Daniel 1:8-16
New English Translation

8 But Daniel made up his mind[a] that he would not defile[b] himself with the royal delicacies or the royal wine.[c] He therefore asked the overseer of the court officials for permission not to defile himself. 9 Then God made the overseer of the court officials sympathetic to Daniel.[d] 10 But he[e] responded to Daniel, “I fear my master the king. He is the one who has decided[f] your food and drink. What would happen if he saw that you looked malnourished in comparison to the other young men your age?[g] If that happened,[h] you would endanger my life[i] with the king!” 11 Daniel then spoke to the warden[j] whom the overseer of the court officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 12 “Please test your servants for ten days by providing us with some vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance[k] with that of[l] the young men who are eating the royal delicacies;[m] deal with us[n] in light of what you see.” 14 So the warden[o] agreed to their proposal[p] and tested them for ten[q] days.

15 At the end of the ten days their appearance was better and their bodies were healthier[r] than all the young men who had been eating the royal delicacies. 16 So the warden removed the delicacies and the wine[s] from their diet[t] and gave them a diet of vegetables instead.

Perhaps it had to do with violations of Mosaic law with regard to unclean foods, or perhaps it was food that had been offered to idols. Daniel’s practice in this regard is strikingly different from that of Esther, who was able successfully to conceal her Jewish identity.

  4. Daniel 1:9 tn Heb “Then God granted Daniel loyal love and compassion before the overseer of the court officials.” The expression “loyal love and compassion” is a hendiadys; the two words combine to express one idea.
  5. Daniel 1:10 tn Heb “The overseer of the court officials.” The subject has been specified in the translation for the sake of clarity.
  6. Daniel 1:10 tn Heb “assigned” (see v. 5).
  7. Daniel 1:10 tn Heb “Why should he see your faces thin from the young men who are according to your age?” The term translated “thin” occurs only here and in Gen 40:6, where it appears to refer to a dejected facial expression. The word is related to an Arabic root meaning “be weak.” See HALOT 277 s.v. II זעף.
  8. Daniel 1:10 tn The words “if that happened” are not in the Hebrew text but have been added in the translation for clarity.
  9. Daniel 1:10 tn Heb “my head.” Presumably this is an implicit reference to capital punishment (cf. NCV, TEV, CEV, NLT), although this is not entirely clear.

Daniel’s Resolve

8 Now Daniel resolved[a] that he would not defile himself with the fine food of the king, and with the wine that he drank,[b] and so he requested from the commander of the court officials permission so that he would not defile himself. 9 And God[c] gave Daniel favor and compassion before[d] the commander of the court officials, 10 and the commander of the court officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord, the king, who has determined your food and your drink, for why should[e] he see your face having a worse appearance than the young men who are your age?[f] Then you will endanger my head with the king.” 11 Then[g] Daniel asked the guard[h] whom the commander of the court officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us some of the vegetables,[i] and let us eat and let us drink water. 13 Then[j] let our appearances and the appearance of the young men who are eating the fine food of the king be compared before you,[k] and then deal with your servants according to what you see.”[l] 14 So he agreed to this proposal with them, and he tested them for ten days. 15 And at the end of ten days their appearances appeared better and they were healthier of body than all the young men who were eating the fine food of the king. 16 So[m] the guard continued to withhold[n] their fine food and the wine of their drink, and he gave them[o] vegetables.
