The Son of Man Is Given Dominion

13 “I saw in the night visions,

and (A)behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the (B)Ancient of Days
    and was presented before him.
14 (C)And to him was given dominion
    and glory and a kingdom,
that all (D)peoples, nations, and languages
    should serve him;
(E)his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
    which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
    that shall not be destroyed.

13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,[a](A) coming(B) with the clouds of heaven.(C) He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority,(D) glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him.(E) His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom(F) is one that will never be destroyed.(G)

  1. Daniel 7:13 The Aramaic phrase bar enash means human being. The phrase son of man is retained here because of its use in the New Testament as a title of Jesus, probably based largely on this verse.

Jesus Is Equal with God

18 This was why the Jews (A)were seeking all the more to kill him, (B)because not only was he (C)breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God (D)his own Father, (E)making himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (F)the Son (G)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[a] does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For (H)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And (I)greater works than these will he show him, so that (J)you may marvel. 21 For as the Father (K)raises the dead and (L)gives them life, so (M)also the Son gives life (N)to whom he will. 22 (O)For the Father judges no one, but (P)has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they (Q)honor the Father. (R)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (S)whoever hears my word and (T)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He (U)does not come into judgment, but (V)has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (W)an hour is coming, and is now here, when (X)the dead will hear (Y)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear (Z)will live. 26 (AA)For as the Father has life in himself, (AB)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he (AC)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for (AD)an hour is coming when (AE)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, (AF)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

30 (AG)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and (AH)my judgment is just, because (AI)I seek not my own will (AJ)but the will of him who sent me.

  1. John 5:19 Greek he

18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(A) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(B)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(C) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(D) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(E) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(F) even so the Son gives life(G) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(H) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(I)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(J) has eternal life(K) and will not be judged(L) but has crossed over from death to life.(M) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(N) when the dead will hear(O) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(P) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(Q) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(R) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(S) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(T) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(U) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(V)
