11 Y EN el año primero de Darío el de Media, yo estuve para animarlo y fortalecerlo.
2 Y ahora yo te mostraré la verdad. He aquí que aun habrá tres reyes en Persia, y el cuarto se hará de grandes riquezas más que todos; y fortificándose con sus riquezas, despertará á todos contra el reino de Javán.
3 Levantaráse luego un rey valiente, el cual se enseñoreará sobre gran dominio, y hará su voluntad.
4 Pero cuando estará enseñoreado, será quebrantado su reino, y repartido por los cuatro vientos del cielo; y no á sus descendientes, ni según el señorío con que él se enseñoreó: porque su reino será arrancado, y para otros fuera de aquellos.
5 Y haráse fuerte el rey del mediodía: mas uno de los príncipes de aquél le sobrepujará, y se hará poderoso; su señorío será grande señorío.
6 Y al cabo de años se concertarán, y la hija del rey del mediodía vendrá al rey del norte para hacer los conciertos. Empero ella no podrá retener la fuerza del brazo: ni permanecerá él, ni su brazo; porque será entregada ella, y los que la habían traído, asimismo su hijo, y los que estaban de parte de ella en aquel tiempo.
7 Mas del renuevo de sus raíces se levantará uno sobre su silla, y vendrá con ejército, y entrará en la fortaleza del rey del norte, y hará en ellos á su arbitrio, y predominará.
8 Y aun los dioses de ellos, con sus príncipes, con sus vasos preciosos de plata y de oro, llevará cautivos á Egipto: y por años se mantendrá él contra el rey del norte.
9 Así entrará en el reino el rey del mediodía, y volverá á su tierra.
10 Mas los hijos de aquél se airarán y reunirán multitud de grandes ejércitos: y vendrá á gran priesa, é inundará, y pasará, y tornará, y llegará con ira hasta su fortaleza.
11 Por lo cual se enfurecerá el rey del mediodía, y saldrá, y peleará con el mismo rey del norte; y pondrá en campo gran multitud, y toda aquella multitud será entregada en su mano.
12 Y la multitud se ensoberbecerá, elevaráse su corazón, y derribará muchos millares; mas no prevalecerá.
13 Y el rey del norte volverá á poner en campo mayor multitud que primero, y á cabo del tiempo de años vendrá á gran priesa con grande ejército y con muchas riquezas.
14 Y en aquellos tiempos se levantarán muchos contra el rey del mediodía; é hijos de disipadores de tu pueblo se levantarán para confirmar la profecía, y caerán.
15 Vendrá pues el rey del norte, y fundará baluartes, y tomará la ciudad fuerte; y los brazos del mediodía no podrán permanecer, ni su pueblo escogido, ni habrá fortaleza que pueda resistir.
16 Y el que vendrá contra él, hará á su voluntad, ni habrá quien se le pueda parar delante; y estará en la tierra deseable, la cual será consumida en su poder.
17 Pondrá luego su rostro para venir con el poder de todo su reino; y hará con aquél cosas rectas, y darále una hija de mujeres para trastornarla: mas no estará ni será por él.
18 Volverá después su rostro á las islas, y tomará muchas; mas un príncipe le hará parar su afrenta, y aun tornará sobre él su oprobio.
19 Luego volverá su rostro á las fortalezas de su tierra: mas tropezará y caerá, y no parecerá más.
20 Entonces sucederá en su silla uno que hará pasar exactor por la gloria del reino; mas en pocos días será quebrantado, no en enojo, ni en batalla.
21 Y sucederá en su lugar un vil, al cual no darán la honra del reino: vendrá empero con paz, y tomará el reino con halagos.
22 Y con los brazos de inundación serán inundados delante de él, y serán quebrantados; y aun también el príncipe del pacto.
23 Y después de los conciertos con él, él hará engaño, y subirá, y saldrá vencedor con poca gente.
24 Estando la provincia en paz y en abundancia, entrará y hará lo que no hicieron sus padres, ni los padres de sus padres; presa, y despojos, y riquezas repartirá á sus soldados; y contra las fortalezas formará sus designios: y esto por tiempo.
25 Y despertará sus fuerzas y su corazón contra el rey del mediodía con grande ejército: y el rey del mediodía se moverá á la guerra con grande y muy fuerte ejército; mas no prevalecerá, porque le harán traición.
26 Aun los que comerán su pan, le quebrantarán; y su ejército será destruído, y caerán muchos muertos.
27 Y el corazón de estos dos reyes será para hacer mal, y en una misma mesa tratarán mentira: mas no servirá de nada, porque el plazo aun no es llegado.
28 Y volveráse á su tierra con grande riqueza, y su corazón será contra el pacto santo: hará pues, y volveráse á su tierra.
29 Al tiempo señalado tornará al mediodía; mas no será la postrera venida como la primera.
30 Porque vendrán contra él naves de Chîttim, y él se contristará, y se volverá, y enojaráse contra el pacto santo, y hará: volveráse pues, y pensará en los que habrán desamparado el santo pacto.
31 Y serán puestos brazos de su parte; y contaminarán el santuario de fortaleza, y quitarán el continuo sacrificio, y pondrán la abominación espantosa.
32 Y con lisonjas hará pecar á los violadores del pacto: mas el pueblo que conoce á su Dios, se esforzará, y hará.
33 Y los sabios del pueblo darán sabiduría á muchos: y caerán á cuchillo y á fuego, en cautividad y despojo, por días.
34 Y en su caer serán ayudados de pequeño socorro: y muchos se juntarán á ellos con lisonjas.
35 Y algunos de los sabios caerán para ser purgados, y limpiados, y emblanquecidos, hasta el tiempo determinado: porque aun para esto hay plazo.
36 Y el rey hará á su voluntad; y se ensoberbecerá, y se engrandecerá sobre todo dios: y contra el Dios de los dioses hablará maravillas, y será prosperado, hasta que sea consumada la ira: porque hecha está determinación.
37 Y del Dios de sus padres no se cuidará, ni del amor de las mujeres: ni se cuidará de dios alguno, porque sobre todo se engrandecerá.
38 Mas honrará en su lugar al dios Mauzim, dios que sus padres no conocieron: honrarálo con oro, y plata, y piedras preciosas, y con cosas de gran precio.
39 Y con el dios ajeno que conocerá, hará á los baluartes de Mauzim crecer en gloria: y harálos enseñorear sobre muchos, y por interés repartirá la tierra.
40 Empero al cabo del tiempo el rey del mediodía se acorneará con él; y el rey del norte levantará contra él como tempestad, con carros y gente de á caballo, y muchos navíos; y entrará por las tierras, é inundará, y pasará.
41 Y vendrá á la tierra deseable, y muchas provincias caerán; mas éstas escaparán de su mano: Edom, y Moab, y lo primero de los hijos de Ammón.
42 Asimismo extenderá su mano á las otras tierras, y no escapará el país de Egipto.
43 Y se apoderará de los tesoros de oro y plata, y de todas las cosas preciosas de Egipto, de Libia, y Etiopía por donde pasará.
44 Mas nuevas de oriente y del norte lo espantarán; y saldrá con grande ira para destruir y matar muchos.
45 Y plantará la tiendas de su palacio entre los mares, en el monte deseable del santuario; y vendrá hasta su fin, y no tendrá quien le ayude.

11 Denn im 1. Regierungsjahr des Mederkönigs Darius habe ich ihm Hilfe und Schutz gegeben.«
Machtkämpfe zwischen den Königen des Nordens und des Südens
2 »Was ich dir nun offenbare, wird ganz bestimmt eintreffen: Drei weitere Könige werden in Persien regieren, bis ein vierter die Herrschaft übernimmt, der seine Vorgänger an Glanz und Reichtum weit übertrifft. Auf dem Gipfel seiner Macht bietet er alle Kräfte gegen Griechenland auf.
3 Nach ihm kommt ein bedeutender König, der so mächtig ist, dass er alles tun kann, was er will. 4 Doch auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Macht zerbricht seine Herrschaft, und sein Reich zerfällt in vier Teile, die nach Norden, Süden, Osten und Westen hin liegen und viel schwächer sind als das vorige Reich. Keiner der königlichen Nachkommen kann weiterregieren, das Königshaus geht unter, und andere reißen die Macht an sich.
5 Dann gewinnt der König des Südreichs[a] an Einfluss, doch einer seiner Heerführer wird noch bedeutender als er und errichtet im Norden ein noch größeres Reich.
6 Nach einigen Jahren verbünden sich die beiden Reiche miteinander, und um den Frieden zu festigen, heiratet die Tochter des Königs im Süden den König im Norden. Doch sie kann ihren Einfluss nicht behaupten, und das Bündnis zerbricht. Sie kommt um, ebenso ihr Mann, ihr Vater und ihr Gefolge. 7 Ein Verwandter von ihr[b] wird anstelle ihres Vaters König. Er zieht gegen den König des Nordens in den Krieg, besiegt seine Truppen und dringt in seine befestigte Hauptstadt ein. 8 Die Götterstatuen und die wertvollen Gegenstände aus Silber und Gold nimmt er nach Ägypten mit. Danach wird er den König im Norden einige Jahre nicht mehr angreifen. 9 Dieser jedoch fällt in das Südreich ein, zieht sich dann aber wieder zurück. 10 Seine Söhne werden sich erneut zum Krieg rüsten und viele große Heere aufbieten, die wie eine zerstörerische Flut[c] über die Feinde hereinbrechen. Immer wieder greifen sie an und dringen schließlich bis zur Festung des Königs im Süden vor. 11 Dieser wiederum wird voller Zorn seine Truppen sammeln, gegen seinen Feind kämpfen und ihn trotz seiner Übermacht besiegen. 12 Zehntausende aus dem nördlichen Reich werden dabei umkommen. Dieser Erfolg macht den König des Südens selbstsicher und überheblich. Doch er kann seine Macht nicht lange behaupten. 13 Denn der Herrscher aus dem Norden stellt einige Jahre später noch größere Truppen auf, bis an die Zähne bewaffnet, und greift mit ihnen an.
14 Auch viele andere werden sich in jener Zeit gegen den König des Südens auflehnen. Eine Vision erfüllt sich: Menschen aus deinem eigenen Volk, die vor Gewalttaten nicht zurückschrecken, schließen sich den Aufständischen an. Aber sie werden scheitern. 15 Der König aus dem Norden wird mit seinen Soldaten anrücken, eine befestigte Stadt belagern und sie einnehmen. Das Heer aus dem Süden kann ihm nicht standhalten, sogar die Elitetruppen müssen die Waffen strecken. 16 Niemand leistet dem nördlichen Herrscher mehr Widerstand, er kann tun und lassen, was er will.
Auch in Israel, dem herrlichen Land, macht er sich breit und hinterlässt dort eine Spur der Verwüstung. 17 Er will durch ein Bündnis die Herrschaft über das Südreich erlangen, damit es ihm nicht mehr gefährlich werden kann. Deshalb gibt er dem König des Südens eine seiner Töchter zur Frau. Doch sein Plan wird scheitern.
18 Darauf greift er die Küstenländer und Inseln an und bringt viele in seine Gewalt. Doch ein fremder Heerführer stellt sich ihm entgegen und macht seinem Größenwahn ein Ende. 19 Darauf zieht sich der König des Nordens in die befestigten Städte seines eigenen Landes zurück. Aber dort wird er gestürzt, und schon bald gerät er in Vergessenheit.
20 Sein Nachfolger wird einen Bevollmächtigten durchs Reich schicken, um Steuern einzutreiben und so den Reichtum seines Landes zu vergrößern. Aber schon nach kurzer Zeit wird der König ums Leben gebracht; er fällt jedoch weder im Krieg, noch wird er aus Rache ermordet.«
Der große Feind von Gottes Volk
21 »An die Stelle des verstorbenen Königs wird ein verachtenswerter Mann treten. Er ist zwar nicht für die Thronfolge bestimmt, setzt sich aber unerwartet durch und reißt die Herrschaft durch Intrigen an sich. 22 Feindliche Heere, die in sein Land einfallen, löscht er aus. Ja, sogar einen verbündeten Fürsten[d] lässt er umbringen. 23 Zuerst schließt er ein Bündnis mit ihm, doch dann hintergeht er ihn. Obwohl den König nur wenige unterstützen, gelangt er an den Gipfel der Macht. 24 Er fällt in die reichen Gegenden einer Provinz ein, während sich die Bewohner in Sicherheit wiegen, er plündert sie aus und verteilt die Beute an seine Anhänger. Kein Herrscher vor ihm hat es je so schlimm getrieben! Auch die befestigten Städte will er in seine Gewalt bekommen, doch all das dauert nur eine bestimmte Zeit.
25 Dann bietet er seine ganze Kraft und seinen ganzen Mut auf und führt ein großes Heer gegen den König des Südens in den Kampf. Dieser rüstet sich mit einer noch gewaltigeren Armee zum Krieg, doch er kann seinen Feinden nicht standhalten, denn er wird das Opfer einer Verschwörung: 26 Seine engsten Vertrauten bringen seine Pläne zum Scheitern, viele Soldaten fallen in der Schlacht, und die Überlebenden fliehen in alle Richtungen.
27 Darauf verhandeln die beiden Könige miteinander. Sie sitzen an einem Tisch, belügen sich gegenseitig und sind nur darauf aus, den anderen hinters Licht zu führen. Doch keiner von ihnen hat Erfolg, denn die Zeit für das Ende ist noch nicht gekommen. 28 Zunächst macht sich der König aus dem Norden mit reicher Beute auf den Heimweg. Unterwegs greift er das Volk an, mit dem Gott selbst einen heiligen Bund geschlossen hat. Nachdem er dort gewütet hat, kehrt er in sein eigenes Land zurück.
29 Nach einer bestimmten Zeit versucht er wieder, das Südreich zu erobern. Doch diesmal wird es ihm anders ergehen als bei seinem ersten Feldzug: 30 Schiffe aus einem Land im Mittelmeer bedrohen ihn, er verliert den Mut und tritt den Rückzug an.
Seine Wut darüber lässt er an Gottes Volk aus. Er zieht alle auf seine Seite, die bereit sind, den heiligen Bund mit Gott zu brechen. 31 Seine Truppen entweihen den Tempel und seine Festung, schaffen die täglichen Opfer ab und führen einen abscheulichen Götzendienst ein. 32 Alle, denen Gottes Bund mit Israel schon immer gleichgültig war, verführt er mit schönen Worten dazu, sich endgültig von Gott abzuwenden. Die anderen aber, die ihren Gott kennen und lieben, bleiben standhaft. 33 Weise und Verständige aus dem Volk werden vielen den richtigen Weg zeigen. Darum wird man sie eine Zeit lang mit Feuer und Schwert verfolgen, sie gefangen nehmen und ihren Besitz rauben. 34 In dieser Bedrängnis erfahren sie zwar auch ein wenig Hilfe, aber viele schließen sich ihnen nur zum Schein an. 35 Selbst von den Weisen und Verständigen kommen manche zu Fall, doch es dient ihrer Läuterung. Gott will sie durch diese schwere Zeit prüfen, damit ihr Glaube sich bis zum Ende bewährt. Doch noch ist das Ende nicht da.
36 Der König kann tun und lassen, was er will. Ja, er ist so vermessen, sich über die Götter zu erheben; sogar den höchsten Gott verhöhnt und verspottet er. Doch er wird nur so lange Erfolg damit haben, bis Gottes Zorn über sein Volk gestillt ist, denn niemand kann Gottes Pläne durchkreuzen. 37 Der König macht sich nichts aus den Göttern seiner Vorfahren. Nicht einmal der Lieblingsgott der Frauen[e] oder irgendein anderer bedeutet ihm etwas, denn er bildet sich ein, mächtiger als sie alle zu sein. 38 Er dient lieber dem Gott der Festungen, den seine Vorfahren nie gekannt haben, und bringt ihm Gold und Silber dar, Edelsteine und andere wertvolle Gaben. 39 Im Namen dieses fremden Gottes bezwingt er selbst die stärksten Festungen. Wer ihn als Herrscher anerkennt, den überhäuft er mit großen Ehren, er teilt ihm Land zu und lässt ihn über viele Menschen regieren.
40 Schließlich aber kommt das Ende: Der König des Südens fällt mit seinen Truppen über das Nordreich her, doch der König des Nordens geht mit Streitwagen, Reitern und vielen Schiffen zum Gegenangriff über. Er stößt in die Länder des Südens vor und überrollt sie wie eine verheerende Flut. 41 Dabei erobert er auch Israel, das herrliche Land, und Zehntausende werden fallen. Nur die Edomiter, die Moabiter und der größte Teil der Ammoniter kommen noch einmal davon. 42 Ein Land nach dem anderen bringt er in seine Gewalt, und auch für Ägypten gibt es bei diesem Feldzug keine Rettung mehr. 43 Der König des Nordens raubt die Schätze des Landes, sein Gold und sein Silber. Selbst Libyer und Äthiopier führt er in seinem Siegeszug mit. 44 Dann aber werden ihm Gerüchte aus dem Osten und Norden zugetragen, die ihn beunruhigen. Voller Zorn tritt er den Rückzug an, um seine Feinde ein für alle Mal zu vernichten. 45 Er schlägt seine Kriegszelte zwischen dem Meer und dem heiligen Berg Zion[f] auf. Doch dann wird sein Ende kommen, und niemand wird ihm mehr helfen.«

2 »”Pero ahora voy a darte a conocer la verdad. Van a levantarse en Persia tres reyes más y hasta un cuarto, el cual será más rico que los otros tres. En cuanto haya cobrado fuerza con sus riquezas, incitará a todos contra el reino griego. 3 Surgirá entonces un rey muy aguerrido, el cual gobernará con gran autoridad y hará lo que mejor le parezca. 4 Pero tan pronto como surja su imperio, se quebrará y se esparcirá hacia los cuatro vientos del cielo. Este imperio no será para sus descendientes, ni tendrá el poder que tuvo bajo su gobierno, porque Dios lo dividirá y se lo entregará a otros.
5 »”El rey del sur cobrará fuerza, pero uno de sus comandantes se hará más fuerte que él y gobernará su propio reino con gran poder. 6 Después de algunos años se convertirán en aliados. La hija del rey del sur irá al rey del norte para hacer una alianza. Pero perderá su poder y su linaje no sobrevivirá. En esos días será traicionada, junto con su escolta real, su padre y quien la apoyó.
7 »”Pero se levantará uno de su familia en su lugar. Él atacará las fuerzas del rey del norte y entrará a su fortaleza; luchará contra ellos y saldrá victorioso. 8 Se apoderará de las estatuas de metal de sus dioses, de sus objetos de oro y plata. Se los llevará a Egipto, dejando tranquilo al rey del norte durante algunos años. 9 Luego el rey del norte invadirá los dominios del rey del sur, pero se verá forzado a volver a su país. 10 Sus hijos se prepararán para la guerra, reunirán un gran ejército que, como una inundación, avanzará arrasándolo todo hasta llegar a la fortaleza.
11 »”Enfurecido, el rey del sur marchará en contra del rey del norte, que será derrotado a pesar de contar con un gran ejército. 12 Ante el triunfo obtenido, el rey del sur se llenará de orgullo y matará a miles; pero su victoria no durará 13 porque el rey del norte reunirá a otro ejército más numeroso y mejor armado que el anterior y, después de algunos años, volverá a atacar al rey del sur.
14 »”En esos tiempos muchos se levantarán contra el rey del sur, incluso gente violenta de tu pueblo, pero no saldrán victoriosos. Así se cumplirá la visión. 15 Entonces el rey del norte vendrá y levantará rampas de asalto y conquistará la ciudad fortificada, pues las fuerzas del sur no podrán resistir; ni siquiera sus mejores tropas podrán ofrecer resistencia. 16 El ejército invasor hará lo que quiera hacer, pues nadie podrá hacerle frente; se establecerá en la Hermosa Tierra y tendrá el poder para destruirla. 17 Él se dispondrá a atacar con todo el poder de su reino, pero hará una alianza con el rey del sur: este le dará su hija en matrimonio, con miras a derrocar su reino, pero sus planes no tendrán el éxito esperado. 18 Dirigirá entonces sus ataques contra las ciudades costeras y conquistará muchas de ellas, pero un general pondrá fin a su insolencia y lo hará quedar en ridículo. 19 Después de eso, el rey del norte regresará a la fortaleza de su país, pero sufrirá un tropiezo y no volverá a saberse nada de él.
20 »”Su sucesor enviará un recaudador de impuestos para mantener el esplendor del reino. Pero poco tiempo después ese rey perderá la vida, aunque no en el fragor de la batalla.
21 »”Le sucederá una persona despreciable, al que no se le ha concedido el honor de la realeza, que invadirá el reino cuando la gente se sienta más segura y usurpará el trono por medio de intrigas. 22 Arrasará como una inundación a las fuerzas que se le opongan; las derrotará por completo, lo mismo que al príncipe del pacto. 23 Engañará a los que pacten con él y con un grupo reducido usurpará el trono. 24 Cuando las provincias más ricas se sientan más seguras, las invadirá, logrando así lo que jamás lograron sus padres y abuelos. Repartirá entre sus seguidores el botín y las riquezas que haya ganado en la guerra, y hará planes para atacar las ciudades fortificadas. Pero esto no durará mucho tiempo.
25 »”Con un gran ejército, descargará su poder y ardor sobre el rey del Sur. Este enfrentará la guerra con un ejército muy grande y poderoso, pero no podrá resistir, porque será traicionado. 26 Los mismos que compartían su mesa buscarán su ruina; su ejército será derrotado por completo y muchos caerán en batalla. 27 Sentados a la misma mesa, estos dos reyes pensarán solo en hacerse daño y se mentirán el uno al otro; pero esto de nada servirá, porque el momento del fin todavía no habrá llegado. 28 El rey del norte regresará a su país con grandes riquezas, pero su corazón se opondrá al pacto santo; así que llevará a cabo sus planes y luego volverá a su país.
29 »”En el momento preciso, el rey del norte volverá a invadir el sur, aunque esta vez el resultado será diferente, 30 porque los barcos de guerra de las costas occidentales se opondrán a él y se desanimará. Entonces retrocederá y descargará su enojo contra el pacto santo. En su retirada, se mostrará bondadoso con los que renegaron de él.
31 »”Sus soldados se dedicarán a profanar la fortaleza del Templo, suspenderán el sacrificio diario y luego establecerán la abominación que causa destrucción. 32 Corromperá con halagos a los que hayan renegado del pacto, pero los que conozcan a su Dios se le opondrán con firmeza.
33 »”Los sabios instruirán a muchos, aunque durante algún tiempo morirán a filo de espada, o serán quemados, o se les tomará cautivos y se les despojará de todo. 34 Cuando caigan, recibirán muy poca ayuda, aunque mucha gente hipócrita se les unirá. 35 Algunos de los sabios caerán, pero esa prueba los purificará y perfeccionará para que, cuando llegue el tiempo del fin, no tengan mancha alguna. Todavía falta para que llegue el momento preciso.
El rey se exalta a sí mismo
36 »”El rey hará lo que mejor le parezca. Se exaltará a sí mismo, se creerá superior a todos los dioses, y dirá cosas contra el Dios de dioses que nadie antes se atrevió a decir. Su éxito durará mientras la ira de Dios no llegue a su colmo, aunque lo que ha de suceder sucederá. 37 Ese rey no respetará a los dioses de sus antepasados, ni al dios que adoran las mujeres, ni a ningún otro dios, sino que se exaltará a sí mismo por encima de todos ellos. 38 En su lugar, adorará al dios de las fortalezas; honrará a un dios que sus antepasados no conocieron, y le presentará costosas ofrendas de oro, plata y piedras preciosas. 39 Con la ayuda de un dios extraño atacará las fortalezas más poderosas. 40 »”Cuando llegue el tiempo del fin, el rey del sur trabará combate contra el rey del norte, pero este responderá a su ataque con carros y caballos, y con toda una flota de barcos de guerra. Invadirá muchos países y los arrasará como una inundación. 41 También invadirá la Hermosa Tierra, y muchos países caerán bajo su poder, aunque Edom y Moab y los jefes de Amón escaparán de sus manos. 42 Extenderá su poder sobre muchos países; ni Egipto podrá salvarse. 43 Se adueñará de los tesoros de oro y plata de Egipto, y de todas sus riquezas, y también someterá a los libios y a los cusitas.[a] 44 Sin embargo, le llegarán noticias alarmantes del este y del norte. 11 1 And in the first year of Darius(A) the Mede, I took my stand to support and protect him.)
The Kings of the South and the North
2 “Now then, I tell you the truth:(B) Three more kings will arise in Persia, and then a fourth, who will be far richer than all the others. When he has gained power by his wealth, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.(C) 3 Then a mighty king will arise, who will rule with great power and do as he pleases.(D) 4 After he has arisen, his empire will be broken up and parceled out toward the four winds of heaven.(E) It will not go to his descendants, nor will it have the power he exercised, because his empire will be uprooted(F) and given to others.
5 “The king of the South will become strong, but one of his commanders will become even stronger than he and will rule his own kingdom with great power. 6 After some years, they will become allies. The daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North to make an alliance, but she will not retain her power, and he and his power[a] will not last. In those days she will be betrayed, together with her royal escort and her father[b] and the one who supported her.
7 “One from her family line will arise to take her place. He will attack the forces of the king of the North(G) and enter his fortress; he will fight against them and be victorious. 8 He will also seize their gods,(H) their metal images and their valuable articles of silver and gold and carry them off to Egypt.(I) For some years he will leave the king of the North alone. 9 Then the king of the North will invade the realm of the king of the South but will retreat to his own country. 10 His sons will prepare for war and assemble a great army, which will sweep on like an irresistible flood(J) and carry the battle as far as his fortress.
11 “Then the king of the South will march out in a rage and fight against the king of the North, who will raise a large army, but it will be defeated.(K) 12 When the army is carried off, the king of the South will be filled with pride and will slaughter many thousands, yet he will not remain triumphant. 13 For the king of the North will muster another army, larger than the first; and after several years, he will advance with a huge army fully equipped.
14 “In those times many will rise against the king of the South. Those who are violent among your own people will rebel in fulfillment of the vision, but without success. 15 Then the king of the North will come and build up siege ramps(L) and will capture a fortified city. The forces of the South will be powerless to resist; even their best troops will not have the strength to stand. 16 The invader will do as he pleases;(M) no one will be able to stand against him.(N) He will establish himself in the Beautiful Land and will have the power to destroy it.(O) 17 He will determine to come with the might of his entire kingdom and will make an alliance with the king of the South. And he will give him a daughter in marriage in order to overthrow the kingdom, but his plans[c] will not succeed(P) or help him. 18 Then he will turn his attention to the coastlands(Q) and will take many of them, but a commander will put an end to his insolence and will turn his insolence back on him.(R) 19 After this, he will turn back toward the fortresses of his own country but will stumble and fall,(S) to be seen no more.(T)
20 “His successor will send out a tax collector to maintain the royal splendor.(U) In a few years, however, he will be destroyed, yet not in anger or in battle.
21 “He will be succeeded by a contemptible(V) person who has not been given the honor of royalty.(W) He will invade the kingdom when its people feel secure, and he will seize it through intrigue. 22 Then an overwhelming army will be swept away(X) before him; both it and a prince of the covenant will be destroyed.(Y) 23 After coming to an agreement with him, he will act deceitfully,(Z) and with only a few people he will rise to power. 24 When the richest provinces feel secure, he will invade them and will achieve what neither his fathers nor his forefathers did. He will distribute plunder, loot and wealth among his followers.(AA) He will plot the overthrow of fortresses—but only for a time.
25 “With a large army he will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will wage war with a large and very powerful army, but he will not be able to stand because of the plots devised against him. 26 Those who eat from the king’s provisions will try to destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall in battle. 27 The two kings, with their hearts bent on evil,(AB) will sit at the same table and lie(AC) to each other, but to no avail, because an end will still come at the appointed time.(AD) 28 The king of the North will return to his own country with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant. He will take action against it and then return to his own country.
29 “At the appointed time he will invade the South again, but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before. 30 Ships of the western coastlands(AE) will oppose him, and he will lose heart.(AF) Then he will turn back and vent his fury(AG) against the holy covenant. He will return and show favor to those who forsake the holy covenant.
31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice.(AH) Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation.(AI) 32 With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist(AJ) him.
33 “Those who are wise will instruct(AK) many, though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered.(AL) 34 When they fall, they will receive a little help, and many who are not sincere(AM) will join them. 35 Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined,(AN) purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.
The King Who Exalts Himself
36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself(AO) above every god and will say unheard-of things(AP) against the God of gods.(AQ) He will be successful until the time of wrath(AR) is completed, for what has been determined must take place.(AS) 37 He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. 38 Instead of them, he will honor a god of fortresses; a god unknown to his ancestors he will honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will distribute the land at a price.[d]
40 “At the time of the end the king of the South(AT) will engage him in battle, and the king of the North will storm(AU) out against him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood.(AV) 41 He will also invade the Beautiful Land.(AW) Many countries will fall, but Edom,(AX) Moab(AY) and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand. 42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt,(AZ) with the Libyans(BA) and Cushites[e] in submission. 44 But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. 45 He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at[f] the beautiful holy mountain.(BB) Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.
