Gabriel’s Announcement and Presentation of the Seventy Sets of Seven

20 Now I was still speaking and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before[a] Yahweh my God, on behalf of the holy mountain of my God.[b] 21 And I was still speaking in prayer, and the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision previously,[c] in my weariness touched me[d] at the time of the evening offering. 22 And he instructed me and he spoke with me and he said, “Daniel I have now come out[e] to teach you understanding. 23 At the beginning of your pleas for mercy, a word went out, and now I have come to declare[f] it, for you are highly esteemed, and so consider the word and understand the vision.

The Seventy Sets of Seven Detailed

24 “Seventy weeks is decreed for your people and for your holy city,[g] to put an end to the transgression and to seal up sin[h] and to make atonement for guilt and to bring in everlasting righteousness and to seal vision and prophet and to anoint the most holy place.[i] 25 And you must know and you must understand[j] that from the time of the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem until an anointed[k] onea leader—will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;[l] it will be restored and will be built with streets and a moat, but in a time of oppression.[m]

26 “And after the sixty and two weeks an anointed one[n] shall be cut off, and he shall have nothing,[o] and the people of the coming leader will destroy the city and the sanctuary,[p] and its end will be with the flood and on to the end there shall be war; these desolations are determined. 27 And he will make a strong covenant with the many for one week, but in half of the week he will let cease sacrifice and offering and in its place[q] a desolating abomination comes even until the determined complete destruction[r] is poured out on the desolator.”

The Seventy Weeks of Years

20 While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel,(A) and presenting my petition before the Lord my God concerning the holy mountain of my God— 21 while I was praying, Gabriel,(B) the man I had seen in the first vision,(C) reached me in my extreme weariness, about the time of the evening offering.(D) 22 He gave me this explanation: “Daniel, I’ve come now to give you understanding.(E) 23 At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God.[a](F) So consider the message and understand the vision:(G)

24 Seventy weeks are decreed(H)
about your people and your holy city—
to bring the rebellion to an end,
to put a stop to sin,
to atone for iniquity,
to bring in everlasting righteousness,(I)
to seal up vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the most holy place.
25 Know and understand this:
From the issuing of the decree
to restore and rebuild Jerusalem(J)
until an Anointed One,(K) the ruler,[b]
will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.
It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat,
but in difficult times.
26 After those sixty-two weeks
the Anointed One will be cut off(L)
and will have nothing.
The people of the coming ruler
will destroy the city(M) and the sanctuary.[c]
The[d] end will come with a flood,(N)
and until the end there will be[e] war;
desolations are decreed.
27 He will make a firm covenant[f]
with many for one week,
but in the middle of the week
he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering.
And the abomination of desolation(O)
will be on a wing(P) of the temple[g][h]
until the decreed destruction(Q)
is poured out on the desolator.”

The Seventy “Sevens”

20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing(A) my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill(B) 21 while I was still in prayer, Gabriel,(C) the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.(D) 22 He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding.(E) 23 As soon as you began to pray,(F) a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed.(G) Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:(H)

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’[a] are decreed for your people and your holy city(I) to finish[b] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone(J) for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness,(K) to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[c]

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild(L) Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[d](M) the ruler,(N) comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.(O) 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death(P) and will have nothing.[e] The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood:(Q) War will continue until the end, and desolations(R) have been decreed.(S) 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’[f] In the middle of the ‘seven’[g] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[h] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed(T) is poured out on him.[i][j]
