¹² When he has taken away the multitude, his heart will be ^[a]lifted up; and he will cast down tens of thousands, but he will not prevail.

Submit to God, Resist the Devil

⁵ Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, ^(A)all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for

⁶ not a ^[a]novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.

²² And the people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” ²³ Then immediately an angel of the Lord ^(A)struck him, because ^(B)he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and ^[a]died.

Woe to the Wicked

^23 (A)And you have ^[a]lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the ^(B)vessels of ^[b]His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, ^(C)which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand ^(D)and owns all your ways, you have not glorified.

¹⁹ And because of the majesty that He gave him, ^(A)all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whomever he wished, he ^(B)executed; whomever he wished, he kept alive; whomever he wished, he set up; and whomever he wished, he put down. ^20 (C)But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.
