Chapter 2

Trust in God

My child, when you come to serve the Lord,[a]
    prepare yourself for trials.(A)
Be sincere of heart and steadfast,
    and do not be impetuous in time of adversity.
Cling to him, do not leave him,
    that you may prosper in your last days.

Accept whatever happens to you;
    in periods of humiliation be patient.
For in fire gold is tested,
    and the chosen, in the crucible of humiliation.(B)
Trust in God, and he will help you;
    make your ways straight and hope in him.

You that fear the Lord, wait for his mercy,
    do not stray lest you fall.
You that fear the Lord, trust in him,
    and your reward will not be lost.
You that fear the Lord, hope for good things,
    for lasting joy and mercy.

10 Consider the generations long past and see:
    has anyone trusted in the Lord and been disappointed?
Has anyone persevered in his fear and been forsaken?
    has anyone called upon him and been ignored?(C)
11 For the Lord is compassionate and merciful;
    forgives sins and saves in time of trouble.

12 Woe to timid hearts and drooping hands,[b]
    to the sinner who walks a double path!
13 Woe to the faint of heart! For they do not trust,
    and therefore have no shelter!
14 Woe to you that have lost hope!
    what will you do at the Lord’s visitation?

15 Those who fear the Lord do not disobey his words;
    those who love him keep his ways.(D)
16 Those who fear the Lord seek to please him;
    those who love him are filled with his law.
17 Those who fear the Lord prepare their hearts
    and humble themselves before him.

18 Let us fall into the hands of the Lord
    and not into the hands of mortals,
For equal to his majesty is his mercy;
    and equal to his name are his works.(E)

Footnotes

  1. 2:1–11 Serving the Lord is not without its trials (v. 1); but no matter what happens, the genuine believer will remain sincere, steadfast, and faithful (vv. 2–3). Misfortune and humiliation are means of purification to prove one’s worth (vv. 4–5). Ben Sira believed that patience and unwavering trust in God are ultimately rewarded with the benefits of God’s mercy and of lasting joy (vv. 6–11).
  2. 2:12–18 A stern warning to those who compromise their faith in time of affliction; they fail in courage and trust and therefore have no security (vv. 12–14). But those who fear the Lord through obedience, reverence, love, and humility find his “mercy equal to his majesty” (vv. 15–18).

Faithfulness to God

My child, if you are going to serve the Lord, be prepared for times when you will be put to the test. Be sincere and determined. Keep calm when trouble comes. Stay with the Lord; never abandon him, and you will be prosperous at the end of your days. Accept whatever happens to you. Even if you suffer humiliation, be patient. (A)Gold is tested by fire, and human character is tested in the furnace of humiliation. Trust the Lord, and he will help you. Walk straight in his ways, and put your hope in him.

All you that fear the Lord, wait for him to show you his mercy. Do not turn away from him, or you will fall. All you that fear the Lord, trust him, and you will certainly be rewarded. All you that fear the Lord, look forward to his blessings of mercy and eternal happiness.

10 Think back to the ancient generations and consider this: has the Lord ever disappointed anyone who put his hope in him? Has the Lord ever abandoned anyone who held him in constant reverence? Has the Lord ever ignored anyone who prayed to him? 11 The Lord is kind and merciful; he forgives our sins and keeps us safe in time of trouble. 12 But those who lose their nerve are doomed—all those sinners who try to have it both ways! 13 Doom is sure to come for those who lose their courage; they have no faith, and so they will have no protection. 14 Doom is sure to come for those who lose their hope. What will they do when the Lord comes to judge them?

15 (B)Those who fear the Lord do not disobey his commands; those who love him will live as he wants them to live. 16 Those who fear and love the Lord will try to please him and devote themselves to the Law. 17 Those who fear the Lord are always ready to serve him. They humble themselves before him, and say,

18 We place our destiny in the hands of the Lord, not in human hands, because his mercy is as great as his majesty.
