A Tessalonica. Difficoltà con i Giudei

17 Seguendo la via di Anfipoli e Apollonia, giunsero a Tessalonica, dove c'era una sinagoga dei Giudei. 2 Come era sua consuetudine Paolo vi andò e per tre sabati discusse con loro sulla base delle Scritture, 3 spiegandole e dimostrando che il Cristo doveva morire e risuscitare dai morti; il Cristo, diceva, è quel Gesù che io vi annunzio. 4 Alcuni di loro furono convinti e aderirono a Paolo e a Sila, come anche un buon numero di Greci credenti in Dio e non poche donne della nobiltà. 5 Ma i Giudei, ingelositi, trassero dalla loro parte alcuni pessimi individui di piazza e, radunata gente, mettevano in subbuglio la città. Presentatisi alla casa di Giasone, cercavano Paolo e Sila per condurli davanti al popolo. 6 Ma non avendoli trovati, trascinarono Giasone e alcuni fratelli dai capi della città gridando: «Quei tali che mettono il mondo in agitazione sono anche qui e Giasone li ha ospitati. 7 Tutti costoro vanno contro i decreti dell'imperatore, affermando che c'è un altro re, Gesù». 8 Così misero in agitazione la popolazione e i capi della città che udivano queste cose; 9 tuttavia, dopo avere ottenuto una cauzione da Giasone e dagli altri, li rilasciarono.

Nuove difficoltà a Berea

10 Ma i fratelli subito, durante la notte, fecero partire Paolo e Sila verso Berèa. Giunti colà entrarono nella sinagoga dei Giudei. 11 Questi erano di sentimenti più nobili di quelli di Tessalonica ed accolsero la parola con grande entusiasmo, esaminando ogni giorno le Scritture per vedere se le cose stavano davvero così. 12 Molti di loro credettero e anche alcune donne greche della nobiltà e non pochi uomini. 13 Ma quando i Giudei di Tessalonica vennero a sapere che anche a Berèa era stata annunziata da Paolo la parola di Dio, andarono anche colà ad agitare e sobillare il popolo. 14 Allora i fratelli fecero partire subito Paolo per la strada verso il mare, mentre Sila e Timòteo rimasero in città. 15 Quelli che scortavano Paolo lo accompagnarono fino ad Atene e se ne ripartirono con l'ordine per Sila e Timòteo di raggiungerlo al più presto.

Paolo ad Atene

16 Mentre Paolo li attendeva ad Atene, fremeva nel suo spirito al vedere la città piena di idoli. 17 Discuteva frattanto nella sinagoga con i Giudei e i pagani credenti in Dio e ogni giorno sulla piazza principale con quelli che incontrava. 18 Anche certi filosofi epicurei e stoici discutevano con lui e alcuni dicevano: «Che cosa vorrà mai insegnare questo ciarlatano?». E altri: «Sembra essere un annnunziatore di divinità straniere»; poiché annunziava Gesù e la risurrezione. 19 Presolo con sé, lo condussero sull'Areòpago e dissero: «Possiamo dunque sapere qual è questa nuova dottrina predicata da te? 20 Cose strane per vero ci metti negli orecchi; desideriamo dunque conoscere di che cosa si tratta». 21 Tutti gli Ateniesi infatti e gli stranieri colà residenti non avevano passatempo più gradito che parlare e sentir parlare.

Discorso di Paolo davanti all'Areopago

22 Allora Paolo, alzatosi in mezzo all'Areòpago, disse:

«Cittadini ateniesi, vedo che in tutto siete molto timorati degli dei. 23 Passando infatti e osservando i monumenti del vostro culto, ho trovato anche un'ara con l'iscrizione: Al Dio ignoto. Quello che voi adorate senza conoscere, io ve lo annunzio. 24 Il Dio che ha fatto il mondo e tutto ciò che contiene, che è signore del cielo e della terra, non dimora in templi costruiti dalle mani dell'uomo 25 né dalle mani dell'uomo si lascia servire come se avesse bisogno di qualche cosa, essendo lui che dà a tutti la vita e il respiro e ogni cosa. 26 Egli creò da uno solo tutte le nazioni degli uomini, perché abitassero su tutta la faccia della terra. Per essi ha stabilito l'ordine dei tempi e i confini del loro spazio, 27 perché cercassero Dio, se mai arrivino a trovarlo andando come a tentoni, benché non sia lontano da ciascuno di noi. 28 In lui infatti viviamo, ci muoviamo ed esistiamo, come anche alcuni dei vostri poeti hanno detto:

Poiché di lui stirpe noi siamo.

29 Essendo noi dunque stirpe di Dio, non dobbiamo pensare che la divinità sia simile all'oro, all'argento e alla pietra, che porti l'impronta dell'arte e dell'immaginazione umana. 30 Dopo esser passato sopra ai tempi dell'ignoranza, ora Dio ordina a tutti gli uomini di tutti i luoghi di ravvedersi, 31 poiché egli ha stabilito un giorno nel quale dovrà giudicare la terra con giustizia per mezzo di un uomo che egli ha designato, dandone a tutti prova sicura col risuscitarlo dai morti».

32 Quando sentirono parlare di risurrezione di morti, alcuni lo deridevano, altri dissero: «Ti sentiremo su questo un'altra volta». 33 Così Paolo uscì da quella riunione. 34 Ma alcuni aderirono a lui e divennero credenti, fra questi anche Dionigi membro dell'Areòpago, una donna di nome Dàmaris e altri con loro.

Pablo y Silas en Tesalónica

17 Después de pasar por Anfípolis y Apolonia, llegaron a Tesalónica(A), donde había una sinagoga de los judíos. 2 Y Pablo, según su costumbre(B), fue a ellos y por tres días de reposo[a](C) discutió con ellos basándose en las Escrituras(D), 3 explicando[b] y presentando[c] evidencia de que era necesario que el Cristo[d] padeciera(E) y resucitara de entre los muertos(F), y diciendo: Este Jesús, a quien yo os anuncio, es el Cristo[e](G). 4 Algunos de ellos creyeron, y se unieron(H) a Pablo y a Silas(I), juntamente con[f] una gran multitud de griegos(J) temerosos de Dios(K) y muchas[g] de las mujeres principales(L). 5 Pero los judíos, llenos de envidia, llevaron[h] algunos hombres malvados[i] de la plaza pública, organizaron una turba y alborotaron la ciudad(M); y asaltando la casa de Jasón(N), procuraban sacarlos al pueblo. 6 Al no encontrarlos, arrastraron a Jasón y a algunos de los hermanos ante las autoridades de la ciudad, gritando: Esos que han trastornado al mundo[j](O) han venido acá también(P); 7 y Jasón los[k] ha recibido(Q), y todos ellos actúan contra los decretos del César, diciendo que hay otro rey, Jesús(R). 8 Y alborotaron a la multitud y a las autoridades de la ciudad que oían esto. 9 Pero después de recibir una fianza de Jasón(S) y de los otros, los soltaron.

Pablo y Silas enviados a Berea

10 Enseguida los hermanos(T) enviaron de noche a Pablo y a Silas(U) a Berea(V), los cuales, al llegar, fueron a la sinagoga de los judíos(W). 11 Estos eran más nobles que los de Tesalónica(X), pues[l] recibieron la palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando diariamente las Escrituras, para ver si estas cosas eran así. 12 Por eso muchos de ellos creyeron(Y), así como también un buen número de[m] griegos, hombres y mujeres(Z) de distinción(AA). 13 Pero cuando los judíos de Tesalónica(AB) supieron que la palabra de Dios había sido proclamada por Pablo también en Berea(AC), fueron también allá para agitar y alborotar a las multitudes. 14 Entonces los hermanos(AD) inmediatamente enviaron a Pablo para que fuera hasta el mar; pero Silas(AE) y Timoteo(AF) se quedaron allí. 15 Los que conducían a Pablo(AG) lo llevaron hasta Atenas(AH); y después de recibir órdenes de que Silas y Timoteo(AI) se unieran[n] a él(AJ) lo más pronto posible, partieron.

16 Mientras Pablo los esperaba en Atenas(AK), su espíritu se enardecía[o] dentro de él al contemplar la ciudad llena de ídolos. 17 Así que discutía en la sinagoga(AL) con los judíos y con los gentiles temerosos de Dios(AM), y diariamente en la plaza con los que estuvieran presentes. 18 También disputaban con él algunos de los filósofos epicúreos y estoicos. Y algunos decían: ¿Qué quiere decir este palabrero[p](AN)? Y otros: Parece ser un predicador de divinidades extrañas[q] —porque les predicaba a[r] Jesús y la resurrección(AO). 19 Lo tomaron(AP) y lo llevaron al[s] Areópago[t](AQ), diciendo: ¿Podemos saber qué es esta nueva enseñanza(AR) que proclamas[u]? 20 Porque te oímos decir[v] cosas extrañas; por tanto, queremos saber qué significan. 21 (Pues todos los atenienses y los extranjeros de visita allí(AS), no pasaban el tiempo en otra cosa sino en decir o en oír algo nuevo.) 22 Entonces Pablo poniéndose en pie en medio del Areópago[w], dijo: Varones atenienses(AT), percibo que sois muy religiosos[x](AU) en todo sentido. 23 Porque mientras pasaba y observaba los objetos de vuestra adoración(AV), hallé también un altar con esta inscripción: AL[y] DIOS DESCONOCIDO. Pues lo que vosotros adoráis sin conocer(AW), eso os anuncio yo. 24 El Dios que hizo el mundo y todo lo que en él hay(AX), puesto que es Señor del cielo y de la tierra(AY), no mora en templos hechos por manos de hombres(AZ), 25 ni es servido por manos humanas, como si necesitara de algo(BA), puesto que Él da a todos vida y aliento y todas las cosas; 26 y de uno[z] hizo todas las naciones del mundo[aa](BB) para que habitaran sobre toda la faz de la tierra, habiendo determinado sus tiempos señalados y los límites de su habitación(BC), 27 para que buscaran a Dios, si de alguna manera, palpando, le hallen, aunque no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros(BD); 28 porque en Él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos[ab](BE), así como algunos de vuestros mismos poetas han dicho: «Porque también nosotros somos linaje suyo». 29 Siendo, pues, linaje de Dios, no debemos pensar que la naturaleza divina sea semejante a oro, plata o piedra, esculpidos por el[ac] arte y el pensamiento humano(BF). 30 Por tanto, habiendo pasado por alto los tiempos de ignorancia(BG), Dios declara ahora a todos los hombres, en todas partes, que se arrepientan(BH), 31 porque Él ha establecido un día en el cual juzgará(BI) al mundo[ad](BJ) en justicia, por medio de un Hombre(BK) a quien ha designado(BL), habiendo presentado pruebas a todos los hombres al resucitarle[ae] de entre los muertos(BM).

32 Y cuando oyeron de la resurrección de los muertos(BN), algunos se burlaban, pero otros dijeron: Te escucharemos otra[af] vez acerca de esto. 33 Entonces Pablo salió de entre ellos. 34 Pero algunos se unieron a él y creyeron, entre los cuales estaban[ag] Dionisio el areopagita(BO), una mujer llamada Dámaris y otros con ellos.

El alboroto en Tesalónica

17 Pasando por Anfípolis y Apolonia, llegaron a Tesalónica, donde había una sinagoga de los judíos. 2 Y Pablo, como acostumbraba, fue a ellos, y por tres días de reposo[a] discutió con ellos, 3 declarando y exponiendo por medio de las Escrituras, que era necesario que el Cristo padeciese, y resucitase de los muertos; y que Jesús, a quien yo os anuncio, decía él, es el Cristo. 4 Y algunos de ellos creyeron, y se juntaron con Pablo y con Silas; y de los griegos piadosos gran número, y mujeres nobles no pocas. 5 Entonces los judíos que no creían, teniendo celos, tomaron consigo a algunos ociosos, hombres malos, y juntando una turba, alborotaron la ciudad; y asaltando la casa de Jasón, procuraban sacarlos al pueblo. 6 Pero no hallándolos, trajeron a Jasón y a algunos hermanos ante las autoridades de la ciudad, gritando: Estos que trastornan el mundo entero también han venido acá; 7 a los cuales Jasón ha recibido; y todos estos contravienen los decretos de César, diciendo que hay otro rey, Jesús. 8 Y alborotaron al pueblo y a las autoridades de la ciudad, oyendo estas cosas. 9 Pero obtenida fianza de Jasón y de los demás, los soltaron.

10 Inmediatamente, los hermanos enviaron de noche a Pablo y a Silas hasta Berea. Y ellos, habiendo llegado, entraron en la sinagoga de los judíos. 11 Y estos eran más nobles que los que estaban en Tesalónica, pues recibieron la palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando cada día las Escrituras para ver si estas cosas eran así. 12 Así que creyeron muchos de ellos, y mujeres griegas de distinción, y no pocos hombres. 13 Cuando los judíos de Tesalónica supieron que también en Berea era anunciada la palabra de Dios por Pablo, fueron allá, y también alborotaron a las multitudes. 14 Pero inmediatamente los hermanos enviaron a Pablo que fuese hacia el mar; y Silas y Timoteo se quedaron allí. 15 Y los que se habían encargado de conducir a Pablo le llevaron a Atenas; y habiendo recibido orden para Silas y Timoteo, de que viniesen a él lo más pronto que pudiesen, salieron.

16 Mientras Pablo los esperaba en Atenas, su espíritu se enardecía viendo la ciudad entregada a la idolatría. 17 Así que discutía en la sinagoga con los judíos y piadosos, y en la plaza cada día con los que concurrían. 18 Y algunos filósofos de los epicúreos y de los estoicos disputaban con él; y unos decían: ¿Qué querrá decir este palabrero? Y otros: Parece que es predicador de nuevos dioses; porque les predicaba el evangelio de Jesús, y de la resurrección. 19 Y tomándole, le trajeron al Areópago, diciendo: ¿Podremos saber qué es esta nueva enseñanza de que hablas? 20 Pues traes a nuestros oídos cosas extrañas. Queremos, pues, saber qué quiere decir esto. 21 (Porque todos los atenienses y los extranjeros residentes allí, en ninguna otra cosa se interesaban sino en decir o en oír algo nuevo.)

22 Entonces Pablo, puesto en pie en medio del Areópago, dijo: Varones atenienses, en todo observo que sois muy religiosos; 23 porque pasando y mirando vuestros santuarios, hallé también un altar en el cual estaba esta inscripción: AL DIOS NO CONOCIDO. Al que vosotros adoráis, pues, sin conocerle, es a quien yo os anuncio. 24 El Dios que hizo el mundo y todas las cosas que en él hay, siendo Señor del cielo y de la tierra, no habita en templos hechos por manos humanas, 25 ni es honrado por manos de hombres, como si necesitase de algo; pues él es quien da a todos vida y aliento y todas las cosas.(A) 26 Y de una sangre ha hecho todo el linaje de los hombres, para que habiten sobre toda la faz de la tierra; y les ha prefijado el orden de los tiempos, y los límites de su habitación; 27 para que busquen a Dios, si en alguna manera, palpando, puedan hallarle, aunque ciertamente no está lejos de cada uno de nosotros. 28 Porque en él vivimos, y nos movemos, y somos; como algunos de vuestros propios poetas también han dicho: Porque linaje suyo somos. 29 Siendo, pues, linaje de Dios, no debemos pensar que la Divinidad sea semejante a oro, o plata, o piedra, escultura de arte y de imaginación de hombres. 30 Pero Dios, habiendo pasado por alto los tiempos de esta ignorancia, ahora manda a todos los hombres en todo lugar, que se arrepientan; 31 por cuanto ha establecido un día en el cual juzgará al mundo con justicia, por aquel varón a quien designó, dando fe a todos con haberle levantado de los muertos.

32 Pero cuando oyeron lo de la resurrección de los muertos, unos se burlaban, y otros decían: Ya te oiremos acerca de esto otra vez. 33 Y así Pablo salió de en medio de ellos. 34 Mas algunos creyeron, juntándose con él; entre los cuales estaba Dionisio el areopagita, una mujer llamada Dámaris, y otros con ellos.

In Thessalonica

17 When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica,(A) where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue,(B) and on three Sabbath(C) days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,(D) 3 explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer(E) and rise from the dead.(F) “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,”(G) he said. 4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas,(H) as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

5 But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city.(I) They rushed to Jason’s(J) house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.[a] 6 But when they did not find them, they dragged(K) Jason and some other believers(L) before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world(M) have now come here,(N) 7 and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.”(O) 8 When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil. 9 Then they made Jason(P) and the others post bond and let them go.

In Berea

10 As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas(Q) away to Berea.(R) On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.(S) 11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica,(T) for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures(U) every day to see if what Paul said was true.(V) 12 As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.(W)

13 But when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea,(X) some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up. 14 The believers(Y) immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas(Z) and Timothy(AA) stayed at Berea. 15 Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens(AB) and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.(AC)

In Athens

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue(AD) with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. 18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news(AE) about Jesus and the resurrection.(AF) 19 Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus,(AG) where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching(AH) is that you are presenting? 20 You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” 21 (All the Athenians(AI) and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)

22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus(AJ) and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.(AK) 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship(AL)—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

24 “The God who made the world and everything in it(AM) is the Lord of heaven and earth(AN) and does not live in temples built by human hands.(AO) 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.(AP) 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.(AQ) 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.(AR) 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’[b](AS) As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’[c]

29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.(AT) 30 In the past God overlooked(AU) such ignorance,(AV) but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.(AW) 31 For he has set a day when he will judge(AX) the world with justice(AY) by the man he has appointed.(AZ) He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”(BA)

32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead,(BB) some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” 33 At that, Paul left the Council. 34 Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus,(BC) also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.

17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

33 So Paul departed from among them.

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
