³ And four great beasts ^(A)came up out of the sea, different from one another.

The First Beast

13 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, ^(A)with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and ^(B)blasphemous names on its heads.

^17 (A)‘These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth.

⁴ The first was like a lion and had eagles' wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. ⁵ And behold, ^(A)another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ ⁶ After this I looked, and behold, another, like a ^(B)leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and ^(C)dominion was given to it. ⁷ After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, ^(D)terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; ^(E)it devoured and broke in pieces ^(F)and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and ^(G)it had ten horns. ⁸ I considered the horns, and behold, ^(H)there came up among them another horn, a little one, ^(I)before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and ^(J)a mouth speaking great things.

A Vision of Four Chariots

6 Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, four chariots came out from between two mountains. And the mountains were mountains of ^(A)bronze. ² The first chariot had ^(B)red horses, the second ^(C)black horses, ³ the third ^(D)white horses, and the fourth chariot dappled horses—all of them strong.^{[a] 4} Then I answered and said to ^(E)the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?” ⁵ And the angel answered and said to me, ^(F)“These are going out to the four winds of heaven, after ^(G)presenting themselves before ^(H)the Lord of all the earth. ⁶ The chariot with the black horses goes toward ^(I)the north country, the white ones go after them, and the dappled ones go toward ^(J)the south country.” ⁷ When the strong horses came out, they were impatient to go and ^(K)patrol the earth. And he said, “Go, ^(L)patrol the earth.” ^(M)So they patrolled the earth. ⁸ Then he cried to me, “Behold, those who go toward ^(N)the north country have set my Spirit at rest in ^(O)the north country.”

³⁷ You, O king, ^(A)the king of kings, to whom ^(B)the God of heaven ^(C)has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, ³⁸ and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, ^(D)the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all—you are ^(E)the head of gold. ^39 (F)Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you, and yet a third kingdom ^(G)of bronze, ^(H)which shall rule over all the earth. ⁴⁰ And ^(I)there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron ^(J)breaks to pieces and shatters all things. And like iron that crushes, it shall ^(K)break and crush all these.
