Colossians 3:1-17

Put On the New Self

3 ^(A)If then you have been raised with Christ, seek ^(B)the things that are above, where Christ is, ^(C)seated at the right hand of God. ²^(D)Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. ³For ^(E)you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. ⁴When Christ ^(F)who is your^[a] life ^(G)appears, then you also will appear with him ^(H)in glory.

⁵^(I)Put to death therefore ^(J)what is earthly in you:^[b] ^(K)sexual immorality, impurity, ^(L)passion, evil desire, and covetousness, ^(M)which is idolatry. ⁶^(N)On account of these the wrath of God is coming.^[c] ⁷^(O)In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. ⁸But now ^(P)you must put them all away: ^(Q)anger, wrath, malice, ^(R)slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. ⁹^(S)Do not lie to one another, seeing that ^(T)you have put off ^(U)the old self^[d] with its practices ¹⁰and ^(V)have put on ^(W)the new self, ^(X)which is being renewed in knowledge ^(Y)after the image of ^(Z)its creator. ¹¹^(AA)Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,^[e] free; but Christ is ^(AB)all, and in all.

¹²^(AC)Put on then, as ^(AD)God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, ^(AE)compassionate hearts, ^(AF)kindness, ^(AG)humility, meekness, and patience, ¹³^(AH)bearing with one another and, ^(AI)if one has a complaint against another, ^(AJ)forgiving each other; ^(AK)as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. ¹⁴And above all these put on ^(AL)love, which ^(AM)binds everything together in ^(AN)perfect harmony. ¹⁵And let ^(AO)the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called ^(AP)in one body. And ^(AQ)be thankful. ¹⁶Let ^(AR)the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, ^(AS)singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, ^(AT)with thankfulness in your hearts to God. ¹⁷And ^(AU)whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, ^(AV)giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Jeremiah 8:8-9:26

⁸^(A)“How can you say, ‘We are wise,
    and the law of the Lord is with us’?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
    has made it into a lie.
⁹^(B)The wise men shall be put to shame;
    they shall be dismayed ^(C)and taken;
behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord,
    so what wisdom is in them?
¹⁰^(D)Therefore I will give their wives to others
    and their fields to conquerors,
because from the least to the greatest
    everyone ^(E)is greedy for unjust gain;
from prophet to priest,
    everyone deals falsely.
¹¹They have healed ^(F)the wound of my people lightly,
    saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
    when there is no peace.
¹²Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
    No, ^(G)they were not at all ashamed;
    they did not know how to blush.
^(H)Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;
    when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,
says the Lord.
¹³When I would gather them, declares the Lord,
    there are ^(I)no grapes on the vine,
    ^(J)nor figs on the fig tree;
^(K)even the leaves are withered,
    and what I gave them has passed away from them.”^[a]

¹⁴Why do we sit still?
^(L)Gather together; ^(M)let us go into the fortified cities
    and perish there,
for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish
    and has ^(N)given us ^(O)poisoned water to drink,
    because we have sinned against the Lord.
¹⁵^(P)We looked for peace, but no good came;
    for a time of healing, but behold, terror.

¹⁶^(Q)“The snorting of their horses is heard ^(R)from Dan;
    at the sound of the neighing ^(S)of their stallions
    ^(T)the whole land quakes.
They come ^(U)and devour the land and all that fills it,
    the city and those who dwell in it.
¹⁷For behold, I am sending among you ^(V)serpents,
    adders ^(W)that cannot be charmed,
    ^(X)and they shall bite you,”
declares the Lord.

Jeremiah Grieves for His People

¹⁸My joy is gone; grief is upon me;^[b]
    ^(Y)my heart is sick within me.
¹⁹Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people
    from ^(Z)the length and breadth of the land:
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
    ^(AA)Is her King not in her?”
^(AB)“Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images
    and with their foreign idols?”
²⁰“The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
    and we are not saved.”
²¹For the wound of ^(AC)the daughter of my people is my heart wounded;
    ^(AD)I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me.

²²Is there no ^(AE)balm in Gilead?
    Is there no physician there?
Why then has the health of the daughter of my people
    not been restored?
9 ^[c] ^(AF)Oh that my head were waters,
    and my eyes a fountain of tears,
that I might weep day and night
    for the slain of ^(AG)the daughter of my people!
²^[d] Oh that I had in the desert
    a travelers' lodging place,
that I might leave my people
    and go away from them!
For they are all ^(AH)adulterers,
    a company of ^(AI)treacherous men.
³^(AJ)They bend their tongue like a bow;
    falsehood and not truth has grown strong^[e] in the land;
for they proceed from evil to evil,
    ^(AK)and they do not know me, declares the Lord.

⁴^(AL)Let everyone beware of his neighbor,
    and put no trust in any brother,
for every ^(AM)brother is a deceiver,
    and every neighbor ^(AN)goes about as a slanderer.
⁵Everyone deceives his neighbor,
    and no one speaks the truth;
they have taught their tongue to speak lies;
    they weary themselves committing iniquity.
⁶Heaping oppression upon oppression, and deceit upon deceit,
    ^(AO)they refuse to know me, declares the Lord.

⁷Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts:
“Behold, ^(AP)I will refine them and ^(AQ)test them,
    for what else can I do, ^(AR)because of my people?
⁸^(AS)Their tongue is a deadly arrow;
    ^(AT)it speaks deceitfully;
with his mouth ^(AU)each speaks peace to his neighbor,
    but in his heart ^(AV)he plans an ambush for him.
⁹^(AW)Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord,
    and shall I not avenge myself
    on a nation such as this?

¹⁰“I will take up weeping and wailing for the mountains,
    and a lamentation for ^(AX)the pastures of the wilderness,
^(AY)because they are laid waste so that no one passes through,
    and the lowing of cattle is not heard;
^(AZ)both the birds of the air and the beasts
    have fled and are gone.
¹¹^(BA)I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins,
    ^(BB)a lair of jackals,
^(BC)and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation,
    without inhabitant.”

¹²^(BD)Who is the man so wise that he can understand this? To whom has the mouth of the Lord spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land ruined ^(BE)and laid waste like a wilderness, so that no one passes through? ¹³And the Lord says: ^(BF)“Because they have forsaken my law that I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice or walked in accord with it, ¹⁴but ^(BG)have stubbornly followed their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them. ¹⁵Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ^(BH)Behold, I will feed this people with bitter food, and give them ^(BI)poisonous water to drink. ¹⁶^(BJ)I will scatter them among the nations ^(BK)whom neither they nor their fathers have known, and I will ^(BL)send the sword after them, until I have consumed them.”

¹⁷Thus says the Lord of hosts:
^(BM)“Consider, and call for the mourning women to come;
    send for the skillful women to come;
¹⁸let them make haste ^(BN)and raise a wailing over us,
    ^(BO)that our eyes may run down with tears
    and our eyelids flow with water.
¹⁹For a sound of wailing is heard from Zion:
    ^(BP)‘How we are ruined!
    We are utterly shamed,
because we have left the land,
    because they have cast down our dwellings.’”

²⁰Hear, O women, the word of the Lord,
    and let your ear receive the word of his mouth;
teach to your daughters a lament,
    and each to her neighbor a dirge.
²¹For death has come up into our windows;
    it has entered our palaces,
^(BQ)cutting off the children from the streets
    and the young men from the squares.
²²Speak: “Thus declares the Lord,
^(BR)‘The dead bodies of men shall fall
    like dung upon the open field,
^(BS)like sheaves after the reaper,
    and none shall gather them.’”

²³Thus says the Lord: ^(BT)“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, ²⁴but ^(BU)let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. ^(BV)For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

²⁵“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when ^(BW)I will punish all those who are circumcised merely in the flesh— ²⁶^(BX)Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and ^(BY)all who dwell in the desert who cut the corners of their hair, for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are ^(BZ)uncircumcised in heart.”

³²In spite of all this, they ^(A)still sinned;
    ^(B)despite his wonders, they did not believe.
³³So he made ^(C)their days ^(D)vanish like^[a] a breath,^[b]
    and their years in terror.
³⁴When he killed them, they ^(E)sought him;
    they repented and sought God earnestly.
³⁵They remembered that God was their ^(F)rock,
    the Most High God their ^(G)redeemer.
³⁶But they ^(H)flattered him with their mouths;
    they ^(I)lied to him with their tongues.
³⁷Their ^(J)heart was not ^(K)steadfast toward him;
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
³⁸Yet he, being ^(L)compassionate,
    ^(M)atoned for their iniquity
    and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often
    and did not stir up all his wrath.
³⁹He ^(N)remembered that they were but ^(O)flesh,
    ^(P)a wind that passes and comes not again.
⁴⁰How often they ^(Q)rebelled against him in the wilderness
    and ^(R)grieved him in ^(S)the desert!

    and provoked ^(U)the Holy One of Israel.

    or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,

⁴⁴He ^(AA)turned their rivers to blood,
    so that they could not drink of their streams.
⁴⁵He sent among them swarms of ^(AB)flies, which devoured them,
    and ^(AC)frogs, which destroyed them.
⁴⁶He gave their crops to ^(AD)the destroying locust
    and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
⁴⁷He destroyed their vines with ^(AE)hail
    and their sycamores with frost.
⁴⁸He gave over their ^(AF)cattle to the hail
    and their flocks to thunderbolts.
⁴⁹He let loose on them his burning anger,
    wrath, indignation, and distress,
    a company of ^(AG)destroying angels.
⁵⁰He made a path for his anger;
    he did not spare them from death,
    but gave their lives over to the plague.
⁵¹He struck down every ^(AH)firstborn in Egypt,
    the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of ^(AI)Ham.
⁵²Then he led out his people ^(AJ)like sheep
    and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
⁵³^(AK)He led them in safety, so that they ^(AL)were not afraid,
    but ^(AM)the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
⁵⁴And he brought them to his ^(AN)holy land,
    ^(AO)to the mountain which his right hand had ^(AP)won.
⁵⁵He ^(AQ)drove out nations before them;
    he ^(AR)apportioned them for a possession
    and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
