Gods geheim is Christus Zelf
2 U moet weten hoe zwaar de strijd is die ik voor u en voor de christenen van Laodicea voer en voor alle anderen met wie ik nog niet persoonlijk heb kennis gemaakt. 2 Ik wil graag dat u bemoedigd zult worden en door sterke liefde aan elkaar verbonden blijft. En dat u de rijke ervaring zult hebben van het kennen van Christus. Want Gods geheim, dat Hij nu ten slotte heeft bekendgemaakt, is Christus Zelf. 3 Al de schatten van wijsheid en kennis zijn in Hem verborgen.
4 Ik zeg dit om te voorkomen dat men u door mooie woorden misleidt. 5 Al ben ik lichamelijk ver weg, in mijn geest ben ik bij u. Ik zie met blijdschap hoe ordelijk het er bij u aan toegaat en hoe sterk uw geloof in Christus is.
6 Daarom moet u, die Jezus Christus als uw Here hebt ontvangen, in het dagelijks leven één met Hem blijven. 7 Met uw wortels diep in Hem verankerd, moet u uw leven door Hem laten opbouwen. Blijf in geloof vasthouden aan wat u over Hem hebt geleerd en laat uw hart daarbij overvloeien van dankbaarheid.
8 Wees altijd op uw hoede. Laat u niet misleiden door mensen die met hun ideeën en verleidelijk gepraat proberen u weer tot een slaaf van menselijke tradities te maken. Die ideeën zijn hun ingegeven door de geesten van deze wereld en niet door Christus.
9 Want in Hem woont het hele wezen van God in een lichamelijke gestalte. 10 In Christus bent u dus volmaakt, want Hij is de hoogste heerser en autoriteit over elke andere macht. 11 In Hem hebt u ook een besnijdenis ondergaan. Natuurlijk niet lichamelijk, maar geestelijk. Want Hij heeft u door zijn Geest bevrijd van de macht van de zonde, die in uw lichaam heerste. 12 U bent door de doop met Christus begraven. Maar door het geloof in de macht van God, die ook Hem heeft opgewekt uit de dood, bent u nu met Hem opgestaan en hebt u nieuw leven ontvangen. 13 U was dood door uw ongehoorzaamheid aan God en de macht van de zonde leefde nog in u. Maar nu heeft Hij u samen met Christus levend gemaakt en al uw overtredingen vergeven. 14 Hij heeft ons strafblad dat tegen ons getuigde verscheurd, de lijst met regels waaraan we ons niet hebben gehouden. Dat bewijs heeft Hij vernietigd door het aan het kruis te slaan. 15 Op die manier heeft God zich ontdaan van alle heersers en machten. Hij heeft hen in het openbaar te kijk gezet en daarmee laten zien dat zij door het kruis van Christus overwonnen en verslagen zijn.
16 Laat u dus door niemand bekritiseren over wat u eet of drinkt. En of u zich al of niet aan feestdagen en rustdagen moet houden. 17 Dit soort dingen zijn immers maar tijdelijk. Zij zijn slechts een schaduw van toekomstige zaken. Maar ons lichaam behoort aan Christus toe. 18 Laat u niet veroordelen door mensen die graag aan zelfvernedering of engelenverering doen, of die beweren een visioen te hebben gehad, zij laten zich alleen maar voorstaan op hun eigen bedenksels. 19 Zij houden zich niet aan Christus, het hoofd van het Lichaam, de Gemeente, dat met gewrichten en pezen door Hem wordt bijeengehouden. Alleen door met Hem verbonden te blijven, kan de Gemeente groeien zoals God het wil.
20 Als u nu met Christus gestorven bent en dus dood bent voor de wereldmachten, waarom laat u zich dan toch, alsof u nog steeds in de wereld leeft, weer regels opleggen zoals: 21 ‘blijf af,’ ‘eet dat niet’ en ‘raak dat niet aan’. 22 Zulke regels zijn door mensen bedacht. In de loop der tijd veranderen die steeds weer. 23 Die regels lijken wel heel mooi en wijs, maar het is een zelfgemaakte godsdienst. Zij vragen heel wat vroomheid, vernedering en zelfkastijding. Zij zijn waardeloos en bevredigen alleen het gevoel van eigenwaarde.

2 For I want you to know how hard I work for you, for those in Laodicea, and for the rest of those who have not met me personally. 2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged, that they may be joined together in love, and that they may have all the riches derived from being assured of understanding and fully knowing God’s secret truth, which is — the Messiah! 3 It is in him that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden.
4 I say this so that no one will fool you with plausible but specious arguments. 5 For although I am away from you physically, I am with you in spirit, rejoicing as I see the disciplined and resolute firmness of your trust in the Messiah. 6 Therefore, just as you received the Messiah Yeshua as Lord, keep living your life united with him. 7 Remain deeply rooted in him; continue being built up in him and confirmed in your trust, the way you were taught, so that you overflow in thanksgiving.
8 Watch out, so that no one will take you captive by means of philosophy and empty deceit, following human tradition which accords with the elemental spirits of the world but does not accord with the Messiah. 9 For in him, bodily, lives the fullness of all that God is. 10 And it is in union with him that you have been made full — he is the head of every rule and authority.
11 Also it was in union with him that you were circumcised with a circumcision not done by human hands, but accomplished by stripping away the old nature’s control over the body. In this circumcision done by the Messiah, 12 you were buried along with him by being immersed; and in union with him, you were also raised up along with him by God’s faithfulness that worked when he raised Yeshua from the dead. 13 You were dead because of your sins, that is, because of your “foreskin,” your old nature. But God made you alive along with the Messiah by forgiving you all your sins. 14 He wiped away the bill of charges against us. Because of the regulations, it stood as a testimony against us; but he removed it by nailing it to the execution-stake. 15 Stripping the rulers and authorities of their power, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by means of the stake.
16 So don’t let anyone pass judgment on you in connection with eating and drinking, or in regard to a Jewish festival or Rosh-Hodesh or Shabbat. 17 These are a shadow of things that are coming, but the body is of the Messiah.
18 Don’t let anyone deny you the prize by insisting that you engage in self-mortification or angel-worship. Such people are always going on about some vision they have had, and they vainly puff themselves up by their worldly outlook. 19 They fail to hold to the Head, from whom the whole Body, receiving supply and being held together by its joints and ligaments, grows as God makes it grow. 20 If, along with the Messiah, you died to the elemental spirits of the world, then why, as if you still belonged to the world, are you letting yourselves be bothered by its rules? — 21 “Don’t touch this!” “Don’t eat that!” “Don’t handle the other!” 22 Such prohibitions are concerned with things meant to perish by being used [not by being avoided!], and they are based on man-made rules and teachings.[a] 23 They do indeed have the outward appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed religious observances, false humility and asceticism; but they have no value at all in restraining people from indulging their old nature.

2 For I want you to have da’as of how great a ma’avak (struggle) I have for you and the ones in Laodicea, and as many as have not seen me panim el panim (directly, in person),
2 That their levavot may be given chozek (strength), having been made an aguda of ahavah and all osher (wealth) of the full assurance of binah, resulting in the da’as of the raz of Hashem, namely Moshiach,
3 In whom is nistar (hidden) all the otzarot (treasures) of chochmah and da’as. [YESHAYAH 11:2; YIRMEYAH 23:5]
4 This I say so that no one may delude you with the sleight of hand of the ba’al melitzot (rhetorician).
5 For, though absent in basar, but present with you in the Ruach Hakodesh, with lev same’ach (glad heart) I am seeing your order and the firmness of your [Orthodox Jewish] emunah in Moshiach.
6 Therefore, as you became mekabel Moshiach and received Moshiach Adoneinu Yehoshua, so let your halichah be in Him,
7 Having been rooted and built up in Moshiach and being firmly founded in the emunah as you were given Messianic [orthodox] lernen [study], abounding in hodayah.
8 Beware lest there be anyone of you taken captive through philosophical tevunah (wisdom) and empty deceit according to the kabbalah (oral tradition) of mere Bnei Adam, according to the ikkarim (basic principles) of the Olam Hazeh and not according to Moshiach;
9 Because in Moshiach kol melo Elohim (all the plentitude of G-d) finds its bodily maon laShechinah (dwelling place for the Shechinah).
10 And you have been granted melo (plentitude) in Moshiach, who is the Rosh of all rule and authority.
11 In Moshiach also you were circumcised with a Bris Milah not made with human hands, a Bris Milah of the surgically removing of the body of the basar (old fallen and unregenerate nature) in the Bris Milah of Moshiach,
12 Having been buried in the Ohel of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach’s tevilah with him, with whom also you were made to stand up spiritually in the Techiyah together through your emunah and bitachon in the ma’aseh of Hashem who made Moshiach stand up from the Mesim.
13 And you being dead in your peysha’im (YESHAYAH 53:8) and your orlat basar (uncircumcision of flesh) he made alive together, you together with Moshiach, having granted you selicha for all your peysha’im;
14 Having erased the handsigned sefer of guilt choiv (debt), the heavenly indictment against us in the maleh chukat haTorah (full statute requirement of the Torah), which was against us. Moshiach has done away with this opposing record, having nailed it to Moshiach’s Etz.
15 Having disarmed the rulers and the authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, having triumphed over them by Moshiach’s Etz.
16 Therefore, let no one judge you [Goyim] in eating and in drinking or in respect to a yom tov (yontev) or a rosh chodesh or Shabbos;
17 Which are a shadow of the things to come in the Olam HaBah; but the reality, the substance, is Moshiach.
18 Let no one deprive you of the prize by delighting in his mystical asceticism and his veneration of malachim and delving into his chazonot (visions) and being vainly puffed up by the machshavot (thoughts) of his basar (old nature unrenewed and unregenerated by the Ruach Hakodesh),
19 And not holding on to the Rosh, out of whom all the Moshiach’s Guf, being fully supplied and being be’ichud (united) together through the joints and ligaments, grows with the growth of Hashem.
20 Als (Since) you died with Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach to the ikkarim (basic principles) of the Olam Hazeh, why, as though you still belonged to the keyam (existence) of the Olam Hazeh, do you (Goyim) chain yourself to chumra legalisms?
21 "Do not touch; do not taste; do not handle."
22 The things referred to are all destined to deterioration with use, according to the humanly contrived mitzvot and the humanly contrived chukim (laws) of mere Bnei Adam [i.e., non-Biblical teachings and humanly contrived religious tradition]YESHAYAH 29:13],
23 Which things have a superficial appearance of chochmah in self-imposed religion and mystical asceticism and severe physical mortification, but are of no value against the indulgence of the basar (the old nature unrenewed and unregenerated by the Ruach Hakodesh).
