You Are Built Up in Christ

For I want you to know how great a (A)struggle I have in your behalf and for those who are at (B)Laodicea, and for all those who have not [a]personally seen my face, that their (C)hearts may be encouraged, having been (D)knit together in love, and that they would attain to all (E)the wealth [b]that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a (F)true knowledge of (G)God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all (H)the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (I)I say this so that no one will deceive you with (J)persuasive arguments. For even though I am (K)absent in body, I am nevertheless with you in spirit, rejoicing [c]to see [d]your (L)orderly manner and the (M)stability of your faith in Christ.

Therefore, as you have received (N)Christ Jesus the Lord, so [e](O)walk in Him, having been firmly (P)rooted and now being (Q)built up in Him and (R)established [f]in [g]your faith, just as you (S)were instructed, and overflowing [h]with gratitude.

(T)See to it that there is no one who takes you captive through (U)philosophy and empty deception in accordance with human tradition, in accordance with the (V)elementary principles of the world, [i]rather than in accordance with Christ. For in Him all the (W)fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been (X)made [j]complete, and (Y)He is the head [k]over every (Z)ruler and authority; 11 and in Him (AA)you were also circumcised with a circumcision performed without hands, in the removal of (AB)the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been (AC)buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also (AD)raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who (AE)raised Him from the dead. 13 And [l]when you were (AF)dead [m]in your wrongdoings and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He (AG)made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our wrongdoings, 14 having canceled (AH)the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and (AI)He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 When He had [n](AJ)disarmed the (AK)rulers and authorities, He (AL)made a public display of them, having (AM)triumphed over them through [o]Him.

16 Therefore, no one is to [p](AN)act as your judge in regard to (AO)food and (AP)drink, or in respect to a (AQ)festival or a (AR)new moon, or a (AS)Sabbath [q]day— 17 things which are only a (AT)shadow of what is to come; but the [r]substance [s]belongs to Christ. 18 Take care that no one keeps [t](AU)defrauding you of your prize by (AV)delighting in humility and the worship of the angels, [u]taking his stand on visions he has seen, [v](AW)inflated without cause by his (AX)fleshly mind, 19 and not holding firmly to (AY)the head, from whom (AZ)the entire body, being supplied and held together by the joints and [w]ligaments, grows with a growth [x]which is from God.

20 (BA)If you have died with Christ [y]to the (BB)elementary principles of the world, (BC)why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to (BD)decrees, such as, 21 “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!” 22 (which all refer (BE)to things destined to perish [z]with use)—in accordance with the (BF)commandments and teachings of man? 23 These are matters which do have the [aa]appearance of wisdom in [ab](BG)self-made religion and humility and (BH)severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against (BI)fleshly indulgence.

Put On the New Self

Therefore, if you have been (BJ)raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, (BK)seated at the right hand of God. [ac](BL)Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have (BM)died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, (BN)who is our life, is revealed, (BO)then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

(BP)Therefore, [ad]treat (BQ)the parts of your earthly body as dead to (BR)sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which [ae]amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that (BS)the wrath of God is coming [af]upon the [ag]sons of disobedience, and (BT)in them you also once walked, when you were living [ah]in them. But now you also, (BU)rid yourselves of all of them: (BV)anger, wrath, malice, slander, and (BW)obscene speech from your mouth. [ai](BX)Do not lie to one another, since you (BY)stripped off the old [aj]self with its evil practices, 10 and have (BZ)put on the new self, which is being [ak](CA)renewed to a true knowledge (CB)according to the image of the One who (CC)created it— 11 a renewal in which (CD)there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, (CE)circumcised and uncircumcised, [al](CF)barbarian, [am]Scythian, (CG)slave, and free, but (CH)Christ is all, and in all.

12 So, as those who have been (CI)chosen of God, holy and beloved, (CJ)put on a (CK)heart of compassion, kindness, (CL)humility, gentleness, and [an](CM)patience; 13 (CN)bearing with one another, and (CO)forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; (CP)just as the Lord forgave you, so must you do also. 14 In addition to all these things put on love, which is [ao](CQ)the perfect bond of (CR)unity. 15 Let (CS)the peace of Christ, to which you were [ap]indeed called in (CT)one body, [aq]rule in your hearts; and [ar]be thankful. 16 Let (CU)the word of [as]Christ richly dwell within you, [at]with all wisdom (CV)teaching and admonishing [au]one another (CW)with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, (CX)singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 (CY)Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, (CZ)giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Family Relations

18 (DA)Wives, (DB)be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 (DC)Husbands, love your wives and do not become bitter against them. 20 (DD)Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing [av]to the Lord. 21 (DE)Fathers, do not [aw]antagonize your children, so that they will not become discouraged.

22 [ax](DF)Slaves, obey those who are your [ay]human masters in everything, (DG)not with [az]eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, do your work [ba]heartily, (DH)as for the Lord and not for people, 24 (DI)knowing that it is from the Lord that you will receive the reward [bb]of (DJ)the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you (DK)serve. 25 For (DL)the one who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and [bc](DM)that without partiality.

Masters, grant your slaves justice and fairness, (DN)knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.

(DO)Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving; praying at the same time (DP)for us as well, that God will open up to us a (DQ)door for (DR)the word, so that we may proclaim (DS)the mystery of Christ, for which I have also (DT)been imprisoned; that I may make it clear (DU)in the way that I ought to proclaim it.

[bd](DV)Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward (DW)outsiders, [be](DX)making the most of the opportunity. (DY)Your speech must always be [bf]with grace, as though seasoned with (DZ)salt, so that you will know how you should (EA)respond to each person.

(EB)As to all my affairs, (EC)Tychicus, our (ED)beloved brother and faithful servant and fellow bond-servant in the Lord, will bring you information. (EE)For I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know about our circumstances and that he may (EF)encourage your hearts; [bg]and with him is (EG)Onesimus, our faithful and (EH)beloved brother, (EI)who is one of your own. They will inform you about the whole situation here.

10 (EJ)Aristarchus, my (EK)fellow prisoner, sends you his greetings; and also (EL)Barnabas’ cousin Mark (about whom you received [bh]instructions; (EM)if he comes to you, welcome him); 11 and also Jesus who is called Justus; these are the only (EN)fellow workers for the kingdom of God (EO)who are from the circumcision, and they have proved to be an encouragement to me. 12 (EP)Epaphras, (EQ)who is one of your own, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings, always (ER)striving earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may [bi]stand [bj](ES)mature and [bk]fully assured in all the will of God. 13 For I testify for him that he has [bl]a deep concern for you and for those who are in (ET)Laodicea and Hierapolis. 14 (EU)Luke, the beloved physician, sends you his greetings, and (EV)Demas does also. 15 Greet the brothers and sisters who are in (EW)Laodicea and also [bm]Nympha and (EX)the church that is in [bn]her house. 16 (EY)When [bo]this letter is read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and you, for your part, (EZ)read [bp]my letter that is coming from (FA)Laodicea. 17 Tell (FB)Archippus, “See to the (FC)ministry which you have received in the Lord, so that you may [bq]fulfill it.”

18 [br]I, Paul, (FD)write this greeting with my own hand. (FE)Remember my [bs](FF)imprisonment. (FG)Grace be with you.

You Are Built Up in Christ

For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those [believers] at [a]Laodicea, and for all who [like yourselves] have never seen me face to face. [For my hope is] that their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in [unselfish] [b]love, so that they may have all the riches that come from the full assurance of understanding [the joy of salvation], resulting in a true [and more intimate] knowledge of the [c]mystery of God, that is, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge [regarding the word and purposes of God]. I say this so that no one will deceive you with persuasive [but thoroughly deceptive] arguments. For even though I am absent [from you] in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, [d]delighted to see your good discipline [as you stand shoulder to shoulder and form a solid front] and to see the stability of your faith in Christ [your steadfast reliance on Him and your unwavering confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness].

Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in [union with] Him [reflecting His character in the things you do and say—living lives that lead others away from sin], having been deeply rooted [in Him] and now being continually built up in Him and [becoming increasingly more] established [e]in your faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing in it with gratitude.

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception [pseudo-intellectual babble], according to the tradition [and musings] of mere men, following the [f]elementary principles of this world, rather than following [the truth—the teachings of] Christ. For in Him all the fullness of Deity (the Godhead) dwells in bodily form [completely expressing the divine essence of God]. 10 And in Him you have been made complete [achieving spiritual stature through Christ], and He is the head over all rule and authority [of every angelic and earthly power]. 11 In Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, but by the [spiritual] circumcision of Christ in the stripping off of the body of the flesh [the sinful carnal nature], 12 having been buried with Him in baptism and raised with Him [to a new life] through [your] faith in the working of God, [as displayed] when He raised Christ from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh (worldliness, manner of life), God made you alive together with Christ, having [freely] forgiven us all our sins, 14 having canceled out the [g]certificate of debt consisting of [h]legal demands [which were in force] against us and which were hostile to us. And this certificate He has set aside and completely removed by nailing it to the cross. 15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities [those supernatural forces of evil operating against us], He made a public example of them [exhibiting them as captives in His triumphal procession], having triumphed over them through [i]the cross.

16 Therefore let no one judge you in regard to food and drink or in regard to [the observance of] a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day. 17 Such things are only a shadow of what is to come and they have only symbolic value; but the substance [the reality of what is foreshadowed] belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one defraud you of your prize [your freedom in Christ and your salvation] by insisting on mock humility and the worship of angels, going into detail about visions [he claims] he has seen [to justify his authority], puffed up [in conceit] by his unspiritual mind, 19 and not holding fast to the head [of the body, Jesus Christ], from whom the entire body, supplied and knit together by its joints and ligaments, grows with the growth [that can come only] from God.

20 If you have died with Christ to the [j]elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were still living in the world, do you submit to rules and regulations, such as, 21 “Do not handle [this], do not taste [that], do not [even] touch!”? 22 (these things all perish with use)—in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men.(A) 23 These practices indeed have the appearance [that popularly passes as that] of wisdom in self-made religion and mock humility and severe treatment of the body (asceticism), but are of no value against sinful indulgence [because they do not honor God].

Put On the New Self

Therefore if you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, sharing in His resurrection from the dead], keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.(B) Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above [the heavenly things], not on things that are on the earth [which have only temporal value]. For you died [to this world], and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, [k]appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

So put to death and deprive of power the evil longings of your earthly body [with its sensual, self-centered instincts] immorality, impurity, sinful passion, evil desire, and greed, which is [a kind of] idolatry [because it replaces your devotion to God]. Because of these [sinful] things the [divine] wrath of God is coming [l]on the sons of disobedience [those who fail to listen and who routinely and obstinately disregard God’s precepts], and in these [sinful things] you also once walked, when you were habitually living in them [without the knowledge of Christ]. But now rid yourselves [completely] of all these things: anger, rage, malice, slander, and obscene (abusive, filthy, vulgar) language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new [spiritual] self who is being continually renewed in true knowledge in the image of Him who created the new self—(C) 11 a renewal in which there is no [distinction between] Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, [nor between nations whether] [m]barbarian or [n]Scythian, [nor in status whether] slave or free, but Christ is all, and in all [so believers are equal in Christ, without distinction].

12 So, as God’s own chosen people, who are holy [set apart, sanctified for His purpose] and well-beloved [by God Himself], put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience [which has the power to endure whatever injustice or unpleasantness comes, with good temper]; 13 bearing graciously with one another, and willingly forgiving each other if one has a cause for complaint against another; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so should you forgive. 14 Beyond all these things put on and wrap yourselves in [unselfish] love, which is the perfect bond of unity [for everything is bound together in agreement when each one seeks the best for others]. 15 Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts [deciding and settling questions that arise]. To this peace indeed you were called as members in one body [of believers]. And be thankful [to God always]. 16 Let the [spoken] word of Christ have its home within you [dwelling in your heart and mind—permeating every aspect of your being] as you teach [spiritual things] and admonish and train one another with all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Family Relations

18 Wives, be [o]subject to your husbands [out of respect for their position as protector, and their accountability to God], as is proper and [p]fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives [with an affectionate, sympathetic, selfless love that always seeks the best for them] and do not be embittered or resentful toward them [because of the responsibilities of marriage]. 20 Children, obey your parents [as God’s representatives] in all things, for this [attitude of respect and obedience] is well-pleasing [q]to the Lord [and will bring you God’s promised blessings]. 21 Fathers, do not provoke or irritate or exasperate your children [with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by favoritism or indifference; treat them tenderly with lovingkindness], so they will not lose heart and become discouraged or unmotivated [with their spirits broken].

22 Servants, in everything obey those who are your masters on earth, not only with external service, as those who merely please people, but with sincerity of heart because of your fear of the Lord. 23 Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [greatest] reward. It is the Lord Christ whom you [actually] serve. 25 For he who does wrong will be punished for his wrongdoing, and [with God] there is no partiality [no special treatment based on a person’s position in life].

Fellow Workers

Masters, [on your part] deal with your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.(D)

Be persistent and devoted to prayer, being alert and focused in your prayer life with an attitude of thanksgiving. At the same time pray for us, too, that God will open a door [of opportunity] to us for the word, to proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I have been imprisoned; that I may make it clear [and speak boldly and unfold the mystery] in the way I should.

Conduct yourself with wisdom in your interactions with outsiders (non-believers), make the most of each opportunity [treating it as something precious]. Let your speech at all times be gracious and pleasant, seasoned with salt, so that you will know how to answer each one [who questions you].

As to all my affairs, [r]Tychicus, who is a much-loved brother and faithful assistant and fellow bond-servant in the Lord, will give you all the information.(E) I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are doing and that he may encourage your hearts; and with him is [s]Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will let you know everything about the situation here [in Rome].

10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, wishes to be remembered to you; as does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions; if he comes to you, welcome him); 11 and from Jesus, who is called Justus. These are the only fellow workers for the kingdom of God who are from the circumcision (Jewish Christians), and they have proved to be an encouragement and a comfort to me. 12 Epaphras, who is one of you and a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. [He is] always striving for you in his prayers, praying with genuine concern, [pleading] that you may [as people of character and courage] stand firm, [spiritually mature] and fully assured in all the will of God. 13 For I testify for him that he has worked strenuously for you and for the believers in Laodicea and those in Hierapolis. 14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas greet you. 15 Give my greetings to the [t]brothers and sisters at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church that meets in her house. 16 When this letter has been read among you, see that it is read in the church of the Laodiceans; and also that you in turn read [u]my letter [that is coming to you] from Laodicea. 17 And say to Archippus, “See to it that you fulfill [carefully the duties of] the ministry which you have received in the Lord.”

18 I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains. May grace (God’s unmerited favor and blessing) be with you.

For I want you to know (A)how great a (B)struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that (C)their hearts may be encouraged, being (D)knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of (E)God's mystery, which is Christ, (F)in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this in order (G)that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. For (H)though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your (I)good order and (J)the firmness of your faith in Christ.

Alive in Christ

(K)Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, (L)rooted and (M)built up in him and (N)established in the faith, just (O)as you were taught, abounding (P)in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive by (Q)philosophy and (R)empty deceit, according to (S)human tradition, according to the (T)elemental spirits[a] of the world, and not according to Christ. For (U)in him the whole fullness of deity dwells (V)bodily, 10 and (W)you have been filled in him, who is (X)the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also (Y)you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by (Z)putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 (AA)having been buried with him in baptism, in which (AB)you were also raised with him through faith in (AC)the powerful working of God, (AD)who raised him from the dead. 13 (AE)And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God (AF)made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by (AG)canceling (AH)the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 (AI)He disarmed the rulers and authorities[b] and (AJ)put them to open shame, by (AK)triumphing over them in him.[c]

Let No One Disqualify You

16 Therefore let no one (AL)pass judgment on you (AM)in questions of food and drink, or with regard to (AN)a festival or (AO)a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 (AP)These are a shadow of the things to come, but (AQ)the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one (AR)disqualify you, (AS)insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, (AT)going on in detail about visions,[d] (AU)puffed up without reason by (AV)his sensuous mind, 19 and (AW)not (AX)holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

20 If with Christ (AY)you died to the (AZ)elemental spirits of the world, (BA)why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 (BB)“Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 ((BC)referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to (BD)human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in (BE)promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are (BF)of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

Put On the New Self

(BG)If then you have been raised with Christ, seek (BH)the things that are above, where Christ is, (BI)seated at the right hand of God. (BJ)Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For (BK)you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ (BL)who is your[e] life (BM)appears, then you also will appear with him (BN)in glory.

(BO)Put to death therefore (BP)what is earthly in you:[f] (BQ)sexual immorality, impurity, (BR)passion, evil desire, and covetousness, (BS)which is idolatry. (BT)On account of these the wrath of God is coming.[g] (BU)In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now (BV)you must put them all away: (BW)anger, wrath, malice, (BX)slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. (BY)Do not lie to one another, seeing that (BZ)you have put off (CA)the old self[h] with its practices 10 and (CB)have put on (CC)the new self, (CD)which is being renewed in knowledge (CE)after the image of (CF)its creator. 11 (CG)Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,[i] free; but Christ is (CH)all, and in all.

12 (CI)Put on then, as (CJ)God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, (CK)compassionate hearts, (CL)kindness, (CM)humility, meekness, and patience, 13 (CN)bearing with one another and, (CO)if one has a complaint against another, (CP)forgiving each other; (CQ)as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on (CR)love, which (CS)binds everything together in (CT)perfect harmony. 15 And let (CU)the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called (CV)in one body. And (CW)be thankful. 16 Let (CX)the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, (CY)singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, (CZ)with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And (DA)whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, (DB)giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Rules for Christian Households

18 (DC)Wives, submit to your husbands, as (DD)is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and (DE)do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents (DF)in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 22 Bondservants, obey (DG)in everything those who are your earthly masters,[j] not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 (DH)Whatever you do, work heartily, (DI)as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord (DJ)you will receive the inheritance as your reward. (DK)You are serving the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

Masters, treat your bondservants[k] justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.

Further Instructions

(DL)Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it (DM)with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may (DN)open to us a door for the word, (DO)to declare the mystery of Christ, (DP)on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.

(DQ)Walk in wisdom toward (DR)outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always (DS)be gracious, (DT)seasoned with salt, (DU)so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Final Greetings

Tychicus will tell you (DV)all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant[l] in the Lord. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, and with him (DW)Onesimus, our faithful and (DX)beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you of everything that has taken place here.

10 (DY)Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark (DZ)the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions—(EA)if he comes to you, welcome him), 11 and Jesus who is called (EB)Justus. (EC)These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and (ED)they have been a comfort to me. 12 (EE)Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always (EF)struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand (EG)mature and fully assured in all the will of God. 13 For I bear him witness that he has worked hard for you and for those in Laodicea and in Hierapolis. 14 (EH)Luke the beloved physician greets you, as does (EI)Demas. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers[m] at Laodicea, and to Nympha and (EJ)the church in her house. 16 And when (EK)this letter has been read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea. 17 And say to (EL)Archippus, “See that you fulfill (EM)the ministry that you have received in the Lord.”

18 I, Paul, (EN)write this greeting with my own hand. (EO)Remember (EP)my chains. (EQ)Grace be with you.

For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;

That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;

22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;

23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:

That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord:

Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts;

With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.

10 Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)

11 And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only are my fellowworkers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me.

12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

13 For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis.

14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.

15 Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house.

16 And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.

17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.

18 The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.
