²² These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish^(A) with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.^(B)

¹⁴ and will pay no attention to Jewish myths^(A) or to the merely human commands^(B) of those who reject the truth.^(C)

¹³ The Lord says:

¹³ You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”^(A) The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord,^(B) and the Lord for the body.

⁸ You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”^(B)

⁹ And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe^[b] your own traditions!^{(C) 10} For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’^[c](D) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’^{[d](E) 11} But you say^(F) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— ¹² then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. ¹³ Thus you nullify the word of God^(G) by your tradition^(H) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”

³ Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? ⁴ For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’^[a](A) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’^{[b](B) 5} But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ ⁶ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. ⁷ You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

²⁷ Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures^(A) to eternal life,^(B) which the Son of Man^(C) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal^(D) of approval.”

¹⁸ “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? ¹⁹ For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods^(A) clean.)^(B)

³⁷ He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all.
