The Preeminence of Christ

15 (A)He is the image of (B)the invisible God, (C)the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by[a] him all things were created, (D)in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether (E)thrones or (F)dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created (G)through him and for him. 17 And (H)he is before all things, and in him all things (I)hold together. 18 And (J)he is the head of the body, the church. He is (K)the beginning, (L)the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For (M)in him all the (N)fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and (O)through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, (P)making peace (Q)by the blood of his cross.

21 (R)And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, (S)doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled (T)in his body of flesh by his death, (U)in order to present you holy and blameless and (V)above reproach before him, 23 (W)if indeed you continue in the faith, (X)stable and steadfast, not shifting from (Y)the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed (Z)in all creation[b] under heaven, (AA)and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Paul's Ministry to the Church

24 Now (AB)I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh (AC)I am filling up (AD)what is lacking in Christ's afflictions (AE)for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 (AF)of which I became a minister according to (AG)the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 (AH)the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 (AI)To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are (AJ)the riches of the glory of (AK)this mystery, which is Christ in you, (AL)the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that (AM)we may present everyone (AN)mature in Christ. 29 For this (AO)I toil, (AP)struggling (AQ)with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

For I want you to know (AR)how great a (AS)struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that (AT)their hearts may be encouraged, being (AU)knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of (AV)God's mystery, which is Christ, (AW)in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this in order (AX)that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. For (AY)though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your (AZ)good order and (BA)the firmness of your faith in Christ.

Alive in Christ

(BB)Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, (BC)rooted and (BD)built up in him and (BE)established in the faith, just (BF)as you were taught, abounding (BG)in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive by (BH)philosophy and (BI)empty deceit, according to (BJ)human tradition, according to the (BK)elemental spirits[c] of the world, and not according to Christ. For (BL)in him the whole fullness of deity dwells (BM)bodily, 10 and (BN)you have been filled in him, who is (BO)the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also (BP)you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by (BQ)putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 (BR)having been buried with him in baptism, in which (BS)you were also raised with him through faith in (BT)the powerful working of God, (BU)who raised him from the dead. 13 (BV)And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God (BW)made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by (BX)canceling (BY)the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 (BZ)He disarmed the rulers and authorities[d] and (CA)put them to open shame, by (CB)triumphing over them in him.[e]

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image(A) of the invisible God,(B) the firstborn(C) over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created:(D) things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities;(E) all things have been created through him and for him.(F) 17 He is before all things,(G) and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head(H) of the body, the church;(I) he is the beginning and the firstborn(J) from among the dead,(K) so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased(L) to have all his fullness(M) dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile(N) to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven,(O) by making peace(P) through his blood,(Q) shed on the cross.

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies(R) in your minds(S) because of[a] your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled(T) you by Christ’s physical body(U) through death to present you(V) holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation(W) 23 if you continue(X) in your faith, established(Y) and firm, and do not move from the hope(Z) held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven,(AA) and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.(AB)

Paul’s Labor for the Church

24 Now I rejoice(AC) in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions,(AD) for the sake of his body, which is the church.(AE) 25 I have become its servant(AF) by the commission God gave me(AG) to present to you the word of God(AH) in its fullness— 26 the mystery(AI) that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known(AJ) among the Gentiles the glorious riches(AK) of this mystery, which is Christ in you,(AL) the hope of glory.

28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing(AM) and teaching everyone with all wisdom,(AN) so that we may present everyone fully mature(AO) in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously(AP) contend(AQ) with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.(AR)

I want you to know how hard I am contending(AS) for you and for those at Laodicea,(AT) and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart(AU) and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery(AV) of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.(AW) I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.(AX) For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit(AY) and delight to see how disciplined(AZ) you are and how firm(BA) your faith in Christ(BB) is.

Spiritual Fullness in Christ

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord,(BC) continue to live your lives in him, rooted(BD) and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught,(BE) and overflowing with thankfulness.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,(BF) which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[b] of this world(BG) rather than on Christ.

For in Christ all the fullness(BH) of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head(BI) over every power and authority.(BJ) 11 In him you were also circumcised(BK) with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[c](BL) was put off when you were circumcised by[d] Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism,(BM) in which you were also raised with him(BN) through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.(BO)

13 When you were dead in your sins(BP) and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[e] alive(BQ) with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,(BR) 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness,(BS) which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.(BT) 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities,(BU) he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them(BV) by the cross.[f]
