⁶ But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor.^(A) So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”

⁷ The king summoned the enchanters,^(A) astrologers^[a](B) and diviners.^(C) Then he said to these wise^(D) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,^(E) and he will be made the third^(F) highest ruler in the kingdom.”^(G)

⁴⁸ Then the king placed Daniel in a high^(A) position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.^(B)

²⁹ Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck,^(A) and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.^(B)

¹⁶ Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems.^(A) If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck,^(B) and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”^(C)

¹⁷ Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.^(D) Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.

¹¹ Now leave at once and go home!^(A) I said I would reward you handsomely,^(B) but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.”

³⁷ Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?”

⁷ The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination.^(A) When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.
