11 Poi mi fu data una canna, simile ad una verga. E l'angelo, stando ritto disse: «Alzati e misura il tempio di Dio, l'altare e quelli che vi adorano,

2 ma tralascia il cortile che è fuori del tempio e non misurarlo, perché è stato dato ai gentili, ed essi calpesteranno la santa città per quarantadue mesi.

3 Ma io darò ai miei due testimoni di profetizzare, ed essi profetizzeranno milleduecentosessanta giorni, vestiti di sacco.

4 Questi sono i due ulivi e i due candelabri che stanno davanti al Dio della terra.

5 E se qualcuno vuole far loro del male esce fuoco dalla loro bocca e divora i loro nemici; e chiunque vuole far loro del male deve essere ucciso in questa maniera.

6 Costoro hanno potestà di chiudere il cielo, perché non cada alcuna pioggia nei giorni della loro profezia; essi hanno pure potestà sulle acque, per convertirle in sangue e per percuotere la terra con qualunque piaga, ogni volta che vorranno.

7 E quando avranno compiuto la loro testimonianza, la bestia che sale dall'abisso farà guerra contro di loro, li vincerà e li ucciderà.

8 E i loro cadaveri giaceranno sulla piazza della grande città, che spiritualmente si chiama Sodoma ed Egitto, dove anche il nostro Signore è stato crocifisso.

9 E uomini dei vari popoli, tribù, lingue e nazioni vedranno i loro cadaveri per tre giorni e mezzo, e non permetteranno che i loro cadaveri siano deposti nei sepolcri.

10 E gli abitanti della terra si rallegreranno su di loro faranno festa e si manderanno doni gli uni agli altri, perché questi due profeti avevano tormentato gli abitanti della terra».

11 Ma dopo tre giorni e mezzo lo spirito di vita, che procede da Dio, entrò in loro; essi si alzarono in piedi e un grande spavento cadde su coloro che li videro.

12 Essi udirono quindi una gran voce dal cielo che disse loro: «Salite quassù». Cosí essi salirono al cielo in una nuvola e i loro nemici li videro.

13 E in quel momento si fece un gran terremoto, la decima parte della città cadde e settemila persone furono uccise nel terremoto, il resto fu spaventato e diede gloria al Dio del cielo.

14 Il secondo guaio è passato, ma ecco, presto viene il terzo guaio.

15 Poi il settimo angelo suonò la tromba e si fecero grandi voci nel cielo che dicevano: «I regni del mondo sono divenuti il regno del Signor nostro e del suo Cristo, ed egli regnerà nei secoli dei secoli».

16 Allora i ventiquattro anziani, che sedevano davanti a Dio sui loro troni, si prostrarono sulle loro facce e adorarono Dio,

17 dicendo: «Noi ti ringraziamo, o Signore, Dio onnipotente, che sei, che eri e che hai da venire, perché hai preso in mano il tuo grande potere e ti sei messo a regnare.

18 Le nazioni si erano adirate, ma è giunta la tua ira ed è arrivato il tempo di giudicare i morti e di dare il premio ai tuoi servi, ai profeti, ai santi e a coloro che temono il tuo nome, piccoli e grandi, e di distruggere quelli che distruggono la terra».

19 Allora si aperse nel cielo il tempio di Dio e in esso apparve l'arca del suo patto, e ci furono lampi, voci, tuoni, un terremoto e una forte tempesta di grandine.

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod(A) and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. 2 But exclude the outer court;(B) do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.(C) They will trample on the holy city(D) for 42 months.(E) 3 And I will appoint my two witnesses,(F) and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,(G) clothed in sackcloth.”(H) 4 They are “the two olive trees”(I) and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[a](J) 5 If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.(K) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.(L) 6 They have power to shut up the heavens(M) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;(N) and they have power to turn the waters into blood(O) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

7 Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(P) that comes up from the Abyss(Q) will attack them,(R) and overpower and kill them. 8 Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(S)—which is figuratively called Sodom(T) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(U) 9 For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(V) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(W) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(X) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(Y) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(Z) the breath[b] of life from God entered them,(AA) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(AB) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(AC) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(AD) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(AE) to the God of heaven.(AF)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(AG)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(AH) and there were loud voices(AI) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
    the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(AJ)
    and he will reign for ever and ever.”(AK)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(AL) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(AM) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(AN) to you, Lord God Almighty,(AO)
    the One who is and who was,(AP)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(AQ)
18 The nations were angry,(AR)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(AS)
    and for rewarding your servants the prophets(AT)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(AU)—
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(AV) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(AW) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(AX) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(AY)

11 Then[a] a measuring rod[b] like a staff was given to me, and I was told,[c] “Get up and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and the ones who worship there. 2 But[d] do not measure the outer courtyard[e] of the temple; leave it out,[f] because it has been given to the Gentiles,[g] and they will trample on the holy city[h] for forty-two months. 3 And I will grant my two witnesses authority[i] to prophesy for 1,260 days, dressed in sackcloth.” 4 (These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.)[j] 5 If[k] anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths[l] and completely consumes[m] their enemies. If[n] anyone wants to harm them, they must be killed this way. 6 These two have the power[o] to close up the sky so that it does not rain during the time[p] they are prophesying. They[q] have power[r] to turn the waters to blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague whenever they want. 7 When[s] they have completed their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war on them and conquer[t] them and kill them. 8 Their[u] corpses will lie in the street[v] of the great city that is symbolically[w] called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was also crucified. 9 For three and a half days those from every[x] people, tribe,[y] nation, and language will look at their corpses, because they will not permit them to be placed in a tomb.[z] 10 And those who live on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate, even sending gifts to each other, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth. 11 But[aa] after three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and tremendous fear seized[ab] those who were watching them. 12 Then[ac] they[ad] heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them: “Come up here!” So the two prophets[ae] went up to heaven in a cloud while[af] their enemies stared at them. 13 Just then[ag] a major earthquake took place and a tenth of the city collapsed; seven thousand people[ah] were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14 The second woe has come and gone;[ai] the third is coming quickly.

The Seventh Trumpet

15 Then[aj] the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying:

“The kingdom of the world
has become the kingdom of our Lord
and of his Christ,[ak]
and he will reign for ever and ever.”

16 Then[al] the twenty-four elders who are seated on their thrones before God threw themselves down with their faces to the ground[am] and worshiped God 17 with these words:[an]

“We give you thanks, Lord God, the All-Powerful,[ao]
the one who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power
and begun to reign.[ap]
18 The[aq] nations[ar] were enraged,
but[as] your wrath has come,
and the time has come for the dead to be judged,
and the time has come to give to your servants,[at]
the prophets, their reward,
as well as to the saints
and to those who revere[au] your name, both small and great,
and the time has come[av] to destroy those who destroy[aw] the earth.”

19 Then[ax] the temple of God in heaven was opened and the ark of his covenant was visible within his temple. And there were flashes of lightning, roaring,[ay] crashes of thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm.[az]

11 (Y)Now after the three-and-a-half days (Z)the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 And [e]they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” (AA)And they ascended to heaven (AB)in a cloud, (AC)and their enemies saw them. 13 In the same hour (AD)there was a great earthquake, (AE)and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid (AF)and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14 (AG)The second woe is past. Behold, the third woe is coming quickly.

Seventh Trumpet: The Kingdom Proclaimed

15 Then (AH)the seventh angel sounded: (AI)And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, (AJ)“The [f]kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, (AK)and He shall reign forever and ever!” 16 And (AL)the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and (AM)worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty,
The One (AN)who is and who was [g]and who is to come,
Because You have taken Your great power (AO)and reigned.
18 The nations were (AP)angry, and Your [h]wrath has come,
And the time of the (AQ)dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then (AR)the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of [i]His covenant was seen in His temple. And (AS)there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, (AT)and great hail.
