Thankfulness for Spiritual Attainments

1 (A)Paul, (B)an apostle of Jesus Christ [a](C)by the will of God, and (D)Timothy [b]our brother,

2 To the [c](E)saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: (F)Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

3 (G)We give thanks to God, (H)the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 (I)since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the (J)love which you have [d]for (K)all the [e]saints; 5 because of the (L)hope (M)laid up for you in [f]heaven, of which you previously (N)heard in the word of truth, [g]the gospel 6 which has come to you, just as [h](O)in all the world also it is constantly bearing (P)fruit and [i]increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you (Q)heard of it and [j]understood the grace of God in truth; 7 just as you learned it from (R)Epaphras, our (S)beloved fellow bond-servant, who is a faithful servant of Christ on our behalf, 8 and he also informed us of your (T)love in the Spirit.

9 For this reason also, (U)since the day we heard of it, (V)we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the [k](W)knowledge of His will in all spiritual (X)wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you will (Y)walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, [l](Z)to please Him in all respects, (AA)bearing fruit in every good work and [m]increasing in the [n]knowledge of God; 11 (AB)strengthened with all power, according to [o]His glorious might, [p]for the attaining of all steadfastness and [q]patience; (AC)joyously 12 giving thanks to (AD)the Father, who has qualified us [r]to share in (AE)the inheritance of the [s]saints in (AF)Light.

The Incomparable Christ

13 [t]For He rescued us from the [u](AG)domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of [v](AH)His beloved Son, 14 (AI)in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

15 [w]He is the (AJ)image of the (AK)invisible God, the (AL)firstborn of all creation. 16 For [x](AM)by Him all things were created, (AN)both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether (AO)thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—(AP)all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He [y](AQ)is before all things, and in Him all things [z]hold together. 18 He is also (AR)head of (AS)the body, the church; and He is (AT)the beginning, (AU)the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. 19 For [aa]it was (AV)the Father’s good pleasure for all (AW)the [ab]fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to (AX)reconcile all things to Himself, having made (AY)peace through (AZ)the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, (BA)whether things on earth or things in [ac]heaven.

21 And although you were (BB)formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now (BC)reconciled you in His fleshly (BD)body through death, in order to (BE)present you before Him (BF)holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in [ad]the faith firmly (BG)established and steadfast, and not moved away from the (BH)hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed (BI)in all creation under heaven, (BJ)and of which I, Paul, [ae]was made a [af](BK)minister.

24 (BL)Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh (BM)I [ag]do my share on behalf of (BN)His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking [ah]in Christ’s afflictions. 25 (BO)Of this church I [ai]was made a minister according to the (BP)stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might [aj]fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, 26 that is, (BQ)the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His [ak]saints, 27 to whom (BR)God willed to make known what is (BS)the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is (BT)Christ in you, the (BU)hope of glory. 28 We proclaim Him, (BV)admonishing every man and teaching every man [al]with all (BW)wisdom, so that we may (BX)present every man [am](BY)complete in Christ. 29 For this purpose also I (BZ)labor, (CA)striving (CB)according to His [an]power, which [ao]mightily works within me.

1 Paul, an apostle(A) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,(B) and Timothy(C) our brother,

2 To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters[a] in Christ:

Grace(D) and peace to you from God our Father.[b](E)

Thanksgiving and Prayer

3 We always thank God,(F) the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love(G) you have for all God’s people(H)— 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope(I) stored up for you in heaven(J) and about which you have already heard in the true message(K) of the gospel 6 that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit(L) and growing throughout the whole world(M)—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. 7 You learned it from Epaphras,(N) our dear fellow servant,[c] who is a faithful minister(O) of Christ on our[d] behalf, 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.(P)

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you,(Q) we have not stopped praying for you.(R) We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will(S) through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,[e](T) 10 so that you may live a life worthy(U) of the Lord and please him(V) in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,(W) 11 being strengthened with all power(X) according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience,(Y) 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father,(Z) who has qualified you[f] to share in the inheritance(AA) of his holy people in the kingdom of light.(AB) 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness(AC) and brought us into the kingdom(AD) of the Son he loves,(AE) 14 in whom we have redemption,(AF) the forgiveness of sins.(AG)

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image(AH) of the invisible God,(AI) the firstborn(AJ) over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created:(AK) things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities;(AL) all things have been created through him and for him.(AM) 17 He is before all things,(AN) and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head(AO) of the body, the church;(AP) he is the beginning and the firstborn(AQ) from among the dead,(AR) so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased(AS) to have all his fullness(AT) dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile(AU) to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven,(AV) by making peace(AW) through his blood,(AX) shed on the cross.

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies(AY) in your minds(AZ) because of[g] your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled(BA) you by Christ’s physical body(BB) through death to present you(BC) holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation(BD)— 23 if you continue(BE) in your faith, established(BF) and firm, and do not move from the hope(BG) held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven,(BH) and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.(BI)

Paul’s Labor for the Church

24 Now I rejoice(BJ) in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions,(BK) for the sake of his body, which is the church.(BL) 25 I have become its servant(BM) by the commission God gave me(BN) to present to you the word of God(BO) in its fullness— 26 the mystery(BP) that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known(BQ) among the Gentiles the glorious riches(BR) of this mystery, which is Christ in you,(BS) the hope of glory.

28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing(BT) and teaching everyone with all wisdom,(BU) so that we may present everyone fully mature(BV) in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously(BW) contend(BX) with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.(BY)

Acción de gracias e intercesión

3 Damos gracias a Dios, el Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, orando siempre por ustedes; 4 porque hemos oído de su fe en Cristo Jesús y del amor que tienen por todos los santos, 5 a causa de la esperanza reservada para ustedes en los cielos, de la cual han oído en la palabra de verdad del evangelio 6 que les ha llegado. Y así como está llevando fruto y creciendo en todo el mundo, lo mismo sucede también entre ustedes desde el día en que oyeron y comprendieron de veras la gracia de Dios 7 tal como aprendieron de Epafras, nuestro consiervo amado, quien es fiel ministro de Cristo a favor de ustedes. 8 Él también nos ha informado del amor de ustedes en el Espíritu.

9 Por esta razón también nosotros, desde el día en que lo oímos, no cesamos de orar por ustedes y de rogar que sean llenos del conocimiento de su voluntad en toda sabiduría y plena comprensión espiritual, 10 para que anden como es digno del Señor a fin de agradarle en todo; de manera que produzcan fruto en toda buena obra y que crezcan en el conocimiento de Dios; 11 y que sean fortalecidos con todo poder, conforme a su gloriosa potencia, para toda perseverancia y paciencia. 12 Con gozo damos gracias al Padre que les[b] hizo aptos para participar de la herencia de los santos en luz. 13 Él nos ha librado de la autoridad de las tinieblas y nos ha trasladado al reino de su Hijo amado, 14 en quien tenemos redención[c], el perdón de los pecados.

La preeminencia de Cristo

15 Él es la imagen del Dios invisible; el primogénito de toda la creación 16 porque en él fueron creadas todas las cosas que están en los cielos y en la tierra, visibles e invisibles, sean tronos, dominios, principados o autoridades. Todo fue creado por medio de él y para él. 17 Él antecede a todas las cosas, y en él todas las cosas subsisten. 18 Y, además, él es la cabeza del cuerpo que es la iglesia. Él es el principio, el primogénito de entre los muertos para que en todo él sea preeminente; 19 por cuanto agradó al Padre que en él habitara toda plenitud 20 y, por medio de él, reconciliar consigo mismo todas las cosas, tanto sobre la tierra como en los cielos, habiendo hecho la paz mediante la sangre de su cruz.

21 A ustedes también, aunque en otro tiempo estaban apartados y eran enemigos por tener la mente ocupada en las malas obras, ahora los ha reconciliado 22 en su cuerpo físico por medio de la muerte para presentarlos santos, sin mancha e irreprensibles delante de él; 23 por cuanto permanecen fundados y firmes en la fe, sin ser removidos de la esperanza del evangelio que han oído, el cual ha sido predicado en toda la creación debajo del cielo.

Pablo, ministro del evangelio

De este evangelio yo, Pablo, llegué a ser ministro. 24 Ahora me gozo en lo que padezco por ustedes, y completo en mi propia carne lo que falta de las tribulaciones de Cristo a favor de su cuerpo, que es la iglesia. 25 De ella llegué a ser ministro según el oficio divino que Dios me dio a favor de ustedes, para dar pleno cumplimiento a la palabra de Dios: 26 el misterio de Dios que había estado oculto desde los siglos y las generaciones, pero que ahora ha sido revelado a sus santos. 27 A estos, Dios ha querido dar a conocer cuáles son las riquezas de la gloria de este misterio entre las naciones, el cual es: Cristo en ustedes, la esperanza de gloria. 28 A él anunciamos nosotros, amonestando a todo hombre y enseñando a todo hombre con toda sabiduría, a fin de que presentemos a todo hombre perfecto en Cristo Jesús. 29 Por esto mismo yo trabajo, esforzándome según su potencia que obra poderosamente en mí.

Salutation

1 Paul, apôtre de Jésus-Christ par la volonté de Dieu, et le frère Timothée, saluent 2 ceux qui, à Colosses, font partie du peuple saint par leur union avec Christ et qui sont nos fidèles frères et sœurs en lui.

Que la grâce et la paix vous soient accordées par Dieu notre Père[a].

Prière de reconnaissance

3 Nous exprimons constamment à Dieu, le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, notre reconnaissance à votre sujet dans nos prières pour vous. 4 En effet, nous avons entendu parler de votre foi en Jésus-Christ et de votre amour pour tous les membres du peuple saint. 5 Cette foi et cet amour se fondent sur ce qui fait votre espérance et que Dieu vous réserve dans les cieux. Cette espérance, vous l’avez connue par la prédication de la vérité, cet Evangile 6 qui est parvenu jusqu’à vous, comme il est aussi présent dans le monde entier où il porte du fruit et va de progrès en progrès – ce qui est également le cas parmi vous, depuis le jour où vous avez reçu et reconnu la grâce de Dieu dans toute sa vérité.

7 C’est Epaphras, notre cher collaborateur, qui vous en a instruits. Il est un fidèle serviteur de Christ auprès de vous[b] 8 et il nous a appris quel amour l’Esprit vous inspire.

Prière de Paul et hymne à Jésus-Christ

9 Aussi, depuis le jour où nous avons entendu parler de vous, nous aussi, nous ne cessons de prier Dieu pour vous. Nous lui demandons qu’il vous fasse connaître pleinement sa volonté, en vous donnant, par le Saint-Esprit, une entière sagesse et un parfait discernement. 10 Ainsi vous pourrez avoir une conduite digne du Seigneur et qui lui plaise à tous égards. Car vous porterez comme fruit toutes sortes d’œuvres bonnes et vous ferez des progrès dans la connaissance de Dieu. 11 Dieu vous fortifiera pleinement à la mesure de sa puissance glorieuse, pour que vous puissiez tout supporter et persévérer jusqu’au bout – et cela avec joie[c]. 12 Vous exprimerez votre reconnaissance au Père qui vous a rendus capables d’avoir part à l’héritage qu’il réserve dans la lumière aux membres de son peuple saint[d]. Car :

13 Il nous a arrachés
au pouvoir des ténèbres
et nous a fait passer
dans le royaume
de son Fils bien-aimé.
14 Etant unis à lui,
nous sommes délivrés,
car nous avons reçu
le pardon des péchés.

15 Ce Fils,
il est l’image
du Dieu que nul ne voit,
il est le Premier-né
de toute création.
16 Car c’est en lui
qu’ont été créées toutes choses
dans les cieux comme sur la terre,
les visibles, les invisibles,
les Trônes et les Seigneuries,
les Autorités, les Puissances.
C’est par lui et pour lui
que Dieu a tout créé.

17 Il est lui-même
bien avant toutes choses
et tout subsiste en lui.
18 Il est lui-même
la tête de son corps
qui est l’Eglise[e].

Ce Fils
est le commencement,
le Premier-né
de tous ceux qui sont morts,
afin qu’en toutes choses
il ait le premier rang.
19 Car c’est en lui
que Dieu a désiré
que toute plénitude
ait sa demeure.
20 Et c’est par lui
qu’il a voulu
réconcilier avec lui-même
l’univers tout entier :
ce qui est sur la terre
et ce qui est au ciel,
en instaurant la paix
par le sang que son Fils
a versé sur la croix.

21 Or vous, autrefois, vous étiez exclus de la présence de Dieu, vous étiez ses ennemis à cause de vos pensées qui vous amenaient à faire des œuvres mauvaises ; 22 mais maintenant, Dieu vous a réconciliés avec lui par le sacrifice de son Fils qui a livré à la mort son corps humain, pour vous faire paraître saints, irréprochables et sans faute devant lui. 23 Mais il vous faut, bien sûr, demeurer dans la foi, fermement établis sur ce fondement sans vous laisser écarter de l’espérance qu’annonce l’Evangile. Cet Evangile, vous l’avez entendu, il a été proclamé parmi toutes les créatures sous le ciel, et moi, Paul, j’en suis devenu le serviteur.

Christ, la vraie sagesse

Le combat de l’apôtre pour l’Eglise

24 Maintenant, je me réjouis des souffrances que j’endure pour vous. Car, en ma personne, je complète, pour le bien de son corps – qui est l’Eglise – ce qui manque aux persécutions dirigées contre Christ[f]. 25 C’est de cette Eglise que je suis devenu le serviteur, selon la responsabilité que Dieu m’a confiée à votre égard. Il m’a chargé d’annoncer sa Parole dans toute sa plénitude 26 en vous faisant connaître le secret de son plan tenu caché depuis toujours, de génération en génération, mais qui s’accomplit de façon manifeste pour les membres de son peuple saint. 27 Car Dieu a voulu leur faire connaître quelle est la glorieuse richesse que renferme le secret de son plan pour les non-Juifs. Et voici ce secret : Christ en vous[g], garantie de votre espérance de la gloire à venir.

28 C’est lui, Christ, que nous, nous annonçons, en avertissant et en enseignant tout être humain, en toute sagesse, afin de faire paraître devant Dieu tout homme parvenu à l’état d’adulte dans son union avec Christ. 29 Voilà pourquoi je travaille et je combats par la force de Christ qui agit puissamment en moi.
