La caída de Babilonia
18 Después de esto, vi otro ángel que bajaba del cielo; tenía mucha autoridad, y la tierra quedó iluminada con su resplandor. 2 Con fuerte voz gritaba:
«¡Ya cayó, ya cayó la gran Babilonia!
¡Se ha vuelto vivienda de demonios,
guarida de toda clase de espíritus impuros,
nido de toda clase de aves impuras
y de fieras impuras y odiosas!
3 Pues todas las naciones se emborracharon
con el vino de su prostitución;
los reyes del mundo
se prostituyeron con ella,
y los comerciantes del mundo
se hicieron ricos con su exagerado derroche.»
4 Oí otra voz del cielo, que decía:
«Salgan de esa ciudad, ustedes que son mi pueblo,
para que no participen en sus pecados
ni los alcancen sus calamidades;
5 pues sus pecados se han amontonado hasta el cielo,
y Dios ha tenido presentes sus maldades.
6 Denle lo mismo que ella ha dado a otros;
páguenle el doble de lo que ha hecho;
mézclenle una bebida dos veces más fuerte
que la que ella mezcló para otros;
7 denle tormento y sufrimiento
en la medida en que se entregó al orgullo y al derroche.
Pues dice en su corazón:
“Aquí estoy sentada como una reina.
No soy viuda, ni sufriré.”
8 Por eso, en un solo día le vendrán sus calamidades:
muerte, aflicción y hambre,
y será quemada en el fuego;
porque poderoso es Dios, el Señor, que la ha condenado.»
9 Los reyes del mundo que se prostituyeron con ella y se entregaron al derroche, llorarán y harán lamentación por ella cuando vean el humo de su incendio. 10 Se quedarán lejos por miedo a su castigo, y dirán:
«¡Ay, ay de ti, la gran ciudad,
Babilonia, la ciudad poderosa!
Porque en un instante llegó tu castigo.»
11 Los comerciantes del mundo también llorarán y harán lamentación por esa ciudad, porque ya no habrá quien les compre sus cargamentos: 12 cargamentos de oro, plata, piedras preciosas, perlas, telas de lino fino y de seda, de color púrpura y rojo; toda clase de maderas aromáticas; objetos de marfil, de maderas preciosas, de bronce, de hierro y de mármol; 13 cargamentos de canela y especias aromáticas; incienso, perfumes y resinas; vino, aceite, harina fina y trigo; animales de carga, ovejas, caballos, carros y hasta esclavos, que son vidas humanas. 14 Y dirán a la ciudad:
«¡Ya no tienes las ricas frutas
que tanto te gustaban;
para siempre has perdido
todos tus lujos y riquezas!»
15 Los que negociaban con esas cosas y se hicieron ricos a costa de la ciudad, se quedarán lejos por miedo a su castigo, llorando y lamentándose, 16 y dirán:
«¡Ay, ay de la gran ciudad!
Vestida de lino fino,
con ropas de color púrpura y rojo,
adornada con oro, perlas y piedras preciosas.
17 ¡Y en un instante se ha acabado tanta riqueza!»
Todos los capitanes de barco y los que navegan por la costa, los marineros y todos los que se ganan la vida en el mar, se quedaron lejos 18 y, al ver el humo del incendio de la ciudad, gritaron: «¿Qué otra ciudad podía compararse a esta gran ciudad?» 19 Y se echaron polvo en la cabeza, llorando y lamentándose, y gritaron:
«¡Ay, ay de la gran ciudad!
Con su riqueza se hicieron ricos
todos los que tenían barcos en el mar.
¡Y en un instante ha quedado destruida!»
20 Tú, oh cielo, alégrate
por causa de esa ciudad;
y alégrense ustedes, los del pueblo santo,
y los apóstoles y los profetas,
porque Dios, al condenarla,
les ha hecho justicia a ustedes.
21 Entonces un ángel poderoso levantó una piedra, que era como una gran piedra de molino, y lanzándola al mar dijo:
«Así serás tú echada abajo,
Babilonia, la gran ciudad,
y nunca más te volverán a ver.
22 Nunca más se oirá en tus calles
música de arpas, flautas y trompetas,
ni habrá en ti trabajadores de ningún oficio,
ni se oirá en ti el ruido de la piedra del molino.
23 Nunca más brillará en ti la luz de una lámpara,
ni se oirá en ti el bullicio de las fiestas de bodas.
Porque tus comerciantes eran los poderosos del mundo
y engañaste a todas las naciones con tus brujerías.»
24 Pues en esa ciudad se ha encontrado la sangre de los profetas y del pueblo santo, y de todos los que han sido asesinados en el mundo.

La destrucción de Babilonia
18 Después de esto, vi a otro ángel que bajaba del cielo con gran poder y la tierra se iluminó con su esplendor. 2 El ángel gritó muy fuerte:
«¡Ha sido destruida!
¡La gran ciudad de Babilonia ha sido destruida!
Ahora es un lugar para los demonios,
un lugar para toda clase de espíritus malignos.
Una ciudad llena de aves impuras
y de toda clase de animales sucios y abominables.
3 Pues ella hizo que todas las naciones bebieran
del vino de su pecado sexual y de la ira de Dios.
Los reyes de la tierra se acostaron con ella.
Los comerciantes se hicieron ricos con la extravagancia de sus lujos».
4 Después oí otra voz del cielo que decía:
«Pueblo mío, sal de esa ciudad
para que no compartas sus pecados.
Así no sufrirás ninguno de los desastres que llegarán a ella.
5 Los pecados de esa ciudad han llegado hasta el cielo.
Dios no ha olvidado todo lo malo que ella hizo.
6 Trátenla como ella trató a los demás,
y páguenle con el doble de lo que hizo.
Prepárenle un vino dos veces más fuerte
que el que ella preparó para los demás.
7 Denle tanto tormento y sufrimiento
como la gloria y el lujo que ella se dio a sí misma.
Pues se la pasa diciéndose:
“Soy una reina sentada en su trono.
No soy una viuda y nunca estaré de luto”.
8 Así que tan sólo en un día le caerán todas las plagas:
enfermedades, luto y hambre.
Ella será destruida con fuego
porque el Señor Dios que la juzgó es fuerte».
9 Los reyes de la tierra que cometieron pecado sexual con ella y que compartieron sus lujos, llorarán y se lamentarán cuando vean el humo de su cuerpo quemado. 10 Se quedarán lejos de ella por miedo a recibir su mismo sufrimiento, y le dirán:
«¡Qué terrible, muy terrible para ti, gran ciudad.
Poderosa ciudad de Babilonia,
tu castigo llegó tan solo en una hora!»
11 Los comerciantes del mundo también llorarán y se lamentarán por ella, porque ya nadie comprará sus mercancías. 12 Vendían oro, plata, piedras preciosas, perlas, ropa de lino y de seda, y tela púrpura y roja; toda clase de maderas fragantes, y objetos hechos de marfil, de madera fina, de bronce, de hierro y de mármol; 13 canela, especias aromáticas, incienso, mirra y perfumes; vino y aceite de oliva, harina fina y trigo, ganado y ovejas, caballos, carruajes, esclavos y almas de seres humanos. Y ellos dirán:
14 «¡Pobre de ti, Babilonia!
Ya no tienes todas las cosas buenas que tanto deseaste.
Toda tu riqueza y tus lujos han desaparecido.
Nunca más los recuperarás».
15 Los comerciantes que se habían vuelto ricos gracias a lo que le vendían a ella, se alejarán, pues tendrán miedo de recibir su mismo sufrimiento. Ellos llorarán y se lamentarán:
16 «¡Qué terrible!
¡Esto es muy terrible para la gran ciudad!
Se vestía con ropa de lino fino, de púrpura y de rojo.
Llevaba oro, piedras preciosas y perlas.
17 Todas sus riquezas fueron destruidas en tan sólo una hora».
Todos los capitanes de barco y todos los que viajaban por mar, los marineros y todos los que traficaban en el mar, se alejaron de Babilonia. 18 Cuando vieron que salía humo de ella, decían: «¡Nunca hubo una ciudad como esta gran ciudad!» 19 Luego, se echaron polvo sobre la cabeza, llorando y lamentándose:
«¡Qué terrible!
¡Esto es muy terrible para la gran ciudad!
Todos los que tenían barcos en el mar se enriquecieron gracias a ella,
¡pero fue destruida en tan sólo una hora!
20 ¡Oh, cielo, alégrate!
¡Alégrense el pueblo de Dios[a],
junto con los apóstoles y profetas
porque Dios castigó a la ciudad de Babilonia
por todo lo que les hizo a ustedes!»
21 Entonces, un ángel muy fuerte vino y tomó una piedra tan grande como una piedra de molino. La arrojó al mar y dijo:
«Así será derribada la gran ciudad de Babilonia.
Nunca más se le volverá a ver.
22 Nunca más se oirá en ti la música
de arpas, flautas, trompetas, ni cantantes.
Nunca más se encontrará en ti un artesano.
Nunca más se oirá el sonido de la piedra de molino.
23 En ti nunca más brillará
la luz de una lámpara.
Nunca más se escuchará
la voz de un novio o de una novia.
Tus comerciantes eran los más importantes de la tierra.
Todas las naciones fueron engañadas por tu magia.
24 Babilonia fue la culpable de la muerte de los profetas y del pueblo de Dios,
y de todos los que fueron asesinados en la tierra».

Lament Over Fallen Babylon
18 After this I saw another angel(A) coming down from heaven.(B) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(C) 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:
“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[a](D)
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(E)
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(F)
3 For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.(G)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,(H)
and the merchants of the earth grew rich(I) from her excessive luxuries.”(J)
Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
“‘Come out of her, my people,’[b](K)
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(L)
5 for her sins are piled up to heaven,(M)
and God has remembered(N) her crimes.
6 Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back(O) double(P) for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(Q)
7 Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(R)
In her heart she boasts,
‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[c]
I will never mourn.’(S)
8 Therefore in one day(T) her plagues will overtake her:
death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(U)
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall
9 “When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(V) and shared her luxury(W) see the smoke of her burning,(X) they will weep and mourn over her.(Y) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(Z) and cry:
11 “The merchants(AC) of the earth will weep and mourn(AD) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(AE)— 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(AF) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(AG)
14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her(AH) will stand far off,(AI) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn(AJ) 16 and cry out:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AK)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(AL)
17 In one hour(AM) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(AN)
“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(AO) will stand far off.(AP) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(AQ) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(AR)?’(AS) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(AT) and with weeping and mourning(AU) cry out:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AV)
where all who had ships on the sea
became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(AW)
20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(AX)
Rejoice, you people of God!
Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(AY)
The Finality of Babylon’s Doom
21 Then a mighty angel(AZ) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(BA) and said:
“With such violence
the great city(BB) of Babylon will be thrown down,
never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(BC)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(BD)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(BE)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(BF)
By your magic spell(BG) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(BH)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(BI)

18 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.
15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
