⁸ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself ^(A)with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

¹³ Then the Lord said, “So ^(A)shall the children of Israel eat their defiled bread among the Gentiles, where I will drive them.”

¹⁴ So I said, ^(B)“Ah, Lord God! Indeed I have never defiled myself from my youth till now; I have never eaten ^(C)what died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has ^(D)abominable^[a] flesh ever come into my mouth.”

^45 (A)For I am the Lord who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. ^(B)You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

⁴⁶ ‘This is the law ^[a]of the animals and the birds and every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that creeps on the earth, ^47 (C)to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.’ ”

¹⁸ Observe ^(A)Israel ^(B)after the flesh: ^(C)Are not those who eat of the sacrifices ^[a]partakers of the altar? ¹⁹ What am I saying then? ^(D)That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? ²⁰ Rather, that the things which the Gentiles ^(E)sacrifice ^(F)they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. ^21 (G)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and ^(H)the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the ^(I)Lord’s table and of the table of demons.

³⁷ Nevertheless he who stands steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but has power over his own will, and has so determined in his heart that he will keep his ^[a]virgin, does well.
