21 And Hashem visited Sarah as He had said, and Hashem did unto Sarah just as He had spoken.
2 For Sarah conceived, and bore Avraham ben in his old age, at the mo’ed (set time) of which Elohim had given promise unto him.
3 And Avraham called the shem of bno that was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Yitzchak.
4 And Avraham circumcised bno Yitzchak at age shemonat yamim, as Elohim had commanded him.
5 And Avraham was a hundred years old, when bno Yitzchak was born unto him.
6 And she said, Elohim hath brought me tzechok (laughter), so that all that hear yitzchak (will laugh) with me.
7 And she said, Who would have said unto Avraham, that Sarah should nurse banim? for I have borne him ben in his old age.
8 And the yeled grew, and was weaned; and Avraham made a mishteh gadol the same day that Yitzchak was weaned.
9 And Sarah saw the ben of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had borne unto Avraham, metzachek (mocking, scoffing).
10 Therefore she said unto Avraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her ben: for the ben of this bondwoman shall not be heir with beni (my son), even with Yitzchak.
11 And the thing was very grievous in the eyes of Avraham because of bno.
12 And Elohim said unto Avraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the na’ar, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, shema (pay heed) unto her voice; for in Yitzchak shall thy zera be called.
13 And also of the ben haamah will I make a nation, because he is thy zera.
14 And Avraham rose up early in the boker, and took lechem, and a skin of mayim, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the yeled, and sent her away; and she departed, and wandered in the midbar of Beer-Sheva.
15 And the mayim in the skin was done, and she cast the yeled under one of the bushes.
16 And she went off, and sat down about a bowshot away: for she thought, Let me not see the mot hayeled. And she sat there nearby, and lifted up her voice, and wept.
17 And Elohim heard the voice of the na’ar; and the Malach Elohim called to Hagar out of Shomayim, and said unto her, Mah lach, Hagar? fear not; for Elohim hath heard the voice of the na’ar where he is.
18 Arise, lift up the na’ar, and hold him in thine yad; for I will make him a goy gadol.
19 And Elohim opened her eyes, and she saw a be’er of mayim; and she went, and filled the skin with mayim, and gave the na’ar drink.
20 And Elohim was with the na’ar; and he grew, and dwelt in the midbar, and became a roveh keshet (an archer).
21 And he dwelt in the midbar of Paran: and his em got him an isha out of Eretz Mitzrayim.
22 And it came to pass at that time, that Avimelech and Phichol the sar tz’va of his spoke unto Avraham, saying, Elohim is with thee in all that thou doest:
23 Now therefore swear unto me here before Elohim that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my child, nor with my descendant: but according to the chesed that I have showed thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the eretz wherein thou hast sojourned.
24 And Avraham said, I will swear.
25 And Avraham reproved Avimelech because of a be’er hamayim, which Avimelech’s avadim had violently seized.
26 And Avimelech said, I know not who hath done this thing; neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but today.
27 And Avraham took tzon and oxen, and gave them unto Avimelech; and both of them made a brit.
28 And Avraham set apart seven ewe lambs of the tzon by themselves.
29 And Avimelech said unto Avraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set apart by themselves?
30 And he said, For these sheva ewe lambs shalt thou accept of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have dug this well.
31 Therefore he called that place Beer-Sheva; because there they swore an oath both of them.
32 Thus they made a brit at Beer-Sheva: then Avimelech rose up, and Phichol the sar tzeva of his, and they returned into eretz Pelishtim.
33 And Avraham planted an eshel (tamarisk tree) in Beer-Sheva, and called there on the Shem of Hashem El Olam.
34 And Avraham sojourned in eretz Pelishtim yamim rabbim.

Isaac Is Born(A)
21 And the Lord (B)visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah (C)as He had spoken. 2 For Sarah (D)conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, (E)at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—(F)Isaac.[a] 4 Then Abraham (G)circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, (H)as God had commanded him. 5 Now (I)Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 And Sarah said, (J)“God has [b]made me laugh, and all who hear (K)will laugh with me.” 7 She also said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? (L)For I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Hagar and Ishmael Depart(M)
8 So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned.
9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar (N)the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, (O)scoffing.[c] 10 Therefore she said to Abraham, (P)“Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.” 11 And the matter was very [d]displeasing in Abraham’s sight (Q)because of his son.
12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for (R)in Isaac your seed shall be called. 13 Yet I will also make (S)a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your [e]seed.”
14 So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and [f]a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and (T)sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs. 16 Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.
17 And (U)God heard the voice of the lad. Then the (V)angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for (W)I will make him a great nation.”
19 Then (X)God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink. 20 So God (Y)was with the lad; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, (Z)and became an archer. 21 He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran; and his mother (AA)took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
A Covenant with Abimelech
22 And it came to pass at that time that (AB)Abimelech and Phichol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, (AC)“God is with you in all that you do. 23 Now therefore, (AD)swear[g] to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt.”
24 And Abraham said, “I will swear.”
25 Then Abraham rebuked Abimelech because of a well of water which Abimelech’s servants (AE)had seized. 26 And Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor had I heard of it until today.” 27 So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them (AF)made a [h]covenant. 28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
29 Then Abimelech asked Abraham, (AG)“What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves?”
30 And he said, “You will take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that (AH)they may be my witness that I have dug this well.” 31 Therefore he (AI)called that place [i]Beersheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.
32 Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba. So Abimelech rose with Phichol, the commander of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and (AJ)there called on the name of the Lord, (AK)the Everlasting God. 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines many days.

Isaak
21 Der Herr wandte sich Sara zu und machte sein Versprechen wahr, das er ihr gegeben hatte: 2 Sie wurde schwanger und brachte einen Jungen zur Welt. Abraham wurde trotz seines hohen Alters noch einmal Vater, genau zu der Zeit, die Gott angegeben hatte.
3 So kam es, dass Abraham und Sara endlich einen gemeinsamen Sohn hatten. Abraham gab ihm den Namen Isaak (»Gelächter«). 4 Als Isaak acht Tage alt war, beschnitt Abraham ihn, so wie Gott es ihm aufgetragen hatte. 5 Er war zur Zeit der Geburt 100 Jahre alt. 6 Sara rief: »Gott lässt mich wieder lachen! Jeder, der das erfährt, wird mit mir lachen! 7 Denn wer hätte gedacht, dass ich in meinem Alter noch Mutter werde? Abraham hat Jahrzehnte darauf warten müssen, aber jetzt habe ich ihm einen Sohn geboren!«
8 Isaak wuchs heran, und als Sara aufhörte, ihn zu stillen, feierte Abraham mit seinen Leuten ein großes Fest.
Hagar und Ismael müssen gehen
9 Sara bemerkte, wie Ismael – der Sohn von Abraham und der Ägypterin Hagar – sich über Isaak lustig machte. 10 Darüber wurde sie sehr zornig und bedrängte Abraham: »Jage diese Sklavin und ihren Sohn fort! Ich will nicht, dass mein Sohn Isaak mit ihm das Erbe teilen muss!«
11 Abraham war damit gar nicht einverstanden, denn schließlich war auch Ismael sein Sohn. 12 Aber Gott sagte zu ihm: »Sträube dich nicht dagegen, den Jungen und die Sklavin wegzuschicken! Tu alles, was Sara von dir fordert, denn nur die Nachkommen deines Sohnes Isaak werden das auserwählte Volk sein! 13 Aber auch Ismaels Nachkommen werde ich zu einem großen Volk machen, weil er von dir abstammt!«
14 Am nächsten Morgen stand Abraham früh auf. Er holte etwas zu essen und einen Ledersack voll Wasser, hängte Hagar alles über die Schulter und schickte sie mit ihrem Sohn weg. Hagar irrte ziellos in der Wüste von Beerscheba umher. 15 Bald ging ihnen das Wasser aus. Da ließ sie den Jungen unter einem Strauch zurück 16 und setzte sich etwa hundert Meter davon entfernt auf die Erde. »Ich kann nicht mit ansehen, wie mein Kind stirbt!«, weinte sie.
17 Aber Gott hörte den Jungen schreien. Der Engel Gottes rief Hagar vom Himmel herab zu: »Warum weinst du, Hagar? Hab keine Angst – Gott hat das Schreien des Jungen dort unter dem Strauch gehört! 18 Geh zu ihm und hilf ihm auf, denn aus seinen Nachkommen will ich ein großes Volk machen!«
19 Dann ließ Gott sie einen Brunnen sehen. Sie füllte ihren Ledersack mit Wasser und gab ihrem Sohn zu trinken.
20-21 Gott kümmerte sich auch weiterhin um Ismael. Er wuchs heran und wurde ein Bogenschütze. Er lebte in der Wüste Paran, und seine Mutter gab ihm eine Ägypterin zur Frau.
Abraham und Abimelech schließen einen Vertrag
22 Um diese Zeit kam Abimelech mit seinem Heerführer Pichol zu Abraham und sagte zu ihm: »Gott lässt dir alles gelingen, was du tust. 23 Darum schwöre hier und jetzt bei Gott, dass du weder mich noch meine Nachkommen hintergehen wirst! Ich habe dir nur Gutes getan, darum sei auch gut zu mir und dem ganzen Land, in dem du zu Gast bist!«
24 »Ich schwöre«, antwortete Abraham. 25 Er beschwerte sich aber bei Abimelech darüber, dass dessen Knechte einen seiner Brunnen weggenommen hatten. 26 »Das höre ich jetzt zum ersten Mal!«, erwiderte Abimelech. »Auch du hast mir bisher nichts davon erzählt! Ich weiß nicht, wer das getan hat!«
27 Abraham gab Abimelech Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder, und sie schlossen einen Vertrag miteinander. 28 Dann wählte Abraham noch sieben Lämmer aus und trennte sie vom Rest seiner Herde. 29 »Was soll das bedeuten?«, fragte Abimelech. 30 »Die sollst du von mir annehmen. Damit bestätigst du, dass ich den Brunnen gegraben habe und er mir gehört«, antwortete Abraham. 31 Seit dieser Zeit wurde der Ort Beerscheba (»Brunnen des Schwurs«[a]) genannt, weil Abraham und Abimelech ihre Abmachung dort mit einem Schwur besiegelt hatten.
32 Danach kehrten Abimelech und sein Heerführer Pichol wieder in das Land der Philister zurück. 33 Abraham pflanzte in Beerscheba eine Tamariske und betete dort zum Herrn, dem ewigen Gott. 34 Noch lange Zeit hielt er sich im Land der Philister auf.
