1 En el año tercero del reinado de Joacim rey de Judá, vino Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia a Jerusalén, y la cercó.
2 Y el Señor entregó en sus manos a Joacim rey de Judá, y parte de los vasos de la Casa de Dios, y los trajo a tierra de Sinar, a la casa de su dios; y metió los vasos en la casa del tesoro de su dios.
3 Y dijo el rey a Aspenaz, príncipe de sus eunucos, que trajera de los hijos de Israel, del linaje real de los príncipes,
4 muchachos en quienes no hubiera tacha alguna, y de buen parecer, y enseñados en toda sabiduría, y sabios en ciencia, y de buen entendimiento, y que tuvieran fuerzas para estar en el palacio del rey; y que les enseñara las letras y la lengua de los caldeos.
5 Y les señaló el rey ración para cada día de la ración de la comida del rey, y del vino de su beber; y que los criara tres años, para que al fin de ellos estuvieran delante del rey.
6 Y fueron entre ellos, de los hijos de Judá, Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías,
7 a los cuales el príncipe de los eunucos puso nombres; y puso a Daniel, Beltasar y a Ananías, Sadrac; y a Misael, Mesac; y a Azarías, Abed-nego.
8 Y Daniel propuso en su corazón no contaminarse en la ración de la comida del rey ni en el vino de su beber; pidió por tanto al príncipe de los eunucos licencia de no contaminarse.
9 (Y puso Dios a Daniel en gracia y en misericordia con el príncipe de los eunucos.)
10 Y dijo el príncipe de los eunucos a Daniel: Tengo temor de mi señor el rey, que señaló vuestra comida y vuestra bebida; pues luego que él vea vuestros rostros más tristes que los de los muchachos que son semejantes a vosotros, condenaréis mi cabeza para con el rey.
11 Entonces dijo Daniel a Melsar, que estaba puesto por príncipe de los eunucos sobre Daniel, Ananías, Misael, y Azarías:
12 Prueba, ahora, con tus esclavos diez días, y dennos de las legumbres a comer, y agua a beber.
13 Parezcan luego delante de ti nuestros rostros, y los rostros de los muchachos que comen de la ración de la comida del rey; y según que vieres, harás con tus esclavos.
14 Consintió, pues, con ellos en esto, y probó con ellos diez días.
15 Y al cabo de los diez días pareció el rostro de ellos mejor y más gordo de carne, que los otros muchachos que comían de la ración de la comida del rey.
16 Así, fue que Melsar tomaba la ración de la comida de ellos, y el vino de su beber, y les daba legumbres.
17 Y a estos cuatro muchachos les dio Dios conocimiento e inteligencia en todas las letras y ciencia; mas Daniel tuvo entendimiento en toda visión y sueños.
18 Pasados, pues, los días al fin de los cuales había dicho el rey que los trajeran, el príncipe de los eunucos los trajo delante de Nabucodonosor.
19 Y el rey habló con ellos, y no fue hallado entre todos ellos otro como Daniel, Ananías, Misael, y Azarías; y así, estuvieron delante del rey.
20 Y en todo negocio de sabiduría e inteligencia que el rey les demandó, los halló diez veces mejores que todos los magos y astrólogos que había en todo su reino.
21 Y continuó Daniel hasta el año primero del rey Ciro.

Daniel’s Training in Babylon
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim(A) king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon(C) came to Jerusalem and besieged it.(D) 2 And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried(E) off to the temple of his god in Babylonia[a] and put in the treasure house of his god.(F)
3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility(G)— 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome,(H) showing aptitude for every kind of learning,(I) well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language(J) and literature of the Babylonians.[b] 5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine(K) from the king’s table.(L) They were to be trained for three years,(M) and after that they were to enter the king’s service.(N)
6 Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel,(O) Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(P) 7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar;(Q) to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.(R)
8 But Daniel resolved not to defile(S) himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favor(T) and compassion(U) to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your[c] food and drink.(V) Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”
11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test(W) your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”(X) 14 So he agreed to this and tested(Y) them for ten days.
15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.(Z) 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.(AA)
17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding(AB) of all kinds of literature and learning.(AC) And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.(AD)
18 At the end of the time(AE) set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service.(AF) 20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians(AG) and enchanters in his whole kingdom.(AH)
21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.(AI)
