⁴ I prayed to the Lord my God and ^(A)made confession, saying, ^(B)“O Lord, the ^(C)great and awesome God, who ^(D)keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments,

²⁸ And we know that for those who love God all things work together ^(A)for good,^[a] for ^(B)those who are called according to his purpose.

⁶ but showing steadfast love to thousands^[a] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

^5 (A)we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly ^(B)and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. ^6 (C)We have not listened to ^(D)your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to ^(E)our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. ⁷ To you, ^(F)O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, ^(G)those who are near and ^(H)those who are far away, in ^(I)all the lands to which you have driven them, because of ^(J)the treachery that they have committed against you. ⁸ To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because ^(K)we have sinned against you. ^9 (L)To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him ^10 (M)and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by ^(N)his servants the prophets. ^11 (O)All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, ^(P)refusing to obey your voice. ^(Q)And the curse and oath ^(R)that are written in the Law of ^(S)Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because ^(T)we have sinned against him. ¹² He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against ^(U)our rulers who ruled us,^[a] by ^(V)bringing upon us a great calamity. ^(W)For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem.

¹⁷ ‘Ah, Lord God! It is ^(A)you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by ^(B)your outstretched arm! ^(C)Nothing is too hard for you. ^18 (D)You show steadfast love to thousands, ^(E)but you repay the guilt of fathers ^(F)to their children after them, O great and ^(G)mighty God, whose name is the ^(H)Lord of hosts, ^19 (I)great in counsel and ^(J)mighty in deed, ^(K)whose eyes are open to all the ways of the children of man, ^(L)rewarding each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.

⁶ The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ^(A)“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and ^(B)gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast ^(C)love and faithfulness, ^7 (D)keeping steadfast love for thousands,^{[a] (E)}forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but ^(F)who will by no means clear the guilty, ^(G)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

¹⁴ if my people who are called by my name ^(A)humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

³² “Now, therefore, our God, ^(A)the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love, let not all the hardship seem little to you that has come upon us, upon our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets, our fathers, and all your people, ^(B)since the time of the kings of Assyria until this day.
