²⁶ The king declared to Daniel, ^(A)whose name was Belteshazzar, ^(B)“Are you able to make known to me the dream that I have seen and its interpretation?”

⁷ And ^(A)the chief of the eunuchs ^(B)gave them names: ^(C)Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.

^16 (A)But I have heard that you can give interpretations and ^(B)solve problems. ^(C)Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, ^(D)you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck and ^(E)shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

^12 (A)because an excellent spirit, knowledge, and ^(B)understanding ^(C)to interpret dreams, explain riddles, and ^(D)solve problems were found in this Daniel, ^(E)whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.”

⁸ At last Daniel came in before me—he who was named ^(A)Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is ^(B)the spirit of the holy gods^[a]—and I told him the dream, saying,

¹⁸ This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. And you, O ^(A)Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because ^(B)all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation, but you are able, for ^(C)the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

Daniel Interprets the Second Dream

¹⁹ Then Daniel, whose name was ^(D)Belteshazzar, was ^(E)dismayed for a while, and ^(F)his thoughts alarmed him. The king answered and said, “Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, ^(G)may the dream be for those who hate you ^(H)and its interpretation for your enemies!

³ And the king said to them, “I had a dream, and ^(A)my spirit is troubled to know the dream.” ⁴ Then ^(B)the Chaldeans said to the king in Aramaic,^{[a] (C)}“O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.” ⁵ The king answered and said to ^(D)the Chaldeans, “The word from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be ^(E)torn limb from limb, ^(F)and your ^(G)houses shall be laid in ruins. ⁶ But if you show the dream and its interpretation, ^(H)you shall receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. ^(I)Therefore show me the dream and its interpretation.” ⁷ They answered a second time and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation.”

³³ And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”

¹⁵ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. ^(A)I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
