3 Now the Nachash was more arum (cunning, crafty, wiley) than any beast of the sadeh which Hashem Elohim had made. And he said unto the isha, Really? Hath Elohim said, Ye shall not eat of kol etz hagan?
2 And the isha said unto the Nachash, We may eat of the p’ri etz hagan;
3 But of the p’ri haEtz which is in the middle of the gan (garden), Elohim hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the Nachash said unto the isha, Ye shall not surely die;
5 For Elohim doth know that in the yom ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be like Elohim, knowing tov and rah.
6 And when the isha saw that HaEtz was tov for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and HaEtz to be desired to make one have seichel, she took of the p’ri thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her ish with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were eirummim (naked ones); and they sewed aleh te’enah (fig leaves) together, and made themselves khagorot (loin covering girdles).
8 And they heard the kol of Hashem Elohim walking in the gan in the cool of the day; and HaAdam and his isha hid from the presence of Hashem Elohim amongst the etz hagan.
9 And Hashem Elohim called unto HaAdam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard Thy voice in the gan (garden), and I was afraid, because I was eirom (naked); and so I hid.
11 And He said, Who told thee that thou wast eirom (naked)? Hast thou eaten of HaEtz, which I commanded thee that thou not eat thereof?
12 And HaAdam said,The isha whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of HaEtz, and I did eat.
13 And Hashem Elohim said unto the isha, What is this that thou hast done? And the isha said, The Nachash beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 And Hashem Elohim said unto the Nachash, Because thou hast done this, thou art arur (cursed) above kol habehemah, and above every beast of the sadeh; upon thy gakhon (belly) shalt thou go, and aphar shalt thou eat all the days of thy life;
15 And I will put eivah (enmity, Midrash Rabbah 23:5) between thee and HaIsha (see HaAlmah, Yeshayah 7:14), and between thy zera and her Zera; it shall crush thy rosh, and thou shalt strike his akev (heel).
16 Unto HaIsha He said, I will greatly multiply thy itzavon ([labor] pain) and thy childbearing; in pain thou shalt bring forth banim; and thy teshukah (longing, desire) shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17 And unto Adam He said, Because thou paid heed unto the voice of thy isha, and hast eaten of HaEtz, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it, arurah (cursed) is haadamah because of thee; in itzavon (pain, suffering, see verse 16) shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18 Kotz also and dardar shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the esev of the sadeh;
19 In the sweat of thy brow shalt thou eat lechem, till thou return unto haadamah; for out of it wast thou taken; for aphar thou art, and unto aphar shalt thou return.
20 And HaAdam called the shem of his isha Chavah (Eve); because she was the Em kol chai.
21 Unto Adam also and to his isha did Hashem Elohim make kesonos ohr, and clothed them.
22 And Hashem Elohim said, See, HaAdam is become like one of Us, knowing tov v’rah; and now, lest he put forth his yad, and take also of HaEtz HaChayyim, and eat, and chai l’olam (live forever);
23 Therefore Hashem Elohim sent him forth from the Gan Eden, to work haadamah from which place he was taken.
24 So He drove out HaAdam; and He placed miKedem (at the east) of the Gan Eden HaKeruvim, and a flaming cherev which was ever-turning, to be shomer over the Derech Etz HaChayyim (the Way of the Tree of Life, see Yn 14:6 on Derech).

3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any wild animal which Adonai, God, had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You are not to eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat from the fruit of the trees of the garden, 3 but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, ‘You are neither to eat from it nor touch it, or you will die.’” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “It is not true that you will surely die; 5 because God knows that on the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it had a pleasing appearance and that the tree was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her; and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together to make themselves loincloths.
8 They heard the voice of Adonai, God, walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, so the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Adonai, God, among the trees in the garden. 9 Adonai, God, called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I ordered you not to eat?” 12 The man replied, “The woman you gave to be with me — she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” 13 Adonai, God, said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman answered, “The serpent tricked me, so I ate.”
14 Adonai, God, said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all livestock and wild animals. You will crawl on your belly and eat dust as long as you live. 15 I will put animosity between you and the woman, and between your descendant and her descendant; he will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pain in childbirth. You will bring forth children in pain. Your desire will be toward your husband, but he will rule over you.”
17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to what your wife said and ate from the tree about which I gave you the order, ‘You are not to eat from it,’ the ground is cursed on your account; you will work hard to eat from it as long as you live. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat field plants. 19 You will eat bread by the sweat of your forehead till you return to the ground — for you were taken out of it: you are dust, and you will return to dust.”
20 The man called his wife Havah [life], because she was the mother of all living.
21 Adonai, God, made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
(A: v, S: iv) 22 Adonai, God, said, “See, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, to prevent his putting out his hand and taking also from the tree of life, eating, and living forever — ” 23 therefore Adonai, God, sent him out of the garden of ‘Eden to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So he drove the man out, and he placed at the east of the garden of ‘Eden the k’ruvim and a flaming sword which turned in every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.

Adam is ongehoorzaam aan God
3 De slang was sluwer dan alle andere wilde dieren die de Heer God had gemaakt. Hij zei tegen de vrouw: "God heeft toch gezegd dat jullie van geen enkele boom in de tuin mogen eten?" 2 De vrouw antwoordde: "We mogen van alle vruchten van alle bomen in de tuin eten. 3 Alleen niet van de vruchten van de boom die in het midden van de tuin staat. Daarvan heeft God gezegd: 'Van die boom mogen jullie niet eten. Jullie mogen hem zelfs niet aanraken. Want anders zullen jullie sterven.' " 4 Maar de slang zei tegen de vrouw: "Jullie zullen helemaal niet sterven. 5 God weet dat als jullie daarvan eten, jullie de waarheid zullen zien. Jullie zullen net als God weten wat goed en wat kwaad is." 6 Toen wilde de vrouw erg graag van de vruchten in de boom eten. Ze zagen er zó aantrekkelijk uit! Ze wilde er zo graag van eten omdat ze dan wijs zou worden. Ze plukte een vrucht van de boom en at hem op. Ze gaf er ook één aan haar man, die bij haar stond. Hij at de vrucht op. 7 Toen zagen ze de waarheid: ze zagen dat ze naakt waren. Daarom maakten ze twee schorten van de bladeren van een vijgenboom. Zo hadden ze iets om aan te trekken.
8 Toen hoorden ze de stem van de Heer God, die door de tuin wandelde in de avondwind. Haastig verstopten de man en zijn vrouw zich voor de Heer. Ze verborgen zich tussen de bomen van de tuin. 9 Maar de Heer God riep Adam en zei: 10 "Waar zit je?" Adam antwoordde: "Toen ik uw stem in de tuin hoorde, werd ik bang. Want ik ben naakt. Daarom heb ik me verstopt." 11 De Heer zei: "Wie heeft jou verteld dat je naakt bent? Heb je van de boom gegeten waarvan Ik had gezegd dat jullie daar niet van mochten eten?" 12 Adam zei: "De vrouw die U aan mij heeft gegeven, gaf mij een vrucht van de boom. Die heb ik opgegeten." 13 Toen zei de Heer tegen de vrouw: "Waarom heb je dat gedaan?" De vrouw zei: "De slang heeft mij bedrogen. Hij zei dat ik ervan moest eten en toen heb ik dat gedaan."
14 Toen zei de Heer God tegen de slang: "Omdat je dit hebt gedaan, ben je voortaan zwaar vervloekt. Je hele leven zul je op je buik kruipen en stof eten. 15 En jij en de vrouw zullen elkaars vijanden zijn. En jouw kinderen en haar kind[a] zullen elkaars vijanden zijn. Haar kind zal jouw kop verpletteren en jij zal de hiel van haar kind verpletteren."[b]
16 Tegen de vrouw zei Hij: "Voortaan zul je veel meer problemen hebben als je in verwachting bent. En als je kinderen worden geboren, zal dat veel pijn doen. Altijd zul je naar je man verlangen en hij zal over je heersen."
17 Tegen Adam zei Hij: "Je hebt naar je vrouw geluisterd en van de verboden boom gegeten. Omdat je dat hebt gedaan, zal de grond voortaan vervloekt zijn. Je zal altijd, je leven lang, moeten zwoegen om eten te hebben. 18 Er zullen dorens en distels op je akkers groeien en je zal wilde planten eten. 19 Je zal je in het zweet moeten werken om brood te eten te hebben, totdat je teruggaat naar de aarde waaruit je bent ontstaan. Je bent van stof gemaakt en je zal ook weer stof worden."
20 Adam noemde zijn vrouw Eva (= 'bron van leven'), omdat ze de moeder van alle mensen is geworden. 21 De Heer God maakte voor de mens en zijn vrouw kleren van dierenhuiden. Daarmee kleedde Hij hen aan. 22 En de Heer God zei: "De mens is nu net als Wij geworden. Want nu weet hij wat goed en wat kwaad is. Daarom mag hij nu niet meer van de boom van eeuwig leven eten. Want zo mag hij geen eeuwig leven krijgen." 23 Daarom stuurde de Heer God hem weg uit de tuin van Eden. Hij moest de aarde gaan bewerken waaruit hij was ontstaan. 24 Zo stuurde Hij de mens weg. Aan de oostkant van de tuin van Eden plaatste Hij engelen met een heen en weer flitsend vurig zwaard. Zij bewaakten de toegang tot de boom van eeuwig leven.

3 Aber die Schlange[a] war listiger als alle Tiere des Feldes, die Gott der Herr gemacht hatte; und sie sprach zu der Frau: Sollte Gott wirklich gesagt haben, dass ihr von keinem Baum im Garten essen dürft?
2 Da sprach die Frau zur Schlange: Von der Frucht der Bäume im Garten dürfen wir essen;
3 aber von der Frucht des Baumes, der in der Mitte des Gartens ist, hat Gott gesagt: Esst nicht davon und rührt sie auch nicht an, damit ihr nicht sterbt!
4 Da sprach die Schlange zu der Frau: Keineswegs werdet ihr sterben!
5 Sondern Gott weiß: An dem Tag, da ihr davon esst, werden euch die Augen geöffnet, und ihr werdet sein wie Gott und werdet erkennen, was Gut und Böse ist!
6 Und die Frau sah, dass von dem Baum gut zu essen wäre, und dass er eine Lust für die Augen und ein begehrenswerter Baum wäre, weil er weise macht; und sie nahm von seiner Frucht und aß, und sie gab davon auch ihrem Mann, der bei ihr war, und er aß.
Die Folgen des Sündenfalls
7 Da wurden ihnen beiden die Augen geöffnet, und sie erkannten, dass sie nackt waren; und sie banden sich Feigenblätter um und machten sich Schurze.
8 Und sie hörten die Stimme Gottes des Herrn, der im Garten wandelte, als der Tag kühl war; und der Mensch und seine Frau versteckten sich vor dem Angesicht Gottes des Herrn hinter den Bäumen des Gartens.
9 Da rief Gott der Herr den Menschen und sprach: Wo bist du?
10 Und er antwortete: Ich hörte deine Stimme im Garten und fürchtete mich, denn ich bin nackt; darum habe ich mich verborgen!
11 Da sprach er: Wer hat dir gesagt, dass du nackt bist? Hast du etwa von dem Baum gegessen, von dem ich dir geboten habe, du solltest nicht davon essen?
12 Da antwortete der Mensch: Die Frau, die du mir zur Seite gegeben hast, die gab mir von dem Baum, und ich aß!
13 Da sprach Gott der Herr zu der Frau: Warum hast du das getan? Die Frau antwortete: Die Schlange hat mich verführt; da habe ich gegessen!
14 Da sprach Gott der Herr zur Schlange: Weil du dies getan hast, so sollst du verflucht sein mehr als alles Vieh und mehr als alle Tiere des Feldes![b] Auf deinem Bauch sollst du kriechen und Staub sollst du fressen dein Leben lang!
15 Und ich will Feindschaft setzen zwischen dir und der Frau, zwischen deinem Samen[c] und ihrem Samen: Er wird dir den Kopf zertreten, und du wirst ihn in die Ferse stechen.[d]
16 Und zur Frau sprach er: Ich will die Mühen deiner Schwangerschaft sehr groß machen; mit Schmerzen sollst du Kinder gebären; und dein Verlangen wird auf deinen Mann gerichtet sein,[e] er aber soll über dich herrschen!
17 Und zu Adam sprach er: Weil du der Stimme deiner Frau gehorcht und von dem Baum gegessen hast, von dem ich dir gebot und sprach: »Du sollst nicht davon essen!«, so sei der Erdboden verflucht um deinetwillen! Mit Mühe sollst du dich davon nähren dein Leben lang;
18 Dornen und Disteln soll er dir tragen, und du sollst das Gewächs des Feldes essen.
19 Im Schweiße deines Angesichts sollst du [dein] Brot essen, bis du wieder zurückkehrst zum Erdboden; denn von ihm bist du genommen. Denn du bist Staub, und zum Staub wirst du wieder zurückkehren!
20 Und der Mensch gab seiner Frau den Namen Eva[f]; denn sie wurde die Mutter aller Lebendigen.
21 Und Gott der Herr machte Adam und seiner Frau Kleider aus Fell und bekleidete sie.
22 Und Gott der Herr sprach: Siehe, der Mensch ist geworden wie unsereiner, indem er erkennt, was Gut und Böse ist; nun aber — dass er nur nicht seine Hand ausstrecke und auch vom Baum des Lebens nehme und esse und ewig lebe!
23 So schickte ihn Gott der Herr aus dem Garten Eden, damit er den Erdboden bearbeite, von dem er genommen war.
24 Und er vertrieb den Menschen und ließ östlich vom Garten Eden die Cherubim[g] lagern und die Flamme des blitzenden Schwertes, um den Weg zum Baum des Lebens zu bewachen.

- (3,1) Die Schlange steht in der Schrift öfter für den Teufel oder Satan (Widersacher), ein gefallenes Engelwesen.
- (3,14) Aus Gottes Mund bedeutet der Fluch ein Gerichtswort (vgl. 5Mo 28,15.20). Er kommt als Folge der Sünde auf die Schlange, auf die Menschen wie auch auf die ganze Schöpfung (vgl. Röm 8,19-22; Gal 3,10-14; Offb 22,3).
- (3,15) »Same« steht im AT oft bildlich für Nachkommen.
- (3,15) od. Er wird dir den Kopf zermalmen, und du wirst ihm die Ferse zermalmen.
