Các thành cho người Lê-vi
35 CHÚA nói với Mô-se trong đồng bằng Mô-áp đối ngang Giê-ri-cô, gần sông Giô-đanh. Ngài bảo, 2 “Hãy truyền cho người Ít-ra-en cấp cho người Lê-vi các thành để ở lấy từ đất mà dân Ít-ra-en sẽ nhận. Ngoài ra cũng phải cấp cho người Lê-vi các đồng cỏ quanh các thành ấy. 3 Như thế người Lê-vi sẽ có thành để ở, cùng đồng cỏ để nuôi trâu bò, bầy súc vật và các thú vật khác. 4 Đồng cỏ các ngươi cấp cho người Lê-vi sẽ kéo dài năm trăm thước tính từ vách thành. 5 Ngoài ra phải đo một ngàn thước theo bốn phía quanh vách thành một ngàn thước phía Đông, một ngàn thước phía Nam, một ngàn thước phía Tây, và một ngàn thước phía Bắc của thành, còn thành thì nằm ở giữa. Đó sẽ là vùng đồng cỏ dành cho các thành của người Lê-vi. 6 Sáu trong số các thành các ngươi cấp cho người Lê-vi sẽ làm thành trú ẩn. Ai vô tình giết người nào sẽ có thể chạy đến một trong các thành đó để ẩn náu an toàn. Các ngươi cũng phải cấp bốn mươi hai thành khác cho người Lê-vi; 7 nghĩa là cấp cho người Lê-vi bốn mươi tám thành và đồng cỏ. 8 Chi tộc nào lớn thì cấp nhiều thành hơn chi tộc nhỏ. Mỗi chi tộc phải cấp một số thành cho người Lê-vi nhưng con số thành họ cấp tùy vào diện tích đất của chi tộc đó.”
9 Rồi CHÚA bảo Mô-se, 10 “Hãy dặn dân Ít-ra-en như sau: Khi các ngươi băng qua sông Giô-đanh vào xứ Ca-na-an, 11 thì các ngươi phải chọn một số thành làm thành trú ẩn để ai vô ý giết người có thể chạy đến đó trú ẩn an toàn. 12 Ở đó kẻ giết người vì vô ý sẽ được an toàn khỏi thân nhân của người bị giết, là người có nhiệm vụ trừng phạt kẻ sát nhân. Người đó sẽ không phải chết cho đến khi được xét xử công bằng trước tòa. 13 Sáu thành các ngươi cấp sẽ dùng làm thành trú ẩn. 14 Cấp ba thành phía Đông sông Giô-đanh, và ba thành trong xứ Ca-na-an làm thành trú ẩn. 15 Sáu thành đó là nơi trú ẩn an toàn cho các công dân Ít-ra-en cũng như cho người ngoại quốc sống giữa các ngươi. Ai trong những người đó vô ý giết người khác có thể chạy đến một trong các thành đó.
16 Ai dùng vũ khí bằng sắt [a] để giết người khác là kẻ sát nhân. Nó phải bị xử tử. 17 Ai dùng một viên đá để giết người khác là kẻ sát nhân. Nó phải bị xử tử. 18 Ai lượm một khúc cây để giết người là kẻ sát nhân. Nó phải bị xử tử. 19 Thân nhân người chết phải giết kẻ sát nhân; khi hai bên gặp nhau thì thân nhân [b] phải giết nó.
20 Ai vì ganh ghét, xô hay ném vật gì trúng người nào và làm cho người ấy chết; 21 ai lấy tay đánh chết người; nếu hành động đó do tư thù, thì người đó là kẻ sát nhân và phải bị xử tử. Khi thân nhân người chết gặp nó phải giết nó đi.
22 Nếu ai xô đẩy người khác vì vô ý, không phải do tư thù, hoặc vô tình ném vật gì trúng người nào, 23 hay ai vô ý làm rớt tảng đá trên người nào vì không thấy và làm người đó chết, không có dự mưu hại cũng chẳng do tư thù gì trước với người bị chết, 24 nếu quả như thế thì cộng đồng phải phân xử giữa thân nhân người bị chết và kẻ gây chết người, dựa theo các qui tắc trên đây. 25 Họ phải bảo vệ kẻ sát nhân khỏi tay thân nhân người chết, đưa kẻ gây chết người về thành trú ẩn và ở đó cho tới khi thầy tế lễ tối cao qua đời (thầy tế lễ tối cao là người được xức dầu thánh).
26 Người đó không được đi ra ngoài giới hạn của thành trú ẩn. 27 Nếu gặp nó ở bên ngoài thành thì thân nhân của người chết gặp kẻ sát nhân không chủ mưu có thể giết nó mà không bị mang tội giết người. 28 Kẻ gây chết người phải ở trong thành trú ẩn cho đến khi thầy tế lễ tối cao qua đời rồi mới được về nhà. 29 Đây là luật lệ cho các ngươi từ nay về sau áp dụng bất cứ nơi nào các ngươi sống.
30 Nếu ai giết người thì kẻ sát nhân chỉ có thể bị xử tử nếu có hai nhân chứng. Còn nếu chỉ có một nhân chứng, thì không đủ để xử tử.
31 Không được nhận tiền để tha chết cho một kẻ sát nhân đáng bị xử tử. Tên sát nhân phải bị xử tử.
32 Nếu ai chạy đến thành trú ẩn thì không được nhận tiền để nó trở về nhà trước khi thầy tế lễ tối cao qua đời.
33 Đừng để vụ sát nhân làm dơ bẩn xứ ngươi. Cách duy nhất để làm sạch tội giết người vô tội là phải xử tử kẻ giết người. 34 Ta là CHÚA, Đấng sống giữa dân Ít-ra-en. Ta sống trong xứ đó với các ngươi cho nên đừng làm dơ bẩn xứ.”

35 El Señor habló con Moisés en los campos de Moab, junto al Jordán, frente a Jericó, y le dijo:
2 «Ordena a los hijos de Israel que, de los terrenos que reciban en posesión, deben dar a los levitas ciudades donde ellos puedan vivir, y darles también los ejidos alrededor de esas ciudades. 3 Así los levitas tendrán ciudades donde vivir, y los ejidos de esas ciudades serán para sus animales y ganados, y para todas sus bestias. 4 Los ejidos de las ciudades que den a los levitas deben tener un perímetro de mil codos de la muralla de la ciudad hacia afuera. 5 Fuera de las ciudades, los ejidos a su alrededor deben medir dos mil codos por el este, dos mil codos por el sur, dos mil codos por el oeste, y dos mil codos por el norte, y la ciudad quedará en el centro. 6 Seis de las ciudades que darán a los levitas serán de refugio, para que los homicidas puedan refugiarse en ellas. Además de estas seis ciudades, les darán otras cuarenta y dos, 7 de modo que lo que darán a los levitas será un total de cuarenta y ocho ciudades con sus ejidos. 8 Estas ciudades las tomarán de lo que los hijos de Israel reciban en propiedad. Del que tenga mucho, tomarán mucho; del que tenga poco, tomarán poco. Cada uno dará a los levitas una parte de sus ciudades, según lo que haya recibido en propiedad.»(A)

9 El Señor habló con Moisés, y le dijo:
10 «Habla con los hijos de Israel, y diles: “Cuando ustedes hayan pasado a la tierra de Canaán, al otro lado del Jordán, 11 designarán algunas ciudades como ciudades de refugio,(C) a las que pueda huir aquel homicida que, sin proponérselo, hiera de muerte a alguien. 12 Esas ciudades servirán para refugiarse del que quiera tomar venganza, pues el homicida no será condenado a muerte hasta que sea juzgado en presencia de la congregación.
13 »”De las ciudades que den a los levitas, seis serán ciudades de refugio. 14 Tres de estas ciudades de refugio estarán en la ribera este del Jordán, y las otras tres ciudades estarán en la tierra de Canaán. 15 Estas seis ciudades brindarán refugio a los hijos de Israel y a los extranjeros que habiten entre ellos. Cualquiera que, sin proponérselo, hiera de muerte a otro, podrá huir a ellas.
16 »”Si la agresión se hizo con algún instrumento de hierro, y la víctima muere, se trata de un homicidio, y el homicida será condenado a muerte.
17 »”Si la agresión se hizo con una piedra en la mano, capaz de causar la muerte, y la víctima muere, se trata de un homicidio, y el homicida será condenado a muerte.
18 »”Si la agresión se hizo con un objeto de madera, capaz de causar la muerte, y la víctima muere, se trata de un homicidio, y el homicida será condenado a muerte.
19 »”El que quiera vengar esa muerte, podrá matar al homicida, y matarlo si lo encuentra.
20 »”Si el homicida empuja a su víctima por odio, o le arroja algo porque ya lo acechaba, y la víctima muere; 21 o si por enemistad lo hiere con su propia mano, y la víctima muere, se trata de un homicidio, y el agresor será condenado a muerte. El que quiera vengar la muerte de la víctima podrá matar al homicida cuando lo encuentre.
22 »”Pero si el agresor lo empuja, o arroja contra la víctima algún objeto, sin proponérselo y sin mediar ninguna enemistad ni asechanza, 23 o sin fijarse deja caer sobre la víctima alguna piedra capaz de matarlo, y la víctima muere sin que el agresor fuera su enemigo o procurara su mal, 24 entonces la congregación juzgará entre el homicida y el que quiera vengar la muerte, en conformidad con estas leyes:
25 »”La congregación librará al homicida de las manos del vengador, y lo hará volver a la ciudad en la que se haya refugiado, y el homicida se quedará a vivir allá hasta que muera el sumo sacerdote, el cual fue ungido con el aceite santo.
26 »”Si el homicida sale más allá de los límites de la ciudad en la que se refugió, 27 y el vengador de la víctima lo halla fuera de los límites de esa ciudad de refugio, y lo mata, el vengador no será culpable de su muerte, 28 pues el homicida debe quedarse en su ciudad de refugio hasta que muera el sumo sacerdote, y volverá a la tierra de su propiedad sólo después de que haya muerto el sumo sacerdote.
Ley para los testigos y el rescate
29 »”Dondequiera que ustedes vivan, esta ley estará vigente para los juicios entre sus descendientes:
30 »”Todo el que dé muerte a alguien es un homicida, y será condenado a muerte por el testimonio de varios testigos. Un solo testigo no basta para condenar a muerte a una persona.(D)
31 »”No podrán recibir dinero a cambio de la vida de un homicida, pues está condenado a muerte, y sin falta morirá.
32 »”No podrán recibir dinero a cambio del que haya huido a una ciudad de refugio, para que vuelva a vivir en su tierra, antes de la muerte del sumo sacerdote.
33 »”No contaminen la tierra donde vivan, porque la sangre derramada hará impura la tierra, y sólo se purificará de la sangre derramada en ella con la sangre del que la derramó.
34 »”No contaminen la tierra que habitan, porque yo habito en medio de ustedes. Yo, el Señor, habito en medio de los hijos de Israel.”»

Towns for the Levites
35 On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho,(A) the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Command the Israelites to give the Levites towns to live in(B) from the inheritance the Israelites will possess. And give them pasturelands(C) around the towns. 3 Then they will have towns to live in and pasturelands for the cattle they own and all their other animals.(D)
4 “The pasturelands around the towns that you give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits[a] from the town wall. 5 Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits[b](E) on the east side, two thousand on the south side, two thousand on the west and two thousand on the north, with the town in the center. They will have this area as pastureland for the towns.(F)
Cities of Refuge(G)
6 “Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee.(H) In addition, give them forty-two other towns. 7 In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands. 8 The towns you give the Levites from the land the Israelites possess are to be given in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: Take many towns from a tribe that has many, but few from one that has few.”(I)
9 Then the Lord said to Moses: 10 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you cross the Jordan into Canaan,(J) 11 select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone(K) accidentally(L) may flee. 12 They will be places of refuge from the avenger,(M) so that anyone accused of murder(N) may not die before they stand trial before the assembly.(O) 13 These six towns you give will be your cities of refuge.(P) 14 Give three on this side of the Jordan and three in Canaan as cities of refuge. 15 These six towns will be a place of refuge for Israelites and for foreigners residing among them, so that anyone who has killed another accidentally can flee there.
16 “‘If anyone strikes someone a fatal blow with an iron object, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death.(Q) 17 Or if anyone is holding a stone and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. 18 Or if anyone is holding a wooden object and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. 19 The avenger of blood(R) shall put the murderer to death; when the avenger comes upon the murderer, the avenger shall put the murderer to death.(S) 20 If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at them intentionally(T) so that they die 21 or if out of enmity one person hits another with their fist so that the other dies, that person is to be put to death;(U) that person is a murderer. The avenger of blood(V) shall put the murderer to death when they meet.
22 “‘But if without enmity someone suddenly pushes another or throws something at them unintentionally(W) 23 or, without seeing them, drops on them a stone heavy enough to kill them, and they die, then since that other person was not an enemy and no harm was intended, 24 the assembly(X) must judge between the accused and the avenger of blood according to these regulations. 25 The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send the accused back to the city of refuge to which they fled. The accused must stay there until the death of the high priest,(Y) who was anointed(Z) with the holy oil.(AA)
26 “‘But if the accused ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which they fled 27 and the avenger of blood finds them outside the city, the avenger of blood may kill the accused without being guilty of murder. 28 The accused must stay in the city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the death of the high priest may they return to their own property.
29 “‘This is to have the force of law(AB) for you throughout the generations to come,(AC) wherever you live.(AD)
30 “‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.(AE)
31 “‘Do not accept a ransom(AF) for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. They are to be put to death.
32 “‘Do not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a city of refuge and so allow them to go back and live on their own land before the death of the high priest.
33 “‘Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land,(AG) and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it. 34 Do not defile the land(AH) where you live and where I dwell,(AI) for I, the Lord, dwell among the Israelites.’”
