Solomon’s Wisdom

29 God gave Solomon wisdom(A) and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand(B) on the seashore. 30 Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East,(C) and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.(D) 31 He was wiser(E) than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. 32 He spoke three thousand proverbs(F) and his songs(G) numbered a thousand and five. 33 He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop(H) that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. 34 From all nations people came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings(I) of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.[a]

  1. Daniel 5:7 Or Chaldeans; also in verse 11

When the magicians,(A) enchanters, astrologers[a] and diviners(B) came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me.(C) Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar,(D) after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods(E) is in him.)

I said, “Belteshazzar, chief(F) of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods(G) is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me. 10 These are the visions I saw while lying in bed:(H) I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous.(I) 11 The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth.(J) 12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches;(K) from it every creature was fed.

13 “In the visions I saw while lying in bed,(L) I looked, and there before me was a holy one,(M) a messenger,[b] coming down from heaven. 14 He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree(N) and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches.(O) 15 But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field.

“‘Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven times[c] pass by for him.(P)

17 “‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High(Q) is sovereign(R) over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest(S) of people.’

18 “This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me.(T) But you can,(U) because the spirit of the holy gods(V) is in you.”(W)

So the king summoned the magicians,(A) enchanters, sorcerers(B) and astrologers[a](C) to tell him what he had dreamed.(D) When they came in and stood before the king, he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles(E) me and I want to know what it means.[b]

Then the astrologers answered the king,[c](F) “May the king live forever!(G) Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”

The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided:(H) If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces(I) and your houses turned into piles of rubble.(J) But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor.(K) So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”

Once more they replied, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”

Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty(L) for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me.”(M)

10 The astrologers(N) answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.(O) 11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods,(P) and they do not live among humans.”
