7 Allora il sommo sacerdote gli disse: «Stanno queste cose proprio cosí?».
2 Egli disse: «Fratelli e padri, ascoltate. Il Dio della gloria apparve ad Abrahamo, nostro padre, mentre egli era in Mesopotamia, prima che abitasse in Carran.
3 e gli disse: "Usci dal tuo paese e dal tuo parentado e va' nel paese che io ti mostrerò".
4 Allora egli uscí dal paese dei Caldei e abitò in Carran; di là, dopo che suo padre morí, Dio lo fece venire in questo paese, nel quale ora voi abitate.
5 E non gli diede alcuna eredità, neppure lo spazio per posarvi un piede. Ma promise di darlo in proprietà a lui e alla sua progenie dopo di lui, quand'egli non aveva ancora alcun figlio.
6 E Dio parlò cosí: che la sua progenie dimorerebbe come forestiera in paese straniero, e che là sarebbe tenuta in schiavitú e maltrattata quattrocento anni.
7 Ma Dio aggiunse: "Io giudicherò la nazione alla quale avranno servito; e dopo ciò, essi usciranno e mi serviranno in questo luogo".
8 Poi gli diede il patto della circoncisione. E cosí Abrahamo generò Isacco e lo circoncise nell'ottavo giorno Isacco generò Giacobbe, e Giacobbe i dodici patriarchi.
9 I patriarchi, portando invidia a Giuseppe, lo vendettero perché fosse condotto in Egitto, ma Dio era con lui;
10 e lo liberò da tutte le sue tribolazioni e gli diede grazia e sapienza davanti al Faraone, re di Egitto, il quale lo costituí governatore sull'Egitto e su tutta la sua casa.
11 Or sopravvenne una carestia e una grande calamità in tutto il paese d'Egitto e di Canaan, e i nostri padri non trovavano viveri.
12 Ma Giacobbe, saputo che in Egitto c'era del grano, vi mandò una prima volta i nostri padri.
13 La seconda volta Giuseppe si fece riconoscere dai suoi fratelli e fu svelata al Faraone la parentela di Giuseppe.
14 Allora Giuseppe mandò a chiamare suo padre Giacobbe e tutto il suo parentado, in tutto settantacinque persone.
15 Giacobbe scese in Egitto, dove morí lui e i nostri padri.
16 Essi furono poi trasportati a Sichema e posti nel sepolcro, che Abrahamo aveva comprato a prezzo d'argento dai figli di Emor, padre di Sichem.
17 Ora, mentre si avvicinava il tempo della promessa che Dio aveva giurata ad Abrahamo, il popolo crebbe e si moltiplicò a in Egitto,
18 finché sorse in Egitto un altro re che non aveva conosciuto Giuseppe.
19 Questi, usando malizia contro la nostra stirpe, maltrattò i nostri padri fino a far esporre i loro bambini, perché non sopravvivessero.
20 In quel tempo nacque Mosé, ed era bello agli occhi di Dio; egli fu nutrito per tre mesi in casa di suo padre.
21 E, quando fu esposto, la figlia del Faraone lo raccolse e lo allevò come suo figlio.
22 Cosí Mosé fu istruito in tutta la sapienza degli Egiziani, ed era potente in parole ed opere.
23 Ma, quando giunse all'età di quarant'anni, gli venne in cuore di andare a visitare i suoi fratelli: i figli d'Israele.
24 E, vedendone uno che subiva un torto, lo difese e vendicò l'oppresso, uccidendo l'Egiziano.
25 Or egli pensava che i suoi fratelli avrebbero capito che Dio stava per dar loro liberazione per mezzo suo, ma essi non compresero.
26 Il giorno seguente egli comparve in mezzo a loro, mentre litigavano e li esortò alla pace, dicendo: "O uomini, voi siete fratelli, perché vi fate torto l'un l'altro?".
27 Ma colui che faceva torto al suo vicino lo respinse, dicendo: "Chi ti ha costituito principe e giudice su di noi?
28 Vuoi uccidere me, come ieri hai ucciso l'Egiziano?".
29 A queste parole Mosé fuggí e dimorò come forestiero nel paese Dimadian dove generò due figli.
30 Passati quarant'anni, l'angelo del Signore gli apparve nel deserto del monte Sinai, nella fiamma di fuoco di un roveto,
31 Alla vista di ciò, Mosé rimase stupito di quel che vedeva, e come si avvicinava per osservare, udì la voce del Signore,
32 che diceva: "Io sono il Dio dei tuoi padri, il Dio di Abrahamo, il Dio di Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe". Ma Mosé, tremando tutto, non ardiva alzare lo sguardo.
33 Allora il Signore gli disse: "Togliti i calzari dai piedi, perché il luogo sul quale stai è terra santa.
34 Ho certamente visto l'afflizione del mio popolo in Egitto e ho udito i loro sospiri, e sono disceso per liberarli; or dunque vieni, io ti manderò in Egitto".
35 Quel Mosé che avevano rifiutato, di cendo: "Chi ti ha costituito principe e giudice?". Quello mandò loro Dio come capo e liberatore, per mezzo dell'angelo che gli era apparso nel roveto.
36 Egli li condusse fuori, operando segni e prodigi nel paese di Egitto, nel Mar Rosso e nel deserto, per quarant'anni.
37 Questi è quel Mosé che disse ai figli d'Israele: Il Signore Dio vostro susciterà per voi, tra i vostri fratelli, un profeta come me. Ascoltatelo!.
38 Questi è colui che nell'assemblea nel deserto fu con l'angelo che gli parlava sul monte Sinai e con i nostri padri; e ricevette le parole viventi per trasmetterle a noi.
39 A lui i padri nostri non vollero ubbidire; anzi lo respinsero e si rivolsero con i loro cuori all'Egitto,
40 dicendo ad Aaronne: "Facci degli dèi che vadano davanti a noi, perché a questo Mosé che ci ha condotti fuori dal paese di Egitto non sappiamo che cosa sia accaduto".
41 E in quei giorni fecero un vitello, offrirono un sacrificio all'idolo e si rallegrarono nell'opera delle loro mani.
42 Allora Dio si ritrasse e li lasciò servire all'esercito del cielo, com'è scritto nel libro dei profeti: "Casa d'Israele, mi avete voi offerto sacrifici e olocausti per quarant'anni nel deserto?
43 Avete piuttosto portato la tenda di Molok e la stella del vostro dio Remfan, le immagini da voi fatte per adorarle; perciò io vi trasporterò al di là di Babilonia
44 Nel deserto i vostri padri avevano il tabernacolo della testimonianza, come aveva comandato colui che aveva detto a Mosé di farlo secondo il modello che aveva visto.
45 E i nostri padri, dopo averlo ricevuto, lo trasportarono con Giosué nel paese che era stato posseduto dai gentili, che Dio scacciò davanti ai nostri padri; e là rimase fino ai giorni di Davide,
46 il quale trovò grazia davanti a Dio e chiese di poter trovare una dimora per il Dio di Giacobbe.
47 Fu invece Salomone quello che gli edificò una casa.
48 Ma l'Altissimo non abita in templi fatti da mani d'uomo, come dice il profeta:
49 "Il cielo è il mio trono e la terra lo sgabello dei miei piedi; quale casa mi edifichereste voi, dice il Signore, o quale sarebbe il luogo del mio riposo?
50 Non ha la mia mano fatto tutte queste cose?"
51 Uomini di collo duro ed incirconcisi di cuore e di orecchi, voi resistete sempre allo Spirito Santo; come fecero i vostri padri, cosí fate anche voi.
52 Quale dei profeti non perseguitarono i padri vostri? Essi uccisero anche coloro che preannunciavano la venuta del Giusto, del quale ora voi siete divenuti traditori e uccisori;
53 voi che avete ricevuto la legge promulgata dagli angeli e non l'avete osservata!».
54 All'udire queste cose, essi fremevano in cuor loro e digrignavano i denti contro di lui.
55 Ma egli, ripieno di Spirito Santo, fissati gli occhi al cielo, vide la gloria di Dio e Gesú che stava alla destra di Dio
56 e disse: «Ecco, io vedo i cieli aperti e il Figlio dell'uomo che sta alla destra di Dio».
57 Ma essi, mandando alte grida, si turarono gli orecchi e tutti insieme si avventarono sopra di lui;
58 e, cacciatolo fuori dalla città, lo lapidarono. E i testimoni deposero le loro vesti ai piedi di un giovane, chiamato Saulo.
59 Cosí lapidarono Stefano, che invocava Gesú e diceva: «Signor Gesú, ricevi il mio spirito».
60 Poi, postosi in ginocchio, gridò ad alta voce: «Signore, non imputare loro questo peccato». E, detto questo, si addormentò.

1 Then [a]said the chief Priest, Are these things so?
2 [b]And he said, Ye men, brethren, and Fathers, hearken, (A)That God of [c]glory appeared unto our father Abraham, while he was in [d]Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,
3 And said unto him, Come out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall show thee.
4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Haran. And after that his father was dead, God brought him from thence into this land, wherein ye now dwell,
5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, [e]no not the breadth of a foot: yet he [f]promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
6 But God spake thus, that his (B)seed should be a sojourner in a strange land: and that they should keep it in bondage, and entreat it evil [g]four hundred years.
7 But the nation to whom they shall be in bondage, will I judge, saith God: and after that, they shall come forth and serve me in this place.
8 (C)He gave him also the covenant of circumcision: and to Abraham begat(D)Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day: and Isaac begat (E)Jacob, and Jacob the twelve (F)Patriarchs.
9 [h]And the Patriarchs moved with envy, sold (G)Joseph into Egypt: but God was [i]with him,
10 And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and (H)gave him [j]favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt, and over his whole house.
11 ¶ Then came there a famine over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, that our fathers found no sustenance.
12 But when (I)Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent our fathers first:
13 (J)And at the second time Joseph was known of his brethren, and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
14 Then sent Joseph and caused his father to be brought, and all his kindred, even threescore and fifteen souls.
15 So (K)Jacob went down into Egypt, and he (L)died, and our fathers,
16 And were [k]removed into Shechem, and were put in the sepulcher, that Abraham had bought (M)for money of the sons of Hamor, son of Shechem.
17 But when the time of the promise drew near, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people (N)grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18 Till another King arose, which knew not Joseph.
19 The same [l]dealt subtly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, and made them to cast out their young children, that they should not remain alive.
20 (O)The same time was Moses born and was [m]acceptable unto God: which was nourished up in his father’s house three months.
21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
23 Now when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel.
24 (P)And when he saw one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged his quarrel that had the harm done to him, and smote the Egyptian.
25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood, that God by his hand should give them deliverance: but they understood it not.
26 (Q)And the next day, he showed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren: why do ye wrong one to another?
27 But he that did his neighbor wrong, thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a prince, and a judge over us?
28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou didst the Egyptian yesterday?
29 Then fled Moses at that saying, and was a stranger in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons.
30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the (R)wilderness of mount Sinai, an [n]Angel of the Lord in a flame of fire, in a bush.
31 And when Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to consider it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, saying,
32 I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold it.
33 Then the Lord said to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest, is holy ground.
34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people, which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them: and now come, and I will send thee into Egypt.
35 This Moses whom they forsook, saying, Who made thee a prince and a judge? the same God sent for a prince, and a deliverer by the [o]hand of the Angel which appeared to him in the bush.
36 He (S)brought them out, doing wonders, and miracles in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness (T)forty years.
37 [p]This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, (U)A Prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you, even of your brethren, like unto me: him shall ye hear.
38 (V)This is he that was in the Congregation, in the wilderness with the Angel, which spake to him in mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received the lively oracles to give unto us.
39 To whom our fathers would not obey, but refused, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
40 Saying unto Aaron, (W)Make us gods that may go before us: for we know not what is become of this Moses that brought us out of the land of Egypt.
41 And they made a [q]calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42 Then God turned himself away, and [r]gave them up to serve the [s]host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets, (X)O house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
43 And ye [t]took up the Tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures, which ye made to worship them: therefore I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
44 [u]Our fathers had the Tabernacle of [v]witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto (Y)Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
45 (Z)Which tabernacle also our fathers [w]received, and brought in with Jesus into the [x]possession of the Gentiles, which God drove out [y]before our fathers, unto the days of David:
46 (AA)Who found favor before God, and desired that he might find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
47 (AB)[z]But Solomon built him an house.
48 Howbeit the most High (AC)dwelleth not in temples made with hands, as saith the Prophet,
49 (AD)Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build for me, saith the Lord? or what place is it that I should rest in?
50 Hath not mine hand made all these things?
51 (AE)[aa]Ye stiff-necked and of [ab]uncircumcised hearts and ears, ye have always resisted the holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do you.
52 Which of the Prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them, which showed before of the coming of that Just, of whom ye are now the betrayers and murderers,
53 (AF)Which have received the law by the [ac]ordinance of Angels, and have not kept it.
54 [ad]But when they heard these things, their hearts brast for anger, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
55 [ae]But he being full of the holy Ghost, looked steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus [af]standing at the right hand of God,
56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens open, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.

59 And they stoned Stephen, who called on God, and said, Lord Jesus receive my spirit.

2 Estêvão respondeu: “Irmãos e pais, ouçam-me! O Deus glorioso apareceu a nosso antepassado Abraão na Mesopotâmia,[a] antes de ele se estabelecer em Harã,[b] 3 e lhe disse: ‘Deixe sua terra natal e seus parentes e vá para a terra que eu lhe mostrarei’.[c] 4 Então Abraão saiu da terra dos caldeus e morou em Harã até seu pai morrer. Depois, Deus o trouxe aqui para a terra onde vocês agora vivem.
5 “Mas Deus não lhe deu herança alguma aqui, nem mesmo o espaço de um pé. Contudo, prometeu que a terra toda pertenceria a Abraão e a seus descendentes, embora ele ainda não tivesse filhos. 6 Disse-lhe também que seus descendentes viveriam numa terra estrangeira, onde seriam escravizados e oprimidos por quatrocentos anos. 7 Mas Deus disse: ‘Eu castigarei a nação que os escravizar, e, por fim, sairão dali e me adorarão neste lugar’.[d]
8 “Naquele tempo, Deus deu a Abraão a aliança da circuncisão. Assim, quando seu filho Isaque nasceu, ele o circuncidou no oitavo dia. Essa prática continuou quando nasceu Jacó, filho de Isaque, e quando nasceram os doze filhos de Jacó, os patriarcas de Israel.
9 “Os patriarcas tiveram inveja de seu irmão José e o venderam como escravo para o Egito. Mas Deus estava com ele 10 e o livrou de todas as suas dificuldades. Deus concedeu a José favor e sabedoria diante do faraó, rei do Egito, e o faraó o nomeou governador de todo o Egito e administrador de seu palácio.
11 “Então veio uma fome sobre o Egito e sobre Canaã. Houve grande aflição, e nossos antepassados ficaram sem comida. 12 Jacó soube que ainda havia cereal no Egito e enviou seus filhos, nossos antepassados, para comprarem alimento. 13 Da segunda vez que foram, José revelou sua identidade a seus irmãos[e] e os apresentou ao faraó. 14 Depois, José mandou trazer para o Egito seu pai, Jacó, e todos os seus parentes, 75 pessoas ao todo. 15 Assim, Jacó foi para o Egito e ali morreu, bem como nossos antepassados. 16 Seus corpos foram levados para Siquém e sepultados no túmulo que Abraão havia comprado por um certo preço dos filhos de Hamor.
17 “Aproximando-se o tempo em que Deus cumpriria sua promessa a Abraão, nosso povo se multiplicou grandemente no Egito. 18 Então subiu ao trono do Egito um novo rei, que nada sabia a respeito de José. 19 Esse rei explorou e oprimiu nosso povo, forçando os pais a abandonarem seus filhos recém-nascidos, para que morressem.
20 “Por essa época, nasceu Moisés, um bebê especial aos olhos de Deus. Seus pais cuidaram dele em casa por três meses. 21 Quando tiveram de abandoná-lo, a filha do faraó o adotou e o criou como seu próprio filho. 22 Moisés foi educado em toda a sabedoria dos egípcios e era poderoso em palavras e ações.
23 “Certo dia, estando Moisés com quarenta anos, resolveu visitar seus parentes, o povo de Israel. 24 Ao ver um egípcio maltratando um israelita, defendeu o israelita e o vingou, matando o egípcio. 25 Imaginou que seus irmãos israelitas entenderiam que ele havia sido enviado por Deus para resgatá-los, mas isso não aconteceu.
26 “No dia seguinte, visitou-os novamente e viu dois homens de Israel brigando. Tentando agir como pacificador, disse a eles: ‘Homens, vocês são irmãos; por que brigam um com o outro?’.
27 “Mas o homem que era culpado empurrou Moisés e disse: ‘Quem o nomeou líder e juiz sobre nós? 28 Vai me matar como matou o egípcio ontem?’. 29 Quando Moisés ouviu isso, fugiu e foi viver como estrangeiro na terra de Midiã. Ali nasceram seus dois filhos.
30 “Quarenta anos depois, no deserto próximo ao monte Sinai, um anjo apareceu a Moisés nas chamas de um arbusto que queimava. 31 Quando Moisés viu aquilo, ficou admirado. Aproximando-se para observar melhor, ouviu a voz do Senhor, que disse: 32 ‘Eu sou o Deus de seus antepassados, o Deus de Abraão, de Isaque e de Jacó’. Moisés tremia de medo e não tinha coragem de olhar.
33 “Então o Senhor lhe disse: ‘Tire as sandálias, pois você está pisando em terra santa. 34 Por certo, tenho visto a aflição do meu povo no Egito. Tenho ouvido seus gemidos e desci para libertá-los. Agora vá, pois eu o envio de volta ao Egito’.[f]
35 “Era esse o mesmo Moisés que o povo havia rejeitado quando lhe perguntaram: ‘Quem o nomeou líder e juiz?’. Por meio do anjo que apareceu a Moisés no arbusto em chamas, Deus o enviou para ser líder e libertador. 36 Assim, com muitas maravilhas e sinais, ele os conduziu para fora do Egito, pelo mar Vermelho e pelo deserto, durante quarenta anos.
37 “Esse mesmo Moisés disse ao povo de Israel: ‘Deus levantará para vocês um profeta como eu do meio de seu povo’.[g] 38 Moisés estava com nossos antepassados, a congregação do povo de Deus no deserto, quando o anjo lhe falou no monte Sinai, e ali Moisés recebeu palavras que dão vida, para transmiti-las a nós.
39 “Mas nossos antepassados se recusaram a obedecer a Moisés. Eles o rejeitaram e, em seu íntimo, voltaram ao Egito. 40 Disseram a Arão: ‘Faça para nós deuses que nos guiem, pois não sabemos o que aconteceu com esse Moisés que nos tirou do Egito’.[h] 41 Logo, fizeram um ídolo em forma de bezerro, ofereceram-lhe sacrifícios e começaram a celebrar o objeto que haviam criado. 42 Então Deus se afastou deles e os entregou para servirem as estrelas do céu como deuses, conforme está escrito no livro dos profetas:
‘Foi a mim que vocês trouxeram sacrifícios e ofertas
durante aqueles quarenta anos no deserto, povo de Israel?
43 Não, vocês carregaram o santuário de Moloque,
a estrela de seu deus Renfã,
e as imagens que fizeram para adorá-los.
Por isso eu os enviarei para o exílio,
para além da Babilônia’.[i]
44 “Nossos antepassados levaram com eles pelo deserto o tabernáculo,[j] construído de acordo com o modelo que Deus havia mostrado a Moisés. 45 Anos depois, quando Josué comandou nossos antepassados nas batalhas contra as nações que Deus expulsou desta terra, foi levado com eles para seu novo território e ali ficou até o tempo do rei Davi.
46 “Davi encontrou favor diante de Deus e pediu para construir um templo permanente para o Deus de Jacó,[k] 47 mas foi Salomão quem o construiu. 48 O Altíssimo, porém, não habita em templos feitos por mãos humanas. Como diz o profeta:
49 ‘O céu é meu trono,
e a terra é o suporte de meus pés.
Acaso construiriam para mim um templo assim tão bom?’,
diz o Senhor.
‘Que lugar de descanso me poderiam fazer?
50 Acaso não foram minhas mãos
que criaram o céu e a terra?’.[l]
51 “Povo teimoso! Vocês têm o coração incircuncidado e são surdos para a verdade. Resistirão para sempre ao Espírito Santo? Foi o que seus antepassados fizeram, e vocês também o fazem! 52 Que profeta seus antepassados não perseguiram? Mataram até aqueles que predisseram a vinda do Justo, a quem vocês traíram e assassinaram! 53 Vocês desobedeceram à lei de Deus, embora a tenham recebido das mãos de anjos”.
54 Os líderes judeus se enfureceram com a acusação de Estêvão e rangiam os dentes contra ele. 55 Mas Estêvão, cheio do Espírito Santo, olhou firmemente para o céu e viu a glória de Deus, e viu Jesus em pé no lugar de honra, à direita de Deus. 56 “Olhem!”, disse ele. “Vejo os céus abertos e o Filho do Homem em pé no lugar de honra, à direita de Deus!”
57 Eles taparam os ouvidos e, aos gritos, lançaram-se contra ele. 58 Arrastaram-no para fora da cidade e começaram a apedrejá-lo. Seus acusadores tiraram os mantos e os deixaram aos pés de um jovem chamado Saulo.
59 Enquanto atiravam as pedras, Estêvão orou: “Senhor Jesus, recebe o meu espírito”. 60 Então caiu de joelhos e gritou: “Senhor, não os culpes por este pecado!”. E, com isso, adormeceu.
