Il discorso di Stefano
7 Gli disse allora il sommo sacerdote: «Queste cose stanno proprio così?». 2 Ed egli rispose: «Fratelli e padri, ascoltate: il Dio della gloria apparve al nostro padre Abramo quando era ancora in Mesopotamia, prima che egli si stabilisse in Carran, 3 e gli disse: Esci dalla tua terra e dalla tua gente e và nella terra che io ti indicherò. 4 Allora, uscito dalla terra dei Caldei, si stabilì in Carran; di là, dopo la morte del padre, Dio lo fece emigrare in questo paese dove voi ora abitate, 5 ma non gli diede alcuna proprietà in esso, neppure quanto l'orma di un piede, ma gli promise di darlo in possesso a lui e alla sua discendenza dopo di lui, sebbene non avesse ancora figli. 6 Poi Dio parlò così: La discendenza di Abramo sarà pellegrina in terra straniera, tenuta in schiavitù e oppressione per quattrocento anni. 7 Ma del popolo di cui saranno schiavi io farò giustizia, disse Dio: dopo potranno uscire e mi adoreranno in questo luogo. 8 E gli diede l'alleanza della circoncisione. E così Abramo generò Isacco e lo circoncise l'ottavo giorno e Isacco generò Giacobbe e Giacobbe i dodici patriarchi. 9 Ma i patriarchi, gelosi di Giuseppe, lo vendettero schiavo in Egitto. Dio però era con lui 10 e lo liberò da tutte le sue afflizioni e gli diede grazia e saggezza davanti al faraone re d'Egitto, il quale lo nominò amministratore dell'Egitto e di tutta la sua casa. 11 Venne una carestia su tutto l'Egitto e in Canaan e una grande miseria, e i nostri padri non trovavano da mangiare. 12 Avendo udito Giacobbe che in Egitto c'era del grano, vi inviò i nostri padri una prima volta; 13 la seconda volta Giuseppe si fece riconoscere dai suoi fratelli e fu nota al faraone la sua origine. 14 Giuseppe allora mandò a chiamare Giacobbe suo padre e tutta la sua parentela, settantacinque persone in tutto. 15 E Giacobbe si recò in Egitto, e qui egli morì come anche i nostri padri; 16 essi furono poi trasportati in Sichem e posti nel sepolcro che Abramo aveva acquistato e pagato in denaro dai figli di Emor, a Sichem.
17 Mentre si avvicinava il tempo della promessa fatta da Dio ad Abramo, il popolo crebbe e si moltiplicò in Egitto, 18 finché salì al trono d'Egitto un altro re, che non conosceva Giuseppe. 19 Questi, adoperando l'astuzia contro la nostra gente, perseguitò i nostri padri fino a costringerli a esporre i loro figli, perché non sopravvivessero. 20 In quel tempo nacque Mosè e piacque a Dio; egli fu allevato per tre mesi nella casa paterna, poi, 21 essendo stato esposto, lo raccolse la figlia del faraone e lo allevò come figlio. 22 Così Mosè venne istruito in tutta la sapienza degli Egiziani ed era potente nelle parole e nelle opere. 23 Quando stava per compiere i quarant'anni, gli venne l'idea di far visita ai suoi fratelli, i figli di Israele, 24 e vedendone uno trattato ingiustamente, ne prese le difese e vendicò l'oppresso, uccidendo l'Egiziano. 25 Egli pensava che i suoi connazionali avrebbero capito che Dio dava loro salvezza per mezzo suo, ma essi non compresero. 26 Il giorno dopo si presentò in mezzo a loro mentre stavano litigando e si adoperò per metterli d'accordo, dicendo: Siete fratelli; perché vi insultate l'un l'altro? 27 Ma quello che maltrattava il vicino lo respinse, dicendo: Chi ti ha nominato capo e giudice sopra di noi? 28 Vuoi forse uccidermi, come hai ucciso ieri l'Egiziano? 29 Fuggì via Mosè a queste parole, e andò ad abitare nella terra di Madian, dove ebbe due figli.
30 Passati quarant'anni, gli apparve nel deserto del monte Sinai un angelo, in mezzo alla fiamma di un roveto ardente. 31 Mosè rimase stupito di questa visione; e mentre si avvicinava per veder meglio, si udì la voce del Signore: 32 Io sono il Dio dei tuoi padri, il Dio di Abramo, di Isacco e di Giacobbe. Esterrefatto, Mosè non osava guardare. 33 Allora il Signore gli disse: Togliti dai piedi i calzari, perché il luogo in cui stai è terra santa. 34 Ho visto l'afflizione del mio popolo in Egitto, ho udito il loro gemito e sono sceso a liberarli; ed ora vieni, che ti mando in Egitto. 35 Questo Mosè che avevano rinnegato dicendo: Chi ti ha nominato capo e giudice?, proprio lui Dio aveva mandato per esser capo e liberatore, parlando per mezzo dell'angelo che gli era apparso nel roveto. 36 Egli li fece uscire, compiendo miracoli e prodigi nella terra d'Egitto, nel Mare Rosso, e nel deserto per quarant'anni. 37 Egli è quel Mosè che disse ai figli d'Israele: Dio vi farà sorgere un profeta tra i vostri fratelli, al pari di me. 38 Egli è colui che, mentre erano radunati nel deserto, fu mediatore tra l'angelo che gli parlava sul monte Sinai e i nostri padri; egli ricevette parole di vita da trasmettere a noi. 39 Ma i nostri padri non vollero dargli ascolto, lo respinsero e si volsero in cuor loro verso l'Egitto, 40 dicendo ad Aronne: Fà per noi una divinità che ci vada innanzi, perché a questo Mosè che ci condusse fuori dall'Egitto non sappiamo che cosa sia accaduto. 41 E in quei giorni fabbricarono un vitello e offrirono sacrifici all'idolo e si rallegrarono per l'opera delle loro mani. 42 Ma Dio si ritrasse da loro e li abbandonò al culto dell'esercito del cielo, come è scritto nel libro dei Profeti:
43 Mi avete forse offerto vittime e sacrifici
per quarant'anni nel deserto, o casa d'Israele?
Avete preso con voi la tenda di Mòloch,
e la stella del dio Refàn,
simulacri che vi siete fabbricati per adorarli!
Perciò vi deporterò al di là di Babilonia.
44 I nostri padri avevano nel deserto la tenda della testimonianza, come aveva ordinato colui che disse a Mosè di costruirla secondo il modello che aveva visto. 45 E dopo averla ricevuta, i nostri padri con Giosuè se la portarono con sé nella conquista dei popoli che Dio scacciò davanti a loro, fino ai tempi di Davide. 46 Questi trovò grazia innanzi a Dio e domandò di poter trovare una dimora per il Dio di Giacobbe; 47 Salomone poi gli edificò una casa. 48 Ma l'Altissimo non abita in costruzioni fatte da mano d'uomo, come dice il Profeta:
49 Il cielo è il mio trono
e la terra sgabello per i miei piedi.
Quale casa potrete edificarmi, dice il Signore,
o quale sarà il luogo del mio riposo?
50 Non forse la mia mano ha creato tutte queste cose?
51 O gente testarda e pagana nel cuore e nelle orecchie, voi sempre opponete resistenza allo Spirito Santo; come i vostri padri, così anche voi. 52 Quale dei profeti i vostri padri non hanno perseguitato? Essi uccisero quelli che preannunciavano la venuta del Giusto, del quale voi ora siete divenuti traditori e uccisori; 53 voi che avete ricevuto la legge per mano degli angeli e non l'avete osservata».
54 All'udire queste cose, fremevano in cuor loro e digrignavano i denti contro di lui.
Lapidazione di Stefano. Saulo persecutore
55 Ma Stefano, pieno di Spirito Santo, fissando gli occhi al cielo, vide la gloria di Dio e Gesù che stava alla sua destra 56 e disse: «Ecco, io contemplo i cieli aperti e il Figlio dell'uomo che sta alla destra di Dio». 57 Proruppero allora in grida altissime turandosi gli orecchi; poi si scagliarono tutti insieme contro di lui, 58 lo trascinarono fuori della città e si misero a lapidarlo. E i testimoni deposero il loro mantello ai piedi di un giovane, chiamato Saulo. 59 E così lapidavano Stefano mentre pregava e diceva: «Signore Gesù, accogli il mio spirito». 60 Poi piegò le ginocchia e gridò forte: «Signore, non imputar loro questo peccato». Detto questo, morì.

La Nuova Diodati
7 Allora il sommo sacerdote gli disse: «Stanno queste cose proprio cosí?».
2 Egli disse: «Fratelli e padri, ascoltate. Il Dio della gloria apparve ad Abrahamo, nostro padre, mentre egli era in Mesopotamia, prima che abitasse in Carran.
3 e gli disse: "Usci dal tuo paese e dal tuo parentado e va' nel paese che io ti mostrerò".
4 Allora egli uscí dal paese dei Caldei e abitò in Carran; di là, dopo che suo padre morí, Dio lo fece venire in questo paese, nel quale ora voi abitate.
5 E non gli diede alcuna eredità, neppure lo spazio per posarvi un piede. Ma promise di darlo in proprietà a lui e alla sua progenie dopo di lui, quand'egli non aveva ancora alcun figlio.
6 E Dio parlò cosí: che la sua progenie dimorerebbe come forestiera in paese straniero, e che là sarebbe tenuta in schiavitú e maltrattata quattrocento anni.
7 Ma Dio aggiunse: "Io giudicherò la nazione alla quale avranno servito; e dopo ciò, essi usciranno e mi serviranno in questo luogo".
8 Poi gli diede il patto della circoncisione. E cosí Abrahamo generò Isacco e lo circoncise nell'ottavo giorno Isacco generò Giacobbe, e Giacobbe i dodici patriarchi.
9 I patriarchi, portando invidia a Giuseppe, lo vendettero perché fosse condotto in Egitto, ma Dio era con lui;
10 e lo liberò da tutte le sue tribolazioni e gli diede grazia e sapienza davanti al Faraone, re di Egitto, il quale lo costituí governatore sull'Egitto e su tutta la sua casa.
11 Or sopravvenne una carestia e una grande calamità in tutto il paese d'Egitto e di Canaan, e i nostri padri non trovavano viveri.
12 Ma Giacobbe, saputo che in Egitto c'era del grano, vi mandò una prima volta i nostri padri.
13 La seconda volta Giuseppe si fece riconoscere dai suoi fratelli e fu svelata al Faraone la parentela di Giuseppe.
14 Allora Giuseppe mandò a chiamare suo padre Giacobbe e tutto il suo parentado, in tutto settantacinque persone.
15 Giacobbe scese in Egitto, dove morí lui e i nostri padri.
16 Essi furono poi trasportati a Sichema e posti nel sepolcro, che Abrahamo aveva comprato a prezzo d'argento dai figli di Emor, padre di Sichem.
17 Ora, mentre si avvicinava il tempo della promessa che Dio aveva giurata ad Abrahamo, il popolo crebbe e si moltiplicò a in Egitto,
18 finché sorse in Egitto un altro re che non aveva conosciuto Giuseppe.
19 Questi, usando malizia contro la nostra stirpe, maltrattò i nostri padri fino a far esporre i loro bambini, perché non sopravvivessero.
20 In quel tempo nacque Mosé, ed era bello agli occhi di Dio; egli fu nutrito per tre mesi in casa di suo padre.
21 E, quando fu esposto, la figlia del Faraone lo raccolse e lo allevò come suo figlio.
22 Cosí Mosé fu istruito in tutta la sapienza degli Egiziani, ed era potente in parole ed opere.
23 Ma, quando giunse all'età di quarant'anni, gli venne in cuore di andare a visitare i suoi fratelli: i figli d'Israele.
24 E, vedendone uno che subiva un torto, lo difese e vendicò l'oppresso, uccidendo l'Egiziano.
25 Or egli pensava che i suoi fratelli avrebbero capito che Dio stava per dar loro liberazione per mezzo suo, ma essi non compresero.
26 Il giorno seguente egli comparve in mezzo a loro, mentre litigavano e li esortò alla pace, dicendo: "O uomini, voi siete fratelli, perché vi fate torto l'un l'altro?".
27 Ma colui che faceva torto al suo vicino lo respinse, dicendo: "Chi ti ha costituito principe e giudice su di noi?
28 Vuoi uccidere me, come ieri hai ucciso l'Egiziano?".
29 A queste parole Mosé fuggí e dimorò come forestiero nel paese Dimadian dove generò due figli.
30 Passati quarant'anni, l'angelo del Signore gli apparve nel deserto del monte Sinai, nella fiamma di fuoco di un roveto,
31 Alla vista di ciò, Mosé rimase stupito di quel che vedeva, e come si avvicinava per osservare, udì la voce del Signore,
32 che diceva: "Io sono il Dio dei tuoi padri, il Dio di Abrahamo, il Dio di Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe". Ma Mosé, tremando tutto, non ardiva alzare lo sguardo.
33 Allora il Signore gli disse: "Togliti i calzari dai piedi, perché il luogo sul quale stai è terra santa.
34 Ho certamente visto l'afflizione del mio popolo in Egitto e ho udito i loro sospiri, e sono disceso per liberarli; or dunque vieni, io ti manderò in Egitto".
35 Quel Mosé che avevano rifiutato, di cendo: "Chi ti ha costituito principe e giudice?". Quello mandò loro Dio come capo e liberatore, per mezzo dell'angelo che gli era apparso nel roveto.
36 Egli li condusse fuori, operando segni e prodigi nel paese di Egitto, nel Mar Rosso e nel deserto, per quarant'anni.
37 Questi è quel Mosé che disse ai figli d'Israele: Il Signore Dio vostro susciterà per voi, tra i vostri fratelli, un profeta come me. Ascoltatelo!.
38 Questi è colui che nell'assemblea nel deserto fu con l'angelo che gli parlava sul monte Sinai e con i nostri padri; e ricevette le parole viventi per trasmetterle a noi.
39 A lui i padri nostri non vollero ubbidire; anzi lo respinsero e si rivolsero con i loro cuori all'Egitto,
40 dicendo ad Aaronne: "Facci degli dèi che vadano davanti a noi, perché a questo Mosé che ci ha condotti fuori dal paese di Egitto non sappiamo che cosa sia accaduto".
41 E in quei giorni fecero un vitello, offrirono un sacrificio all'idolo e si rallegrarono nell'opera delle loro mani.
42 Allora Dio si ritrasse e li lasciò servire all'esercito del cielo, com'è scritto nel libro dei profeti: "Casa d'Israele, mi avete voi offerto sacrifici e olocausti per quarant'anni nel deserto?
43 Avete piuttosto portato la tenda di Molok e la stella del vostro dio Remfan, le immagini da voi fatte per adorarle; perciò io vi trasporterò al di là di Babilonia
44 Nel deserto i vostri padri avevano il tabernacolo della testimonianza, come aveva comandato colui che aveva detto a Mosé di farlo secondo il modello che aveva visto.
45 E i nostri padri, dopo averlo ricevuto, lo trasportarono con Giosué nel paese che era stato posseduto dai gentili, che Dio scacciò davanti ai nostri padri; e là rimase fino ai giorni di Davide,
46 il quale trovò grazia davanti a Dio e chiese di poter trovare una dimora per il Dio di Giacobbe.
47 Fu invece Salomone quello che gli edificò una casa.
48 Ma l'Altissimo non abita in templi fatti da mani d'uomo, come dice il profeta:
49 "Il cielo è il mio trono e la terra lo sgabello dei miei piedi; quale casa mi edifichereste voi, dice il Signore, o quale sarebbe il luogo del mio riposo?
50 Non ha la mia mano fatto tutte queste cose?"
51 Uomini di collo duro ed incirconcisi di cuore e di orecchi, voi resistete sempre allo Spirito Santo; come fecero i vostri padri, cosí fate anche voi.
52 Quale dei profeti non perseguitarono i padri vostri? Essi uccisero anche coloro che preannunciavano la venuta del Giusto, del quale ora voi siete divenuti traditori e uccisori;
53 voi che avete ricevuto la legge promulgata dagli angeli e non l'avete osservata!».
54 All'udire queste cose, essi fremevano in cuor loro e digrignavano i denti contro di lui.
55 Ma egli, ripieno di Spirito Santo, fissati gli occhi al cielo, vide la gloria di Dio e Gesú che stava alla destra di Dio
56 e disse: «Ecco, io vedo i cieli aperti e il Figlio dell'uomo che sta alla destra di Dio».
57 Ma essi, mandando alte grida, si turarono gli orecchi e tutti insieme si avventarono sopra di lui;
58 e, cacciatolo fuori dalla città, lo lapidarono. E i testimoni deposero le loro vesti ai piedi di un giovane, chiamato Saulo.
59 Cosí lapidarono Stefano, che invocava Gesú e diceva: «Signor Gesú, ricevi il mio spirito».
60 Poi, postosi in ginocchio, gridò ad alta voce: «Signore, non imputare loro questo peccato». E, detto questo, si addormentò.

Stephen’s Speech
7 The high priest said to Stephen, “Are these ·things [charges] true?”
2 Stephen answered, “Brothers [L Men, brothers] and fathers, listen to me. ·Our glorious God [The God of glory] appeared to Abraham, our ·ancestor [patriarch; L father], in Mesopotamia before he lived in Haran [C a city in Syria where Abraham resided before reaching the Promised Land; Gen. 11:31]. 3 God said to Abraham, ‘Leave your country and your relatives, and go to the land I will show you [Gen. 12:1].’ 4 So Abraham left the ·country [land] of Chaldea [C another name for southern Mesopotamia, the location of Ur] and went to live in Haran. After Abraham’s father [C Terah] died, God sent him to this place where you now live. 5 God did not give Abraham ·any of this land [L an inheritance in it], not even a ·foot of it [L a foot’s length]. But God promised that he would give this land to him [L as a possession] and his ·descendants [L seed; Gen. 12:2], even before Abraham had a child. 6 This is what God said to him: ‘Your ·descendants [L seed] will be ·strangers [foreigners; resident aliens] in a ·land they don’t own [foreign land; land belonging to others; C Egypt]. The people there will make them slaves and will ·mistreat [oppress] them for four hundred years. 7 But I will ·punish [judge] the nation where they are slaves. Then ·your descendants [L they] will leave that land and will worship me in this place [Gen. 15:13–14; Ex. 3:12].’ 8 God made an ·agreement [covenant; C a treaty-like relationship] with Abraham, the sign of which was circumcision [Gen. 17:9–14]. And so when Abraham ·had his son [became the father of; T begat] Isaac, Abraham circumcised him when he was eight days old. Isaac ·also circumcised his son Jacob [or became the father of Jacob], and Jacob ·did the same for his sons, [or became the father of] the twelve ·ancestors of our people [patriarchs; C the twelve sons of Jacob who were the “fathers” of the twelve tribes of Israel].
9 “·Jacob’s sons [L The patriarchs] became jealous of Joseph and sold him to be a slave in Egypt. But God was with him 10 and ·saved [rescued; delivered] him from all his ·troubles [afflictions]. God gave Joseph ·wisdom to gain the favor of [L favor and wisdom before] Pharaoh, king of Egypt. The king made him governor of Egypt and put him in charge of ·all the people in his palace [L his whole household].
11 “Then all the land of Egypt and Canaan experienced a famine, and the people suffered very much. ·Jacob’s sons, our ancestors, [L Our fathers] could not find anything to eat. 12 But when Jacob heard there was grain in Egypt, he sent ·his sons [L our fathers] there. This was their first trip to Egypt [Gen. 42]. 13 When they went there a second time [Gen. 43—45], Joseph ·told his brothers who he was [made himself known to his brothers], and ·the king [L Pharaoh] learned about Joseph’s family. 14 Then Joseph sent messengers to ·invite [summon; call] Jacob, his father, to come to Egypt along with all his relatives (seventy-five persons altogether). 15 So Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and ·his sons [L our fathers] died. 16 Later their bodies were moved to Shechem and put in a grave there. (It was the same grave Abraham had bought for a sum of ·money [L silver] from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.) 17 “The promise God made to Abraham [Gen. 15:12–16] was soon to come true, and the number of people in Egypt ·grew large [L increased/flourished and multiplied]. 18 Then ·a new [L another] king, who ·did not know who Joseph was [or did not think Joseph was important], ·began to rule Egypt [L arose; Ex. 1:8]. 19 This king ·tricked [exploited; dealt treacherously with] our ·people [L race] and was cruel to our ·ancestors [L fathers], forcing them to ·leave [L expose; abandon] their babies outside to die [C such abandonment was a common ancient method of population control]. 20 At this time Moses was born, and he was ·very beautiful [beautiful before/to God; or of high status in God’s eyes]. For three months Moses was cared for in his father’s house. 21 When ·they put Moses outside [L he was abandoned/exposed; C when Moses’ mother “exposed” Moses to the elements, she was actually hiding him; Ex. 2:3–4], ·the king’s [L Pharaoh’s] daughter adopted him and raised him as if he were her own son. 22 ·The Egyptians taught Moses everything they knew [L So Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians], and he was a powerful man in ·what he said and did [L his words and actions].
23 “When Moses was about forty years old, ·he thought it would be good [L it rose up in his heart] to visit his own ·people [relatives; L brothers (and sisters)], the ·people [L sons; children] of Israel. 24 Moses saw an Egyptian ·mistreating [wronging] one of his people, so he defended the ·Israelite [L oppressed man] and ·punished the Egyptian by killing him [L avenged him by striking down the Egyptian; Ex. 2:11–12]. 25 Moses ·thought [assumed] his own ·people [relatives; L brothers (and sisters)] would understand that God was using him to save them, but they did not. 26 The next day when Moses saw two men of Israel fighting, he tried to ·make peace between [reconcile] them. He said, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you ·hurting [wronging] each other?’ 27 The man who was ·hurting [wronging] ·the other [L his neighbor] pushed Moses away and said, ‘Who made you our ruler and judge? 28 ·Are you going [or Do you want] to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday [Ex. 2:14]?’ 29 When Moses heard him say this, he ·left Egypt [L fled] and went to live in the land of Midian [C a land without distinct borders centered in northwestern Arabia] where he was a ·stranger [foreigner; resident alien; Ex. 2:15–25]. While Moses lived in Midian, he had two sons.
30 “Forty years later an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush as he was in the ·desert [wilderness] near Mount Sinai [Ex. 3]. 31 When Moses saw this, he was amazed [L at the sight/vision] and went near to look closer. Moses heard the Lord’s voice say, 32 ‘I am the God of your ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers], the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob [Ex. 3:6].’ Moses began to ·shake [tremble] with fear and ·was afraid [did not dare] to look. 33 The Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground. 34 I have [surely; indeed] seen the ·troubles [wrongs; mistreatment; oppression] my people have suffered in Egypt. I have heard their ·cries [groans] and have come down to ·save [rescue; deliver] them. And now, Moses, I am sending you back to Egypt [Ex. 3:5, 7–8, 10].’
35 “This Moses was the same man the two men of Israel rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge [Ex. 2:14; C compare the rejection of Jesus in v. 52]?’ This same man God sent to be a ruler and ·savior [rescuer; liberator; redeemer], with the ·help [L hand] of the angel that ·Moses saw [L appeared to him] in the burning bush. 36 ·So Moses [L This man] led the people out of Egypt. He worked ·miracles [wonders] and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea [C the Hebrew OT calls it the Sea of Reeds; the Septuagint (the Greek OT) calls it the Red Sea; Ex. 13:18; 15:4], and then in the ·desert [wilderness] for forty years. 37 This is the same Moses that said to the ·people [L sons; children] of Israel, ‘God will ·give [L raise up for] you a prophet like me, ·who is one of your own ·people [L from among your brothers; Deut. 18:15].’ 38 This is the Moses who was with the ·gathering of the Israelites [assembly; congregation] in the ·desert [wilderness]. He was with the angel that spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and he was with our ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers]. He received ·commands from God that give life [life-giving messages; or living oracles], and he gave those commands to us [Ex. 19—24].
39 “But our ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers] did not want to obey Moses. They ·rejected him [pushed him away] and ·wanted to go [L in their hearts turned] back to Egypt. 40 They said to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will ·lead [L go before] us. Moses led us out of Egypt, but we don’t know what has happened to him [Ex. 32:1].’ 41 So [L in those days] the people made an idol that looked like a calf. Then they ·brought [or offered up] sacrifices to it and ·were proud of [celebrated; L rejoiced about] what they had made with their own hands. 42 But God turned ·against [or away from] them and did not try to stop them from worshiping the ·sun, moon, and stars [L host of heaven]. This is what is written in the book of the prophets: God says,
‘·People [L House] of Israel, you did not ·bring [offer up to] me sacrifices and offerings
while you traveled in the ·desert [wilderness] for forty years.
43 You have carried with you
the tent to worship Molech [C a pagan deity; Lev. 18:21; 20:2–5]
and the idols of ·the star god [or the star of your god] Rephan [C a pagan deity, perhaps associated with the planet Saturn] that you made to worship.
So I will send you away [C into exile] beyond Babylon [Amos 5:25–27].’
44 “The ·Holy Tent [L Tent/T Tabernacle of Testimony/Witness] where God spoke to our ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers] was with them in the ·desert [wilderness]. God told Moses how to make this ·Tent [T Tabernacle], and he made it like the ·plan [pattern] God showed him [Ex. 25—31]. 45 Later, Joshua led our ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers] to ·capture [take possession of] the lands of the other nations. Our people went in, and God forced the other people out [Josh. 1—12]. When our people went into this new land, they took with them this same ·Tent [T Tabernacle] they had received from their ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers]. They kept it until the time of David, 46 who ·pleased [L found favor with] God and asked God to ·let him build a house [L find a dwelling place] for him, the God of Jacob[a] [2 Sam. 7]. 47 But Solomon was the one who built ·the Temple [L a house for him; 1 Kin. 7—8].
48 “But the Most High does not live in houses that people build with their hands. As the prophet says:
49 ‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
·So do you think you can build a house [L What kind of house will you build] for me? says the Lord.
·Do I need a place to rest [L Or what is my resting place]?
50 ·Remember, my hand made [L Did not my hand make…?] all these things [Is. 66:1–2]!’”
51 Stephen continued speaking: “You ·stubborn [L stiff-necked] people! You have ·not given your hearts to God, nor will you listen to him [L uncircumcised hearts and ears]! You are always ·against [resisting] what the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you, just as your ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers] were. 52 Was there ever a prophet your ·ancestors [forefathers; fathers] did not ·try to hurt [persecute]? They even killed ·the prophets [L those] who ·predicted [foretold; announced beforehand] the coming of the ·One who is good [Righteous One; C Jesus the Messiah]. And now you have ·turned against [betrayed] and ·killed [murdered] the ·One who is good [Righteous One]. 53 You received the law of Moses, which God gave you through his angels [Gal. 3:19; Heb. 2:2], but you haven’t obeyed it.”
Stephen Is Killed
54 When the leaders heard this, they became furious [L in their hearts]. They were so mad they were ·grinding [gnashing] their teeth at Stephen. 55 But Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit. He looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God’s right ·side [or hand; C the place of highest honor beside a king]. 56 He said, “Look! I see heaven open and the Son of Man [C a title for the Messiah; Dan. 7:13–14] standing at God’s right ·side [or hand].” [C Normally portrayed as “sitting” at God’s right side (Ps. 110:1), Jesus is standing either to give testimony to Stephen’s faithfulness, or to welcome him into God’s presence.]
57 Then they shouted loudly and covered their ears and all ·ran [rushed together; or rushed with one intent] at Stephen. 58 They ·took [dragged] him out of the city and began to ·throw stones at him to kill [stone] him [C the customary way to execute a criminal]. And ·those who told lies against Stephen [or his accusers; those who provided testimony; L the witnesses] left their coats ·with [L at the feet of] a young man named Saul [C later known as Paul]. 59 While they were ·throwing stones [stoning him], Stephen ·prayed [L called out], “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 He fell on his knees and cried in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” After Stephen said this, he ·died [L fell asleep; C for believers death is temporary, like sleep].
