Supremacía de los reyes del sur

2 »Ahora yo te declararé la verdad: He aquí que se levantarán tres reyes más en Persia, y el cuarto se hará de grandes riquezas, más que todos. Y cuando se haya fortalecido con sus riquezas, agitará a todos contra el reino de Grecia. 3 Entonces se levantará un rey valiente, el cual dominará con gran dominio y hará según su propia voluntad. 4 Pero cuando haya prevalecido, su reino será quebrantado y repartido por los cuatro vientos del cielo; pero no a sus descendientes ni según el dominio con que él había dominado, porque su reino será arrancado y será para otros aparte de estos.

5 »El rey del sur se hará fuerte, pero uno de sus príncipes se hará más fuerte que él y dominará con un dominio mayor que el de aquel. 6 Al cabo de unos años harán alianza, y la hija del rey del sur irá al rey del norte para realizar el convenio. Pero ella no podrá retener la fuerza de su brazo ni tampoco prevalecerá él ni su descendencia. Pero en aquel tiempo ella será entregada, junto con los que la habían traído, y con su progenitor y sus partidarios.

7 »Entonces un renuevo de las raíces de ella se levantará en su lugar. Vendrá con un ejército y entrará en la fortaleza del rey del norte. Él hará con ellos según su deseo y predominará. 8 Y aun llevará cautivos a Egipto los dioses de ellos, con sus imágenes y con sus utensilios preciosos de plata y de oro. Durante algunos años él se mantendrá a distancia del rey del norte. 9 Entonces este invadirá el reino del sur, pero se volverá a su propia tierra. 10 Luego sus hijos se alistarán para la guerra y reunirán un ejército de una multitud de soldados que vendrá con su gran fuerza. Inundará, pasará y volverá; llevará la guerra hasta su fortaleza. 11 Por esto se enfurecerá el rey del sur y saldrá para combatir contra el rey del norte. Este se pondrá en campaña con una gran multitud, pero toda aquella gran multitud será entregada en su mano. 12 Y al llevar en cautiverio a la multitud, su corazón se enaltecerá. Derribará a muchos miles, pero no prevalecerá.

Surgimiento de los reyes del norte

13 »El rey del norte volverá a poner en campaña una multitud mayor que la primera vez, y al cabo de unos años vendrá con un gran ejército y con abundantes recursos. 14 En aquellos tiempos se levantarán muchos contra el rey del sur; y hombres violentos de tu pueblo se rebelarán cumpliendo la visión, pero fracasarán. 15 Vendrá, pues, el rey del norte, levantará terraplenes y tomará la ciudad fortificada. Las fuerzas del sur no resistirán; ni siquiera sus tropas escogidas podrán resistir. 16 El que vaya contra él hará según su voluntad; no habrá quien resista ante él. Estará en la tierra gloriosa, la cual será consumida bajo su poder. 17 Luego se dispondrá para venir con el poder de todo su reino y hará convenios con aquel. Le dará una hija de las mujeres para destruirlo, pero no permanecerá ni tendrá resultado.

18 »Después volverá su rostro hacia las costas y tomará muchas de ellas, pero un gobernante pondrá freno a su afrenta y volverá su afrenta sobre él. 19 Luego volverá su rostro hacia las fortalezas de su tierra; pero tropezará y caerá, y no será hallado más.

20 »Entonces lo sucederá en el trono uno que hará pasar un exactor por lo mejor del reino. Pero en pocos días será quebrantado, no con ira ni en batalla.

21 »Lo sucederá en su lugar un hombre vil, al cual no se ha dado el esplendor del reino. Habiendo tranquilidad, vendrá y tomará el reino con intrigas. 22 Y las fuerzas serán completamente arrasadas y quebrantadas delante de él, inclusive el príncipe del pacto. 23 Y después que hayan hecho alianza con él, hará engaño: Subirá y saldrá vencedor con poca gente. 24 Y habiendo tranquilidad, entrará en las partes más fértiles de la provincia y hará lo que no hicieron sus padres ni los padres de sus padres: A sus soldados les repartirá despojo, botín y riquezas; y contra las fortalezas maquinará planes, aunque solo por un tiempo. 25 Despertará sus fuerzas y su corazón contra el rey del sur, con un gran ejército.

»El rey del sur se alistará para la guerra con un ejército grande y muy fuerte; pero no prevalecerá, porque le harán traición. 26 Aun los que comen de su pan lo quebrantarán. Su ejército será destruido y muchos caerán muertos. 27 El corazón de estos dos reyes estará dispuesto para hacer el mal y en la misma mesa hablarán mentira. Pero no servirá de nada, porque el final del tiempo señalado aún no habrá llegado. 28 Él volverá a su tierra con gran riqueza y su corazón estará contra el pacto santo. Hará su voluntad y se volverá a su tierra.

29 »Al tiempo señalado volverá al sur, pero esta vez no le ocurrirá como en la primera, 30 porque contra él vendrán naves de Quitim y él se desanimará. Volverá y se enfurecerá contra el pacto santo y hará su voluntad. Volverá, pues, y se las entenderá con los que han abandonado el pacto santo.

El rey del norte profana el templo

31 »Entonces se levantarán tropas de su parte y contaminarán el santuario, la fortaleza. Quitarán el sacrificio continuo y pondrán la abominación desoladora. 32 Con lisonjas hará pecar a los que violan el pacto, pero el pueblo que conoce a su Dios se esforzará y actuará. 33 Los sabios del pueblo darán sabiduría a muchos, pero caerán a espada y a fuego, en cautividad y despojo por algunos días. 34 Y cuando caigan, serán ayudados con poca ayuda; y muchos se juntarán a ellos con lisonjas. 35 Algunos de los sabios caerán para ser purificados, limpiados y emblanquecidos hasta el tiempo señalado; porque aún hay plazo para estos.

36 »El rey hará su voluntad. Se ensoberbecerá y se engrandecerá sobre todo dios. Contra el Dios de dioses hablará cosas sorprendentes. Será prosperado hasta que sea consumada la ira, porque lo que está determinado se cumplirá. 37 No hará caso del dios de sus padres ni del más apreciado por las mujeres. No hará caso de dios alguno, porque se engrandecerá sobre todo. 38 Más bien, honrará al dios de las fortalezas, dios que sus padres no conocieron. Lo honrará con oro, plata, piedras preciosas y con cosas de gran precio. 39 Con un dios extraño actuará contra las fortalezas más fuertes y hará crecer en gloria a los que lo reconozcan. Les dará dominio sobre muchos, y por precio repartirá la tierra.

El final del rey del norte

40 »Pero al cabo del tiempo, el rey del sur lo atacará. Y el rey del norte embestirá contra él como tempestad, con carros, gente de a caballo y muchos navíos. Entrará por las tierras, inundará y pasará. 41 Entonces penetrará en la tierra gloriosa y muchas provincias caerán. Pero Edom, Moab y la mayoría de los hijos de Amón escaparán de su mano. 42 Asimismo, extenderá su mano a las otras tierras y la tierra de Egipto no escapará. 43 Se apoderará de los tesoros de oro y de plata, y de todas las cosas preciosas de Egipto; y los de Libia y de Etiopía estarán a sus pies. 44 Pero las noticias del oriente y del norte lo espantarán. Saldrá con gran ira para destruir y aniquilar a muchos. 45 Instalará sus tiendas reales entre los mares, y en el glorioso monte santo. Entonces llegará a su fin y no tendrá quien le ayude.

Kungarna i söder och norr

2 Men nu ska jag förklara sanningen för dig. Ytterligare tre kungar kommer att uppstå i Persien och efterträdas av en fjärde, mycket rikare än de andra. Styrkt av sin rikedom kommer han att mobilisera alla mot Grekland. 3 Då uppstår en mäktig kung som regerar med stor makt och gör som han vill. 4 Men så snart han har framträtt, faller hans rike samman och delas i de fyra väderstrecken. Det kommer inte att ges till hans efterkommande och inte heller vara lika mäktigt som när han hade makten. Hans rike utplånas och ges åt andra.

5 Kungen i söder blir mäktig, men en av hans furstar blir ännu mäktigare än han och regerar över hans rike med stor makt. 6 Några år senare allierar de sig med varandra. Dottern till kungen i södern kommer till kungen i norr för en allians, men hon förlorar sitt inflytande, och inte heller får han och hans makt bestå. Hon blir då utlämnad, tillsammans med sitt följe och sin far och sina anhängare.

7 Men en ättling ur hennes släktled kommer att uppstå i stället. Han går till anfall mot nordkungens armé och tränger sig in i hans fästning, strider mot dem och besegrar dem. 8 Han kommer också att föra med sig deras gudar och gjutna bilder och värdefulla föremål av guld och silver till Egypten. Under några år kommer han att låta nordkungen vara i fred. 9 Nordkungen kommer att invadera sydkungens rike men återvända sedan tillbaka till sitt eget land. 10 Hans söner gör då krigsförberedelser och samlar en enorm armé, drar fram som en stormflod och för fram striden ända till sydkungens fästning.

11 Då drar sydkungen i förbittring ut och strider mot nordkungen, som uppbådar en stor armé men blir överlämnad åt den förre. 12 När armén är borta, fylls sydkungen av stolthet och slår ner tusentals, men hans triumf blir inte långvarig. 13 Kungen i norr samlar en ännu större armé än den förra, och efter några år rycker han fram med en stor armé och utrustning.

14 Vid samma tid kommer många att resa sig mot sydkungen. Våldsmän bland ditt eget folk reser sig för att fullfölja synen, men de kommer att falla. 15 Kungen i norr kommer och bygger en belägringsvall och intar en befäst stad. Armén i söder kan inte hålla stånd, inte ens deras bästa trupper kan det. 16 Invaderaren gör som han vill, utan att någon kan göra motstånd. Han etablerar sig i det härliga landet och lägger det under sig. 17 Han bestämmer sig för att komma med hela sitt rikes makt, med avsikt att alliera sig med sydkungen. Han ger honom en dotter till hustru, för att ruinera riket. Men det lyckas inte, det hjälper inte. 18 Sedan vänder han sig mot kustländerna och intar flera av dem. Men en befälhavare stoppar hans hån och vänder det mot honom själv. 19 Han vänder sedan tillbaka till sitt eget lands fästningar igen men vacklar och faller och finns inte mer.

20 Hans efterträdare sänder en skatteindrivare genom landet som är hans rikes prydnad. Men efter en kort tid krossas han, dock varken genom vrede eller krig.

21 Den som efterträder honom är en usel man som saknar kungavärdighet. Han invaderar riket i tysthet och tar makten genom intriger. 22 Armén som väller fram kommer att svepas undan inför honom, och till och med förbundsfursten krossas. 23 Den som har allierat sig med honom agerar han svekfullt mot, och han kommer till makten med bara ett fåtal människor. 24 När de rikaste provinserna lever i trygghet invaderar han dem och gör något som varken hans fäder eller förfäder gjort. Han delar ut byte och rov och gods bland sina anhängare och smider under en tid onda planer mot befästningar.

25 Han samlar sin kraft och sitt mod med en stor armé mot sydkungen. Denne mobiliserar också en väldig armé för krig men kan inte hålla stånd på grund av en sammansvärjning mot honom. 26 De som äter vid hans bord vill krossa honom. Hans armé kommer att svepas bort och många att stupa i striden. 27 Dessa två kungar har ont i sinnet, sitter vid samma bord och ljuger för varandra, dock utan någon framgång, för slutet kommer vid den bestämda tiden. 28 Nordkungen återvänder hem till sitt land med stora rikedomar, men med ont i sinnet agerar han mot det heliga förbundet och återvänder sedan till sitt land.

29 Vid den bestämda tiden invaderar han än en gång sydlandet, men nu blir utgången en annan än förra gången. 30 Fartyg från Kittim[a] kommer emot honom, och han blir modlös. Han vänder tillbaka och riktar vreden mot det heliga förbundet. Han återvänder alltså och ställer sig välvillig gentemot dem som övergett det heliga förbundet.

31 Hans beväpnade styrkor kommer och vanhelgar tempelborgen, avskaffar det dagliga offret och sätter upp den vanhelgande vidrigheten. 32 Han lockar med smicker dem till avfall som har våldfört sig på förbundet. Men de som känner sin Gud står fasta och håller ut.

33 De insiktsfulla ska undervisa många men ändå under en tid falla för svärd och eld, bli fängslade och utsatta för plundring. 34 När de faller får de en viss hjälp, och många hycklare sluter sig till dem. 35 En del av de insiktsfulla kommer att falla, för att de ska förädlas, renas och luttras intill den sista tiden. För den bestämda tiden är ännu inte inne.

36 Kungen kommer att göra som han vill, upphöja sig själv, sätta sig själv över varje gud och tala oerhörda ting mot gudars Gud. Han lyckas fram tills att vredens tid är ute, för det som är bestämt måste ske. 37 Han visar ingen aktning för sina förfäders gudar och inte heller för den gud som kvinnor älskar eller någon annan gud, utan upphöjer sig själv över dem allesammans. 38 I stället ärar han fästningarnas gud, en gud som hans förfäder inte kände till, med guld och silver, ädelstenar och dyrbara gåvor. 39 Han agerar mot de starkaste fästningar med en främmande guds hjälp och ger dem stor ära som bekänner sig till honom. Han gör dem till härskare över många och delar ut land som belöning.

40 Men vid tidens slut drabbar sydkungen samman med honom, och kungen från norr stormar fram mot honom med vagnar och ryttare och en stor flotta. Han invaderar flera länder och sveper fram som en stormflod. 41 Han invaderar det härliga landet, och många länder faller. Men Moab, Edom och större delen av ammoniterna räddar sig undan honom. 42 Han utökar sin makt över många länder, och inte heller Egypten slipper undan. 43 Han lägger beslag på skatter av guld och silver och Egyptens alla dyrbarheter. Libyer och kushiter underkastar sig honom.

44 Men rykten från öster och norr skrämmer honom, och i ursinne drar han ut för att förgöra och förinta många. 45 Han slår upp sina kungliga tält mellan havet och helgedomens härliga berg. Men han kommer att gå under, och ingen kan hjälpa honom.

The Kings of the South and the North

2 “Now then, I tell you the truth:(B) Three more kings will arise in Persia, and then a fourth, who will be far richer than all the others. When he has gained power by his wealth, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.(C) 3 Then a mighty king will arise, who will rule with great power and do as he pleases.(D) 4 After he has arisen, his empire will be broken up and parceled out toward the four winds of heaven.(E) It will not go to his descendants, nor will it have the power he exercised, because his empire will be uprooted(F) and given to others.

5 “The king of the South will become strong, but one of his commanders will become even stronger than he and will rule his own kingdom with great power. 6 After some years, they will become allies. The daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North to make an alliance, but she will not retain her power, and he and his power[a] will not last. In those days she will be betrayed, together with her royal escort and her father[b] and the one who supported her.

7 “One from her family line will arise to take her place. He will attack the forces of the king of the North(G) and enter his fortress; he will fight against them and be victorious. 8 He will also seize their gods,(H) their metal images and their valuable articles of silver and gold and carry them off to Egypt.(I) For some years he will leave the king of the North alone. 9 Then the king of the North will invade the realm of the king of the South but will retreat to his own country. 10 His sons will prepare for war and assemble a great army, which will sweep on like an irresistible flood(J) and carry the battle as far as his fortress.

11 “Then the king of the South will march out in a rage and fight against the king of the North, who will raise a large army, but it will be defeated.(K) 12 When the army is carried off, the king of the South will be filled with pride and will slaughter many thousands, yet he will not remain triumphant. 13 For the king of the North will muster another army, larger than the first; and after several years, he will advance with a huge army fully equipped.

14 “In those times many will rise against the king of the South. Those who are violent among your own people will rebel in fulfillment of the vision, but without success. 15 Then the king of the North will come and build up siege ramps(L) and will capture a fortified city. The forces of the South will be powerless to resist; even their best troops will not have the strength to stand. 16 The invader will do as he pleases;(M) no one will be able to stand against him.(N) He will establish himself in the Beautiful Land and will have the power to destroy it.(O) 17 He will determine to come with the might of his entire kingdom and will make an alliance with the king of the South. And he will give him a daughter in marriage in order to overthrow the kingdom, but his plans[c] will not succeed(P) or help him. 18 Then he will turn his attention to the coastlands(Q) and will take many of them, but a commander will put an end to his insolence and will turn his insolence back on him.(R) 19 After this, he will turn back toward the fortresses of his own country but will stumble and fall,(S) to be seen no more.(T)

20 “His successor will send out a tax collector to maintain the royal splendor.(U) In a few years, however, he will be destroyed, yet not in anger or in battle.

21 “He will be succeeded by a contemptible(V) person who has not been given the honor of royalty.(W) He will invade the kingdom when its people feel secure, and he will seize it through intrigue. 22 Then an overwhelming army will be swept away(X) before him; both it and a prince of the covenant will be destroyed.(Y) 23 After coming to an agreement with him, he will act deceitfully,(Z) and with only a few people he will rise to power. 24 When the richest provinces feel secure, he will invade them and will achieve what neither his fathers nor his forefathers did. He will distribute plunder, loot and wealth among his followers.(AA) He will plot the overthrow of fortresses—but only for a time.

25 “With a large army he will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will wage war with a large and very powerful army, but he will not be able to stand because of the plots devised against him. 26 Those who eat from the king’s provisions will try to destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall in battle. 27 The two kings, with their hearts bent on evil,(AB) will sit at the same table and lie(AC) to each other, but to no avail, because an end will still come at the appointed time.(AD) 28 The king of the North will return to his own country with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant. He will take action against it and then return to his own country.

29 “At the appointed time he will invade the South again, but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before. 30 Ships of the western coastlands(AE) will oppose him, and he will lose heart.(AF) Then he will turn back and vent his fury(AG) against the holy covenant. He will return and show favor to those who forsake the holy covenant.

31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice.(AH) Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation.(AI) 32 With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist(AJ) him.

33 “Those who are wise will instruct(AK) many, though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered.(AL) 34 When they fall, they will receive a little help, and many who are not sincere(AM) will join them. 35 Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined,(AN) purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.

The King Who Exalts Himself

36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself(AO) above every god and will say unheard-of things(AP) against the God of gods.(AQ) He will be successful until the time of wrath(AR) is completed, for what has been determined must take place.(AS) 37 He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. 38 Instead of them, he will honor a god of fortresses; a god unknown to his ancestors he will honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will distribute the land at a price.[d]

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South(AT) will engage him in battle, and the king of the North will storm(AU) out against him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood.(AV) 41 He will also invade the Beautiful Land.(AW) Many countries will fall, but Edom,(AX) Moab(AY) and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand. 42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt,(AZ) with the Libyans(BA) and Cushites[e] in submission. 44 But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. 45 He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at[f] the beautiful holy mountain.(BB) Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.
