23 Near the end of their kingdoms,
when the rebels have reached
the full measure of their sin,[a]
an insolent king, skilled in intrigue,[b]
will come to the throne.
24 His power will be great,
but it will not be his own.
He will cause terrible destruction(A)
and succeed in whatever he does.
He will destroy the powerful
along with the holy people.(B)
25 He will cause deceit to prosper
through his cunning and by his influence,
and in his own mind he will make himself great.
He will destroy many in a time of peace;
he will even stand against the Prince of princes.
Yet he will be shattered—not by human hands.(C)
26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings
that has been told is true.
Now you must seal up the vision(D)
because it refers to many days in the future.”

The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan’s working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders,(A) 10 and with every unrighteous deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth in order to be saved.(B) 11 For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe what is false, 12 so that all will be condemned(C)—those who did not believe(D) the truth but enjoyed unrighteousness.

One of his heads appeared to be fatally wounded,[a] but his fatal wound was healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast.[b](A) They worshiped the dragon(B) because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast?(C) Who is able to wage war against him?”

A mouth was given to him to speak boasts and blasphemies.(D) He was also given authority to act[c][d] for 42 months.(E) He began to speak[e] blasphemies against God: to blaspheme His name and His dwelling—those who dwell in heaven. And he was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them. He was also given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation.(F) All those who live on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name was not written from the foundation of the world in the book[f] of life(G) of the Lamb who was slaughtered.[g](H)

If anyone has an ear, he should listen:(I)

10 If anyone is destined for captivity,
into captivity he goes.
If anyone is to be killed[h] with a sword,
with a sword he will be killed.(J)

This demands the perseverance[i] and faith of the saints.(K)

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; he had two horns like a lamb,[j](L) but he sounded like a dragon. 12 He exercises all the authority of the first beast on his behalf and compels the earth and those who live on it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. 13 He also performs great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in front of people. 14 He deceives those who live on the earth(M) because of the signs that he is permitted to perform on behalf of the beast,(N) telling those who live on the earth to make an image[k] of the beast who had the sword wound and yet lived. 15 He was permitted to give a spirit[l] to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could both speak and cause whoever would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 And he requires everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a mark[m] on his right hand or on his forehead,(O) 17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark: the beast’s name or the number of his name.

Then I heard another voice from heaven:

Come out of her, My people,
so that you will not share in her sins(A)
or receive any of her plagues.
For her sins are piled up[a] to heaven,(B)
and God has remembered her crimes.
Pay her back the way she also paid,(C)
and double it according to her works.(D)
In the cup in which she mixed,(E)
mix a double portion for her.
As much as she glorified herself and lived luxuriously,
give her that much torment and grief,
for she says in her heart,
“I sit as a queen;
I am not a widow,
and I will never see grief.”(F)
For this reason her plagues will come in one day[b]
death and grief and famine.
She will be burned up with fire,
because the Lord God who judges her is mighty.
