Paulo em Tessalônica e em Bereia
17 E, passando por Anfípolis e Apolônia, chegaram a Tessalônica, onde havia uma sinagoga de judeus. 2 E Paulo, como tinha por costume, foi ter com eles e, por três sábados, disputou com eles sobre as Escrituras, 3 expondo e demonstrando que convinha que o Cristo padecesse e ressuscitasse dos mortos. E este Jesus, que vos anuncio, dizia ele, é o Cristo. 4 E alguns deles creram e ajuntaram-se com Paulo e Silas; e também uma grande multidão de gregos religiosos e não poucas mulheres distintas. 5 Mas os judeus desobedientes, movidos de inveja, tomaram consigo alguns homens perversos dentre os vadios, e, ajuntando o povo, alvoroçaram a cidade, e, assaltando a casa de Jasom, procuravam tirá-los para junto do povo. 6 Porém, não os achando, trouxeram Jasom e alguns irmãos à presença dos magistrados da cidade, clamando: Estes que têm alvoroçado o mundo chegaram também aqui, 7 os quais Jasom recolheu. Todos estes procedem contra os decretos de César, dizendo que há outro rei, Jesus. 8 E alvoroçaram a multidão e os principais da cidade, que ouviram estas coisas. 9 Tendo, porém, recebido satisfação de Jasom e dos demais, os soltaram.
10 E logo os irmãos enviaram de noite Paulo e Silas a Bereia; e eles, chegando lá, foram à sinagoga dos judeus. 11 Ora, estes foram mais nobres do que os que estavam em Tessalônica, porque de bom grado receberam a palavra, examinando cada dia nas Escrituras se estas coisas eram assim. 12 De sorte que creram muitos deles, e também mulheres gregas da classe nobre, e não poucos varões. 13 Mas, logo que os judeus de Tessalônica souberam que a palavra de Deus também era anunciada por Paulo em Bereia, foram lá e excitaram as multidões. 14 No mesmo instante, os irmãos mandaram a Paulo que fosse até ao mar, mas Silas e Timóteo ficaram ali.
Paulo em Atenas. O seu discurso no Areópago
15 E os que acompanhavam Paulo o levaram até Atenas e, recebendo ordem para que Silas e Timóteo fossem ter com ele o mais depressa possível, partiram.
16 E, enquanto Paulo os esperava em Atenas, o seu espírito se comovia em si mesmo, vendo a cidade tão entregue à idolatria. 17 De sorte que disputava na sinagoga com os judeus e religiosos e, todos os dias, na praça, com os que se apresentavam. 18 E alguns dos filósofos epicureus e estoicos contendiam com ele. Uns diziam: Que quer dizer este paroleiro? E outros: Parece que é pregador de deuses estranhos. Porque lhes anunciava a Jesus e a ressurreição. 19 E, tomando-o, o levaram ao Areópago, dizendo: Poderemos nós saber que nova doutrina é essa de que falas? 20 Pois coisas estranhas nos trazes aos ouvidos; queremos, pois, saber o que vem a ser isso. 21 (Pois todos os atenienses e estrangeiros residentes de nenhuma outra coisa se ocupavam senão de dizer e ouvir alguma novidade.) 22 E, estando Paulo no meio do Areópago, disse: Varões atenienses, em tudo vos vejo um tanto supersticiosos; 23 porque, passando eu e vendo os vossos santuários, achei também um altar em que estava escrito: Ao Deus Desconhecido. Esse, pois, que vós honrais não o conhecendo é o que eu vos anuncio. 24 O Deus que fez o mundo e tudo que nele há, sendo Senhor do céu e da terra, não habita em templos feitos por mãos de homens. 25 Nem tampouco é servido por mãos de homens, como que necessitando de alguma coisa; pois ele mesmo é quem dá a todos a vida, a respiração e todas as coisas; 26 e de um só fez toda a geração dos homens para habitar sobre toda a face da terra, determinando os tempos já dantes ordenados e os limites da sua habitação, 27 para que buscassem ao Senhor, se, porventura, tateando, o pudessem achar, ainda que não está longe de cada um de nós; 28 porque nele vivemos, e nos movemos, e existimos, como também alguns dos vossos poetas disseram: Pois somos também sua geração. 29 Sendo nós, pois, geração de Deus, não havemos de cuidar que a divindade seja semelhante ao ouro, ou à prata, ou à pedra esculpida por artifício e imaginação dos homens. 30 Mas Deus, não tendo em conta os tempos da ignorância, anuncia agora a todos os homens, em todo lugar, que se arrependam, 31 porquanto tem determinado um dia em que com justiça há de julgar o mundo, por meio do varão que destinou; e disso deu certeza a todos, ressuscitando-o dos mortos.
32 E, como ouviram falar da ressurreição dos mortos, uns escarneciam, e outros diziam: Acerca disso te ouviremos outra vez. 33 E assim Paulo saiu do meio deles. 34 Todavia, chegando alguns varões a ele, creram: entre os quais estava Dionísio, o areopagita, e uma mulher por nome Dâmaris, e, com eles, outros.

Preaching Christ at Thessalonica
17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to (A)Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 Then Paul, as his custom was, (B)went in to them, and for three Sabbaths (C)reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating (D)that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” 4 (E)And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and (F)Silas.
Assault on Jason’s House
5 But the Jews [a]who were not persuaded, [b]becoming (G)envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of (H)Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. 6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, (I)“These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. 7 Jason has [c]harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, (J)saying there is another king—Jesus.” 8 And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things. 9 So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
Ministering at Berea
10 Then (K)the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more [d]fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and (L)searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds. 14 (M)Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there. 15 So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and (N)receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.
The Philosophers at Athens
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, (O)his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was [e]given over to idols. 17 Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there. 18 [f]Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this [g]babbler want to say?”
Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them (P)Jesus and the resurrection.
19 And they took him and brought him to the [h]Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak? 20 For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.” 21 For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing.
Addressing the Areopagus
22 Then Paul stood in the midst of the [i]Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; 23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:
TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.
Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: 24 (Q)God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is (R)Lord of heaven and earth, (S)does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He (T)gives to all life, breath, and all things. 26 And He has made from one [j]blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and (U)the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 (V)so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, (W)though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for (X)in Him we live and move and have our being, (Y)as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ 29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, (Z)we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. 30 Truly, (AA)these times of ignorance God overlooked, but (AB)now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which (AC)He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by (AD)raising Him from the dead.”
32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter.” 33 So Paul departed from among them. 34 However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

Sa Tesalonica
17 Nang makaraan na sina Pablo at Silas[a] sa Amfipolis at sa Apolonia ay nakarating sila sa Tesalonica, kung saan ay may isang sinagoga ng mga Judio.
2 At si Pablo ay pumasok ayon sa kanyang kaugalian, at sa loob ng tatlong Sabbath ay nangatuwiran sa kanila mula sa mga kasulatan,
3 na ipinapaliwanag at pinatutunayan na kailangang magdusa ang Cristo at muling mabuhay mula sa mga patay; at sinasabi, “Itong Jesus na aking ipinangangaral sa inyo ay siyang Cristo.”
4 Nahikayat ang ilan sa kanila at sumama kina Pablo at kay Silas, gayundin ang napakaraming mga Griyegong masisipag sa kabanalan, at hindi kakaunting mga pangunahing babae.
5 Subalit dahil sa inggit, ang mga Judio ay nagsama ng ilang masasamang tao mula sa pamilihan at nang makapagtipon sila ng maraming tao ay ginulo nila ang lunsod. Nilusob nila ang bahay ni Jason, sa kagustuhang maiharap sina Pablo at Silas[b] sa mga tao.
6 Nang sila'y hindi nila natagpuan, kanilang kinaladkad si Jason at ang ilang kapatid sa harap ng mga pinuno ng lunsod, na ipinagsisigawan, “Ang mga taong ito na nanggugulo[c] ay dumating din dito;
7 at tinanggap sila ni Jason. Lahat sila ay kumikilos laban sa mga utos ni Cesar, at sinasabi nilang may ibang hari na ang pangalan ay Jesus.”
8 Ang napakaraming tao at ang mga pinuno ng lunsod ay naligalig nang kanilang marinig ang mga bagay na ito.
9 Nang sila'y makakuha ng piyansa mula kay Jason at sa iba pa, ay kanilang pinakawalan sila.
Sa Berea
10 Nang gabing iyon ay agad na pinaalis ng mga kapatid sina Pablo at Silas patungo sa Berea. Nang dumating sila roon, pumasok sila sa sinagoga ng mga Judio.
11 Ngayon ang mga ito ay higit na mararangal kaysa mga taga-Tesalonica, sapagkat tinanggap nila ang salita ng buong pananabik na sinisiyasat araw-araw ang mga kasulatan kung tunay nga ang mga bagay na ito.
12 Kaya marami sa kanila ang nanampalataya, kasama ang maraming babaing Griyego at mga pangunahing lalaki.
13 Subalit nang malaman ng mga Judiong taga-Tesalonica na ang salita ng Diyos ay ipinangaral din ni Pablo sa Berea, sila ay nagpunta rin doon upang guluhin at sulsulan ang maraming tao.
14 At agad na isinugo ng mga kapatid si Pablo paalis hanggang sa dagat, ngunit nanatili roon sina Silas at Timoteo.
15 Si Pablo ay dinala ng mga naghatid sa kanya hanggang sa Atenas; at nang matanggap na nila ang utos upang sina Silas at Timoteo ay sumama sa kanya sa lalong madaling panahon, siya'y kanila nang iniwan.
Sa Atenas
16 Samantalang sila'y hinihintay ni Pablo sa Atenas, siya ay labis na nanlumo nang makita niya na ang lunsod ay punô ng mga diyus-diyosan.
17 Kaya't sa sinagoga ay nakipagtalo siya sa mga Judio at sa mga taong masisipag sa kabanalan, at sa pamilihan sa araw-araw sa mga nagkataong naroroon.
18 Ilan sa mga pilosopong Epicureo at Estoico ay nakipagtalo rin sa kanya. At sinabi ng ilan, “Anong nais sabihin ng madaldal na ito?” Sinabi ng iba, “Parang siya'y isang tagapagbalita ng mga ibang diyos”—sapagkat ipinangangaral niya si Jesus at ang pagkabuhay.
19 Siya'y kinuha nila at dinala sa Areopago, at tinanong, “Maaari ba naming malaman kung ano itong bagong aral na sinasabi mo?
20 Sapagkat naghahatid ka ng mga kakaibang bagay sa aming mga tainga; kaya't ibig naming malaman kung ano ang kahulugan ng mga bagay na ito.”
21 Lahat ng mga taga-Atenas at ang mga dayuhang naninirahan doon ay walang pinaggugulan ng panahon kundi ang mag-usap o makinig ng mga bagong bagay.
22 Kaya't tumindig si Pablo sa gitna ng Areopago, at sinabi, “Mga lalaking taga-Atenas, napapansin ko na sa lahat ng bagay kayo'y lubhang relihiyoso.
23 Sapagkat sa aking pagdaraan, at sa pagmamasid ng mga bagay na inyong sinasamba, ay nakatagpo din naman ako ng isang dambana na may sulat na ganito, ‘SA ISANG DI-KILALANG DIYOS.’ Kaya't ang sinasamba ninyo na hindi kilala ay siyang ipahahayag ko sa inyo.
24 Ang(A) Diyos na gumawa ng sanlibutan at ng lahat ng mga bagay na naririto, siya na Panginoon ng langit at ng lupa, ay hindi tumitira sa mga templong ginawa ng tao;
25 ni hindi rin naman siya pinaglilingkuran ng mga kamay ng tao, na para bang mayroon siyang kailangan, yamang siya ang nagbibigay sa lahat ng tao ng buhay at ng hininga, at ng lahat ng bagay na ito.
26 Nilikha niya mula sa isa[d] ang bawat bansa ng mga tao upang manirahan sa ibabaw ng buong lupa. Itinakda niya ang mga panahon at mga hangganan ng kanilang titirhan,
27 upang kanilang hanapin ang Diyos, baka sakaling siya'y mahagilap nila at siya'y matagpuan, bagaman hindi siya malayo sa bawat isa sa atin.
28 Sapagkat sa kanya tayo'y nabubuhay, at kumikilos, at nasa kanya ang ating pagkatao; tulad ng sinabi ng ilan sa inyong mga makata,
‘Sapagkat tayo rin ay kanyang supling.’
29 Yamang tayo'y supling ng Diyos, hindi marapat na ating isipin na ang pagka-Diyos ay katulad ng ginto, o ng pilak, o ng bato, na inanyuan ng husay at kaisipan ng tao.
30 Ang mga panahon ng kahangalan ay pinalampas na nga ng Diyos; ngunit ngayo'y ipinag-uutos niya sa lahat ng tao sa lahat ng dako na magsisi,
31 sapagkat itinakda niya ang isang araw kung kailan niya hahatulan ang sanlibutan ayon sa katuwiran sa pamamagitan ng lalaking kanyang itinalaga, at tungkol dito'y binigyan niya ng katiyakan ang lahat ng tao, nang kanyang muling buhayin siya mula sa mga patay.”
32 Nang kanilang marinig ang tungkol sa pagkabuhay ng mga patay, ay nangutya ang ilan; ngunit sinabi ng iba, “Pakikinggan ka naming muli tungkol dito.”
33 Sa gayo'y umalis si Pablo sa gitna nila.
34 Subalit sumama sa kanya ang ilang mga tao at nanampalataya. Isa sa kanila si Dionisio na taga-Areopago, at ang isang babaing ang pangalan ay Damaris at iba pang mga kasama nila.
