The Resurrection of the Dead

12 “At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book.(A) Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth[a] shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.(B) Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky,[b] and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.(C) But you, Daniel, keep the words secret and the book sealed until the time of the end. Many shall be running back and forth,[c] and evil[d] shall increase.”(D)

Peter and John before the Council

While Peter and John[a] were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came to them,(A) much annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming that in Jesus there is the resurrection of the dead.(B) So they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.(C) But many of those who heard the word believed, and they numbered about five thousand.(D)

The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem,(E) with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John,[b] and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.(F) When they had made the prisoners[c] stand in their midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders,(G) if we are being questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are being asked how this man has been healed,[d] 10 let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,[e] whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead.(H) 11 This Jesus[f] is

‘the stone that was rejected by you, the builders;
    it has become the cornerstone.’[g](I)

12 “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.”(J)

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them as companions of Jesus.(K)

16 “I have said these things to you to keep you from falling away.[a](A) They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God.(B) And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me.(C) But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.

The Work of the Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(D) But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate[b] will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about[c] sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.(E)

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.(F) 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.(G) 14 He will glorify me because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.(H)
