3 and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another.(A) 4 The first was like a lion and had eagles’ wings. Then, as I watched, its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a human being, and a human mind was given to it.(B) 5 Another beast appeared, a second one, that looked like a bear. It was raised up on one side, had three tusks[a] in its mouth among its teeth, and was told, “Arise, devour many bodies!” 6 After this, as I watched, another appeared, like a leopard. The beast had four wings of a bird on its back and four heads, and dominion was given to it.(C) 7 After this I saw in the visions by night a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth and was devouring, breaking in pieces, and stamping what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that preceded it, and it had ten horns.(D) 8 I was considering the horns when another horn appeared, a little one that came up among them. Three of the original horns were plucked up from before it. There were eyes like human eyes in this horn and a mouth speaking arrogantly.(E)
Judgment before the Ancient One
9 As I watched,
thrones were set in place,
and an Ancient One[b] took his throne;
his clothing was white as snow
and the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames,
and its wheels were burning fire.(F)
10 A stream of fire issued
and flowed out from his presence.
A thousand thousands served him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him.
The court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened.(G)
11 I watched then because of the noise of the arrogant words that the horn was speaking. And as I watched, the beast was put to death and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire.(H) 12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. 13 As I watched in the night visions,
I saw one like a human being[c]
coming with the clouds of heaven.
And he came to the Ancient One[d]
and was presented before him.(I)
14 To him was given dominion
and glory and kingship,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that shall not pass away,
and his kingship is one
that shall never be destroyed.(J)
Daniel’s Visions Interpreted
15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me,[e] and the visions of my head terrified me.(K) 16 I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter:(L) 17 “As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth.

4 “The first was like a lion,(B) and it had the wings of an eagle.(C) I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it.
5 “And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh!’(D)
6 “After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard.(E) And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.
7 “After that, in my vision(F) at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron(G) teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled(H) underfoot whatever was left.(I) It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.(J)
8 “While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little(K) one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being(L) and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(M)
9 “As I looked,
“thrones were set in place,
and the Ancient of Days(N) took his seat.(O)
His clothing was as white as snow;(P)
the hair of his head was white like wool.(Q)
His throne was flaming with fire,
and its wheels(R) were all ablaze.
10 A river of fire(S) was flowing,
coming out from before him.(T)
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
and the books(U) were opened.
11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking.(V) I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.(W) 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)
13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,[a](X) coming(Y) with the clouds of heaven.(Z) He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority,(AA) glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him.(AB) His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom(AC) is one that will never be destroyed.(AD)
The Interpretation of the Dream
15 “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.(AE) 16 I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.
“So he told me and gave me the interpretation(AF) of these things: 17 ‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth.
