Ang Salita ng Dios (Tagalog Contemporary Bible)

Si Daniel at ang Kanyang mga Kaibigan sa Babilonia

1 Nang ikatlong taon ng paghahari ni Jehoyakim sa Juda, sinalakay ni Haring Nebucadnezar ng Babilonia at ng kanyang mga kawal ang Jerusalem. 2 Binihag niya si Haring Jehoyakim ayon sa kalooban ng Panginoon. Kinuha niya ang ilang mga kagamitan sa templo ng Dios at dinala sa Babilonia.[a] Inilagay niya ang mga ito sa taguan ng kayamanan doon sa templo ng kanyang dios.

3 Nag-utos si Haring Nebucadnezar kay Ashpenaz na pinuno ng mga tauhan niya na pumili sa mga bihag na Israelita ng ilang kabataang mula sa angkan ng mga hari at angkan ng mararangal na pamilya. 4 Kinakailangan na ang mga ito ay gwapo, malusog, matalino, mabilis kumilos at madaling turuan para maging karapat-dapat maglingkod sa hari. Inutusan din niya si Ashpenaz na turuan sila ng wika at mga panitikan ng mga taga-Babilonia.[b] 5 Iniutos din ng hari na mula sa kanyang sariling pagkain at inumin ang ibibigay sa kanila araw-araw. At pagkatapos ng tatlong taong pagsasanay, maglilingkod na sila sa kanya.

6 Kabilang sa mga napili ay sina Daniel, Hanania, Mishael, at Azaria na pawang mula sa lahi ni Juda. 7 Pinalitan ni Ashpenaz ang kanilang mga pangalan. Si Daniel ay pinangalanang Belteshazar, si Hanania ay Shadrac, si Mishael ay Meshac, at si Azaria ay Abednego.

8 Pero ipinasya ni Daniel na hindi siya kakain ng pagkain ng hari o iinom ng kanyang inumin para hindi siya marumihan.[c] Kaya nakiusap siya kay Ashpenaz na huwag siyang bigyan ng pagkain at inuming iyon. 9 Niloob naman ng Dios na siyaʼy kalugdan ni Ashpenaz. 10 Pero sinabi ni Ashpenaz kay Daniel, “Natatakot ako sa hari. Siya ang pumili kung ano ang kakainin at iinumin ninyo, at kung makita niyang hindi kayo malusog gaya ng ibang mga kabataan, baka ipapatay niya ako.”

11 Dahil dito, sinabi ni Daniel sa itinalaga ni Ashpenaz na mangangalaga sa kanila, 12 “Subukan nʼyo kaming pakainin lang ng gulay at painumin ng tubig sa loob ng sampung araw. 13 Pagkatapos, ihambing ninyo kami sa mga kabataang kumakain ng pagkain ng hari, at tingnan ninyo kung ano ang magiging resulta. At bahala na kayo kung ano ang gagawin ninyo sa amin.” 14 Pumayag naman ito at sinubukan nga sila sa loob ng sampung araw.

15 Pagkatapos ng sampung araw, nakita ng tagapagbantay na mas malusog sila kaysa sa mga kabataang kumakain ng pagkain ng hari. 16 Kaya ipinagpatuloy na lang ang pagbibigay sa kanila ng gulay at tubig sa halip na pagkain at inumin ng hari.

17 Binigyan ng Dios ang apat na kabataang ito ng karunungan at pang-unawa, pati na ang kaalaman sa ibaʼt ibang literatura. Bukod pa rito, binigyan ng Dios si Daniel ng karunungan sa pagpapaliwanag ng kahulugan ng mga pangitain at mga panaginip.

18 Pagkalipas ng tatlong taon na pagtuturo sa kanila ayon sa utos ni Haring Nebucadnezar, dinala sila ni Ashpenaz sa kanya. 19 Nakipag-usap ang hari sa kanila, at napansin ng hari na wala ni isa man sa mga kabataan doon ang makahihigit kina Daniel, Hanania, Mishael, at Azaria. Kaya sila ang piniling maglingkod sa kanya. 20 Sa lahat ng itinanong ng hari sa kanila, nakita niya na ang kanilang kaalaman ay sampung ulit na mas mahusay kaysa sa kaalaman ng mga salamangkero at engkantador[d] sa buong kaharian niya. 21 Patuloy na naglingkod si Daniel kay Nebucadnezar hanggang sa unang taon ng paghahari ni Cyrus.[e]

Daniel’s Training in Babylon

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim(A) king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon(C) came to Jerusalem and besieged it.(D) 2 And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried(E) off to the temple of his god in Babylonia[a] and put in the treasure house of his god.(F)

3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility(G)— 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome,(H) showing aptitude for every kind of learning,(I) well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language(J) and literature of the Babylonians.[b] 5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine(K) from the king’s table.(L) They were to be trained for three years,(M) and after that they were to enter the king’s service.(N)

6 Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel,(O) Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(P) 7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar;(Q) to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.(R)

8 But Daniel resolved not to defile(S) himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favor(T) and compassion(U) to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your[c] food and drink.(V) Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”

11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test(W) your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”(X) 14 So he agreed to this and tested(Y) them for ten days.

15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.(Z) 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.(AA)

17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding(AB) of all kinds of literature and learning.(AC) And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.(AD)

18 At the end of the time(AE) set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service.(AF) 20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians(AG) and enchanters in his whole kingdom.(AH)

21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.(AI)

Daniel’s Development in the King’s Court

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim the king of Judah into his hand and some of[a] of the utensils of the temple of God,[b] and he brought them to the land of Shinar to the temple of his gods, and he brought the utensils to the treasury[c] of his gods.

3 And the king ordered[d] Ashpenaz, the commander of his court officials, to bring some of the Israelites[e] from the royal family[f] and from the lords,[g] 4 youths who have no physical defect,[h] and who are handsome,[i] and who are prudent[j] in all wisdom and endowed with knowledge,[k] and who understand insight, and who have the ability[l] in them to serve in the palace of the king. And the king ordered him to teach them the literature and the language of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king assigned to them his daily portion[m] from the fine food of the king, and from the wine that he drank,[n] and instructed that they were to be educated for three years.[o] And at the end of their training, they were to be stationed[p] before[q] the king. 6 Now there was among them from the Judeans,[r] Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 7 And the commander of the court officials gave them names, and he called Daniel, Belteshazzar; and Hananiah, Shadrach; and Mishael, Meshach; and Azariah, Abednego.

Daniel’s Resolve

8 Now Daniel resolved[s] that he would not defile himself with the fine food of the king, and with the wine that he drank,[t] and so he requested from the commander of the court officials permission so that he would not defile himself. 9 And God[u] gave Daniel favor and compassion before[v] the commander of the court officials, 10 and the commander of the court officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord, the king, who has determined your food and your drink, for why should[w] he see your face having a worse appearance than the young men who are your age?[x] Then you will endanger my head with the king.” 11 Then[y] Daniel asked the guard[z] whom the commander of the court officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us some of the vegetables,[aa] and let us eat and let us drink water. 13 Then[ab] let our appearances and the appearance of the young men who are eating the fine food of the king be compared before you,[ac] and then deal with your servants according to what you see.”[ad] 14 So he agreed to this proposal with them, and he tested them for ten days. 15 And at the end of ten days their appearances appeared better and they were healthier of body than all the young men who were eating the fine food of the king. 16 So[ae] the guard continued to withhold[af] their fine food and the wine of their drink, and he gave them[ag] vegetables.

17 And as for these four young men,[ah] God[ai] gave to them knowledge and insight into all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had insight into all visions[aj] and dreams. 18 And at the end of the time the king had set to bring them, the commander of the court officials brought them in before[ak] Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them no one was found like[al] Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; then they stood before[am] the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired from them, he found them ten times better than all of the magicians[an] and conjurers[ao] that were in his entire kingdom.[ap] 21 And Daniel was there until the first year of Cyrus the king.
