5 Énekelt pedig Debora és Bárák, az Abinoám fia azon a napon, mondván:
2 Hogy a vezérek vezettek Izráelben,
Hogy a nép önként kele föl: áldjátok az Urat!
3 Halljátok meg királyok, figyeljetek fejedelmek!
Én, én az Úrnak éneket mondok,
Dícséretet zengek az Úrnak, az Izráel Istenének.
4 Uram, mikor Szeirbõl kijövél, Mikor lépdelél Edom mezejérõl:
Megrendült a föld, csepegett az ég,
A föllegek is víztõl áradának.
5 A hegyek megrendültek az Úrnak orczája elõtt,
Még ez a Sinai is, az Úrnak, az Izráel Istenének színe elõtt.
6 Sámgárnak, az Anath fiának napjaiban,
Jáhel idejében pihentek az utak,
És az útonjárók tekervényes ösvényekre tértek.
7 Megszüntek a kerítetlen helyek Izráelben, megszüntek végképen,
Mígnem én Debora felkelék,
Felkelék Izráel anyjaként.
8 Új isteneket ha választott [a nép,]
Mindjárt [kigyúlt] a harcz a kapuk elõtt;
De paizs, és dárda avagy láttatott-é
A negyvenezereknél az Izráel között?
9 Szívem azoké, kik parancsolnak Izráelben,
Kik a nép közül önként ajánlkoztak: áldjátok az Urat!
10 Kik ültök fehér szamarakon,
Kik ültök a szõnyegeken
És a kik gyalog jártok: [mind] énekeljetek!
11 Az íjászok szavával a vízmerítõk között,
Ott beszéljék az Úrnak igazságát,
Az õ faluihoz való igazságit Izráelben.
Akkor [újra] a kapukhoz vonul az Úr népe!
12 Kelj fel, kelj fel Debora!
Serkenj fel, serkenj fel, mondj éneket!
Kelj fel Bárák és fogva vigyed foglyaidat, Abinoám fia!
13 Akkor lejött a hõsök maradéka;
Az Úrnak népe lejött hozzám a hatalmasok ellen.
14 Efraimból, kiknek gyökere Amálekben,
Utánad Benjámin, a te néped közé;
Mákirból jöttek le vezérek,
És Zebulonból, kik a vezéri pálczát tartják.
15 És Issakhár fejedelmei Deborával,
És mint Issakhár, úgy Bárák
A völgybe rohan követõivel.
[Csak] a Rúben patakjainál
Vannak nagy elhatározások.
16 Miért [maradtál] ülve a hodályban?
Hogy hallgasd nyájad bégetéseit?!
Rúben patakjainál nagyok voltak az elhatározások!
17 Gileád a Jordánon túl pihen.
Hát Dán miért idõzik hajóinál?
Áser a tenger partján ül és nyugszik öbleinél.
18 [De] Zebulon, az halálra elszánt lelkû nép,
És Nafthali, a mezõség magaslatain!
19 Királyok jöttek, harczoltanak;
Akkor harczoltak a Kanaán királyai
Taanaknál, Megiddó vizénél;
[De] egy darab ezüstöt sem vettenek.
20 Az égbõl harczoltak,
A csillagok az õ helyökbõl vívtak Siserával!
21 A Kison patakja seprette el õket;
Az õs patak, a Kison patakja!
Végy erõt én lelkem!
22 Akkor csattogtak a lovak körmei
A futás miatt, lovagjaik futásai miatt.
23 Átkozzátok Mérozt - mond az Úr követje, -
Átkozva-átkozzátok annak lakosait! Mert nem jöttek az Úrnak segítségére,
Az Úrnak segélyére vitézei közé.
24 De áldott legyen az asszonyok felett Jáhel,
A Keneus Héber felesége,
A sátorban [lakó] nõk felett legyen áldott!
25 [Az] vizet kért, õ tejet adott,
Fejedelmi csészében nyújtott tejszínét.
26 Balját a szegre,
Jobbját pedig a munkások põrölyére nyújtotta,
És ütötte Siserát, szétzúzta fejét,
És összetörte, általfúrta halántékát,
27 Lábainál leroskadt, elesett, feküdt,
Lábai között leroskadt, elesett;
A hol leroskadt, ott esett el megsemmisülve.
28 Kinézett az ablakon, és jajgatott
Siserának anyja a rostélyzat mögül:
"Miért késik megjõni szekere?
Hol késlekednek kocsijának gördülései?"
29 Fejedelemasszonyinak legokosabbjai válaszolnak néki;
Õ egyre csak azok szavait ismételgeti:
30 "Vajjon nem zsákmányra találtak-é, s mostan osztozkodnak?
Egy-két leányt minden férfiúnak;
A festett kelmék zsákmányát Siserának;
Tarka szövetek zsákmányát, tarkán hímzett öltözeteket,
Egy színes kendõt, két tarka ruhát nyakamra, mint zsákmányt."
31 Így veszszenek el minden te ellenségid, Uram!
De a kik téged szeretnek, [tündököljenek] mint a kelõ nap az õ erejében!
És megnyugovék a föld negyven esztendeig.

The Song of Deborah
5 On that day Deborah(A) and Barak son of Abinoam(B) sang this song:(C)
2 “When the princes in Israel take the lead,
when the people willingly offer(D) themselves—
praise the Lord!(E)
3 “Hear this, you kings! Listen, you rulers!
I, even I, will sing to[a] the Lord;(F)
I will praise the Lord, the God of Israel, in song.(G)
4 “When you, Lord, went out(H) from Seir,(I)
when you marched from the land of Edom,
the earth shook,(J) the heavens poured,
the clouds poured down water.(K)
5 The mountains quaked(L) before the Lord, the One of Sinai,
before the Lord, the God of Israel.
6 “In the days of Shamgar son of Anath,(M)
in the days of Jael,(N) the highways(O) were abandoned;
travelers took to winding paths.(P)
7 Villagers in Israel would not fight;
they held back until I, Deborah,(Q) arose,
until I arose, a mother in Israel.
8 God chose new leaders(R)
when war came to the city gates,(S)
but not a shield or spear(T) was seen
among forty thousand in Israel.
9 My heart is with Israel’s princes,
with the willing volunteers(U) among the people.
Praise the Lord!
10 “You who ride on white donkeys,(V)
sitting on your saddle blankets,
and you who walk along the road,
consider 11 the voice of the singers[b] at the watering places.
They recite the victories(W) of the Lord,
the victories of his villagers in Israel.
“Then the people of the Lord
went down to the city gates.(X)
12 ‘Wake up,(Y) wake up, Deborah!(Z)
Wake up, wake up, break out in song!
Arise, Barak!(AA)
Take captive your captives,(AB) son of Abinoam.’
13 “The remnant of the nobles came down;
the people of the Lord came down to me against the mighty.
14 Some came from Ephraim,(AC) whose roots were in Amalek;(AD)
Benjamin(AE) was with the people who followed you.
From Makir(AF) captains came down,
from Zebulun those who bear a commander’s[c] staff.
15 The princes of Issachar(AG) were with Deborah;(AH)
yes, Issachar was with Barak,(AI)
sent under his command into the valley.
In the districts of Reuben
there was much searching of heart.
16 Why did you stay among the sheep pens[d](AJ)
to hear the whistling for the flocks?(AK)
In the districts of Reuben
there was much searching of heart.
17 Gilead(AL) stayed beyond the Jordan.
And Dan, why did he linger by the ships?
Asher(AM) remained on the coast(AN)
and stayed in his coves.
18 The people of Zebulun(AO) risked their very lives;
so did Naphtali(AP) on the terraced fields.(AQ)
19 “Kings came(AR), they fought,
the kings of Canaan fought.
At Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo,(AS)
they took no plunder of silver.(AT)
20 From the heavens(AU) the stars fought,
from their courses they fought against Sisera.
21 The river Kishon(AV) swept them away,
the age-old river, the river Kishon.
March on, my soul; be strong!(AW)
22 Then thundered the horses’ hooves—
galloping, galloping go his mighty steeds.(AX)
23 ‘Curse Meroz,’ said the angel of the Lord.
‘Curse its people bitterly,
because they did not come to help the Lord,
to help the Lord against the mighty.’
24 “Most blessed of women(AY) be Jael,(AZ)
the wife of Heber the Kenite,(BA)
most blessed of tent-dwelling women.
25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk;(BB)
in a bowl fit for nobles she brought him curdled milk.
26 Her hand reached for the tent peg,
her right hand for the workman’s hammer.
She struck Sisera, she crushed his head,
she shattered and pierced his temple.(BC)
27 At her feet he sank,
he fell; there he lay.
At her feet he sank, he fell;
where he sank, there he fell—dead(BD).
28 “Through the window(BE) peered Sisera’s mother;
behind the lattice she cried out,(BF)
‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why is the clatter of his chariots delayed?’
29 The wisest of her ladies answer her;
indeed, she keeps saying to herself,
30 ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoils:(BG)
a woman or two for each man,
colorful garments as plunder for Sisera,
colorful garments embroidered,
highly embroidered garments(BH) for my neck—
all this as plunder?(BI)’
31 “So may all your enemies perish,(BJ) Lord!
But may all who love you be like the sun(BK)
when it rises in its strength.”(BL)
Then the land had peace(BM) forty years.

(C)When the people [b]willingly offer themselves,
Bless the Lord!
3 “Hear,(D) O kings! Give ear, O princes!
I, even (E)I, will sing to the Lord;
I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel.
4 “Lord, (F)when You went out from Seir,
When You marched from (G)the field of Edom,
The earth trembled and the heavens poured,
The clouds also poured water;
5 (H)The mountains [c]gushed before the Lord,
(I)This Sinai, before the Lord God of Israel.
6 “In the days of (J)Shamgar, son of Anath,
In the days of (K)Jael,
(L)The highways were deserted,
And the travelers walked along the byways.
7 Village life ceased, it ceased in Israel,
Until I, Deborah, arose,
Arose a mother in Israel.
8 They chose (M)new gods;
Then there was war in the gates;
Not a shield or spear was seen among forty thousand in Israel.
9 My heart is with the rulers of Israel
Who offered themselves willingly with the people.

10 “Speak, you who ride on white (N)donkeys,
Who sit in judges’ attire,
And who walk along the road.
11 Far from the noise of the archers, among the watering places,
There they shall recount the righteous acts of the Lord,
The righteous acts for His villagers in Israel;
Then the people of the Lord shall go down to the gates.
12 “Awake,(O) awake, Deborah!
Awake, awake, sing a song!
Arise, Barak, and lead your captives away,
O son of Abinoam!
13 “Then the survivors came down, the people against the nobles;
The Lord came down for me against the mighty.
14 From Ephraim were those whose roots were in (P)Amalek.
After you, Benjamin, with your peoples,
From Machir rulers came down,
And from Zebulun those who bear the recruiter’s staff.
15 And [d]the princes of Issachar were with Deborah;
As Issachar, so was Barak
Sent into the valley [e]under his command;
Among the divisions of Reuben
There were great resolves of heart.
16 Why did you sit among the sheepfolds,
To hear the pipings for the flocks?
The divisions of Reuben have great searchings of heart.
17 (Q)Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan,
And why did Dan remain [f]on ships?
(R)Asher continued at the seashore,
And stayed by his inlets.
18 (S)Zebulun is a people who jeopardized their lives to the point of death,
Naphtali also, on the heights of the battlefield.
19 “The kings came and fought,
Then the kings of Canaan fought
In (T)Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo;
They took no spoils of silver.
20 They fought from the heavens;
The stars from their courses fought against Sisera.
21 (U)The torrent of Kishon swept them away,
That ancient torrent, the torrent of Kishon.
O my soul, march on in strength!
22 Then the horses’ hooves pounded,
The galloping, galloping of his steeds.
23 ‘Curse Meroz,’ said the [g]angel of the Lord,
‘Curse its inhabitants bitterly,
Because they did not come to the help of the Lord,
To the help of the Lord against the mighty.’

She split and struck through his temple.
27 At her feet he sank, he fell, he lay still;
At her feet he sank, he fell;
Where he sank, there he fell (W)dead.
28 “The mother of Sisera looked through the window,
And cried out through the lattice,
‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why tarries the clatter of his chariots?’
29 Her wisest [h]ladies answered her,
Yes, she [i]answered herself,
30 ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil:
To every man a girl or two;
For Sisera, plunder of dyed garments,
Plunder of garments embroidered and dyed,
Two pieces of dyed embroidery for the neck of the looter?’
31 “Thus let all Your enemies (X)perish, O Lord!
But let those who love Him be (Y)like the (Z)sun
When it comes out in full (AA)strength.”
So the land had rest for forty years.
