11 »Y en el primer año de Darío el Medo(A), yo mismo me levanté[a] para serle fortalecedor y protector.

2 »Ahora te declararé la verdad: Se levantarán tres reyes más en[b] Persia(B), y un cuarto rey obtendrá muchas más riquezas que todos ellos. Cuando este se haya hecho fuerte con sus riquezas, provocará a todo el imperio contra[c] el reino de Grecia[d](C). 3 Se levantará entonces un rey poderoso(D) que gobernará con gran autoridad y hará lo que le plazca(E). 4 Pero cuando se haya levantado, su reino será fragmentado y repartido hacia los cuatro vientos del cielo(F), no a sus descendientes[e], ni según el poder que ejerció, pues su reino será arrancado(G) y dado a otros fuera de ellos.
5 »Entonces el rey del sur se hará poderoso, y uno de sus príncipes se hará más poderoso que él y dominará. Su dominio será un gran dominio(H). 6 Y años después, harán alianza, y la hija del rey del sur vendrá al rey del norte para hacer el pacto[f](I). Pero ella no retendrá su posición de poder[g], ni él permanecerá con su poder[h], sino que ella será entregada junto con los que la trajeron, con el que la engendró y con el que la sostenía en aquellos tiempos.
7 »Pero se levantará un vástago de sus raíces en su lugar, y vendrá contra el ejército y entrará en la fortaleza(J) del rey del norte, y luchará con[i] ellos y prevalecerá. 8 Aun sus dioses, sus imágenes fundidas y sus vasijas preciosas de plata y de oro los tomará y se los llevará a Egipto(K), y por algunos años él se mantendrá lejos del rey del norte. 9 Y este entrará en el reino del rey del sur, y luego se volverá a su tierra.
10 »Pero sus hijos se movilizarán[j] y reunirán una multitud de grandes ejércitos, y uno de ellos seguirá avanzando e inundará y pasará(L) adelante, para hacer guerra de nuevo[k] hasta la misma fortaleza. 11 El rey del sur se enfurecerá(M), y saldrá y peleará contra el rey[l] del norte. Y este levantará una gran multitud, pero esa multitud será entregada en manos de aquel[m]. 12 Cuando se haya llevado la multitud, su corazón se enaltecerá y hará caer a muchos millares, pero no prevalecerá. 13 El rey del norte volverá a levantar una multitud mayor que la primera, y después de algunos años[n](N) avanzará[o] con un gran ejército y con mucho equipo.
14 »En aquellos tiempos, muchos se levantarán contra el rey del sur. Los violentos de tu pueblo también se levantarán para cumplir la visión, pero caerán[p]. 15 Vendrá el rey del norte, levantará un terraplén y tomará una ciudad bien fortificada(O). Y las fuerzas del sur no podrán mantenerse, ni aun sus tropas más selectas[q], porque no habrá fuerzas para resistir. 16 Pero el que viene contra él hará lo que quiera(P), y nadie podrá resistirlo(Q). Y permanecerá por algún tiempo en la Tierra Hermosa[r], llevando[s] la destrucción en su mano(R).
17 »Y afirmará su rostro(S) para venir con el poder de todo su reino, trayendo[t] consigo oferta de paz[u], lo cual llevará a cabo. También le dará una hija de las mujeres para destruirlo, pero ella no le respaldará ni se pondrá a su lado[v]. 18 Entonces volverá su rostro hacia las costas y tomará muchas de ellas(T). Pero un príncipe pondrá fin a su afrenta. Además, hará recaer sobre él su afrenta(U). 19 Después volverá su rostro hacia las fortalezas de su tierra, pero tropezará(V) y caerá, y no se le hallará más(W).
20 »Y se levantará en su lugar otro que enviará un opresor[w] a través de la Joya[x] de su reino. Pero a los pocos días será destruido, aunque no en ira ni en batalla(X). 21 En su lugar se levantará un hombre despreciable, a quien no se le han otorgado los honores de la realeza. Vendrá cuando haya tranquilidad y se apoderará del reino con intrigas(Y). 22 Las fuerzas abrumadoras serán barridas[y] ante él y destruidas, así como también el príncipe del pacto(Z). 23 Y después que se haya hecho alianza con él, actuará con engaño, y subirá y ganará poder con poca gente.
24 »En un tiempo de tranquilidad entrará en los lugares más ricos de la provincia[z], y logrará lo que nunca lograron sus padres, ni los padres de sus padres. Repartirá entre ellos despojos, botín y riquezas, y contra las fortalezas planeará sus intrigas(AA), pero solo por un tiempo. 25 Va a usar su fuerza y su corazón contra el rey del sur con un gran ejército. Y el rey del sur movilizará para la guerra un ejército muy grande y muy poderoso(AB), pero no podrá resistir, porque planearán intrigas contra él. 26 Y los que comen de sus manjares lo destruirán[aa]. Su ejército será barrido(AC) y[ab] muchos caerán muertos.
27 »En cuanto a los dos reyes, en sus corazones tramarán el mal(AD), y en la misma mesa se hablarán mentiras(AE). Pero esto no tendrá éxito, porque el fin aún ha de venir en el tiempo señalado(AF). 28 Entonces volverá a su tierra con grandes riquezas, pero pondrá su corazón contra el pacto santo. Actuará contra este, y volverá a su tierra.
29 »En el tiempo señalado volverá y entrará en el sur, pero esta última vez no resultará como la primera[ac]. 30 Porque vendrán contra él naves de Quitim[ad](AG), y se desanimará. Volverá y se enfurecerá contra el pacto santo y actuará contra él; volverá, pues, y favorecerá a los que abandonen el pacto santo. 31 Y de su parte se levantarán tropas, profanarán el santuario fortaleza, pondrán fin al sacrificio(AH) perpetuo y establecerán la abominación de la desolación[ae](AI). 32 Con halagos(AJ) corromperá a los que obran inicuamente hacia el pacto, pero el pueblo que conoce a su Dios se mostrará fuerte y actuará(AK).
33 »Los entendidos entre el[af] pueblo instruirán a muchos(AL). Sin embargo, durante muchos días caerán a espada y a fuego, en cautiverio y despojo(AM). 34 Cuando caigan, recibirán poca ayuda, y muchos se unirán a ellos hipócritamente(AN). 35 También algunos de los entendidos[ag] caerán, a fin de ser refinados(AO), purificados(AP) y emblanquecidos(AQ) hasta el tiempo del fin. Porque aún está por venir el tiempo señalado(AR).
36 »El rey hará lo que le plazca, se enaltecerá y se engrandecerá(AS) sobre todo dios(AT), y contra el Dios de los dioses(AU) dirá cosas horrendas[ah](AV). Él prosperará hasta que se haya acabado la indignación(AW), porque lo que está decretado(AX) se cumplirá. 37 No le importarán los dioses[ai] de sus padres ni el favorito[aj] de las mujeres, tampoco le importará ningún otro dios, porque él se ensalzará sobre todos ellos.
38 »En su lugar honrará al dios de las fortalezas, un dios a quien sus padres no conocieron; lo honrará con oro y plata, piedras preciosas y cosas de gran valor. 39 Actuará contra la más fuerte de las fortalezas con la ayuda de un dios extranjero. A los que lo reconozcan[ak] colmará de honores, los hará gobernar sobre muchos y repartirá la tierra por un precio.
40 »Y al tiempo del fin(AY), el rey del sur se enfrentará con él(AZ), y el rey del norte lo atacará(BA) con carros, jinetes(BB) y con numerosas naves. Entrará en sus tierras, las invadirá[al] y pasará(BC). 41 También entrará a la Tierra Hermosa[am](BD), y muchos países caerán. Pero estos serán librados de su mano: Edom, Moab(BE) y lo más selecto de los amonitas(BF).
42 »Y extenderá su mano contra otros países, y la tierra de Egipto no escapará. 43 Se apoderará de[an] los tesoros ocultos de oro y plata y de todas las cosas preciosas de Egipto. Libios y etíopes(BG) seguirán sus pasos. 44 Pero rumores del oriente y del norte lo turbarán, y saldrá con gran furor para destruir y aniquilar[ao] a muchos. 45 Y plantará las tiendas de su pabellón entre los mares y el monte glorioso y santo(BH). Pero llegará a su fin y no habrá quien lo ayude.

The Message
11 “‘And I, in my turn, have been helping him out as best I can ever since the first year in the reign of Darius the Mede.’
The Kings of the South and the North
2 “‘But now let me tell you the truth of how things stand: Three more kings of Persia will show up, and then a fourth will become richer than all of them. When he senses that he is powerful enough as a result of his wealth, he will go to war against the entire kingdom of Greece.
3-4 “‘Then a powerful king will show up and take over a huge territory and run things just as he pleases. But at the height of his power, with everything seemingly under control, his kingdom will split into four parts, like the four points of the compass. But his heirs won’t get in on it. There will be no continuity with his kingship. Others will tear it to pieces and grab whatever they can get for themselves.
5-6 “‘Next the king of the south will grow strong, but one of his princes will grow stronger than he and rule an even larger territory. After a few years, the two of them will make a pact, and the daughter of the king of the south will marry the king of the north to cement the peace agreement. But her influence will weaken and her child will not survive. She and her servants, her child, and her husband will be betrayed.
6-9 “‘Sometime later a member of the royal family will show up and take over. He will take command of his army and invade the defenses of the king of the north and win a resounding victory. He will load up their tin gods and all the gold and silver trinkets that go with them and cart them off to Egypt. Eventually, the king of the north will recover and invade the country of the king of the south, but unsuccessfully. He will have to retreat.
10 “‘But then his sons will raise a huge army and rush down like a flood, a torrential attack, on the defenses of the south.
11-13 “‘Furious, the king of the south will come out and engage the king of the north and his huge army in battle and rout them. As the corpses are cleared from the field, the king, inflamed with bloodlust, will go on a bloodletting rampage, massacring tens of thousands. But his victory won’t last long, for the king of the north will put together another army bigger than the last one, and after a few years he’ll come back to do battle again with his immense army and endless supplies.
14 “‘In those times, many others will get into the act and go off to fight against the king of the south. Hotheads from your own people, drunk on dreams, will join them. But they’ll sputter out.
15-17 “‘When the king of the north arrives, he’ll build siege works and capture the outpost fortress city. The armies of the south will fall to pieces before him. Not even their famous commando shock troops will slow down the attacker. He’ll march in big as you please, as if he owned the place. He’ll take over that beautiful country, Palestine, and make himself at home in it. Then he’ll proceed to get everything, lock, stock, and barrel, in his control. He’ll cook up a peace treaty and even give his daughter in marriage to the king of the south in a plot to destroy him totally. But the plot will fizzle. It won’t succeed.
18-19 “‘Later, he’ll turn his attention to the coastal regions and capture a bunch of prisoners, but a general will step in and put a stop to his bullying ways. The bully will be bullied! He’ll go back home and tend to his own military affairs. But by then he’ll be washed up and soon will be heard of no more.
20 “‘He will be replaced shortly by a real loser, his rule, reputation, and authority already in shreds. And he won’t last long. He’ll slip out of history quietly, without even a fight.
21-24 “‘His place will be taken by a reject, a man spurned and passed over for advancement. He’ll surprise everyone, seemingly coming out of nowhere, and will seize the kingdom. He’ll come in like a steamroller, flattening the opposition. Even the Prince of the Covenant will be crushed. After negotiating a cease-fire, he’ll betray its terms. With a few henchmen, he’ll take total control. Arbitrarily and impulsively, he’ll invade the richest provinces. He’ll surpass all his ancestors, near and distant, in his rape of the country, grabbing and looting, living with his cronies in corrupt and lavish luxury.
24-26 “‘He will make plans against the fortress cities, but they’ll turn out to be shortsighted. He’ll get a great army together, all charged up to fight the king of the south. The king of the south in response will get his army—an even greater army—in place, ready to fight. But he won’t be able to sustain that intensity for long because of the treacherous intrigue in his own ranks, his court having been honeycombed with vicious plots. His army will be smashed, the battlefield filled with corpses.
27 “‘The two kings, each with evil designs on the other, will sit at the conference table and trade lies. Nothing will come of the treaty, which is nothing but a tissue of lies anyway. But that’s not the end of it. There’s more to this story.
28 “‘The king of the north will go home loaded down with plunder, but his mind will be set on destroying the holy covenant as he passes through the country on his way home.
29-32 “‘One year later he will mount a fresh invasion of the south. But the second invasion won’t compare to the first. When the Roman ships arrive, he will turn tail and go back home. But as he passes through the country, he will be filled with anger at the holy covenant. He will take up with all those who betray the holy covenant, favoring them. The bodyguards surrounding him will march in and desecrate the Sanctuary and citadel. They’ll throw out the daily worship and set up in its place the obscene sacrilege. The king of the north will play up to those who betray the holy covenant, corrupting them even further with his seductive talk, but those who stay courageously loyal to their God will take a strong stand.
33-35 “‘Those who keep their heads on straight will teach the crowds right from wrong by their example. They’ll be put to severe testing for a season: some killed, some burned, some exiled, some robbed. When the testing is intense, they’ll get some help, but not much. Many of the helpers will be halfhearted at best. The testing will refine, cleanse, and purify those who keep their heads on straight and stay true, for there is still more to come.
36-39 “‘Meanwhile, the king of the north will do whatever he pleases. He’ll puff himself up and posture himself as greater than any god. He will even dare to brag and boast in defiance of the God of gods. And he’ll get by with it for a while—until this time of wrathful judgment is completed, for what is decreed must be done. He will have no respect for the gods of his ancestors, not even that popular favorite among women, Adonis. Contemptuous of every god and goddess, the king of the north will puff himself up greater than all of them. He’ll even stoop to despising the God of the holy ones, and in the place where God is worshiped he will put on exhibit, with a lavish show of silver and gold and jewels, a new god that no one has ever heard of. Marching under the banner of a strange god, he will attack the key fortresses. He will promote everyone who falls into line behind this god, putting them in positions of power and paying them off with grants of land.
40-45 “‘In the final wrap-up of this story, the king of the south will confront him. But the king of the north will come at him like a tornado. Unleashing chariots and horses and an armada of ships, he’ll blow away anything in his path. As he enters the beautiful land, people will fall before him like dominoes. Only Edom, Moab, and a few Ammonites will escape. As he reaches out, grabbing country after country, not even Egypt will be exempt. He will confiscate the treasuries of Egyptian gold and silver and other valuables. The Libyans and Ethiopians will fall in with him. Then disturbing reports will come in from the north and east that will throw him into a panic. Towering in rage, he’ll rush to stamp out the threat. But he’ll no sooner have pitched camp between the Mediterranean Sea and the Holy Mountain—all those royal tents!—than he’ll meet his end. And not a soul around who can help!’”

2 Men nu ska jag förklara sanningen för dig. Ytterligare tre kungar kommer att uppstå i Persien och efterträdas av en fjärde, mycket rikare än de andra. Styrkt av sin rikedom kommer han att mobilisera alla mot Grekland. 3 Då uppstår en mäktig kung som regerar med stor makt och gör som han vill. 4 Men så snart han har framträtt, faller hans rike samman och delas i de fyra väderstrecken. Det kommer inte att ges till hans efterkommande och inte heller vara lika mäktigt som när han hade makten. Hans rike utplånas och ges åt andra.
5 Kungen i söder blir mäktig, men en av hans furstar blir ännu mäktigare än han och regerar över hans rike med stor makt. 6 Några år senare allierar de sig med varandra. Dottern till kungen i södern kommer till kungen i norr för en allians, men hon förlorar sitt inflytande, och inte heller får han och hans makt bestå. Hon blir då utlämnad, tillsammans med sitt följe och sin far och sina anhängare.
7 Men en ättling ur hennes släktled kommer att uppstå i stället. Han går till anfall mot nordkungens armé och tränger sig in i hans fästning, strider mot dem och besegrar dem. 8 Han kommer också att föra med sig deras gudar och gjutna bilder och värdefulla föremål av guld och silver till Egypten. Under några år kommer han att låta nordkungen vara i fred. 9 Nordkungen kommer att invadera sydkungens rike men återvända sedan tillbaka till sitt eget land. 10 Hans söner gör då krigsförberedelser och samlar en enorm armé, drar fram som en stormflod och för fram striden ända till sydkungens fästning.
11 Då drar sydkungen i förbittring ut och strider mot nordkungen, som uppbådar en stor armé men blir överlämnad åt den förre. 12 När armén är borta, fylls sydkungen av stolthet och slår ner tusentals, men hans triumf blir inte långvarig. 13 Kungen i norr samlar en ännu större armé än den förra, och efter några år rycker han fram med en stor armé och utrustning.
14 Vid samma tid kommer många att resa sig mot sydkungen. Våldsmän bland ditt eget folk reser sig för att fullfölja synen, men de kommer att falla. 15 Kungen i norr kommer och bygger en belägringsvall och intar en befäst stad. Armén i söder kan inte hålla stånd, inte ens deras bästa trupper kan det. 16 Invaderaren gör som han vill, utan att någon kan göra motstånd. Han etablerar sig i det härliga landet och lägger det under sig. 17 Han bestämmer sig för att komma med hela sitt rikes makt, med avsikt att alliera sig med sydkungen. Han ger honom en dotter till hustru, för att ruinera riket. Men det lyckas inte, det hjälper inte. 18 Sedan vänder han sig mot kustländerna och intar flera av dem. Men en befälhavare stoppar hans hån och vänder det mot honom själv. 19 Han vänder sedan tillbaka till sitt eget lands fästningar igen men vacklar och faller och finns inte mer.
20 Hans efterträdare sänder en skatteindrivare genom landet som är hans rikes prydnad. Men efter en kort tid krossas han, dock varken genom vrede eller krig.
21 Den som efterträder honom är en usel man som saknar kungavärdighet. Han invaderar riket i tysthet och tar makten genom intriger. 22 Armén som väller fram kommer att svepas undan inför honom, och till och med förbundsfursten krossas. 23 Den som har allierat sig med honom agerar han svekfullt mot, och han kommer till makten med bara ett fåtal människor. 24 När de rikaste provinserna lever i trygghet invaderar han dem och gör något som varken hans fäder eller förfäder gjort. Han delar ut byte och rov och gods bland sina anhängare och smider under en tid onda planer mot befästningar.
25 Han samlar sin kraft och sitt mod med en stor armé mot sydkungen. Denne mobiliserar också en väldig armé för krig men kan inte hålla stånd på grund av en sammansvärjning mot honom. 26 De som äter vid hans bord vill krossa honom. Hans armé kommer att svepas bort och många att stupa i striden. 27 Dessa två kungar har ont i sinnet, sitter vid samma bord och ljuger för varandra, dock utan någon framgång, för slutet kommer vid den bestämda tiden. 28 Nordkungen återvänder hem till sitt land med stora rikedomar, men med ont i sinnet agerar han mot det heliga förbundet och återvänder sedan till sitt land.
29 Vid den bestämda tiden invaderar han än en gång sydlandet, men nu blir utgången en annan än förra gången. 30 Fartyg från Kittim[a] kommer emot honom, och han blir modlös. Han vänder tillbaka och riktar vreden mot det heliga förbundet. Han återvänder alltså och ställer sig välvillig gentemot dem som övergett det heliga förbundet.
31 Hans beväpnade styrkor kommer och vanhelgar tempelborgen, avskaffar det dagliga offret och sätter upp den vanhelgande vidrigheten. 32 Han lockar med smicker dem till avfall som har våldfört sig på förbundet. Men de som känner sin Gud står fasta och håller ut.
33 De insiktsfulla ska undervisa många men ändå under en tid falla för svärd och eld, bli fängslade och utsatta för plundring. 34 När de faller får de en viss hjälp, och många hycklare sluter sig till dem. 35 En del av de insiktsfulla kommer att falla, för att de ska förädlas, renas och luttras intill den sista tiden. För den bestämda tiden är ännu inte inne.
36 Kungen kommer att göra som han vill, upphöja sig själv, sätta sig själv över varje gud och tala oerhörda ting mot gudars Gud. Han lyckas fram tills att vredens tid är ute, för det som är bestämt måste ske. 37 Han visar ingen aktning för sina förfäders gudar och inte heller för den gud som kvinnor älskar eller någon annan gud, utan upphöjer sig själv över dem allesammans. 38 I stället ärar han fästningarnas gud, en gud som hans förfäder inte kände till, med guld och silver, ädelstenar och dyrbara gåvor. 39 Han agerar mot de starkaste fästningar med en främmande guds hjälp och ger dem stor ära som bekänner sig till honom. Han gör dem till härskare över många och delar ut land som belöning.
40 Men vid tidens slut drabbar sydkungen samman med honom, och kungen från norr stormar fram mot honom med vagnar och ryttare och en stor flotta. Han invaderar flera länder och sveper fram som en stormflod. 41 Han invaderar det härliga landet, och många länder faller. Men Moab, Edom och större delen av ammoniterna räddar sig undan honom. 42 Han utökar sin makt över många länder, och inte heller Egypten slipper undan. 43 Han lägger beslag på skatter av guld och silver och Egyptens alla dyrbarheter. Libyer och kushiter underkastar sig honom.
44 Men rykten från öster och norr skrämmer honom, och i ursinne drar han ut för att förgöra och förinta många. 45 Han slår upp sina kungliga tält mellan havet och helgedomens härliga berg. Men han kommer att gå under, och ingen kan hjälpa honom.
