Daniel 11

11 Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.
2 And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.
3 And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.
4 And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
5 And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.
6 And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.
7 But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail:
8 And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.
9 So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.
10 But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.
11 And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.
12 And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.
13 For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.
14 And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.
15 So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.
16 But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.
17 He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.
18 After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him.
19 Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.
20 Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.
21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.
22 And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.
23 And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.
24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.
25 And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.
26 Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.
27 And both of these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.
28 Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.
29 At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.
30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.
31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
33 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.
34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.
35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.
36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.
42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.
44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.
45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

11 “다리우스가 메대의 왕이 된 첫 해에[a] 나는 페르시아의 왕자[b]에게 맞서 싸우는 미가엘을 돕기 위해 나섰다.
2 지금부터 말하는 것은 진실이다. 앞으로 세 사람의 새 왕들이 페르시아를 다스릴 것이다. 그 뒤 네 번째 왕이 올 것이다. 네 번째 왕은 그보다 앞서 페르시아를 다스린 왕들보다 훨씬 많은 재물을 모아 부자가 될 것이다. 네 번째 왕은 재물을 모아 부자가 되고 힘이 강해져 권세를 손에 쥐면, 그는 모든 사람들의 마음을 움직여 그리스를 칠 것이다. 3 그러나 그리스에는 용감한 왕이 일어나 큰 권력을 쥐고 다스리며 무슨 일이든 자기 마음대로 할 것이다. 4 그러나 그의 권세가 다해 끝나 갈 즈음에는 그의 나라가 무너져 네 나라로 갈라져 나뉠 것이다. 그의 왕국은 그의 자손이 물려받지도 못하고, 그의 자손은 그가 누리던 권세도 누리지 못할 것이다. 그의 왕국은 뿌리 채 뽑혀서 다른 사람들에게 넘겨질 것이기 때문이다.
5 남쪽 왕의 권능이 커질 것이다. 그러나 그의 장군 가운데 하나가 남쪽 왕보다 강해져서 더 큰 나라를 어우러 다스리기 시작할 것이며 그의 권세는 매우 클 것이다.
6 그 뒤 몇 해가 지나면 남쪽 왕과 장군은 나라와 나라 사이의 친교를 맺을 것이다. 남쪽 왕의 딸이 북쪽 왕과 결혼을 해 두 나라가 가깝게 지낼 것이다. 그러나 남쪽 왕의 딸은 아무런 권세도 누리지 못하고, 왕자를 낳아도 세자가 되지 못할 것이다. 왕비와 왕비가 낳은 아이와 시종들은 사람들에게 버림을 받을 것이다.
7 그러나 그 여자의 뿌리에서 난 사람 하나가 남쪽 왕의 자리를 이어받을 것이다. 그가 북쪽 왕의 군대를 공격할 것이며 북쪽 왕의 강한 요새로 쳐들어 가 싸워 이길 것이다. 8 그는 그들의 금속으로 만든 우상들과 금과 은으로 만든 값진 물건들을 빼앗아 이집트로 가져갈 것이다. 그 뒤 몇 해 동안 그는 북쪽 왕을 괴롭히지 않고 그대로 둘 것이다. 9 그러면 북쪽 왕이 남쪽 왕을 공격하겠지만 결국 져서 다시 자기 나라로 돌아갈 것이다.
10 북쪽 왕의 아들들이 전쟁을 준비하고 많은 병사들을 모을 것이다. 병사들은 힘찬 홍수처럼 힘차게 쳐들어가 남쪽 왕의 강한 요새까지 나아갈 것이다. 11 그러면 남쪽 왕이 크게 노하여 북쪽 왕에 맞서 싸우려고 나아갈 것이다. 북쪽 왕은 큰 군대를 거느리지만 싸움에서는 질 것이다. 12 남쪽 왕은 북쪽의 군대를 물리쳐 수 만 명을 죽여 이기고 자신만만해 하겠지만, 그의 권세가 그대로 지켜지지는 못할 것이다. 13 북쪽 왕은 돌아가서 처음보다 더 큰 군대를 일으킬 것이며, 몇 해가 지난 다음에 큰 군대와 많은 무기를 이끌고 쳐내려갈 것이다.
14 그 때에는 많은 사람들이 남쪽 왕에게 맞설 것이다. 너의 백성들 가운데서도 싸움을 좋아하는 사람들이 남쪽 왕에 맞서, 환상에서 본 것을 실현시켜 보려고 하겠지만 실패하고 말 것이다. 15 그 뒤 북쪽 왕이 와서 흙 언덕을 쌓고 요새가 된 도시를 함락할 것이다. 남쪽 군대는 맞서 싸울 힘이 없을 것이다. 남쪽 군대의 정예부대도 북쪽 군대를 당해낼 만큼 강하지는 못할 것이다.
16 북쪽 왕은 그가 원하는 대로 무엇이든 할 것이다. 아무도 그를 막지 못할 것이다. 그는 아름다운 땅에 우뚝 서 그 땅의 것을 닥치는 대로 그의 손아귀에 넣을 것이다. 17 북쪽 왕은 자기의 모든 힘을 가지고 남쪽 왕과 맞서 싸우려고 할 것이다. 그는 남쪽 왕과 친교를 맺고 자기 딸 하나를 남쪽 왕에게 시집보내 남쪽 왕을 멸망시키려 할 것이다. 그러나 그 일이 계획대로 이루어지지는 않을 것이다.
18 그 뒤 북쪽 왕은 바닷가에 있는 나라들에 관심을 돌려 그곳의 많은 도시들을 차지할 것이다. 그러나 한 장군이 나타나 북쪽 왕이 더는 제멋대로 날뛰지 못하게 그를 꺾어버릴 것이다.
19 그 뒤에 북쪽 왕은 자기 나라의 요새로 돌아갈 것이다. 그러나 그는 약해져서 쓰러져 사라지고 말 것이다.
20 그 왕의 뒤를 이어 다른 왕이 자리에 오를 것이다. 그 왕은 백성들에게 세금 징수관을 보내 많은 돈을 거두어 제 나라를 부유하게 만들 것이다. 그러나 몇 해가 안 가서 그는, 누군가 원한을 품은 사람이나 전쟁에 의해서 끝장나는 것이 아니라, 아무도 모르게 살해되고 말 것이다.
21 그의 뒤를 이어 아주 경멸을 받아 마땅한 사람이 왕이 될 것이다. 그에게는 왕의 가문에서 나온 사람이라는 영예가 없을 것이다[c]. 그는 은밀하게 술책을 써서 사람들이 안심하고 있을 때에 쳐들어와 나라를 차지할 것이다. 22 그는 그에게 맞서는 군대들을 쳐부술 것이다. 그는 계약의 통치자[d]까지도 죽일 것이다. 23 많은 나라가 그 잔인하고 미움 받는 왕과 동맹을 맺을 것이나, 그는 그 나라들을 거짓으로 속여 차지하고 점점 힘을 늘려 세력을 잡고 올라설 것이다. 그러나 그의 편이 되어주는 사람은 적을 것이다.
24 그는 부자 나라들이 안심하고 있을 때 그 나라들을 쳐들어 갈 것이다. 그리고 그의 조상들 가운데 아무도 하지 않은 짓을 할 것이다. 그는 그를 따르는 사람들에게 싸움에서 빼앗은 물건들을 나누어 주며, 한 때나마 다른 나라들을 무너뜨릴 계획을 세울 것이다. 그는 계획대로 이루겠지만 얼마 가지는 못할 것이다.
25 그는 용기를 내어 아주 많은 병사들을 거느리고 남쪽 왕을 공격할 것이다. 남쪽 왕도 아주 크고 힘센 군대를 거느리고 싸움에 나설 것이다. 그러나 남쪽 왕을 반대하는 사람들이 그를 무너뜨릴 계획을 짤 것이고, 남쪽 왕은 싸움에서 질 것이다. 26 남쪽 왕의 편이었던 사람들이 그를 무너뜨리려고 할 것이다. 그의 군대는 싸움에서 지게 될 것이다. 그의 밑에 있는 많은 병사들이 싸움에서 죽게 될 것이다. 27 그때 두 왕은 한 식탁에 앉아 먹으면서도 마음속으로는 악한 계획만 꾸밀 것이다. 그러나 하나님께서 정해 놓으신 때가 되지 않아 그들의 속셈대로는 되지 않을 것이다.
28 북쪽 왕은 많은 재산을 가지고 자기 나라로 돌아갈 것이다. 자기 나라로 가는 길에 그는 거룩한 계약을 무너뜨리고 나쁜 일을 하기로 마음먹을 것이다. 그는 자기가 계획한 것들을 할 것이고 그 뒤 자기 나라로 돌아갈 것이다.
29 북쪽 왕은 알맞은 때를 골라 남쪽 왕을 공격할 것이다. 그러나 이번에는 전처럼 성공하지 못할 것이다. 30 서쪽에서 배들이 와서 북쪽 왕과 맞서 싸울 것이다. 북쪽 왕은 그 배들이 오는 것을 보고 두려워 할 것이다. 그는 돌아가서 거룩한 계약을 맺은 사람들에게 화풀이를 할 것이다. 그는 돌아가서 거룩한 계약을 따르지 않기로 한 사람들을 높은 자리에 앉힐 것이다. 31 북쪽 왕은 자기 병사들을 보내서 성전의 요새지역에서 하나님을 모독하는 일들을 하도록 시킬 것이다. 병사들은 사람들이 날마다 바치는 제물을 없애고 아주 끔찍한 일을 할 것이다. 그들은 파괴를 불러오는 흉측한 우상을 그곳에 세울 것이다.
32 북쪽 왕은 거룩한 계약을 따르지 않는 사람들을 거짓말과 듣기 좋은 말로 꾈 것이다. 그들은 더 악한 죄를 지을 것이다. 그러나 하나님을 알고 따르는 사람들은 흔들림이 없이 맞서 싸울 것이다.
33 지혜로운 선생들이 사람들을 도와서 그들에게 일어나는 일들을 제대로 알도록 깨우쳐 줄 것이다. 그러나 그런 지혜로운 사람들도 얼마동안은 칼에 쓰러지고, 불에 타서 죽고, 포로로 잡힐 것이다. 또 어떤 사람은 집과 가진 것들을 빼앗길 것이다. 34 지혜로운 사람들에 대한 박해가 계속되는 동안 그들은 도움을 조금밖에 받지 못할 것이다. 많은 사람들이 그들과 함께하겠지만 거짓된 마음으로 그렇게 할 것이다. 35 지혜로운 사람들 가운데 어떤 이들은 죽임을 당할 것이다. 이 일을 통해 다른 사람들이 단련을 받아, 마지막 때가 이를 때까지 더 강해지고 깨끗해지고 흠이 없는 사람들이 될 것이기 때문이다. 그 뒤 때가 되면 마지막 때가 찾아올 것이다.
자기를 높이는 왕
36 북쪽 왕은 자기가 원하는 것은 무엇이든 할 것이다. 그는 자기를 끝없이 높일 것이다. 그는 자신을 칭찬하고 자기가 신들의 신이신 하나님보다 더 높다고 생각할 것이다. 그는 하나님께 끔찍한 말을 해댈 것이다. 그는 마지막 때가 올 때까지 그렇게 멋대로 하다가 마침내 하나님의 진노를 받아 망할 것이다. 하나님께서 계획하신 일은 반드시 이루어지기 때문이다.
37 북쪽 왕은 자기의 조상들이 섬겼던 신들과 여자들이 섬긴 신들도 모른다 하며, 어떤 신에 대해서도 관심이 없을 것이다. 대신 그는 자기 자신을 찬양하고 자기를 그 어떤 신보다도 위대하다고 내세울 것이다. 38 북쪽 왕은 신을 섬기지 않고 군사력을 섬길 것이다. 군사력과 힘이 그의 신이 될 것이다. 그의 조상들은 그가 한 것처럼 군사력을 사랑하지 않았다. 그는 군사력의 신에게 금과 은과 값진 보석을 바치며 그를 높이 섬길 것이다.
39 북쪽 왕은 그 외국 신의 도움을 받아 튼튼한 요새들을 공격할 것이다. 그는 자기편이 되는 이방의 지도자들에게 많은 영예를 주고 많은 백성을 거느리게 할 것이다. 그는 그 지도자들에게 보상으로 땅을 나누어 줄 것이다.
40 마지막 때에 남쪽 왕이 북쪽 왕에게 싸움을 걸어 올 것이다. 북쪽 왕은 전차[e]와 말 탄 병사들과 많은 배를 몰고 가서 공격할 것이다. 북쪽 왕은 홍수와 같이 땅 위를 휩쓸고 지나갈 것이다. 41 북쪽 왕은 아름다운 땅으로 쳐들어 갈 것이다. 많은 나라들이 북쪽 왕에게 질 것이다. 그러나 에돔과 모압과 암몬의 지도자들은 그의 손을 피할 것이다. 42 북쪽 왕은 많은 나라들에게 자기의 군사력을 보여줄 터인데, 이집트까지도 그의 군대를 이겨내지 못할 것이다. 43 그는 이집트의 금과 은과 모든 재물들을 마음대로 빼앗고 리비아와 에티오피아도 손아귀에 넣을 것이다. 44 그러나 북쪽 왕은 동쪽과 북쪽에서 들려오는 소식을 듣고 두렵고 화가 나, 많은 나라들을 파괴하고 사람들을 죽일 것이다. 45 그는 바다와 아름답고 거룩한 산 사이에 왕의 장막을 세울 것이다. 그러나 결국 이 악한 왕은 죽을 것이다. 최후를 맞이하는 그를 도와줄 사람이 아무도 없을 것이다.”
