sueño. 17 Luego Daniel volvió a casa y les contó a sus compañeros Ananías, Misael y Azarías todo lo que estaba pasando. 18 Entonces pidieron que el Dios del cielo tuviera compasión de ellos y les revelara el secreto para que no tuvieran que morir con los demás sabios de Babilonia. 19 Esa noche Daniel tuvo una visión y Dios le reveló el significado del secreto. Entonces Daniel alabó al Dios del cielo 20 diciendo:
«¡Alabado sea el nombre de Dios por siempre!
¡A él pertenecen el poder y la sabiduría!
21 Él cambia los tiempos y las estaciones,
pone y quita reyes.
Da sabiduría a los sabios
e inteligencia a los expertos.
22 Él revela los secretos más profundos;
conoce todo lo que hay en la oscuridad
porque la luz vive junto a él.
23 Dios de mis antepasados te doy gracias y te alabo
porque tú me has dado sabiduría y poder;
me revelaste lo que te pedía.
¡Me diste a conocer el sueño del rey!»
Daniel cuenta el sueño y su significado
24 Después, Daniel fue a ver a Arioc, quien tenía la orden de matar a los adivinos de Babilonia, y le dijo:
—No mates a los adivinos de Babilonia.[c] Llévame a ver al rey y le explicaré el sentido del sueño.
25 Así que Arioc y Daniel fueron rápidamente a ver al rey. Cuando llegaron, Arioc le dijo al rey:
—He encontrado entre los judíos deportados a un hombre que puede interpretar el sueño del rey.
26 Entonces el rey le dijo a Daniel, al que llamaban Baltasar:
—¿De verdad eres capaz de contarme el sueño que tuve y lo que significa?
27 Daniel respondió:
—Ninguno de los sabios, hechiceros, adivinos o magos puede revelar este secreto al rey, 28 pero hay un Dios en el cielo que sí revela secretos. Él le ha revelado a usted, rey Nabucodonosor, lo que sucederá al final de los tiempos. Esto es lo que vio usted cuando estaba acostado: 29 cuando usted descansaba en su cama pensó en lo que podría ocurrir en el futuro. Dios puede revelar secretos, y él le ha mostrado a usted lo que va a suceder. 30 En cuanto a mí, no es que yo sea más sabio que otros. Si se me ha revelado el secreto es para que le explique su sentido al rey y así pueda usted entender lo que pasó por su mente.
31 »Majestad, en su sueño usted vio una estatua muy grande frente a usted. Era una estatua enorme y muy brillante pero su aspecto causaba terror. 32 La cabeza de la estatua era de oro. Los hombros y los brazos eran de plata. El vientre y los muslos eran de bronce. 33 Las piernas eran de hierro y los pies eran en parte de hierro y en parte de barro. 34 Mientras la miraba, una roca se desprendió sin que nadie la moviera y golpeó a la estatua en sus pies de hierro y barro y los pulverizó. 35 En seguida, todo el barro, el hierro, el bronce, la plata y el oro se despedazaron y se volvieron polvo. Parecía como el polvo que sobra cuando se trilla el trigo en verano, pero el viento se lo llevó todo sin dejar rastro. Luego la roca se convirtió en una gran montaña[d] que ocupó toda la tierra.
36 »Ese fue el sueño, y ahora le voy a decir al rey lo que significa. 37 Usted es el más importante de los reyes. El Dios de los cielos lo ha elegido y le ha dado poder y riquezas. 38 Dios lo ha puesto al mando de los hombres, de los animales salvajes y de las aves del cielo. Usted es esa cabeza de oro de la estatua. 39 Después de usted vendrá otro reino, pero ese reino no será tan importante como el suyo. Luego vendrá un tercer reino de bronce que gobernará sobre toda la tierra. 40 Después habrá un cuarto reino que será tan fuerte como el hierro. Y así como el hierro es más fuerte y destroza todo, de igual manera ese cuarto reino destrozará a todos los demás.
41 »Pero usted vio que los pies y los dedos de la estatua eran en parte de hierro y en parte de barro. Pues eso quiere decir que este reino estará dividido y tendrá sólo un poco de la estabilidad del hierro porque usted vio que el hierro estaba mezclado con el barro. 42 Es decir que así como parte de los pies y de los dedos eran de barro y la otra parte era de hierro, de igual forma el reino será en parte fuerte y en parte débil. 43 Y así como usted vio que se mezclaban el hierro y el barro, también los pueblos se mezclarán entre sí. Pero por más que se mezclen no serán un solo pueblo, como tampoco el hierro y el barro se mezclan totalmente. 44 Y durante ese tiempo, el Dios del cielo creará un reino eterno que no podrá ser destruido. Ese reino no quedará en manos de extraños. Al contrario, ese reino destruirá y superará a todos los demás reinos. ¡Es un reino que durará para siempre! 45 Majestad, usted vio una roca que se desprendió de la montaña sin que ninguna mano la empujara. Esa roca destrozó el hierro, el bronce, la plata y el oro. Eso significa que el gran Dios le estaba mostrando lo que pasará en el futuro. Ese es el sueño y la interpretación que es completamente cierta».
46 Enseguida, el rey Nabucodonosor se arrodilló ante Daniel y lo alabó. Además ordenó que se preparara una ofrenda de incienso y fragancias en honor de Daniel. 47 El rey dijo:
—En realidad tu Dios es el más importante y poderoso. Es el Señor de todos los reyes y el que revela los secretos. Él fue quien hizo posible que tú me revelaras a mí este secreto.
48 El rey le dio a Daniel muchos regalos y lo nombró jefe de la provincia de Babilonia y de todos los demás adivinos y sabios de Babilonia. 49 Daniel le pidió al rey que nombrara también a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednego para ocupar cargos importantes en la provincia de Babilonia. El rey hizo lo que Daniel le pidió y Daniel se convirtió en uno de los funcionarios más importantes del rey.

El sueño de Nabucodonosor
2 1-2 En cierta ocasión, Nabucodonosor tuvo unos sueños muy extraños, y se quedó tan inquieto que ya ni dormir podía. Entonces mandó llamar a todos los sabios y adivinos que había en su reino, pues quería que le dijeran qué significado tenían sus sueños. Cuando esto sucedió, Nabucodonosor llevaba dos años de ser rey. Los sabios y adivinos se presentaron ante el rey, 3 y el rey les dijo:
—Tuve un sueño, y me preocupa no saber lo que significa.
4 Como los sabios hablaban arameo, le contestaron al rey en ese idioma:
—Nosotros estamos para servir a Su Majestad, y le deseamos muchos años de vida. Si Su Majestad nos cuenta su sueño, nosotros le diremos lo que significa.
5-6 El rey les contestó:
—Ya he tomado una decisión. Si ustedes me dicen lo que soñé y lo que el sueño significa, yo les daré muchos regalos y haré que todos les rindan honores. Pero si no me dicen lo que soñé, ni lo que el sueño significa, mandaré que los partan en pedazos y que conviertan sus casas en basureros. Más les vale, entonces, decirme lo que soñé y lo que quiere decir.
7 Los sabios volvieron a decirle:
—Si Su Majestad nos cuenta lo que soñó, nosotros le diremos lo que significa.
8-9 El rey les dijo:
—Creo que ustedes quieren ganar tiempo. Se están poniendo de acuerdo para decirme puras mentiras. Pero mi decisión no va a cambiar. Díganme qué fue lo que soñé, y así sabré que son capaces de decirme lo que significa. Si no me lo dicen, mandaré que los castiguen a todos.
10 Los sabios se defendieron:
—Nunca ningún rey, por más poderoso que fuera, les ha pedido a sus sabios y adivinos responder a algo tan difícil. Ni hay nadie en el mundo capaz de adivinar lo que Su Majestad quiere saber. 11 Tal vez los dioses podrían darle una respuesta, ¡pero ellos no viven en este mundo!
12 Al oír esto, el rey se enojó mucho y mandó que mataran a todos los sabios que vivían en Babilonia, 13 así que también buscaron a Daniel y a sus amigos, para matarlos.
Daniel le explica al rey su sueño
14 El jefe de los soldados del rey, que se llamaba Arioc, se dispuso a matar a todos los sabios de Babilonia, 15 pero Daniel fue a verlo, y con mucho tacto le preguntó por qué había ordenado el rey matar a todos los sabios.
En cuanto Arioc le explicó la razón de la orden, 16 Daniel fue a hablar con el rey y se comprometió a explicarle el significado del sueño. Pero le dijo que, para eso, necesitaba un poco más de tiempo. 17-18 Después fue a su casa, y allí les contó a sus amigos lo que pasaba. También les pidió que oraran a Dios por él, para que no les pasara nada ni a él ni a ellos, ni a los sabios de Babilonia.
19 Esa misma noche, Dios ayudó a Daniel y le aclaró el misterio del sueño. Entonces Daniel bendijo a Dios con estas palabras:
20 Dios mío,
sólo tú eres sabio y poderoso.
¡Bendito seas por siempre!
21-22 Tú eres el Dios de la historia.
Todo en el mundo sucede
porque quieres que suceda.
A unos los haces reinar,
y a otros los quitas del trono.
Tú haces que los sabios entiendan
los misterios más profundos.
Donde tú te encuentras
no hay lugar para las sombras,
porque la luz eres tú.
23 A ti, Dios de mis padres,
te doy gracias y te alabo,
porque me has hecho entender
qué fue lo que el rey soñó.
24 Después de eso, Daniel fue a ver a Arioc y le dijo: «Antes de que mate usted a alguien, lléveme a ver al rey. Yo le voy a explicar lo que quiere decir su sueño».
25 Enseguida Arioc presentó a Daniel ante el rey, y le dijo: «Tengo aquí a un jovencito, de los que trajimos de Judá. Dice que él puede decir a Su Majestad lo que significa su sueño».
26 En Babilonia conocían a Daniel con el nombre de Beltsasar. Entonces el rey le dijo a Daniel:
—¿Así que tú vas a decirme lo que soñé, y lo que significa mi sueño?
27 Y Daniel le contestó:
—No hay ningún sabio ni adivino capaz de adivinar lo que Su Majestad quiere saber. 28-30 Yo mismo, no soy más sabio que nadie. Pero en el cielo hay un Dios que conoce todos los misterios.
»Mientras Su Majestad dormía, pensaba mucho en el futuro y comenzó a soñar. Pues bien, Dios ha hecho ver a Su Majestad, en esos sueños, lo que está por suceder. Y a mí, me ha dado a conocer el significado de esos sueños.
31 »Su Majestad soñaba que veía una estatua muy grande y fea, la cual le causaba mucho miedo. 32 La cabeza de la estatua era de oro puro, el pecho y los brazos eran de plata, el vientre y los muslos eran de cobre, 33 y las piernas eran de hierro. ¡Pero los pies eran de una mezcla de hierro y barro!
34 »Mientras Su Majestad contemplaba la estatua, una piedra que nadie arrojó vino rodando, golpeó a la estatua en los pies, ¡y la estatua se vino abajo! 35 Todos los metales de la estatua se hicieron polvo. Y enseguida vino un viento muy fuerte, y se llevó todo eso como si fuera paja. Nunca volvió a encontrarse nada de la estatua. Sin embargo, la piedra que golpeó la estatua llegó a ser una gran montaña. ¡Era tan grande que llenaba toda la tierra!
36-38 »Este sueño quiere decir que Su Majestad es el rey más poderoso de todos los reyes. Su Majestad es la cabeza de oro, pues el Dios del cielo lo ha hecho rey y le ha dado mucho poder y mucha honra. También le ha dado poder sobre toda la gente que vive en la tierra, y sobre todos los animales que hay en la tierra y en el cielo.
39 »Después de Su Majestad habrá otro rey, menos importante que usted. Luego vendrá un tercer rey, representado por el cobre, que dominará toda la tierra. 40 Por último, vendrá otro rey que tendrá la fuerza del hierro. Este rey vencerá a los otros reyes, así como el hierro vence a los otros metales.
41-42 »Su Majestad vio en su sueño que los pies de la estatua eran de hierro y de barro. Eso quiere decir que el último reino estará dividido. Será fuerte como el hierro, pero también será débil como el barro. 43 La mezcla de hierro y barro en sus pies quiere decir que este reino tratará de mantenerse unido. Para eso, habrá matrimonios entre las familias de diferentes reinos. Pero así como no es posible unir el hierro con el barro, tampoco será posible que ese reino se mantenga unido.
44 »Sin embargo, en esos días el Dios del cielo enviará a un rey que reinará para siempre, y al que nadie podrá vencer. Al contrario, será él quien destruya a los otros reinos. 45 Eso es lo que significa la piedra que nadie arrojó, y que destruyó la estatua.
»Su Majestad, esto es lo que el gran Dios quiere que usted sepa acerca del futuro. Tanto el sueño como su significado son verdad, y todo pasará como se lo he dicho.
46 Cuando el rey Nabucodonosor oyó esto, se arrojó al suelo con la intención de adorar a Daniel. Además, ordenó que le presentaran a Daniel ofrendas, como si Daniel fuera Dios. 47 Luego le dijo a Daniel:
—No hay duda. Tu Dios es el Dios de todos los dioses; ¡es el rey de todos los reyes! Él lo sabe todo, y por eso tú pudiste explicarme este sueño tan misterioso.
48 Enseguida, el rey le dio muchos regalos costosos, y además lo nombró gobernador de toda Babilonia y jefe de todos los sabios. 49 Entonces Daniel le pidió al rey que pusiera a sus amigos en puestos de mucha importancia. Y así Sadrac, Mesac y Abed-nego llegaron a ser administradores en Babilonia. Daniel, por su parte, se quedó en la corte del rey.

Daniel interpreta el sueño de Nabucodonosor
2 En el segundo año del reinado de Nabucodonosor, tuvo Nabucodonosor sueños, y se perturbó su espíritu, y se le fue el sueño. 2 Hizo llamar el rey a magos, astrólogos, encantadores y caldeos, para que le explicasen sus sueños. Vinieron, pues, y se presentaron delante del rey. 3 Y el rey les dijo: He tenido un sueño, y mi espíritu se ha turbado por saber el sueño. 4 Entonces hablaron los caldeos al rey en lengua aramea: Rey, para siempre vive; di el sueño a tus siervos, y te mostraremos la interpretación. 5 Respondió el rey y dijo a los caldeos: El asunto lo olvidé; si no me mostráis el sueño y su interpretación, seréis hechos pedazos, y vuestras casas serán convertidas en muladares. 6 Y si me mostrareis el sueño y su interpretación, recibiréis de mí dones y favores y gran honra. Decidme, pues, el sueño y su interpretación. 7 Respondieron por segunda vez, y dijeron: Diga el rey el sueño a sus siervos, y le mostraremos la interpretación. 8 El rey respondió y dijo: Yo conozco ciertamente que vosotros ponéis dilaciones, porque veis que el asunto se me ha ido. 9 Si no me mostráis el sueño, una sola sentencia hay para vosotros. Ciertamente preparáis respuesta mentirosa y perversa que decir delante de mí, entre tanto que pasa el tiempo. Decidme, pues, el sueño, para que yo sepa que me podéis dar su interpretación. 10 Los caldeos respondieron delante del rey, y dijeron: No hay hombre sobre la tierra que pueda declarar el asunto del rey; además de esto, ningún rey, príncipe ni señor preguntó cosa semejante a ningún mago ni astrólogo ni caldeo. 11 Porque el asunto que el rey demanda es difícil, y no hay quien lo pueda declarar al rey, salvo los dioses cuya morada no es con la carne.
12 Por esto el rey con ira y con gran enojo mandó que matasen a todos los sabios de Babilonia. 13 Y se publicó el edicto de que los sabios fueran llevados a la muerte; y buscaron a Daniel y a sus compañeros para matarlos. 14 Entonces Daniel habló sabia y prudentemente a Arioc, capitán de la guardia del rey, que había salido para matar a los sabios de Babilonia. 15 Habló y dijo a Arioc capitán del rey: ¿Cuál es la causa de que este edicto se publique de parte del rey tan apresuradamente? Entonces Arioc hizo saber a Daniel lo que había. 16 Y Daniel entró y pidió al rey que le diese tiempo, y que él mostraría la interpretación al rey.
17 Luego se fue Daniel a su casa e hizo saber lo que había a Ananías, Misael y Azarías, sus compañeros, 18 para que pidiesen misericordias del Dios del cielo sobre este misterio, a fin de que Daniel y sus compañeros no pereciesen con los otros sabios de Babilonia. 19 Entonces el secreto fue revelado a Daniel en visión de noche, por lo cual bendijo Daniel al Dios del cielo. 20 Y Daniel habló y dijo: Sea bendito el nombre de Dios de siglos en siglos, porque suyos son el poder y la sabiduría. 21 Él muda los tiempos y las edades; quita reyes, y pone reyes; da la sabiduría a los sabios, y la ciencia a los entendidos. 22 Él revela lo profundo y lo escondido; conoce lo que está en tinieblas, y con él mora la luz. 23 A ti, oh Dios de mis padres, te doy gracias y te alabo, porque me has dado sabiduría y fuerza, y ahora me has revelado lo que te pedimos; pues nos has dado a conocer el asunto del rey.
24 Después de esto fue Daniel a Arioc, al cual el rey había puesto para matar a los sabios de Babilonia, y le dijo así: No mates a los sabios de Babilonia; llévame a la presencia del rey, y yo le mostraré la interpretación.
25 Entonces Arioc llevó prontamente a Daniel ante el rey, y le dijo así: He hallado un varón de los deportados de Judá, el cual dará al rey la interpretación. 26 Respondió el rey y dijo a Daniel, al cual llamaban Beltsasar: ¿Podrás tú hacerme conocer el sueño que vi, y su interpretación? 27 Daniel respondió delante del rey, diciendo: El misterio que el rey demanda, ni sabios, ni astrólogos, ni magos ni adivinos lo pueden revelar al rey. 28 Pero hay un Dios en los cielos, el cual revela los misterios, y él ha hecho saber al rey Nabucodonosor lo que ha de acontecer en los postreros días. He aquí tu sueño, y las visiones que has tenido en tu cama: 29 Estando tú, oh rey, en tu cama, te vinieron pensamientos por saber lo que había de ser en lo por venir; y el que revela los misterios te mostró lo que ha de ser. 30 Y a mí me ha sido revelado este misterio, no porque en mí haya más sabiduría que en todos los vivientes, sino para que se dé a conocer al rey la interpretación, y para que entiendas los pensamientos de tu corazón.
31 Tú, oh rey, veías, y he aquí una gran imagen. Esta imagen, que era muy grande, y cuya gloria era muy sublime, estaba en pie delante de ti, y su aspecto era terrible. 32 La cabeza de esta imagen era de oro fino; su pecho y sus brazos, de plata; su vientre y sus muslos, de bronce; 33 sus piernas, de hierro; sus pies, en parte de hierro y en parte de barro cocido. 34 Estabas mirando, hasta que una piedra fue cortada, no con mano, e hirió a la imagen en sus pies de hierro y de barro cocido, y los desmenuzó. 35 Entonces fueron desmenuzados también el hierro, el barro cocido, el bronce, la plata y el oro, y fueron como tamo de las eras del verano, y se los llevó el viento sin que de ellos quedara rastro alguno. Mas la piedra que hirió a la imagen fue hecha un gran monte que llenó toda la tierra.
36 Este es el sueño; también la interpretación de él diremos en presencia del rey. 37 Tú, oh rey, eres rey de reyes; porque el Dios del cielo te ha dado reino, poder, fuerza y majestad. 38 Y dondequiera que habitan hijos de hombres, bestias del campo y aves del cielo, él los ha entregado en tu mano, y te ha dado el dominio sobre todo; tú eres aquella cabeza de oro. 39 Y después de ti se levantará otro reino inferior al tuyo; y luego un tercer reino de bronce, el cual dominará sobre toda la tierra. 40 Y el cuarto reino será fuerte como hierro; y como el hierro desmenuza y rompe todas las cosas, desmenuzará y quebrantará todo. 41 Y lo que viste de los pies y los dedos, en parte de barro cocido de alfarero y en parte de hierro, será un reino dividido; mas habrá en él algo de la fuerza del hierro, así como viste hierro mezclado con barro cocido. 42 Y por ser los dedos de los pies en parte de hierro y en parte de barro cocido, el reino será en parte fuerte, y en parte frágil. 43 Así como viste el hierro mezclado con barro, se mezclarán por medio de alianzas humanas; pero no se unirán el uno con el otro, como el hierro no se mezcla con el barro. 44 Y en los días de estos reyes el Dios del cielo levantará un reino que no será jamás destruido, ni será el reino dejado a otro pueblo; desmenuzará y consumirá a todos estos reinos, pero él permanecerá para siempre, 45 de la manera que viste que del monte fue cortada una piedra, no con mano, la cual desmenuzó el hierro, el bronce, el barro, la plata y el oro. El gran Dios ha mostrado al rey lo que ha de acontecer en lo por venir; y el sueño es verdadero, y fiel su interpretación.

2 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.
2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.
4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.
5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.
6 But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.
7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.
8 The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.
10 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.
11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.
14 Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:
15 He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.
16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.
17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:
18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.
24 Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.
25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.
26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?
27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;
28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;
29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.
30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.
31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
46 Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him.
47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.
48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.
49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream
2 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams;(A) his mind was troubled(B) and he could not sleep.(C) 2 So the king summoned the magicians,(D) enchanters, sorcerers(E) and astrologers[a](F) to tell him what he had dreamed.(G) When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles(H) me and I want to know what it means.[b]”
4 Then the astrologers answered the king,[c](I) “May the king live forever!(J) Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”
5 The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided:(K) If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces(L) and your houses turned into piles of rubble.(M) 6 But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor.(N) So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”
7 Once more they replied, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”
8 Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: 9 If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty(O) for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me.”(P)
10 The astrologers(Q) answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.(R) 11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods,(S) and they do not live among humans.”
12 This made the king so angry and furious(T) that he ordered the execution(U) of all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.(V)
14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.
17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(W) 18 He urged them to plead for mercy(X) from the God of heaven(Y) concerning this mystery,(Z) so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery(AA) was revealed to Daniel in a vision.(AB) Then Daniel praised the God of heaven(AC) 20 and said:
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;(AD)
wisdom and power(AE) are his.
21 He changes times and seasons;(AF)
he deposes(AG) kings and raises up others.(AH)
He gives wisdom(AI) to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.(AJ)
22 He reveals deep and hidden things;(AK)
he knows what lies in darkness,(AL)
and light(AM) dwells with him.
23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:(AN)
You have given me wisdom(AO) and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.(AP)”
Daniel Interprets the Dream
24 Then Daniel went to Arioch,(AQ) whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.”
25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, “I have found a man among the exiles(AR) from Judah(AS) who can tell the king what his dream means.”
26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar),(AT) “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?”
27 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about,(AU) 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.(AV) He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.(AW) Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind(AX) as you were lying in bed(AY) are these:(AZ)
29 “As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen.(BA) 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed(BB) to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.
31 “Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue,(BC) awesome(BD) in appearance. 32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands.(BE) It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed(BF) them.(BG) 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away(BH) without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain(BI) and filled the whole earth.(BJ)
36 “This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king.(BK) 37 Your Majesty, you are the king of kings.(BL) The God of heaven has given you dominion(BM) and power and might and glory; 38 in your hands he has placed all mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds in the sky. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all.(BN) You are that head of gold.
39 “After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.(BO) 40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything—and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others.(BP) 41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.
44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush(BQ) all those kingdoms(BR) and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.(BS) 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock(BT) cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands(BU)—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.
“The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future.(BV) The dream is true(BW) and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate(BX) before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering(BY) and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods(BZ) and the Lord of kings(CA) and a revealer of mysteries,(CB) for you were able to reveal this mystery.(CC)”
48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high(CD) position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.(CE) 49 Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon,(CF) while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.(CG)
