The Incomparable Christ

13 [a]For He rescued us from the [b](A)domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of [c](B)His beloved Son, 14 (C)in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

15 [d]He is the (D)image of the (E)invisible God, the (F)firstborn of all creation: 16 for [e](G)by Him all things were created, (H)both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether (I)thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—(J)all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He [f](K)is before all things, and in Him all things [g]hold together. 18 He is also the (L)head of (M)the body, the church; and He is (N)the beginning, (O)the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. 19 For [h]it was (P)the Father’s good pleasure for all (Q)the [i]fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to (R)reconcile all things to Himself, (S)whether things on earth or things in [j]heaven, having made (T)peace through (U)the blood of His cross.

21 And although you were (V)previously alienated and hostile in attitude, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now (W)reconciled you in His (X)body of flesh through death, in order to (Y)present you before Him (Z)holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in [k]the faith firmly (AA)established and steadfast, and not shifting from the (AB)hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed (AC)in all creation under heaven, (AD)and of which I, Paul, [l]was made a [m](AE)minister.

24 (AF)Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh (AG)I am supplementing what is lacking [n]in Christ’s afflictions in behalf of (AH)His body, which is the church. 25 (AI)I [o]was made a minister of this church according to the (AJ)commission from God granted to me for your benefit, so that I might [p]fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, 26 that is, (AK)the mystery which had been hidden from the past ages and generations, but now has been revealed to His [q]saints, 27 to whom (AL)God willed to make known what (AM)the wealth of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles is, the mystery that is (AN)Christ in you, the (AO)hope of glory. 28 We proclaim Him, (AP)admonishing every person and teaching every person [r]with all (AQ)wisdom, so that we may (AR)present every person [s](AS)complete in Christ. 29 For this purpose I also (AT)labor, (AU)striving (AV)according to His [t]power which [u]works mightily within me.

The Incomparable Christ

13 For He has rescued us and has drawn us to Himself from the dominion of darkness, and has transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption [because of His sacrifice, resulting in] the forgiveness of our sins [and the cancellation of sins’ penalty].

15 He is the exact living image [the essential manifestation] of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible], the firstborn [the preeminent one, the sovereign, and the originator] of all creation. 16 For [a]by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth, [things] visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [that is, by His activity] and for Him. 17 And He Himself existed and is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. [His is the controlling, cohesive force of the universe.](A) 18 He is also the head [the life-source and leader] of the body, the [b]church; and He is the beginning, [c]the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will occupy the first place [He will stand supreme and be preeminent] in everything.(B) 19 For it pleased the Father for all the fullness [of deity—the sum total of His essence, all His perfection, powers, and attributes] to dwell [permanently] in Him (the Son), 20 and through [the intervention of] the Son to reconcile all things to Himself, making peace [with believers] through the blood of His cross; through Him, [I say,] whether things on earth or things in heaven.

21 And although you were at one time estranged and alienated and hostile-minded [toward Him], participating in evil things, 22 yet Christ has now reconciled you [to God] in His [d]physical body through death, in order to present you before the Father holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 [and He will do this] if you continue in the faith, well-grounded and steadfast, and not shifting away from the [confident] hope [that is a result] of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed [e]in all creation under heaven, and of which [gospel] I, Paul, was made a minister.

24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings on your behalf. And with my own body I [f]supplement whatever is lacking [on our part] of Christ’s afflictions, on behalf of His body, which is the church. 25 In this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship which God entrusted to me for your sake, so that I might make the word of God fully known [among you]— 26 that is, [g]the mystery which was hidden [from angels and mankind] for ages and generations, but has now been revealed to His saints (God’s people). 27 God [in His eternal plan] chose to make known to them how great for the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in and among you, the hope and guarantee of [realizing the] glory. 28 We proclaim Him, warning and instructing everyone in all wisdom [that is, with comprehensive insight into the word and purposes of God], so that we may present every person complete in Christ [mature, fully trained, and perfect in Him—the Anointed]. 29 For this I labor [often to the point of exhaustion], striving with His power and energy, which so greatly works within me.

  1. Colossians 1:16 Or in.
  2. Colossians 1:18 This refers to the entire body of born-again believers (whether past, present, or future), not a local congregation.
  3. Colossians 1:18 Christ is the first to be resurrected with an incorruptible, immortal body. Others who were raised had to die again.
  4. Colossians 1:22 Lit body of flesh.
  5. Colossians 1:23 Paul may be referring to the fact that the created world displays proof of the existence of an omnipotent, benevolent God (cf Rom 1:20), without whom there would be no possibility of salvation. Such a God is the foundation of the “good news.”
  6. Colossians 1:24 I.e. since the church is Christ’s body, figuratively speaking, whatever the church suffers can be considered additional sufferings by Christ Himself, and all such suffering was ordained and destined by God; what is left to suffer in God’s plan is what is “lacking of Christ’s afflictions.” Paul, as a member of the church, was destined to suffer through persecution etc., thereby taking his share of the church body’s divinely-ordained suffering.
  7. Colossians 1:26 I.e. that believing Gentiles would be united with believing Jews into one body of believers.

13 He (A)has delivered us from (B)the domain of darkness and transferred us to (C)the kingdom of (D)his beloved Son, 14 (E)in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Preeminence of Christ

15 (F)He is the image of (G)the invisible God, (H)the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by[a] him all things were created, (I)in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether (J)thrones or (K)dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created (L)through him and for him. 17 And (M)he is before all things, and in him all things (N)hold together. 18 And (O)he is the head of the body, the church. He is (P)the beginning, (Q)the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For (R)in him all the (S)fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and (T)through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, (U)making peace (V)by the blood of his cross.

21 (W)And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, (X)doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled (Y)in his body of flesh by his death, (Z)in order to present you holy and blameless and (AA)above reproach before him, 23 (AB)if indeed you continue in the faith, (AC)stable and steadfast, not shifting from (AD)the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed (AE)in all creation[b] under heaven, (AF)and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Paul's Ministry to the Church

24 Now (AG)I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh (AH)I am filling up (AI)what is lacking in Christ's afflictions (AJ)for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 (AK)of which I became a minister according to (AL)the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 (AM)the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 (AN)To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are (AO)the riches of the glory of (AP)this mystery, which is Christ in you, (AQ)the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that (AR)we may present everyone (AS)mature in Christ. 29 For this (AT)I toil, (AU)struggling (AV)with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

  2. Colossians 1:23 Or to every creature

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
