Cô-ra, Ða-than, và A-bi-ram Dấy Loạn
16 Bấy giờ Cô-ra con trai của Ít-ha, cháu của Kê-hát, trong chi tộc Lê-vi, cùng với Ða-than và A-bi-ram hai con trai của Ê-li-áp, và Ôn con trai của Pê-lết, những người trong chi tộc Ru-bên, kéo theo họ 2 hai trăm năm mươi người I-sơ-ra-ên –những người quyền thế của hội chúng, những người lãnh đạo của dân, những người có danh tiếng– để chống lại Môi-se. 3 Họ tập họp trước mặt Môi-se và A-rôn, rồi nói, “Các ông thật là quá lắm rồi! Mọi người trong cả hội chúng đều là thánh, và Chúa đang ngự giữa họ. Thế thì tại sao các ông tự cho mình có quyền trên hội chúng của Chúa?”
4 Khi Môi-se nghe như thế ông sấp mặt xuống đất. 5 Ðoạn ông nói với Cô-ra và đồng bọn của ông ấy, “Sáng mai Chúa sẽ cho chúng ta biết ai thuộc về Ngài, ai là thánh, và ai được phép đến gần Ngài. 6 Thưa ông Cô-ra và mọi người trong nhóm của ông, xin hãy làm điều nầy: Hãy lấy lư hương của quý vị; 7 ngày mai hãy để lửa vào lư hương, sau đó hãy bỏ hương vào lửa trước mặt Chúa. Người nào được Chúa chọn sẽ là người thánh. Hỡi các con cháu của Lê-vi, các người thật là quá lắm.”
8 Môi-se nói với Cô-ra, “Hỡi các con cháu của Lê-vi, xin hãy nghe đây: 9 Há là một việc nhỏ mà Ðức Chúa Trời của I-sơ-ra-ên đã biệt riêng các ông ra từ giữa hội chúng I-sơ-ra-ên, để các ông được đến gần Ngài, hầu làm những công việc trong Ðền Tạm của Chúa, và đứng trước hội chúng và phục vụ họ chăng? 10 Còn ông, Ngài đã cho ông được đến gần Ngài, với tất cả anh em người Lê-vi của ông, thế mà ông còn muốn kiếm chức tư tế nữa sao? 11 Rõ ràng là ông và cả đồng bọn của ông đã hiệp nhau chống lại Chúa, chứ A-rôn là ai mà các ông lằm bằm chống ông ấy?”
12 Môi-se sai người đến mời Ða-than và A-bi-ram, hai con trai của Ê-li-áp, nhưng họ trả lời, “Chúng tôi không đến đâu. 13 Ông đã đem chúng tôi ra khỏi một xứ đượm sữa và mật để giết chúng tôi trong đồng hoang, như vậy vẫn chưa đủ sao mà ông còn muốn làm chúa trên tất cả chúng tôi nữa? 14 Rõ ràng là ông không đem chúng tôi vào một xứ đượm sữa và mật, hoặc ban cho chúng tôi được hưởng những đồng ruộng và vườn nho. Bộ ông tính móc hết mắt của những người nầy sao? Chúng tôi không đến đâu!”
15 Môi-se rất giận và thưa với Chúa, “Cầu xin Ngài đừng nhậm của lễ họ dâng. Con không hề lấy một con lừa nào của họ và cũng chưa hề làm hại ai trong họ.” 16 Môi-se nói với Cô-ra, “Xin ông và đồng bọn của ông đến trình diện trước mặt Chúa ngày mai; ông, đồng bọn của ông, và cả A-rôn nữa. 17 Xin mỗi người hãy mang lư hương của mình đến, rồi bỏ hương vào; mỗi người trong các ông hãy dâng hương lên trước mặt Chúa, tức hai trăm năm mươi lư hương. Cả ông và A-rôn nữa, mỗi người hãy mang lư hương của mình đến.”
18 Vậy mỗi người đều lấy lư hương của mình, để lửa vào trong các lư hương ấy, và bỏ hương vào trong lửa, rồi đứng trước cửa Lều Hội Kiến với Môi-se và A-rôn. 19 Bấy giờ Cô-ra đã triệu tập toàn thể hội chúng chống lại hai ông; họ tụ họp nhau trước cửa Lều Hội Kiến. Vinh quang của Chúa hiện ra cho cả hội chúng thấy.
20 Chúa phán với Môi-se và A-rôn, 21 “Các ngươi hãy tách rời khỏi hội chúng nầy, để Ta thiêu rụi chúng trong giây lát.”
22 Hai ông liền sấp mặt xuống đất và thưa, “Lạy Ðức Chúa Trời là Thần[a] ban sinh khí cho mọi loài xác thịt, lẽ nào chỉ vì một người phạm tội mà Ngài phạt cả hội chúng sao?”
23 Chúa phán với Môi-se rằng, 24 “Bảo hội chúng, ‘Hãy dang xa các trại của Cô-ra, Ða-than, và A-bi-ram.’”
25 Vậy Môi-se đứng dậy và đến gặp Ða-than và A-bi-ram; các vị trưởng lão của I-sơ-ra-ên đi theo ông. 26 Ông nói với hội chúng, “Hãy dang xa các trại của những kẻ gian ác nầy, và chớ đụng đến những gì của họ, kẻo anh chị em cũng bị quét sạch vì mọi tội lỗi của họ chăng.” 27 Vậy người ta dang xa khỏi chỗ ở của Cô-ra, Ða-than, và A-bi-ram. Bấy giờ Ða-than và A-bi-ram đi ra đứng trước cửa trại mình, cùng với vợ, các con, và các trẻ thơ của họ. 28 Môi-se nói, “Nhờ điều nầy anh chị em sẽ biết rằng Chúa đã sai tôi làm những việc đó, chứ chẳng phải tôi tự làm theo ý mình: 29 Nếu những người nầy chết theo công lệ thường tình, hoặc nếu họ chết như bao nhiêu người khác, thì Chúa đã chẳng sai tôi. 30 Nhưng nếu Chúa làm một việc mới, chẳng hạn như đất mở miệng ra nuốt họ, nuốt luôn tất cả những gì thuộc về họ, và họ bị nuốt sống xuống âm phủ, bấy giờ anh chị em sẽ biết rằng những kẻ đó đã khinh bỉ Chúa.”
31 Vừa khi ông nói những lời ấy xong, đất bên dưới họ liền nứt ra. 32 Ðất mở miệng nuốt chửng họ cùng với những gì thuộc về nhà họ, tức mọi người trong gia đình của Cô-ra và tất cả đồ vật của họ. 33 Vậy tất cả những gì thuộc về họ đều bị nuốt sống xuống âm phủ; rồi đất khép lại, và họ bị diệt mất khỏi hội chúng. 34 Tất cả những người I-sơ-ra-ên đứng quanh họ thấy vậy bèn vụt chạy và khóc la, “Hãy coi chừng, kẻo đất cũng nuốt chúng ta.” 35 Kế đó một ngọn lửa từ nơi Chúa lòe ra thiêu sống hai trăm năm mươi người đang dâng hương.
36 [b] Bấy giờ Chúa phán với Môi-se, 37 “Hãy bảo Ê-lê-a-xa con trai Tư Tế A-rôn lấy các lư hương ra khỏi những chỗ đang cháy, rồi phân tán mỏng lửa ra, vì các lư hương đó đã trở nên thánh, 38 tức các lư hương của những kẻ tội lỗi đã hại chết chính mình. Hãy lấy chúng làm thành những tấm đồng dát mỏng, rồi đem bọc bàn thờ, vì chúng đã được dùng để dâng hương trước mặt Chúa, và chúng đã nên thánh. Rồi chúng sẽ thành một dấu cho dân I-sơ-ra-ên.”
39 Vậy Tư Tế Ê-lê-a-xa lấy các lư hương bằng đồng do những người mang đến dâng hương và bị chết cháy làm thành những tấm đồng dát mỏng để bọc bàn thờ. 40 Những tấm đồng đó đã trở thành một dấu để nhắc nhở dân I-sơ-ra-ên rằng không một người ngoài nào, tức một người không thuộc dòng dõi của A-rôn, được đến gần để dâng hương trước mặt Chúa, hầu sẽ không bị chung số phận giống như Cô-ra và đồng bọn của ông, y như Chúa đã phán về ông ấy qua Môi-se.
Hội Chúng Bị Hình Phạt và A-rôn Chuộc Tội cho Dân
41 Tuy nhiên ngày hôm sau cả hội chúng I-sơ-ra-ên nổi loạn chống lại Môi-se và chống lại A-rôn; họ nói, “Các ông đã giết dân của Chúa.” 42 Khi thấy hội chúng hiệp lại chống mình, Môi-se và A-rôn bèn trở về Lều Hội Kiến, và kìa, mây đã ngự xuống bao phủ lều và vinh quang Chúa xuất hiện. 43 Môi-se và A-rôn đến trước Lều Hội Kiến. 44 Bấy giờ có tiếng Chúa phán với Môi-se, 45 “Hãy dang xa khỏi hội chúng nầy, để Ta sẽ tiêu diệt chúng trong giây lát.” Nhưng hai ông sấp mặt xuống đất. 46 Môi-se nói với A-rôn, “Xin anh lấy lư hương, lấy lửa ở bàn thờ bỏ vào, rồi bỏ hương vào lửa, xong hãy mau mau mang lư hương đến với hội chúng và chuộc tội cho họ, vì Chúa đã nổi cơn thịnh nộ, và tai họa đã bắt đầu rồi.” 47 Vậy A-rôn lấy lư hương và làm như lời Môi-se đã bảo. Ông chạy vào giữa đoàn dân đang tụ họp, tức giữa nơi tai họa đã khởi sự hoành hành trong dân. Ông bỏ hương vào và chuộc tội cho dân. 48 Ông đứng giữa kẻ chết và người sống; nhờ thế tai họa đã dừng lại. 49 Những người đã chết vì tai họa là mười bốn ngàn bảy trăm người, không kể những kẻ đã chết về vụ Cô-ra. 50 Khi tai họa đã dừng hẳn, A-rôn trở về với Môi-se ở cửa Lều Hội Kiến.

16 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:
2 And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown:
3 And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?
4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:
5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the Lord will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.
6 This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company;
7 And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the Lord to morrow: and it shall be that the man whom the Lord doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.
8 And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi:
9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?
10 And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?
11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the Lord: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?
12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up:
13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us?
14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.
15 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the Lord, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.
16 And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the Lord, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow:
17 And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the Lord every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer.
18 And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron.
19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the congregation.
20 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.
22 And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?
23 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
24 Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
26 And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of their's, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.
27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.
28 And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the Lord hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.
29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the Lord hath not sent me.
30 But if the Lord make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the Lord.
31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:
32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
35 And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
36 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
37 Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed.
38 The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the Lord, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.
39 And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:
40 To be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the Lord; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the Lord said to him by the hand of Moses.
41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the Lord.
42 And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared.
43 And Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation.
44 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
45 Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them as in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.
46 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the Lord; the plague is begun.
47 And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people.
48 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.
49 Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah.
50 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the plague was stayed.

Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and On
16 Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and On turned against Moses. (Korah was the son of Izhar [26:9–11; 27:3; Ex. 6:21, 24], the son of Kohath, the son of Levi; Dathan and Abiram were brothers [Deut. 11:6; Ps. 106:17], the sons of Eliab; and On was the son of Peleth; Dathan, Abiram, and On were from the tribe of Reuben [Gen. 49:3–4].) 2 These men gathered two hundred fifty other ·Israelite men [L men of the sons/T children of Israel], ·well-known leaders [L men of name/reputation] chosen by the ·community [congregation; assembly], and ·challenged [confronted] Moses. 3 They ·came as a group to speak to [L assembled against] Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far. All the ·people [community; congregation; assembly] are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them [Ex. 19:6]. So why do you put yourselves above all the ·people [assembly; crowd] of the Lord?”
4 When Moses heard this, he ·bowed facedown [L fell on his face]. 5 Then he said to Korah and all his ·followers [community; congregation; assembly]: “Tomorrow morning the Lord will show who belongs to him. He will bring the one who is holy near to him; he will bring to himself the person he chooses. 6 So Korah, you and all your ·followers [community; congregation; assembly] do this: Get some ·pans for burning incense [censers; firepans]. 7 Tomorrow put fire and incense in them and take them before the Lord [Lev. 10:1–2]. He will choose the man who is holy. You ·Levites [L sons/descendants of Levi] have gone too far.”
8 Moses also said to Korah, “Listen, you ·Levites [L sons of Levi]. 9 The God of Israel has ·separated [divided] you from the rest of the ·Israelites [L community/congregation/assembly of Israel]. He brought you near to himself to do the work in the Lord’s ·Holy Tent [Tabernacle] and to stand before all the ·Israelites [community; congregation; assembly] and ·serve [minister to] them [8:14; Ex. 32:29; Lev. 8–9; Deut. 33:8–11]. ·Isn’t that enough [L Is it too little for you]? 10 He has brought you and all your ·fellow [brother] ·Levites [L sons of Levi] near to himself, yet now you ·want to be priests [L seek the priesthood]. 11 You and your ·followers [community; congregation; assembly] have joined together against the Lord. ·Your complaint is not against Aaron [L Who is Aaron that you complain/grumble against him?].”
12 Then Moses called Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come! 13 Is it too little that you have brought us out of a ·fertile land [L land flowing with milk and honey; C Egypt] to this ·desert [wilderness] to kill us? Now you want to ·order us around [lord it over us]. 14 You haven’t brought us into a ·fertile land [L land flowing with milk and honey; Ex. 3:8]; you haven’t given us ·any land [L an inheritance] with fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? No! We will not come!”
15 Then Moses became very angry and said to the Lord, “Don’t accept their ·gifts [tribute]. I have not taken anything from them, not even a donkey, and I have not done wrong to any of them.”
16 Then Moses said to Korah, “You and all your ·followers [community; congregation; assembly] must stand before the Lord tomorrow. And Aaron will stand there with you and them. 17 Each of you must take your ·pan [censer; firepan] and put incense in it; present these two hundred fifty ·pans [censers; firepans] before the Lord. You and Aaron must also present your ·pans [censers; firepans].” 18 So each man got his ·pan [censer; firepan] and put burning incense in it and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Meeting Tent. 19 Korah ·gathered [assembled] all his ·followers [community; congregation; assembly] who were against Moses and Aaron, and they stood at the entrance to the Meeting Tent. Then the glory of the Lord [C representing God’s manifest presence, often in the form of fire and smoke] appeared to everyone.
20 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 21 “·Move away [Separate/Divide yourselves] from these men so I can destroy them quickly.”
22 But Moses and Aaron ·bowed facedown [L fell on their faces] and cried out, “God, you are the God ·over [of] the spirits of all ·people [flesh; 27:16; Gen 2:7]. Please don’t be angry with this whole ·group [community; congregation; assembly]. Only one man has really sinned.”
23 Then the Lord said to Moses, 24 “Tell ·everyone [the community/congregation/assembly] to ·move away from [L go up from around] the ·tents [dwellings] of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”
25 Moses stood and went to Dathan and Abiram; the elders of Israel followed him. 26 Moses warned the people, “·Move away [Turn aside] from the tents of these evil men! Don’t touch anything of theirs, or you will be ·destroyed [swept away] because of their sins.” 27 So they ·moved away [went up] from the ·tents [dwellings] of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram were standing outside their tents with their wives, children, and little babies.
28 Then Moses said, “Now you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these things; it was not ·my idea [L from my heart/mind]. 29 If these men die a normal death—·the way men usually die [if a normal fate comes on them]—then the Lord did not really send me. 30 But if the Lord ·does [L creates] something new, you will know they have ·insulted [despised] the Lord. The ground will open and swallow them. They will be buried alive and will go to ·the place of the dead [L Sheol; C the grave or the underworld], and everything that belongs to them will go with them.”
31 When Moses finished saying these things, the ground under the men split open. 32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and all their families. All Korah’s men and everything they owned went down. 33 They were buried alive, going to ·the place of the dead [L Sheol ;C the grave or the underworld], and everything they owned went with them. Then the earth covered them. They ·died and were gone [perished] from the ·community [assembly; crowd]. 34 ·The people of [L All] Israel around them heard their screams and ran away, saying, “The earth will swallow us, too!”
35 Then a fire came ·down [or out] from the Lord and ·destroyed [consumed] the two hundred fifty men who had presented the incense [Lev. 10:1–2].
36 The Lord said to Moses, 37 “Tell Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, to take all the ·incense pans [censers; firepans] out of the ·fire [flames]. Have him scatter the ·coals [L fire] a long distance away. But the ·incense pans [censers; firepans] are still holy. 38 Take the ·pans [censers; firepans] of these men who sinned and lost their lives, and hammer them into flat sheets that will be used to cover the altar. They are holy, because they were presented to the Lord, and they will be a sign to the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel].”
39 So Eleazar the priest gathered all the bronze ·pans [censers; firepans] that had been brought by the men who were burned up. He had the ·pans [censers; firepans] hammered into flat sheets to put on the altar, 40 as the Lord had commanded him through Moses. These sheets were to remind the Israelites that only ·descendants [L the seed] of Aaron should burn incense before the Lord. Anyone else would die like Korah and his ·followers [community; congregation; assembly].
Aaron Saves the People
41 The next day all the ·Israelites [L community/congregation/assembly of the sons/T children of Israel] ·complained [grumbled] against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have killed the Lord’s people.”
42 When the ·people [community; congregation; assembly] ·gathered [assembled] to ·complain [grumble] against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the Meeting Tent, and the cloud covered it. The glory of the Lord [C representing his manifest presence] appeared. 43 Then Moses and Aaron went in front of the Meeting Tent.
44 The Lord said to Moses, 45 “Move away from ·these people [this community/congregation/assembly] so I can ·destroy [consume] them quickly.” So Moses and Aaron ·bowed facedown [L fell on their faces].
46 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Get your ·pan [censer; firepan], and put fire from the altar and incense in it. Hurry to the people and ·remove their sin [make atonement for them]. The Lord is angry with them; the ·sickness [plague; pestilence] has already started.” 47 So Aaron did as Moses said. He ran to the middle of the ·people [assembly; crowd], where the ·sickness [plague; pestilence] had already started among them. So Aaron offered the incense to ·remove their sin [make atonement for them]. 48 He stood between the dead and the living, and the ·sickness [plague; pestilence] stopped there. 49 But 14,700 people died from that ·sickness [plague; pestilence], in addition to those who died because of Korah. 50 Then Aaron went back to Moses at the entrance to the Meeting Tent. The terrible ·sickness [plague; pestilence] had been stopped.
