Dân Ít-ra-en cúng thờ thần Ba-anh ở Phê-ô
25 Trong khi dân Ít-ra-en đang tạm dừng ở Si-tim thì một số đàn ông bắt đầu ăn nằm [a] với các phụ nữ Mô-áp. 2 Đàn bà Mô-áp mời họ dâng của lễ cho các thần mình, rồi người Ít-ra-en ăn các đồ cúng các thần ấy. 3 Vậy dân Ít-ra-en bắt đầu cúng thờ thần Ba-anh ở Phê-ô nên CHÚA vô cùng giận dữ.
4 Ngài bảo Mô-se, “Giữa ban ngày và trước mặt CHÚA, hãy mang xử tử tất cả những người lãnh đạo dân chúng! Rồi CHÚA sẽ nguôi giận đối với dân Ít-ra-en.”
5 Mô-se liền bảo các quan án Ít-ra-en, “Mỗi người trong các ông phải giết bất cứ ai đã thờ cúng Ba-anh Phê-ô.”
6 Mô-se cùng toàn dân Ít-ra-en nhóm lại nơi cửa Lều Họp và khóc lóc. Có một người Ít-ra-en mang một phụ nữ Mi-đi-an đến cho anh em mình [b] trước mắt Mô-se và toàn thể dân chúng. 7 Thấy vậy, Phi-nê-ha, con trai Ê-lê-a-sa, tức cháu thầy tế lễ A-rôn, rời chỗ họp đi lấy cây giáo. 8 Ông đi theo người Ít-ra-en vào lều [c], rồi đâm chết người đó cùng người đàn bà, thì bệnh dịch khủng khiếp giữa vòng dân Ít-ra-en liền dừng lại. 9 Bệnh dịch đó giết hai mươi bốn ngàn người.
10 CHÚA bảo Mô-se, 11 “Phi-nê-ha, con Ê-lê-a-sa, cháu thầy tế lễ A-rôn, đã cứu dân Ít-ra-en khỏi cơn thịnh nộ ta. Người gớm ghét tội lỗi như ta vậy. Vì người đã phục hồi danh dự ta giữa vòng họ, nên ta không giết họ. 12 Vậy hãy bảo Phi-nê-ha rằng, ta lập ước với người. 13 Người và dòng dõi người sẽ luôn luôn làm thầy tế lễ vì người rất quan tâm đến danh dự của Thượng Đế mình. Người đã tẩy sạch doanh trại cho dân Ít-ra-en.”
14 Xim-ri, con Xa-lu, là tên của người Ít-ra-en bị giết cùng với người đàn bà Mi-đi-an. Người là trưởng một gia đình thuộc chi tộc Xi-mê-ôn. 15 Còn Cô-bi [d] là tên của người đàn bà Mi-đi-an bị giết. Cô ta là con gái Xu-rơ, trưởng tộc của một dòng họ Mi-đi-an.
16 CHÚA bảo Mô-se, 17 “Người Mi-đi-an là kẻ thù các ngươi, phải giết chúng. 18 Họ đã xem các ngươi như kẻ thù khi phỉnh gạt các ngươi tại Phê-ô, và cũng vì các ngươi đã giết Cô-bi, chị của họ, tức con gái của một trưởng tộc Mi-đi-an. Đó là người đàn bà bị giết khi bệnh dịch bộc phát lúc dân chúng phạm tội tại Phê-ô.”

- Dân Số 25:1 ăn nằm Có nghĩa là phạm tội nhục dục. Tội nầy thường đi đôi với việc thờ các thần giả. Đây có nghĩa là các người đàn ông Ít-ra-en bất trung với vợ mình và cũng bất trung với Thượng Đế bằng cách đi vào các đền thờ của dân Mô-áp.
- Dân Số 25:6 anh em mình Hay “gia đình.”
- Dân Số 25:8 lều Đây có thể là lều của người đàn bà, chứng tỏ người ấy là một gái điếm, thờ thần giả Ba-anh Phê-ô.
- Dân Số 25:15 Cô-bi Có nghĩa là “sự dối trá của tôi.”

Moab Seduces Israel
25 While Israel was staying in Shittim,(A) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality(B) with Moabite(C) women,(D) 2 who invited them to the sacrifices(E) to their gods.(F) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to(G) the Baal of Peor.(H) And the Lord’s anger burned against them.
4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders(I) of these people, kill them and expose(J) them in broad daylight before the Lord,(K) so that the Lord’s fierce anger(L) may turn away from Israel.”
5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death(M) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”(N)
6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite(O) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping(P) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas(Q) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear(R) in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;(S) 9 but those who died in the plague(T) numbered 24,000.(U)
10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.(V) Since he was as zealous for my honor(W) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace(X) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,(Y) because he was zealous(Z) for the honor(AA) of his God and made atonement(AB) for the Israelites.”(AC)
14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman(AD) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.(AE) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi(AF) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.(AG)
16 The Lord said to Moses,(AH) 17 “Treat the Midianites(AI) as enemies(AJ) and kill them.(AK) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident(AL) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”

25 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.
4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.
5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.
6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
16 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
