19 E sucedeu que, enquanto Apolo estava em Corinto, Paulo, tendo passado por todas as regiões superiores, chegou a Éfeso e, achando ali alguns discípulos, 2 disse-lhes: Recebestes vós já o Espírito Santo quando crestes? E eles disseram-lhe: Nós nem ainda ouvimos que haja Espírito Santo. 3 Perguntou-lhes, então: Em que sois batizados, então? E eles disseram: No batismo de João. 4 Mas Paulo disse: Certamente João batizou com o batismo do arrependimento, dizendo ao povo que cresse no que após ele havia de vir, isto é, em Jesus Cristo. 5 E os que ouviram foram batizados em nome do Senhor Jesus. 6 E, impondo-lhes Paulo as mãos, veio sobre eles o Espírito Santo; e falavam línguas e profetizavam. 7 Estes eram, ao todo, uns doze varões.
8 E, entrando na sinagoga, falou ousadamente por espaço de três meses, disputando e persuadindo-os acerca do Reino de Deus. 9 Mas, como alguns deles se endurecessem e não obedecessem, falando mal do Caminho perante a multidão, retirou-se deles e separou os discípulos, disputando todos os dias na escola de um certo Tirano. 10 E durou isto por espaço de dois anos, de tal maneira que todos os que habitavam na Ásia ouviram a palavra do Senhor Jesus, tanto judeus como gregos. 11 E Deus, pelas mãos de Paulo, fazia maravilhas extraordinárias, 12 de sorte que até os lenços e aventais se levavam do seu corpo aos enfermos, e as enfermidades fugiam deles, e os espíritos malignos saíam. 13 E alguns dos exorcistas judeus, ambulantes, tentavam invocar o nome do Senhor Jesus sobre os que tinham espíritos malignos, dizendo: Esconjuro-vos por Jesus, a quem Paulo prega. 14 Os que faziam isto eram sete filhos de Ceva, judeu, principal dos sacerdotes. 15 Respondendo, porém, o espírito maligno, disse: Conheço a Jesus e bem sei quem é Paulo; mas vós, quem sois? 16 E, saltando neles o homem que tinha o espírito maligno e assenhoreando-se de dois, pôde mais do que eles; de tal maneira que, nus e feridos, fugiram daquela casa. 17 E foi isto notório a todos os que habitavam em Éfeso, tanto judeus como gregos; e caiu temor sobre todos eles, e o nome do Senhor Jesus era engrandecido. 18 Muitos dos que tinham crido vinham, confessando e publicando os seus feitos. 19 Também muitos dos que seguiam artes mágicas trouxeram os seus livros e os queimaram na presença de todos, e, feita a conta do seu preço, acharam que montava a cinquenta mil peças de prata. 20 Assim, a palavra do Senhor crescia poderosamente e prevalecia.
21 E, cumpridas estas coisas, Paulo propôs, em espírito, ir a Jerusalém, passando pela Macedônia e pela Acaia, dizendo: Depois que houver estado ali, importa-me ver também Roma. 22 E, enviando à Macedônia dois daqueles que o serviam, Timóteo e Erasto, ficou ele por algum tempo na Ásia.
23 Naquele mesmo tempo, houve um não pequeno alvoroço acerca do Caminho. 24 Porque um certo ourives da prata, por nome Demétrio, que fazia, de prata, nichos de Diana, dava não pouco lucro aos artífices, 25 aos quais, havendo-os ajuntado com os oficiais de obras semelhantes, disse: Varões, vós bem sabeis que deste ofício temos a nossa prosperidade; 26 e bem vedes e ouvis que não só em Éfeso, mas até quase em toda a Ásia, este Paulo tem convencido e afastado uma grande multidão, dizendo que não são deuses os que se fazem com as mãos. 27 Não somente há o perigo de que a nossa profissão caia em descrédito, mas também de que o próprio templo da grande deusa Diana seja estimado em nada, vindo a majestade daquela que toda a Ásia e o mundo veneram a ser destruída.
28 Ouvindo isto, encheram-se de ira e clamaram, dizendo: Grande é a Diana dos efésios! 29 E encheu-se de confusão toda a cidade, e unânimes correram ao teatro, arrebatando a Gaio e a Aristarco, macedônios, companheiros de Paulo na viagem. 30 E, querendo Paulo apresentar-se ao povo, não lho permitiram os discípulos. 31 Também alguns dos principais da Ásia, que eram seus amigos, lhe rogaram que não se apresentasse no teatro. 32 Uns, pois, clamavam de uma maneira, outros, de outra, porque o ajuntamento era confuso; e os mais deles não sabiam por que causa se tinham ajuntado. 33 Então, tiraram Alexandre dentre a multidão, impelindo-o os judeus para diante; e Alexandre, acenando com a mão, queria dar razão disto ao povo. 34 Mas, quando conheceram que era judeu, todos unanimemente levantaram a voz, clamando por espaço de quase duas horas: Grande é a Diana dos efésios! 35 Então, o escrivão da cidade, tendo apaziguado a multidão, disse: Varões efésios, qual é o homem que não sabe que a cidade dos efésios é a guardadora do templo da grande deusa Diana e da imagem que desceu de Júpiter? 36 Ora, não podendo isto ser contraditado, convém que vos aplaqueis e nada façais temerariamente; 37 porque estes homens que aqui trouxestes nem são sacrílegos nem blasfemam da vossa deusa. 38 Mas, se Demétrio e os artífices que estão com ele têm alguma coisa contra alguém, há audiências e há procônsules; que se acusem uns aos outros. 39 Mas, se alguma outra coisa demandais, averiguar-se-á em legítimo ajuntamento. 40 Na verdade, até corremos perigo de que, por hoje, sejamos acusados de sedição, não havendo causa alguma com que possamos justificar este concurso. 41 E, tendo dito isto, despediu o ajuntamento.

19 Enquanto Apolo estava em Corinto, Paulo viajou pelas regiões do interior até chegar a Éfeso, no litoral, onde encontrou alguns discípulos. 2 Ele lhes perguntou: “Vocês receberam o Espírito Santo quando creram?”.
“Não”, responderam eles. “Nem sequer ouvimos que existe o Espírito Santo.”
3 “Então que batismo vocês receberam?”, perguntou ele.
“O batismo de João”, responderam.
4 Paulo disse: “João batizava com o batismo de arrependimento, dizendo ao povo que cresse naquele que viria depois, isto é, em Jesus”.
5 Assim que ouviram isso, foram batizados em nome do Senhor Jesus. 6 Paulo lhes impôs as mãos e o Espírito Santo veio sobre eles, e falaram em línguas e profetizaram. 7 Eram ao todo uns doze homens.
O ministério de Paulo em Éfeso
8 Em seguida, Paulo foi à sinagoga e ali pregou corajosamente durante três meses, argumentando de modo convincente sobre o reino de Deus. 9 Mas alguns deles se mostraram endurecidos, rejeitaram a mensagem e falaram publicamente contra o Caminho. Paulo, então, deixou a sinagoga e levou consigo os discípulos, passando a realizar discussões diárias na escola de Tirano. 10 Isso continuou durante os dois anos seguintes, e gente de toda a província da Ásia, tanto judeus como gregos, ouviu a palavra do Senhor.
11 Deus concedeu a Paulo o poder de realizar milagres extraordinários. 12 Quando lenços ou aventais usados por ele eram colocados sobre enfermos, estes eram curados de suas doenças e deles saíam espíritos malignos.
13 Alguns judeus viajavam pelas cidades expulsando espíritos malignos. Tentavam usar o nome do Senhor Jesus, dizendo: “Ordeno que saia em nome de Jesus, a quem Paulo anuncia!”. 14 Os homens que faziam isso eram os sete filhos de Ceva, um dos principais sacerdotes. 15 Certa ocasião, o espírito maligno respondeu: “Eu conheço Jesus e conheço Paulo, mas quem são vocês?”. 16 O homem possuído pelo espírito maligno saltou em cima deles e os atacou com tanta violência que fugiram da casa, despidos e feridos.
17 A notícia do ocorrido se espalhou rapidamente por toda a cidade de Éfeso, tanto entre judeus como entre gregos, e sobre eles veio um temor reverente, e o nome do Senhor Jesus era engrandecido. 18 Muitos dos que creram confessaram suas obras pecaminosas. 19 Vários deles, que haviam praticado feitiçaria, trouxeram seus livros de encantamentos e os queimaram publicamente. O valor dos livros totalizou cinquenta mil moedas de prata.[a] 20 Assim, a mensagem a respeito do Senhor se espalhou amplamente e teve efeito poderoso.
21 Depois disso, Paulo se sentiu impelido pelo Espírito[b] a passar pela Macedônia e a Acaia antes de ir a Jerusalém. “E, de lá, devo prosseguir para Roma!”, disse ele. 22 Então, enviou adiante dele à Macedônia dois assistentes, Timóteo e Erasto, e permaneceu um pouco mais na província da Ásia.
O tumulto em Éfeso
23 Por essa época, houve enorme tumulto em Éfeso por causa do Caminho. 24 Começou com Demétrio, ourives que fabricava modelos de prata do templo da deusa grega Ártemis[c] e que empregava muitos artífices. 25 Ele os reuniu a outros que trabalhavam em ofícios semelhantes e disse:
“Senhores, vocês sabem que nossa prosperidade vem deste empreendimento. 26 Mas, como vocês viram e ouviram, esse sujeito, Paulo, convenceu muita gente de que deuses feitos por mãos humanas não são deuses de verdade. Fez isso não apenas aqui em Éfeso, mas em toda a província. 27 Claro que não me refiro apenas à perda do respeito público por nossa atividade. Também me preocupa que o templo da grande deusa Ártemis perca sua influência e que esta deusa magnífica, adorada em toda a província da Ásia e ao redor do mundo, seja destituída de seu grande prestígio!”.
28 Ao ouvir isso, ficaram furiosos e começaram a gritar: “Grande é Ártemis dos efésios!”. 29 Em pouco tempo, a cidade toda estava uma confusão. O povo correu para o anfiteatro, arrastando os macedônios Gaio e Aristarco, companheiros de viagem de Paulo. 30 Ele também quis entrar, mas os discípulos não permitiram. 31 Alguns amigos de Paulo, oficiais da província, também lhe enviaram um recado no qual suplicaram que não arriscasse a vida entrando no anfiteatro.
32 Lá dentro, em polvorosa, o povo todo gritava, e cada um dizia uma coisa. Na verdade, a maioria nem sabia por que estava ali. 33 Entre a multidão, os judeus empurraram Alexandre para a frente e ordenaram que explicasse a situação. Ele fez sinal pedindo silêncio e tentou falar. 34 No entanto, quando a multidão percebeu que ele era judeu, começou a gritar novamente e continuou por cerca de duas horas: “Grande é Ártemis dos efésios!”.
35 Por fim, o escrivão da cidade conseguiu acalmar a multidão e disse: “Cidadãos de Éfeso, todos sabem que Éfeso é a guardiã do templo da grande Ártemis, cuja imagem caiu do céu para nós. 36 Portanto, sendo este um fato inegável, acalmem-se e não façam nada precipitadamente. 37 Vocês trouxeram estes homens aqui, mas eles não roubaram nada do templo nem disseram coisa alguma contra nossa deusa.
38 “Se Demétrio e seus artífices têm alguma queixa contra eles, os tribunais estão abertos e há oficiais disponíveis para ouvir o caso. Que façam acusações formais. 39 E, se há outras queixas que desejam apresentar, elas podem ser resolvidas em assembleia, conforme a lei. 40 Corremos o perigo de ser acusados de provocar desordem, pois não há motivo para este tumulto. E, se exigirem de nós uma explicação, não teremos o que dizer”. 41 [d]Então os despediu, e a multidão se dispersou.

Paul in Ephesus
19 While Apollos(A) was at Corinth,(B) Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus.(C) There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit(D) when[a] you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
4 Paul said, “John’s baptism(E) was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”(F) 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(G) 6 When Paul placed his hands on them,(H) the Holy Spirit came on them,(I) and they spoke in tongues[b](J) and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
8 Paul entered the synagogue(K) and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.(L) 9 But some of them(M) became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way.(N) So Paul left them. He took the disciples(O) with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for two years,(P) so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia(Q) heard the word of the Lord.(R)
11 God did extraordinary miracles(S) through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured(T) and the evil spirits left them.
13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits(U) tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus(V) whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus,(W) they were all seized with fear,(X) and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.[c] 20 In this way the word of the Lord(Y) spread widely and grew in power.(Z)
21 After all this had happened, Paul decided[d] to go to Jerusalem,(AA) passing through Macedonia(AB) and Achaia.(AC) “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”(AD) 22 He sent two of his helpers,(AE) Timothy(AF) and Erastus,(AG) to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia(AH) a little longer.
The Riot in Ephesus
23 About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.(AI) 24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. 25 He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.(AJ) 26 And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus(AK) and in practically the whole province of Asia.(AL) He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.(AM) 27 There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
28 When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”(AN) 29 Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius(AO) and Aristarchus,(AP) Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia,(AQ) and all of them rushed into the theater together. 30 Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples(AR) would not let him. 31 Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
32 The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another.(AS) Most of the people did not even know why they were there. 33 The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned(AT) for silence in order to make a defense before the people. 34 But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”(AU)
35 The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians,(AV) doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36 Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. 37 You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples(AW) nor blasphemed our goddess. 38 If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen(AX) have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls.(AY) They can press charges. 39 If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40 As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” 41 After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.

Paul at Ephesus
19 And it happened, while (A)Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through (B)the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
So they said to him, (C)“We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”
So they said, (D)“Into John’s baptism.”
4 Then Paul said, (E)“John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
5 When they heard this, they were baptized (F)in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had (G)laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and (H)they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all.
8 (I)And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading (J)concerning the things of the kingdom of God. 9 But (K)when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil (L)of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 And (M)this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
Miracles Glorify Christ
11 Now (N)God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 (O)so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 (P)Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists (Q)took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, [a]“We [b]exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul (R)preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, [c]overpowered them, and prevailed against [d]them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and (S)fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many who had believed came (T)confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 (U)So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.

21 (V)When these things were accomplished, Paul (W)purposed in the Spirit, when he had passed through (X)Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, (Y)I must also see Rome.” 22 So he sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, (Z)Timothy and (AA)Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a time.
23 And (AB)about that time there arose a great commotion about (AC)the Way. 24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of [e]Diana, brought (AD)no small profit to the craftsmen. 25 He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said: “Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade. 26 Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that (AE)they are not gods which are made with hands. 27 So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Diana may be despised and [f]her magnificence destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”
28 Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!” 29 So the whole city was filled with confusion, and rushed into the theater with one accord, having seized (AF)Gaius and (AG)Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul’s travel companions. 30 And when Paul wanted to go in to the people, the disciples would not allow him. 31 Then some of the [g]officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him pleading that he would not venture into the theater. 32 Some therefore cried one thing and some another, for the assembly was confused, and most of them did not know why they had come together. 33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And (AH)Alexander (AI)motioned with his hand, and wanted to make his defense to the people. 34 But when they found out that he was a Jew, all with one voice cried out for about two hours, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”
35 And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said: “Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple guardian of the great goddess [h]Diana, and of the image which fell down from [i]Zeus? 36 Therefore, since these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rashly. 37 For you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of [j]your goddess. 38 Therefore, if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a [k]case against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. 39 But if you have any other inquiry to make, it shall be determined in the lawful assembly. 40 For we are in danger of being [l]called in question for today’s uproar, there being no reason which we may give to account for this disorderly gathering.” 41 And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
