Saulo persegue a igreja
8 1-2 Saulo tinha concordado com a morte de Estêvão. Alguns homens que temiam a Deus o enterraram e choraram muito por causa de sua morte.
Daquele dia em diante a igreja em Jerusalém começou a sofrer uma grande perseguição. Todos os discípulos foram dispersos pelas regiões da Judeia e de Samaria, com exceção dos apóstolos. 3 Saulo procurava destruir a igreja. Ele ia nas casas onde eles costumavam se reunir, arrastava para fora tanto homens como mulheres e os punha na cadeia. 4 Aqueles que tinham sido dispersos iam a todos os lugares anunciando as Boas Novas.
Filipe em Samaria
5 Filipe[a] foi para a cidade de Samaria e lá proclamava a respeito de Cristo a todos. 6 Quando a multidão o ouviu e viu os sinais que ele fazia, começou a prestar muita atenção às coisas que ele dizia. 7 Demônios, gritando alto, saíam de muitas pessoas possuídas por eles, muitos coxos e paralíticos eram curados 8 e houve grande alegria naquela cidade. 9 Havia em Samaria um homem chamado Simão que, já há algum tempo, praticava magias e fascinava as pessoas de lá. Ele se dizia ser alguém importante 10 e todas as pessoas, desde o mais humilde até o mais importante, lhe davam atenção e diziam:
—Este homem tem o poder de Deus, chamado “O Grande Poder!”
11 Todos lhe davam muita atenção porque, já há algum tempo, os vinha fascinando com a sua magia.
O batismo dos samaritanos
12 Mas muitas pessoas, tanto homens como mulheres, acreditaram no que Filipe lhes tinha dito a respeito das Boas Novas do reino de Deus e de Jesus Cristo e foram batizadas. 13 Até mesmo Simão acreditou e, depois de ter sido batizado, acompanhava Filipe de perto, e observava fascinado os grandes sinais e milagres que eram feitos.
14 Em Jerusalém, os apóstolos ouviram dizer que Samaria tinha aceitado a mensagem de Deus. Então eles enviaram a Pedro e João para lá. 15 Quando os dois chegaram, oraram por eles para que pudessem receber o Espírito Santo. 16 Eles fizeram isso porque o Espírito Santo ainda não tinha descido sobre nenhum deles, uma vez que eles só tinham sido batizados em nome do Senhor Jesus. 17 Então Pedro e João puseram as mãos sobre eles e eles receberam o Espírito Santo.
18 Simão viu que o Espírito era dado quando os apóstolos punham as mãos sobre as pessoas. Então ele lhes ofereceu dinheiro e disse:
19 —Deem-me também este poder, para que toda pessoa sobre quem eu puser as minhas mãos receba o Espírito Santo.
20 Pedro, então, lhe disse:
—Que você e o seu dinheiro sejam destruídos para sempre! Você pensa que pode comprar a dádiva de Deus com dinheiro? 21 Você não pode participar conosco deste ensino, pois o seu coração não é honesto diante de Deus. 22 Mude a sua forma de pensar e de viver a respeito dessa sua maldade e ore ao Senhor! Assim, talvez, você poderá ser perdoado por ter pensado desta forma. 23 Pois vejo que está cheio de inveja e amargura e preso pelo pecado!
24 Então Simão disse:
—Orem ao Senhor por mim, para que nenhuma dessas coisas que vocês disseram me aconteça.
25 Pedro e João voltaram para Jerusalém depois de terem testificado e proclamado a mensagem do Senhor. No caminho, eles foram anunciando as Boas Novas em muitas aldeias samaritanas.
Filipe e o homem da Etiópia
26 Um anjo do Senhor falou com Filipe e disse:
—Prepare-se e vá para o sul, pela estrada que desce de Jerusalém e vai até Gaza.
(Aquela estrada é deserta.)
27 Ele, então, se preparou e partiu. No caminho encontrou um homem etíope que era eunuco. Ele era um alto oficial de Candace, rainha da Etiópia, encarregado de todo o tesouro dela. Ele estava voltando de Jerusalém onde tinha ido adorar a Deus. 28 Sentado em sua carruagem, ele estava lendo o livro do profeta Isaías. 29 Então o Espírito disse a Filipe:
—Vá até aquela carruagem e fique perto dela.
30 Filipe correu para perto da carruagem e ouviu o eunuco lendo o livro do profeta Isaías, e então disse:
—O senhor realmente entende o que está lendo?
31 O homem respondeu:
—Como posso realmente entender se alguém não me explicar?
E convidou a Filipe para subir e sentar-se com ele. 32 A passagem da Escritura que o eunuco estava lendo era esta:
“Ele foi levado como uma ovelha para o matadouro
e assim como o cordeiro fica em silêncio diante daquele que corta a sua lã,
ele também não abriu a sua boca.
33 Na sua humilhação, foi-lhe negada justiça
e ninguém falará dos seus descendentes,
pois a sua vida foi tirada da terra”.(A)
34 Então o eunuco perguntou a Filipe:
—Por favor, diga-me: de quem o profeta está falando? Ele está falando dele mesmo ou de outra pessoa?
35 Então Filipe anunciou as Boas Novas a respeito de Jesus, começando pela explicação desta passagem da Escritura.
O batismo do eunuco
36 E, prosseguindo pela estrada, chegaram a um lugar onde havia água. O eunuco então disse:
—Olhe! água! O que me impede de ser batizado? 37 [b] 38 Então, mandou que a carruagem parasse e ambos, tanto ele como Filipe, entraram na água e Filipe o batizou. 39 Quando saíram da água, o Espírito do Senhor pegou a Filipe e o levou embora e o eunuco nunca mais o viu, mas seguiu o seu caminho cheio de alegria. 40 De repente Filipe se encontrou na cidade de Azoto e, partindo dali, foi anunciando as Boas Novas por todas as cidades, até chegar a Cesareia.

8 And Saul(A) approved of their killing him.
The Church Persecuted and Scattered
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered(B) throughout Judea and Samaria.(C) 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul(D) began to destroy the church.(E) Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.
Philip in Samaria
4 Those who had been scattered(F) preached the word wherever they went.(G) 5 Philip(H) went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many,(I) and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.(J) 8 So there was great joy in that city.
Simon the Sorcerer
9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery(K) in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,(L) 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”(M) 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God(N) and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,(O) both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles(P) he saw.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria(Q) had accepted the word of God,(R) they sent Peter and John(S) to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,(T) 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them;(U) they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(V) 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them,(W) and they received the Holy Spirit.(X)
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!(Y) 21 You have no part or share(Z) in this ministry, because your heart is not right(AA) before God. 22 Repent(AB) of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me(AC) so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord(AD) and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.(AE)
Philip and the Ethiopian
26 Now an angel(AF) of the Lord said to Philip,(AG) “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian[a](AH) eunuch,(AI) an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,(AJ) 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told(AK) Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:
“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.”[b](AL)
34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began(AM) with that very passage of Scripture(AN) and told him the good news(AO) about Jesus.
36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”(AP) [37] [c] 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away,(AQ) and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns(AR) until he reached Caesarea.(AS)

8 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.
3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.
4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
8 And there was great joy in that city.
9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

Persecución contra los creyentes
A partir de ese día empezó una gran persecución contra la iglesia de Jerusalén. Toda la iglesia huyó a diferentes lugares de Judea y Samaria. Sólo los apóstoles se quedaron en Jerusalén. 2 Unos hombres piadosos enterraron a Esteban y lloraron mucho por él. 3 Saulo también trataba de destruir al grupo, entraba en las casas donde se reunían, sacaba tanto a hombres como a mujeres y los metía en la cárcel. 4 Sin embargo, todos los que huían iban anunciado el mensaje de las buenas noticias de salvación por dondequiera que iban.
Felipe anuncia el mensaje en Samaria
5 Felipe[a] fue a la ciudad de Samaria y allí anunció el mensaje acerca del Mesías. 6 Un gran número de samaritanos escuchaba a Felipe, veía las señales milagrosas que hacía y le prestaba mucha atención a su mensaje. 7 Muchos que tenían espíritus malignos fueron sanados; los espíritus les salían dando alaridos. También fueron sanados muchos inválidos y paralíticos. 8 Los habitantes de esa ciudad estaban muy contentos.
9 Había un hombre llamado Simón que practicaba la brujería. Él tenía muy impresionada a la gente de Samaria, pretendiendo ser un gran personaje. 10 Todos, importantes o no, le prestaban atención y decían: «Este hombre es “el gran poder divino”». 11 Simón los tenía tan impresionados con sus brujerías que la gente lo seguía. 12 Pero cuando Felipe le anunció al pueblo las buenas noticias del reino de Dios y del poder de Jesucristo, tanto hombres como mujeres le creyeron a Felipe y fueron bautizados. 13 Simón mismo creyó y fue bautizado. Seguía a Felipe muy de cerca, asombrado también con las maravillas tan poderosas y las señales milagrosas que Felipe hacía.
14 Cuando los apóstoles supieron en Jerusalén que los de Samaria había aceptado la palabra de Dios, les enviaron a Pedro y a Juan. 15 Cuando llegaron a Samaria después de bajar de Jerusalén, Pedro y Juan oraron para que los creyentes de Samaria recibieran el Espíritu Santo, 16 porque el Espíritu no había venido sobre ninguno de ellos. Solamente se habían bautizado en el nombre del Señor Jesús. 17 Después de orar, Pedro y Juan les impusieron las manos y recibieron el Espíritu Santo.
18 Al ver Simón que el Espíritu Santo se daba cuando Pedro y Juan imponían las manos, les ofreció dinero a los apóstoles 19 y les dijo:
—Denme ese poder para que a quien yo le imponga las manos reciba el Espíritu Santo.
20 Entonces Pedro le respondió:
—¡Púdrete con tu dinero! ¿Pensaste que podías comprar el don de Dios? 21 No tienes arte ni parte en nuestro trabajo porque Dios sabe que tienes la mente retorcida. 22 ¡Abandona tu maldad! Pídele al Señor que perdone tus malas intenciones. 23 Veo que estás lleno de amargura y de envidia, vives atado por el pecado.
24 Entonces Simón contestó:
—Pidan por mí al Señor, para que no me pase nada de lo que ustedes han dicho.
25 Una vez que los apóstoles dieron testimonio de lo que sabían de Jesucristo y anunciaron el mensaje del Señor, regresaron a Jerusalén. Por el camino, entraron a muchos pueblos samaritanos y anunciaron la buena noticia de salvación.
Felipe y el funcionario de Etiopía
26 Un ángel del Señor le habló a Felipe: «Prepárate para ir al sur por el camino que baja de Jerusalén a Gaza, el camino que cruza el desierto». 27 Entonces Felipe fue y encontró a un eunuco etíope, funcionario de la Candace, o sea la reina de Etiopía. Él estaba a cargo de todos los tesoros de ella y había viajado a Jerusalén para adorar a Dios. 28 Ahora regresaba a casa, sentado en su carruaje y leyendo el libro del profeta Isaías. 29 El Espíritu le dijo a Felipe: «Ve y acércate a ese carruaje». 30 Felipe corrió hacia el carruaje y escuchó al funcionario leyendo el libro del profeta Isaías. Entonces Felipe le dijo:
—¿Entiendes lo que lees?
31 El funcionario le dijo:
—¿Cómo voy a entenderlo sin tener quien me lo explique?
Entonces el funcionario invitó a Felipe para que subiera y se sentara con él. 32 La parte de la Escritura que estaba leyendo era esta:
«Fue llevado como oveja al matadero;
como un cordero que no se queja
cuando le cortan la lana, no dijo nada.
33 (A)Fue humillado y le quitaron todos sus derechos.
Su vida en la tierra terminó;
no habrá ningún relato acerca de sus descendientes».[b]
34 El funcionario le preguntó a Felipe:
—Por favor dime, ¿de quién está hablando el profeta? ¿Está hablando de él mismo o de otra persona?
35 Entonces Felipe comenzó a hablar. Empezó desde esta misma Escritura y le contó la buena noticia acerca de Jesús. 36 Mientras viajaban por el camino, llegaron a un lugar donde había agua, y el funcionario dijo:
—Mira, aquí hay agua; ¿qué me impide ser bautizado? 37 [c]
38 Entonces el funcionario ordenó que detuvieran el carruaje, y ambos, Felipe y el funcionario, entraron al agua y Felipe lo bautizó. 39 Cuando salieron del agua, el Espíritu del Señor se llevó a Felipe. El funcionario ya no lo volvió a ver y siguió muy feliz su camino. 40 Felipe apareció en la ciudad de Azoto, y anunció la buena noticia de salvación por todos los pueblos por donde pasaba en su viaje, hasta que llegó a Cesarea.
