5 ベルシャツァル王は、千人の高位高官を招いて大宴会を催し、ふんだんにぶどう酒をふるまいました。 2-4 王はぶどう酒を飲みながら、ずっと以前、ネブカデネザル王の治世にエルサレムの神殿からバビロンに持って来た、金と銀の杯のことを思い出しました。そこで、この聖なる杯を宴席に持って来るよう命じました。杯が運ばれて来ると、王と王子たち、妻とそばめたちは、金や銀、青銅や鉄、木や石で作られた偶像のために、その杯で乾杯したのです。
5 すると突然、居並ぶ者たちの目の前に人の手の指が現れ、燭台の向こうの塗り壁に何かを書いたのです。王も確かにその指を見ました。 6 恐ろしさのあまり、王の顔は蒼白となりひざはがくがくと震えだし、その場に座り込んでしまいました。 7 王は叫びました。「呪文師、占星学者を呼べ。カルデヤ人を呼べ。だれでも、壁に書かれた文字を読み、その意味を解き明かすなら、王室の栄誉を帯びた紫の衣を着せ、首に金の鎖をかけ、この国の第三の支配者としよう！」 8 しかし、呼び集められた者のうち、一人としてその文字を読み、意味を解き明かせる者はいません。 9 王はますます興奮し、恐怖におびえています。居並ぶ高官たちも、うろたえるばかりです。
10 このことを聞いた王母は、すぐ宴会場に駆けつけ、王に言いました。「王よ、落ち着いてください。そんな顔をしたり、おびえたりするのはおやめください。 11 あなたの王国には、聖なる神の霊が宿っている人がいるではありませんか。あなたの父上、ネブカデネザル王の時代に、その人は、まるで神のように知恵と理解力に満ちていました。それで父上の治世に、バビロン全土の呪文師、占星学者、カルデヤ人、占い師の長とされたのです。 12 その人はダニエルという者です。父上はベルテシャツァルと呼んでおられました。その人を召してください。その頭脳は神の知恵と理解力に満ちています。それで、夢を解き明かし、なぞを解き、どんな難問も解決できるのです。あの壁に書かれた文字の意味も教えてくれましょう。」
13 ダニエルは、すぐさま王のもとに召されました。王はダニエルに尋ねました。「ネブカデネザル王がイスラエルから捕虜として連れて来たダニエルというのは、おまえか。 14 おまえのうちには神の霊が宿り、知恵と理解力にすぐれていると聞いている。 15 私の知者や占星学者たちは、あの壁に書かれた文字を読み、その意味を解き明かそうとしたが、できなかった。 16 おまえは、どんななぞも解くことができるそうだな。この文字を解き明かしてくれるなら、紫の衣を着せ、首に金の鎖をかけ、おまえをこの国で第三の支配者としよう。」
17 「ありがたい仰せですが、その褒美は、ご自分のために取っておかれるか、ほかの者に与えてください。とにかく、壁の文字の意味はお教えします。 18 王よ。いと高き神は、先王ネブカデネザルに、偉大な王国と、それにふさわしい威厳と光栄とを与えました。 19 その威厳はたいへんなもので、世界の国々はみな、王の前に震えおののいたものです。先王は気に入らない者は殺し、気に入る者は生かすというふうに、気の向くままに人を用いたり、捨てたりなさいました。 20 こうして、先王の心がおごり高ぶった時、神は先王を位から退け、栄光を奪ったのです。 21 先王は宮殿から野に追われ、心も感情も動物と同じようになり、野ろばと共に住み、牛のように草を食べ、体は天の露にぬれました。そして先王もついに、いと高き方が人間の国々を支配し、御心にかなう者に国々を支配させることを悟ったのです。 22 その後継者であるあなたは、そのことをみな知っていながら、へりくだることをなさいませんでした。 23 それどころか、天の主に逆らい、主の神殿の杯をここに持って来させました。王も、高官たちも、王妃やそばめたちも、その杯でぶどう酒を飲み、金、銀、青銅、鉄、木、石でできた、見ることも聞くことも、悟ることもできない神々をほめたたえました。こうして、王にいのちの息を与え、王の人生を手中に握っている神をほめたたえなかったのです。 24-25 それで神は手の指を送り、この文字を書かせたのです。その文字は、『メネ』『メネ』『テケル』『パルシン』と読みます。 26 意味はこうです。『メネ』は、数えられたという意味で、神が王の治世の日数を数えて、その日がもう尽きたということです。 27 『テケル』は、はかりで量られたという意味で、王が神のはかりで量られ、審査に落ちたということです。 28 『パルシン』は、分割されたという意味で、王の国が分割されて、メディヤとペルシヤに与えられるということです。」
29 それから、ベルシャツァル王の命令で、ダニエルは紫の衣を着せられ、首に金の鎖をかけられ、王国で第三の支配者であると宣言されたのです。
30 その夜のうちに、カルデヤ人の王ベルシャツァルは殺され、 31 メディヤ人ダリヨスが都に入り、その国を支配するようになりました。時に、ダリヨスは六十二歳でした。

The Writing on the Wall
5 King Belshazzar(A) gave a great banquet(B) for a thousand of his nobles(C) and drank wine with them. 2 While Belshazzar was drinking(D) his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets(E) that Nebuchadnezzar his father[a] had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines(F) might drink from them.(G) 3 So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4 As they drank the wine, they praised the gods(H) of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.(I)
5 Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. 6 His face turned pale(J) and he was so frightened(K) that his legs became weak(L) and his knees were knocking.(M)
7 The king summoned the enchanters,(N) astrologers[b](O) and diviners.(P) Then he said to these wise(Q) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,(R) and he will be made the third(S) highest ruler in the kingdom.”(T)
8 Then all the king’s wise men(U) came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.(V) 9 So King Belshazzar became even more terrified(W) and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.
10 The queen,[c] hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall. “May the king live forever!”(X) she said. “Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale! 11 There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods(Y) in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom(Z) like that of the gods.(AA) Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners.(AB) 12 He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar,(AC) was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles(AD) and solve difficult problems.(AE) Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.(AF)”
13 So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?(AG) 14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods(AH) is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.(AI) 15 The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it.(AJ) 16 Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems.(AK) If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck,(AL) and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”(AM)
17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.(AN) Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.
18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar(AO) sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor.(AP) 19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death;(AQ) those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled.(AR) 20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride,(AS) he was deposed from his royal throne(AT) and stripped(AU) of his glory.(AV) 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign(AW) over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.(AX)
22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son,[d] have not humbled(AY) yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(AZ) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives(BA) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(BB) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(BC) and all your ways.(BD) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.
25 “This is the inscription that was written:
mene, mene, tekel, parsin
26 “Here is what these words mean:
Mene[e]: God has numbered the days(BE) of your reign and brought it to an end.(BF)
27 Tekel[f]: You have been weighed on the scales(BG) and found wanting.(BH)
28 Peres[g]: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes(BI) and Persians.”(BJ)
29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck,(BK) and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.(BL)
30 That very night Belshazzar,(BM) king(BN) of the Babylonians,[h] was slain,(BO) 31 and Darius(BP) the Mede(BQ) took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.[i]

ダニエル、ライオンの穴に投げ込まれる
6 ダリヨス王は国を百二十の州に分け、それぞれに知事を置きました。 2 州知事の上に三人の大臣を置き、ダニエルはその一人でした。この三人への報告を義務づけることで、王は効果的に王国を治めることができました。 3 ダニエルにはすぐれた能力があり、他の大臣や州知事よりも有能であることが、だれの目にも明らかになりました。そこで王は、彼を行政長官にして全国を治めさせようと考えました。 4 そのため、他の大臣や州知事は激しく嫉妬し、ダニエルの行政に落度はないかと探り、王に訴える口実を見つけようとしました。しかし、何一つ批判できる点を見つけることができません。ダニエルは誠実で、正直にふるまい、間違いを犯すことがありませんでした。 5 そこで、「残された道はただ一つ、ダニエルの宗教に関することだ」ということになったのです。 6 彼らは王のもとへ行き、次のように進言しました。「ダリヨス王よ。いつまでもご健勝であられますように。 7 私ども大臣、州知事、参議官ならびに総督は、どんな事情があっても取り消すことのできない法令を制定していただくよう、全会一致で決議いたしました。その法令とは、向こう三十日間、王以外のどんな神にも人にも祈りをささげる者があれば、ライオンの餌食にされる、というものでございます。 8 この法令に署名をお願いいたします。そうすれば、これは無効にすることも変更することもできない『メディヤとペルシヤの法律』となるのでございます。」 9 そこで王は、この法律に署名しました。
10 ところが、ダニエルはそのことを知りましたが、家に帰るといつものように、二階の寝室でひざまずきました。エルサレムの方角の窓を開けて、彼は一日に三度、神に祈り、感謝をささげていたのです。 11 陰謀を企てた者たちがダニエルの家に押しかけてみると、神に哀願し、祈っているダニエルの姿を見つけました。 12 彼らは王のもとに急ぎ、あの法律について念を押しました。「王は、向こう三十日間、王以外のどんな神にも人にも祈りをささげてはならないという法律に署名なさいました。その法律に背く者は、ライオンの餌食にされるのでしたね。」「そのとおりだ。変更も取り消しもできない『メディヤとペルシヤの法律』だ。」 13 そこで彼らは王に訴えました。「あのユダヤ人捕虜の一人、ダニエルは、王も王の法律も無視して、日に三度、彼の神に祈りをささげているのです。」 14 これを聞いて、王は法律に署名したことを悔やみ、何とかしてダニエルを助けようとしました。そして日が暮れるまで、ダニエルを救い出す手だてはないものかと思い巡らしていました。 15 夕方になると、陰謀を企てた者たちがまた来て、こう言います。「王様。もう、どうしようもありません。王が署名された法律ですから、変更の余地はございません。」
16 とうとう王は、ダニエルを逮捕するよう命じました。ダニエルは捕らえられ、ライオンの穴に投げ込まれたのです。王はダニエルに呼びかけました。「おまえがいつも礼拝している神が、どうか、おまえを救ってくださるように。」 17 それから一つの石が運んで来られ、穴の口に置かれました。だれもダニエルをライオンの穴から救い出せないようにと、王と政府の公印をもって封じたのです。 18 王は宮殿に帰ると、食事もせずに寝室に入りました。いつもの余興も受けつけず、一睡もしないで夜を明かしました。
19-20 翌日、まだ夜の明けないうちに、王はライオンの穴に駆けつけ、悲痛な声で叫びました。「ダニエル！ 生ける神のしもべよ！ おまえがいつも礼拝している神は、おまえをライオンから救ってくださったか。」 21 すると、ダニエルの声がするではありませんか。「王様。永遠に生き長らえられますように。 22 私の神が御使いを送り、ライオンの口をふさいでくださったので、ライオンは何もできませんでした。それは、神の前で、私に罪のないことが認められたからです。また、王に対しても、何も悪いことをしていないからです。」 23 王は我を忘れて喜び、ダニエルを穴から引き上げるよう命じました。ダニエルは神に信頼していたので、体にはかすり傷一つ負いませんでした。 24 王は、ダニエルを訴えた者たちを妻子ともども捕らえ、ライオンの穴に投げ込みました。すると、彼らが穴の底に落ちないうちにライオンが飛びかかり、引き裂いてしまいました。
25-26 そののち、ダリヨス王は国中の全国民に、次のような声明文を書き送りました。
「すべての民に告ぐ。私の国のどこでも、ダニエルの神の前に、震えおののくようにせよ。
彼の神こそ、変わることのない生ける神であり、
その国は滅びることがなく、
その力は尽きることがない。
27 この神はご自分の民を救い出し、
危険から守られる。
天と地において、驚くべき奇跡を行われる。
ライオンからダニエルを救い出してくださったのは、
実に、この神だ。」
28 こうしてダニエルは、ダリヨス王の治世とペルシヤ人クロス王の治世に栄えました。

Daniel in the Den of Lions
6 [a]It pleased Darius(A) to appoint 120 satraps(B) to rule throughout the kingdom, 2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel.(C) The satraps were made accountable(D) to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.(E) 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges(F) against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”(G)
6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever!(H) 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors(I) have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.(J) 8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(K) 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.
10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward(L) Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees(M) and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.(N) 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.(O) 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(P)
13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,(Q) pays no attention(R) to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed;(S) he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.
15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”(T)
16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den.(U) The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue(V) you!”
17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed(W) it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating(X) and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.(Y)
19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”(Z)
21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever!(AA) 22 My God sent his angel,(AB) and he shut the mouths of the lions.(AC) They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.(AD) Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound(AE) was found on him, because he had trusted(AF) in his God.
24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den,(AG) along with their wives and children.(AH) And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.(AI)
25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language(AJ) in all the earth:
“May you prosper greatly!(AK)
26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence(AL) the God of Daniel.(AM)
“For he is the living God(AN)
and he endures forever;(AO)
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.(AP)
27 He rescues and he saves;(AQ)
he performs signs and wonders(AR)
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions.”(AS)
28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus[b](AT) the Persian.(AU)

3-4 主がいつまでも私たちの罪を
心に留められるとしたら、
この祈りも聞いてはいただけないでしょう。
しかし、恐れ多いことですが、
あなたは赦してくださるお方です。
5 だからこそ私は、助けを信じ、
期待をこめて待っているのです。
6 見張りの者が夜明けを待つよりも切実に、
主を待ち望んでいます。
7 イスラエルよ、主を信じて希望を持ちなさい。
主は恵み深く親切で、
両手いっぱいの祝福をかかえて来てくださるからです。
8 主は、罪の奴隷となったイスラエルを
買い戻してくださいます。

バプテスマのヨハネ、活動を始める
3 1-2 ローマ皇帝テベリオの治世の十五年目に、神は、荒野に住むザカリヤの子ヨハネにお語りになりました。〔当時、ポンテオ・ピラトがローマから遣わされた全ユダヤの総督で、ヘロデはガリラヤ、その兄弟ピリポがイツリヤとテラコニテ、ルサニヤがアビレネを治めていました。大祭司はアンナスとカヤパでした。〕
3 ヨハネはヨルダン川周辺をくまなく歩き、罪が赦されるために、今までの生活を悔い改めて、神に立ち返ったことを表明するバプテスマ（洗礼）を受けるようにと、教えを説き始めました。
4 預言者イザヤの書にあるとおりです。
「荒野から叫ぶ声が聞こえる。
『主の道を準備せよ。
主が通られる道をまっすぐにせよ。
5 山はけずられ、
谷は埋められ、
曲がった所はまっすぐにされ、
でこぼこ道は平らにされる。
6 こうして、すべての人が
神から遣わされた救い主を見るのだ。』」（イザヤ40・3-5）
7 バプテスマを受けに来る人たちに、ヨハネはきびしい口調で話しました。「まむしの子ら！ あなたがたは神に立ち返ろうともせず、ただ地獄から逃れたい一心でバプテスマを受けようとしている。 8 その前に、悔い改めたことを行いで示しなさい。アブラハムの子孫だから大丈夫などと思ってはいけない。そんなものは何の役にも立たない。神はこの石ころからでも、今すぐアブラハムの子孫をお造りになれるのだ。 9 今の今でも、神のさばきの斧はふりかぶられ、あなたがたを根もとから切り倒そうと待ちかまえている。だから、良い実を結ばない木はすぐにも切り倒され、火に投げ込まれるのだ。」
10 「では、いったいどうすればいいのですか。」 11 こう尋ねる群衆に、ヨハネは答えました。「下着を二枚持っていたら、一枚は貧しい人に与えなさい。余分な食べ物があるなら、お腹をすかせている人に与えなさい。」
12 取税人たち（ローマに納める税金をあくどいやり方で取り立て、人々からきらわれていた）までもが、バプテスマを受けようとやって来ました。そして、恐る恐る、「私たちはどうしたらよいのでしょう」と尋ねました。 13 「正直になりなさい。ローマ政府が決めた以上の税金を取り立ててはいけない。」 14 兵士たちも尋ねました。「私たちはどうすればいいのですか。」「脅しや暴力で金をゆすったり、何も悪いことをしない人を訴えたりしてはいけない。与えられる給料で満足しなさい。」
15 民衆は、救い主を待望していました。そして、もしかしたらヨハネがキリストではないかと考えたのです。 16 この疑問を、ヨハネはきっぱり否定しました。「私は水でバプテスマを授けているだけだ。しかし、もうすぐ私よりはるかに権威ある方が来られる。その方のしもべとなる価値さえ、私にはない。その方は、聖霊と火でバプテスマをお授けになる。 17 また、麦ともみがらとをふるい分け、麦は倉に納め、もみがらを永久に消えない火で焼き尽くされる。」 18 ヨハネはほかにも多くのことを教え、民衆に福音を伝えました。

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)
10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(P) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)
