Christian Graces; Final Greetings

Masters,(A) give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.

The Whole Armor of God

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 (D)Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the [b]wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against (E)principalities, against powers, against (F)the rulers of [c]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 (G)Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand (H)in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, (I)having girded your waist with truth, (J)having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 (K)and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking (L)the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And (M)take the helmet of salvation, and (N)the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 (O)praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, (P)being watchful to this end with all perseverance and (Q)supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, (R)that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which (S)I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

The Parable of the Unjust Steward

16 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was [a]wasting his goods. So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an (A)account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’

“Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’

“So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred [b]measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred [c]measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than (B)the sons of light.

“And I say to you, (C)make friends for yourselves by unrighteous [d]mammon, that when [e]you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 (D)He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your (E)own?

13 (F)“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

(A)that every man should set free his male and female slave—a Hebrew man or woman—(B)that no one should keep a Jewish brother in bondage. 10 Now when all the princes and all the people, who had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should set free his male and female slaves, that no one should keep them in bondage anymore, they obeyed and let them go. 11 But afterward they changed their minds and made the male and female slaves return, whom they had set free, and brought them into subjection as male and female slaves.

12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 13 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I made a (C)covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying, 14 “At the end of (D)seven years let every man set free his Hebrew brother, who [a]has been sold to him; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you.” But your fathers did not obey Me nor incline their ear. 15 Then you [b]recently turned and did what was right in My sight—every man proclaiming liberty to his neighbor; and you (E)made a covenant before Me (F)in the house which is called by My name. 16 Then you turned around and (G)profaned My name, and every one of you brought back his male and female slaves, whom you had set at liberty, at their pleasure, and brought them back into subjection, to be your male and female slaves.’

17 “Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and every one to his neighbor. (H)Behold, I proclaim liberty to you,’ says the Lord(I)‘to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine! And I will deliver you to (J)trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth.

To (D)loose the bonds of wickedness,
(E)To undo the [a]heavy burdens,
(F)To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?
Is it not (G)to share your bread with the hungry,

And not hide yourself from (I)your own flesh?
(J)Then your light shall break forth like the morning,

Yet now (A)our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we (B)are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards.”

And I became very angry when I heard their outcry and these words. After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them, (C)“Each of you is [a]exacting usury from his brother.” So I [b]called a great assembly against them. And I said to them, “According to our ability we have (D)redeemed our Jewish brethren who were sold to the nations. Now indeed, will you even sell your brethren? Or should they be sold to us?”

Then they were silenced and found nothing to say. Then I said, “What you are doing is not good. Should you not walk (E)in the fear of our God (F)because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies? 10 I also, with my brethren and my servants, am lending them money and grain. Please, let us stop this [c]usury! 11 Restore now to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also a hundredth of the money and the grain, the new wine and the oil, that you have charged them.”

12 So they said, “We will restore it, and will require nothing from them; we will do as you say.”

Then I called the priests, (G)and required an oath from them that they would do according to this promise. 13 Then (H)I shook out [d]the fold of my garment and said, “So may God shake out each man from his house, and from his property, who does not perform this promise. Even thus may he be shaken out and emptied.”

And all the assembly said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord. (I)Then the people did according to this promise.
