Ba-lác Mời Ba-la-am Ðến Giúp
22 Sau đó dân I-sơ-ra-ên nhổ trại ra đi và đến đóng trại trong Ðồng Bằng Mô-áp, bên kia Sông Giô-đanh, đối ngang Giê-ri-cô. 2 Bấy giờ Ba-lác con trai Xíp-pô thấy tất cả những gì dân I-sơ-ra-ên đã làm cho dân A-mô-ri. 3 Dân Mô-áp rất sợ dân I-sơ-ra-ên bởi vì dân ấy quá đông. Người Mô-áp lấy làm kinh hãi vì phải đối đầu với dân I-sơ-ra-ên. 4 Dân Mô-áp nói với các vị trưởng lão của dân Mi-đi-an, “Ðám dân ấy sẽ gặm hết chúng ta như bò gặm cỏ ngoài đồng.”
Vả, lúc ấy Ba-lác con trai Xíp-pô đang làm vua dân Mô-áp. 5 Ông sai các sứ giả đến gặp Ba-la-am con trai Bê-ô ở Bê-thơ, bên bờ sông Ơ-phơ-rát, trong xứ A-mau,[a] để triệu mời ông ấy rằng, “Nầy, có một dân ra từ Ai-cập. Chúng đã tràn ra khắp đất và hiện nay đang đóng trại sát bên tôi. 6 Bây giờ xin ông đến nguyền rủa dân ấy cho tôi, vì chúng mạnh hơn tôi, may ra tôi sẽ đánh bại chúng và đuổi chúng ra khỏi xứ, vì tôi biết rằng người nào được ông chúc phước sẽ được ban phước, còn kẻ nào bị ông nguyền rủa sẽ phải mang họa.”
7 Vậy các trưởng lão của dân Mô-áp và các trưởng lão của dân Mi-đi-an lên đường, trong tay mang theo tiền lễ, để thỉnh xin lời sấm. Họ đến gặp Ba-la-am và chuyển sứ điệp của Vua Ba-lác. 8 Ông nói với họ, “Xin quý vị ở lại đây đêm nay, tôi sẽ trả lời quý vị theo những gì Chúa phán với tôi.” Vậy các sứ thần của Mô-áp ở lại với Ba-la-am. 9 Ðức Chúa Trời đến với Ba-la-am và hỏi, “Những kẻ đang ở với ngươi là ai thế?”
10 Ba-la-am thưa với Ðức Chúa Trời, “Vua Ba-lác con trai Xíp-pô của dân Mô-áp phái người đến với con nói rằng, 11 ‘Có một dân ra từ Ai-cập. Chúng đã tràn ra khắp đất. Bây giờ xin ông đến nguyền rủa dân ấy giúp tôi, may ra tôi sẽ đánh bại chúng và đuổi chúng đi.’”
12 Ðức Chúa Trời phán với Ba-la-am, “Ngươi sẽ không đi với những kẻ ấy. Ngươi sẽ không được nguyền rủa dân ấy, vì họ đã được ban phước.” 13 Sáng ngày Ba-la-am trỗi dậy và nói với các sứ thần của Ba-lác, “Xin quý vị lên đường trở về xứ mình, vì Chúa không cho phép tôi đi với quý vị.” 14 Vậy các sứ thần của Mô-áp đứng dậy, trở về với Ba-lác, và tâu, “Ba-la-am từ chối đi với chúng tôi.”
15 Ba-lác bèn sai một phái đoàn khác, gồm nhiều sứ thần hơn và có chức vụ cao trọng hơn phái đoàn trước, ra đi. 16 Họ đến với Ba-la-am và nói với ông, “Vua Ba-lác con trai Xíp-pô nói thế nầy, ‘Xin ông đừng để điều gì ngăn trở ông đến với tôi, 17 vì tôi sẽ làm cho ông được tôn trọng nhiều hơn. 18 Nhưng Ba-la-am trả lời bầy tôi của Ba-lác, “Dù Ba-lác có cho tôi một nhà đầy bạc và vàng, tôi cũng không thể làm sai lời Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của tôi, mà bớt đi hay thêm vào điều gì. 19 Vậy bây giờ xin mời quý vị ở lại đây đêm nay để tôi xem Chúa có phán thêm cho tôi điều gì chăng.”
20 Ðêm đó Ðức Chúa Trời đến với Ba-la-am và phán với ông, “Nếu những người ấy đã đến triệu mời ngươi, hãy đứng dậy và đi với chúng, nhưng ngươi chỉ làm những gì Ta bảo ngươi làm.” 21 Vậy sáng ngày Ba-la-am thức dậy, thắng con lừa cái của mình, và lên đường với các sứ thần của Mô-áp.
Con Lừa Cái của Ba-la-am
22 Bấy giờ cơn giận của Ðức Chúa Trời bừng lên vì ông đã ra đi. Thiên Sứ của Chúa đứng trên đường để cản trở ông. Vả, lúc ấy ông đang cỡi con lừa cái của ông, và có hai người đầy tớ đi theo. 23 Con lừa thấy vị thiên sứ đứng chận giữa đường, trong tay cầm một thanh gươm trần, con lừa bèn tránh ra khỏi đường và đi tẻ vào trong ruộng. Ba-la-am bèn đánh con lừa và bắt nó phải quay lên đường trở lại.
24 Sau đó Thiên Sứ của Chúa đứng chận ở một chỗ đường hẹp, giữa hai vườn nho, hai bên đều có vách đá. 25 Khi con lừa thấy Thiên Sứ của Chúa, nó nép sát vào vách, làm cho chân của Ba-la-am bị ép vào vách đá, nên ông đánh nó nữa.
26 Thiên Sứ của Chúa đi xa một khoảng nữa, đứng chận ở một chỗ thật hẹp, không cách nào nép qua bên phải hay bên trái được. 27 Khi con lừa thấy Thiên Sứ của Chúa, nó khuỵu xuống bên dưới Ba-la-am. Ba-la-am nổi giận, lấy cậy gậy của ông, và đánh con lừa.
28 Bấy giờ Chúa mở miệng con lừa, và nó nói với Ba-la-am, “Tôi có làm gì ông mà ông đánh tôi ba lần?”
29 Ba-la-am trả lời con lừa, “Bởi vì mầy coi thường tao. Giá mà tao có cây gươm trong tay, tao đã giết mầy rồi.”
30 Nhưng con lừa nói với Ba-la-am, “Có phải tôi là con lừa của ông mà từ trước đến nay ông vẫn cỡi không? Tôi có thói trở chứng với ông như vậy chăng?”
Ông đáp, “Không.”
31 Bấy giờ Chúa mở mắt Ba-la-am, và ông thấy Thiên Sứ của Chúa đứng giữa đường, trong tay cầm một thanh gươm trần; ông liền cúi đầu, rồi nằm sấp mặt xuống đất. 32 Thiên Sứ của Chúa nói với ông, “Tại sao ngươi đánh con lừa của ngươi ba lần? Ta đi ra để cản ngươi, bởi vì đường lối của ngươi không ngay thẳng trước mặt Ta. 33 Con lừa đã thấy Ta và đã tránh Ta ba lần. Nếu nó không tránh Ta, chắc chắn Ta đã giết ngươi rồi và để cho nó sống.”
34 Ba-la-am thưa với Thiên Sứ của Chúa, “Con đã có tội. Con không biết Ngài đã đứng giữa đường để cản lối con. Vậy bây giờ nếu việc con ra đi làm cho Ngài phật lòng, con xin quay về.”

Balak Sends for Balaam
22 Then the ·people [L sons/T children of] of Israel went to the plains of Moab, and they camped near the Jordan River across from Jericho.
2 Balak son of Zippor saw everything the Israelites had done to the Amorites. 3 And Moab ·was scared of [dreaded] so many Israelites; truly, Moab was terrified by them.
4 The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, “·These people [L This community/assembly/congregation] will ·take [lick up] everything around us like an ox ·eating [licking] grass.”
Balak son of Zippor was the king of Moab at this time. 5 He sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, near the Euphrates River in ·his native land [or the land of Amaw]. Balak said, “A nation has come out of Egypt that covers the land. They have ·camped [L settled] next to me, 6 and they are too powerful for me. So come and put a curse on them. Maybe then I can defeat them and ·make them leave [drive them from] the area. I know that if you bless someone, the blessings happen, and if you put a curse on someone, it happens.”
7 The elders of Moab and Midian went with ·payment [L fee for divination] in their hands. When they found Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.
8 Balaam said to them, “Stay here for the night, and I will tell you what the Lord tells me.” So the Moabite leaders stayed with him.
9 God came to Balaam and asked, “Who are these men with you?”
10 Balaam said to God, “The king of Moab, Balak son of Zippor, sent them to me with this message: 11 ‘A ·nation [people] has come out of Egypt that ·covers [spreads over] the land. So come and put a curse on them, and maybe I can fight them and force them out of my land.’”
12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. Don’t put a curse on those people, because I have blessed them.”
13 The next morning Balaam ·awoke [rose] and said to Balak’s leaders, “Go back to your own country; the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”
14 So the Moabite leaders went back to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
15 So Balak sent other leaders—this time there were more of them, and they were more ·important [distinguished]. 16 They went to Balaam and said, “Balak son of Zippor says this: Please don’t let anything stop you from coming to me. 17 I will ·pay you very well [make you wealthy; honor you], and I will do what you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me.”
18 But Balaam answered Balak’s servants, “King Balak could give me his palace full of silver and gold, but I cannot ·disobey [transgress] the Lord my God in anything, great or small. 19 You stay here tonight as the other men did, and I will find out what more the Lord tells me.”
20 That night God came to Balaam and said, “These men have come to ask you to go with them. Go, but only do what I tell you.”
Balaam’s Donkey Speaks
21 Balaam got up the next morning and put a saddle on his donkey. Then he went with the Moabite leaders. 22 But God became angry because Balaam went, so the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord stood in the road to ·stop [challenge] Balaam. Balaam was riding his donkey, and he had two servants with him. 23 When the donkey saw the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, the donkey left the road and went into the field. Balaam ·hit [struck] the donkey to force her back on the road.
24 Later, the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord stood on a narrow path between two vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 Again the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, and she walked close to one wall, ·crushing [squeezing; scraping] Balaam’s foot against it. So he ·hit [struck] her again.
26 The ·angel [messenger] of the Lord went ahead again and stood at a narrow place, too narrow to turn left or right. 27 When the donkey saw the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam. This made him so angry that he ·hit [struck] her with his stick. 28 Then the Lord made the donkey talk, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to make you ·hit [strike] me three times?”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made me look foolish! I wish I had a sword in my hand! I would kill you right now!”
30 But the donkey said to Balaam, “·I am [L Am I not…?] your very own donkey, which you have ridden for years. Have I ever done this to you before?”
“No,” Balaam said.
31 Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam and let Balaam see the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord, who was standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand. Then Balaam bowed facedown on the ground.
32 The ·angel [messenger] of the Lord asked Balaam, “Why have you ·hit [struck] your donkey three times? I have stood here to ·stop [challenge] you, because what you are doing is wrong. 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me three times [C it was more spiritually sensitive than Balaam]. If she had not turned away, I would have killed you by now, but I would have let her live.”
34 Then Balaam said to the ·angel [messenger] of the Lord, “I have sinned; I did not know you were standing in the road to stop me. If I am wrong, I will go back.”
35 The ·angel [messenger] of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with these men, but say only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s leaders.
36 When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at Ar in Moab, which was beside the Arnon, at the edge of his ·country [boundary]. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “·I had asked you before [L Did I not send for you…?] to come quickly. Why didn’t you come to me? ·I am [L Am I not…?] able to ·reward you well [give you wealth].”
38 But Balaam answered, “I have come to you now, but I can’t say just anything. I can only say what God tells me to say.”
39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40 Balak offered cattle and sheep as a sacrifice and gave some meat to Balaam and the leaders with him.
41 The next morning Balak took Balaam to Bamoth Baal; from there he could see the edge of the ·Israelite camp [L people].

Balak Summons Balaam
22 Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab(A) and camped along the Jordan(B) across from Jericho.(C)
2 Now Balak son of Zippor(D) saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, 3 and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread(E) because of the Israelites.
4 The Moabites(F) said to the elders of Midian,(G) “This horde is going to lick up everything(H) around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.(I)”
So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5 sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor,(J) who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River,(K) in his native land. Balak said:
“A people has come out of Egypt;(L) they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. 6 Now come and put a curse(M) on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land.(N) For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”
7 The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination.(O) When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.
8 “Spend the night here,” Balaam said to them, “and I will report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me.(P)” So the Moabite officials stayed with him.
9 God came to Balaam(Q) and asked,(R) “Who are these men with you?”
10 Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message: 11 ‘A people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.’”
12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.(S)”
13 The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak’s officials, “Go back to your own country, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”
14 So the Moabite officials returned to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
15 Then Balak sent other officials, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. 16 They came to Balaam and said:
“This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, 17 because I will reward you handsomely(T) and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse(U) on these people for me.”
18 But Balaam answered them, “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God.(V) 19 Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.(W)”
20 That night God came to Balaam(X) and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.”(Y)
Balaam’s Donkey
21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. 22 But God was very angry(Z) when he went, and the angel of the Lord(AA) stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword(AB) in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it(AC) to get it back on the road.
24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.
26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry(AD) and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth,(AE) and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?(AF)”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.(AG)”
30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?”
“No,” he said.
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes,(AH) and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.
32 The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.[a] 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now,(AI) but I would have spared it.”
34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned.(AJ) I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.”
35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s officials.
36 When Balak(AK) heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon(AL) border, at the edge of his territory. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?”
38 “Well, I have come to you now,” Balaam replied. “But I can’t say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth.”(AM)
39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep,(AN) and gave some to Balaam and the officials who were with him. 41 The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal,(AO) and from there he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp.(AP)

8 Balán los invitó a pasar allí la noche, prometiendo comunicarles después lo que el Señor dijera. Y los oficiales se quedaron con él.

—¿Quiénes son estos hombres que están contigo?

—Son los mensajeros que envió Balac, hijo de Zipor, que es el rey de Moab. Los envió a decirme: 11 “Un pueblo que salió de Egipto cubre ahora toda la tierra. Ven a maldecirlos por mí. Tal vez así pueda yo luchar contra ellos y echarlos fuera de mi territorio”.
12 Pero Dios dijo a Balán:
—No irás con ellos ni pronunciarás ninguna maldición sobre los israelitas, porque son un pueblo bendito.
13 La mañana siguiente Balán se levantó y dijo a los oficiales enviados por Balac: «Regresen a su tierra, porque el Señor no quiere que yo vaya con ustedes».
14 Los oficiales moabitas regresaron adonde estaba Balac y dijeron: «Balán no quiere venir con nosotros».
15 Balac envió entonces a otros oficiales, más numerosos y distinguidos que los primeros, 16 quienes fueron y dijeron a Balán:
—Esto es lo que dice Balac, hijo de Zipor: No permitas que nada te impida venir a verme, 17 porque yo te recompensaré con creces y haré todo lo que tú me pidas. Te ruego que vengas y maldigas por mí a este pueblo.
18 Pero Balán respondió a los siervos de Balac:
—Aun si Balac me diera su palacio lleno de oro y de plata, yo no podría hacer nada grande ni pequeño, sino ajustarme al mandamiento del Señor mi Dios. 19 Ustedes pueden también quedarse aquí esta noche, mientras yo averiguo si el Señor quiere decirme alguna otra cosa.
20 Aquella noche Dios se apareció a Balán y dijo: «Ya que estos hombres han venido a llamarte, ve con ellos, pero solo harás lo que yo te ordene».
Balán y su burra
21 Balán se levantó por la mañana, ensilló su burra y partió con los oficiales de Moab. 22 Mientras iba con ellos, la ira de Dios se encendió y en el camino el ángel del Señor se hizo presente, dispuesto a no dejarlo pasar. Balán iba montado en su burra y sus dos criados lo acompañaban. 23 Cuando la burra vio al ángel del Señor en medio del camino con la espada desenvainada, se apartó del camino y se fue por el campo. Pero Balán la golpeó para hacerla volver al camino.
24 El ángel del Señor se detuvo en un sendero estrecho que estaba entre dos viñas, con cercos de piedra en ambos lados. 25 Cuando la burra vio al ángel del Señor, se arrimó contra la pared, apretando el pie de Balán contra ella. Entonces Balán volvió a pegarle.
26 El ángel del Señor se les adelantó y se detuvo en un lugar más estrecho, donde ya no había hacia dónde ir, ni a derecha ni a izquierda. 27 Cuando la burra vio al ángel del Señor, se echó al suelo con Balán encima. Entonces se encendió la ira de Balán y golpeó a la burra con un palo. 28 Pero el Señor hizo hablar a la burra, y esta dijo a Balán:
—¿Se puede saber qué te he hecho, para que me hayas pegado tres veces?
29 Balán respondió:
—¡Te has venido burlando de mí! Si hubiera tenido una espada en la mano, te habría matado de inmediato.
30 La burra contestó a Balán:
—¿Acaso no soy la burra sobre la que siempre has montado hasta el día de hoy? ¿Alguna vez te hice algo así?
—No —respondió Balán.
31 El Señor abrió los ojos de Balán y este pudo ver en el camino al ángel del Señor empuñando la espada. Entonces, Balán se inclinó y se postró rostro en tierra.
32 El ángel del Señor preguntó:
—¿Por qué golpeaste tres veces a tu burra? ¿No te das cuenta de que vengo dispuesto a no dejarte pasar porque he visto que tus caminos son malos?[b] 33 Cuando la burra me vio, se apartó de mí tres veces. De no haber sido por ella, tú estarías ya muerto y ella seguiría con vida.
34 Balán dijo al ángel del Señor:
—He pecado. No me di cuenta de tu presencia en el camino para cerrarme el paso. Ahora bien, como esto te parece mal, voy a regresar.
35 Pero el ángel del Señor dijo a Balán:
—Ve con esos hombres, pero limítate a decir solo lo que yo te mande.
Y Balán se fue con los oficiales que Balac había enviado.
Balac se encuentra con Balán
36 Cuando Balac se enteró de que Balán venía, salió a recibirlo en una ciudad moabita que está en la frontera del río Arnón. 37 Balac dijo a Balán:
—¿Acaso no te mandé llamar? ¿Por qué no viniste a mí? ¿Crees que no soy capaz de recompensarte?
38 —¡Bueno, ya estoy aquí! —contestó Balán—. Solo que no podré decir nada que Dios no ponga en mi boca.
39 De allí se fueron Balán y Balac a Quiriat Jusot. 40 Balac ofreció en sacrificio vacas y ovejas, y las compartió con Balán y los oficiales que estaban con él. 41 A la mañana siguiente, Balac llevó a Balán a Bamot Baal, desde donde Balán pudo ver parte del campamento israelita.
