Freedom From Human Rules

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you(A) by what you eat or drink,(B) or with regard to a religious festival,(C) a New Moon celebration(D) or a Sabbath day.(E) 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come;(F) the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility(G) and the worship of angels disqualify you.(H) Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head,(I) from whom the whole body,(J) supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.(K)

20 Since you died with Christ(L) to the elemental spiritual forces of this world,(M) why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:(N) 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish(O) with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.(P) 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility(Q) and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ,(R) set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.(S) Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.(T) For you died,(U) and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your[a] life,(V) appears,(W) then you also will appear with him in glory.(X)

Put to death,(Y) therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:(Z) sexual immorality,(AA) impurity, lust, evil desires and greed,(AB) which is idolatry.(AC) Because of these, the wrath of God(AD) is coming.[b] You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.(AE) But now you must also rid yourselves(AF) of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander,(AG) and filthy language from your lips.(AH) Do not lie to each other,(AI) since you have taken off your old self(AJ) with its practices 10 and have put on the new self,(AK) which is being renewed(AL) in knowledge in the image of its Creator.(AM) 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew,(AN) circumcised or uncircumcised,(AO) barbarian, Scythian, slave or free,(AP) but Christ is all,(AQ) and is in all.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves(AR) with compassion, kindness, humility,(AS) gentleness and patience.(AT) 13 Bear with each other(AU) and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.(AV) 14 And over all these virtues put on love,(AW) which binds them all together in perfect unity.(AX)

15 Let the peace of Christ(AY) rule in your hearts, since as members of one body(AZ) you were called to peace.(BA) And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ(BB) dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom(BC) through psalms,(BD) hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.(BE) 17 And whatever you do,(BF) whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks(BG) to God the Father through him.

16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;

22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

16 So let no one (A)judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a [a]festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 (B)which are a shadow of things to come, but the [b]substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has [c]not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to (C)the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, (D)grows with the increase that is from God.

20 [d]Therefore, if you (E)died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, (F)why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— 21 (G)“Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—(H)according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 (I)These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and [e]neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

Not Carnality but Christ

If then you were (J)raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, (K)where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the (L)earth. (M)For you died, (N)and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (O)When Christ who is (P)our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in (Q)glory.

(R)Therefore put to death (S)your members which are on the earth: (T)fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, (U)which is idolatry. (V)Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon (W)the sons of disobedience, (X)in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.

(Y)But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who (Z)is renewed in knowledge (AA)according to the image of Him who (AB)created him, 11 where there is neither (AC)Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, (AD)but Christ is all and in all.

Character of the New Man

12 Therefore, (AE)as the elect of God, holy and beloved, (AF)put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 (AG)bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 (AH)But above all these things (AI)put on love, which is the (AJ)bond of perfection. 15 And let (AK)the peace of God rule in your hearts, (AL)to which also you were called (AM)in one body; and (AN)be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another (AO)in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And (AP)whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
