Amos 9
English Standard Version
The Destruction of Israel
9 I saw the Lord standing beside[a] the altar, and he said:
(A)“Strike the capitals until (B)the thresholds (C)shake,
(D)and shatter them on the heads of all the people;[b]
and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword;
(E)not one of them shall flee away;
not one of them shall escape.
2 (F)“If they dig into Sheol,
from there shall my hand take them;
(G)if they climb up to heaven,
from there I will bring them down.
3 If they hide themselves on (H)the top of Carmel,
from there I will search them out and take them;
(I)and if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea,
there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
4 (J)And if they go into captivity before their enemies,
there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;
(K)and I will fix my eyes upon them
for evil and not for good.”
5 The Lord God of hosts,
he who touches the earth and (L)it melts,
and all who dwell in it mourn,
(M)and all of it rises like the Nile,
(N)and sinks again, like the Nile of Egypt;
6 (O)who builds his upper chambers in the heavens
and founds his vault upon the earth;
(P)who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out upon the surface of the earth—
(Q)the Lord is his name.
7 “Are you not like (R)the Cushites to me,
O people of Israel?” declares the Lord.
(S)“Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt,
and (T)the Philistines from (U)Caphtor and the Syrians from (V)Kir?
8 Behold, (W)the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom,
and I will destroy it from the surface of the ground,
(X)except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.
9 “For behold, I will command,
(Y)and shake the house of Israel among all the nations
as one shakes with a sieve,
but no pebble shall fall to the earth.
10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword,
who say, (Z)‘Disaster shall not overtake or meet us.’
The Restoration of Israel
11 “In that day (AA)I will raise up
the booth of David that is fallen
and repair its breaches,
and raise up its ruins
and rebuild it as in the days of old,
12 (AB)that they may possess the remnant of Edom
and (AC)all the nations who are called by my name,”[c]
declares the Lord who does this.
13 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
(AD)“when the plowman shall overtake the reaper
and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed;
(AE)the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and all the hills shall flow with it.
14 (AF)I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel,
and (AG)they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;
(AH)they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine,
and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 (AI)I will plant them on their land,
(AJ)and they shall never again be uprooted
out of the land (AK)that I have given them,”
says the Lord your God.

The Lord is powerful
9 Then I saw a vision of the Lord. He was standing beside the altar in the temple. The Lord said, ‘Hit the tops of the pillars so that the whole foundation shakes! Cause the building to fall on the heads of all the people. If anyone is still alive after that, I will cause them to die in battle. Nobody will escape! 2 They might try to dig deep into the earth to save themselves. But my strong hand will pull them out of there. They might climb up into the sky. But I will pull them down from there. 3 They might try to hide on the top of Mount Carmel. But I will find them and I will take them from there. They might try to hide from me deep down in the sea. But I will command the great sea snake to bite them. 4 Even when their enemies take them away as prisoners, I will cause them to die in battle. I have decided to destroy them. I will not help them.’
5 The Lord God Almighty will do this! When he touches the earth, it shakes. Everyone who lives there weeps. The ground rises up, like the water of the Nile river in Egypt. Then it goes down again, like the river. 6 The Lord builds his palace up into heaven, with its foundation on the earth. He takes up the water from the sea, and he pours it out on the earth as rain. The Lord is his name.
7 The Lord says, ‘You Israelite people, do not think that you are more important to me than the people of Ethiopia. It is true that I led you safely out of Egypt. But I also brought the Philistines from Crete. And I brought the Aramean people from Kir. 8 I, the Lord God, am carefully watching you Israelites. I see that you are a wicked nation, so I will remove you from the earth. But I will not completely destroy all the descendants of Jacob.’ That is what the Lord says.
9 ‘Listen to me! I will cause trouble to come to Israel's family, as they live among other nations. It will be like a person who shakes a sieve to remove dirt from grain. 10 Those among my people who do bad things will die. They say, “God will not send trouble to us. Nothing bad will happen to us.” But their enemies will kill those bad people in war.’
The Israelites will be strong again
11 The Lord says, ‘When that time comes, I will make David's kingdom strong again. It has become like a broken hut, but I will repair it. I will cause it to become as good and strong as it was when king David ruled. 12 You Israelites will fight the Edomites who still remain. You will win against them and the other nations that once belonged to me.’
That is what the Lord says, and he will do it.
13 The Lord says, ‘The time will come when food will grow very well in your fields. People will need to work quickly to cut down all their crops before they plough the ground to plant again. Lots of grapes will grow on your vines. People will work quickly to make wine from the grapes before they plant new vines. So much juice will pour out of the grapes that it will run down the hills!
14 I will bring the people of Israel, my people, back to their own land. Enemies destroyed their cities, but now my people will build them again. They will live safely in them. My people will plant vines. They will drink wine from their grapes. They will eat the fruit from trees that they have planted in their gardens. 15 And I will plant my people in their own land. That is the land that I have given to them, and nobody will ever pull them out of that land.’
That is what the Lord your God says.

Israel Will Be Destroyed
9 I saw the Lord standing by the altar. He said:
“Smash the top of the pillars
so that even the bottom of the doors will shake.
Make the pillars fall on the people’s heads.
Anyone left alive I will kill with a sword.
Not one person will get away.
No one will escape.
2 If they dig down as deep as where the dead are,
I will pull them up from there.
If they climb up into the skies,
I will bring them down from there.
3 If they hide at the top of Mount Carmel,
I will find them and take them away.
If they try to hide from me at the bottom of the sea,
I will command a snake to bite them.
4 If they are captured and taken away by their enemies,
I will command the sword to kill them.
I will keep watch over them.
But I will keep watch to give them trouble, not to do them good.”
5 The Master, the Lord of heaven’s armies, will touch the land.
And the land will shake.
Then everyone who lives in the land will cry for the dead.
The whole land will rise like the Nile River.
It will fall like the river of Egypt.
6 The Lord built his upper rooms above the skies.
He sets their foundations on the earth.
He calls for the waters of the sea.
He pours them out on the land.
The Lord is his name.
7 The Lord says this:
“Israel, you are no different to me than the people of Cush.
I brought Israel out of the land of Egypt.
I also brought the Philistines from Crete
and the Arameans from Kir.
8 I, the Lord God, am watching the sinful kingdom Israel.
I will destroy Israel
from the earth’s surface.
But I will not completely destroy
Jacob’s descendants,” says the Lord.
9 “I am giving the command
to scatter the nation of Israel among all nations.
It will be like someone sifting flour.
A person shakes flour through a sifter.
The good flour falls through, but not the bad clumps.
10 Sinners among my people
will die by the sword.
All of them say,
‘Nothing bad will happen to us.’
The Lord Promises to Restore Israel
11 “The kingdom of David is like a fallen tent.
But in that day I will set it up again
and mend its broken places.
I will rebuild its ruins.
I will rebuild it as it was before.
12 Then Israel will take over what is left of Edom
and the other nations that belong to me,”
says the Lord.
And he will make it happen.
13 The Lord says, “The time is coming when there will be plenty of food.
A person will still be harvesting his crops
when it’s time to plow again.
A person will still be taking the juice from his grapes
when it’s time to plant again.
Sweet wine will drip from the mountains.
And it will pour from the hills.
14 I will bring my people Israel back from captivity.
They will build the ruined cities again.
And they will live in them.
They will plant vineyards and drink the wine from them.
They will plant gardens and eat their fruit.
15 I will plant my people on their land.
And they will not be pulled out again
from the land which I have given them,”
says the Lord your God.
