A Basket of Ripe Fruit

This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) a basket of ripe fruit. “What do you see,(B) Amos?(C)” he asked.

“A basket(D) of ripe fruit,” I answered.

Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(E)

“In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing.[a](F) Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!(G)

Hear this, you who trample the needy
    and do away with the poor(H) of the land,(I)

saying,

“When will the New Moon(J) be over
    that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath be ended
    that we may market(K) wheat?”(L)
skimping on the measure,
    boosting the price
    and cheating(M) with dishonest scales,(N)
buying the poor(O) with silver
    and the needy for a pair of sandals,
    selling even the sweepings with the wheat.(P)

The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob:(Q) “I will never forget(R) anything they have done.(S)

“Will not the land tremble(T) for this,
    and all who live in it mourn?
The whole land will rise like the Nile;
    it will be stirred up and then sink
    like the river of Egypt.(U)

“In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord,

“I will make the sun go down at noon
    and darken the earth in broad daylight.(V)
10 I will turn your religious festivals(W) into mourning
    and all your singing into weeping.(X)
I will make all of you wear sackcloth(Y)
    and shave(Z) your heads.
I will make that time like mourning for an only son(AA)
    and the end of it like a bitter day.(AB)

11 “The days are coming,”(AC) declares the Sovereign Lord,
    “when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
    but a famine(AD) of hearing the words of the Lord.(AE)
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
    and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the Lord,
    but they will not find it.(AF)

13 “In that day

“the lovely young women and strong young men(AG)
    will faint because of thirst.(AH)
14 Those who swear by the sin of Samaria(AI)
    who say, ‘As surely as your god lives, Dan,’(AJ)
    or, ‘As surely as the god[b] of Beersheba(AK) lives’—
    they will fall,(AL) never to rise again.(AM)

Israel to Be Destroyed

I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and he said:

“Strike the tops of the pillars
    so that the thresholds shake.
Bring them down on the heads(AN) of all the people;
    those who are left I will kill with the sword.
Not one will get away,
    none will escape.(AO)
Though they dig down to the depths below,(AP)
    from there my hand will take them.
Though they climb up to the heavens above,(AQ)
    from there I will bring them down.(AR)
Though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel,(AS)
    there I will hunt them down and seize them.(AT)
Though they hide from my eyes at the bottom of the sea,(AU)
    there I will command the serpent(AV) to bite them.(AW)
Though they are driven into exile by their enemies,
    there I will command the sword(AX) to slay them.

“I will keep my eye on them
    for harm(AY) and not for good.(AZ)(BA)

The Lord, the Lord Almighty—
he touches the earth and it melts,(BB)
    and all who live in it mourn;
the whole land rises like the Nile,
    then sinks like the river of Egypt;(BC)
he builds his lofty palace[c](BD) in the heavens
    and sets its foundation[d] on the earth;
he calls for the waters of the sea
    and pours them out over the face of the land—
    the Lord is his name.(BE)

“Are not you Israelites
    the same to me as the Cushites[e]?”(BF)
declares the Lord.
“Did I not bring Israel up from Egypt,
    the Philistines(BG) from Caphtor[f](BH)
    and the Arameans from Kir?(BI)

“Surely the eyes of the Sovereign Lord
    are on the sinful kingdom.
I will destroy(BJ) it
    from the face of the earth.
Yet I will not totally destroy
    the descendants of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.(BK)
“For I will give the command,
    and I will shake the people of Israel
    among all the nations
as grain(BL) is shaken in a sieve,(BM)
    and not a pebble will reach the ground.(BN)
10 All the sinners among my people
    will die by the sword,(BO)
all those who say,
    ‘Disaster will not overtake or meet us.’(BP)

Israel’s Restoration

11 “In that day

“I will restore David’s(BQ) fallen shelter(BR)
    I will repair its broken walls
    and restore its ruins(BS)
    and will rebuild it as it used to be,(BT)
12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom(BU)
    and all the nations that bear my name,[g](BV)
declares the Lord, who will do these things.(BW)

13 “The days are coming,”(BX) declares the Lord,

“when the reaper(BY) will be overtaken by the plowman(BZ)
    and the planter by the one treading(CA) grapes.
New wine(CB) will drip from the mountains
    and flow from all the hills,(CC)
14     and I will bring(CD) my people Israel back from exile.[h](CE)

“They will rebuild the ruined cities(CF) and live in them.
    They will plant vineyards(CG) and drink their wine;
    they will make gardens and eat their fruit.(CH)
15 I will plant(CI) Israel in their own land,(CJ)
    never again to be uprooted(CK)
    from the land I have given them,”(CL)

says the Lord your God.(CM)

Obadiah’s Vision(CN)(CO)

The vision(CP) of Obadiah.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom(CQ)

We have heard a message from the Lord:
    An envoy(CR) was sent to the nations to say,
“Rise, let us go against her for battle”(CS)

“See, I will make you small(CT) among the nations;
    you will be utterly despised.
The pride(CU) of your heart has deceived you,
    you who live in the clefts of the rocks[i](CV)
    and make your home on the heights,
you who say to yourself,
    ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’(CW)
Though you soar like the eagle
    and make your nest(CX) among the stars,
    from there I will bring you down,”(CY)
declares the Lord.(CZ)
“If thieves came to you,
    if robbers in the night—
oh, what a disaster awaits you!—
    would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
If grape pickers came to you,
    would they not leave a few grapes?(DA)
But how Esau will be ransacked,
    his hidden treasures pillaged!
All your allies(DB) will force you to the border;
    your friends will deceive and overpower you;
those who eat your bread(DC) will set a trap for you,[j]
    but you will not detect it.

“In that day,” declares the Lord,
    “will I not destroy(DD) the wise men of Edom,
    those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?
Your warriors, Teman,(DE) will be terrified,
    and everyone in Esau’s mountains
    will be cut down in the slaughter.
10 Because of the violence(DF) against your brother Jacob,(DG)
    you will be covered with shame;
    you will be destroyed forever.(DH)
11 On the day you stood aloof
    while strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
    and cast lots(DI) for Jerusalem,
    you were like one of them.(DJ)
12 You should not gloat(DK) over your brother
    in the day of his misfortune,(DL)
nor rejoice(DM) over the people of Judah
    in the day of their destruction,(DN)
nor boast(DO) so much
    in the day of their trouble.(DP)
13 You should not march through the gates of my people
    in the day of their disaster,
nor gloat over them in their calamity(DQ)
    in the day of their disaster,
nor seize their wealth
    in the day of their disaster.
14 You should not wait at the crossroads
    to cut down their fugitives,(DR)
nor hand over their survivors
    in the day of their trouble.

15 “The day of the Lord is near(DS)
    for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
    your deeds(DT) will return upon your own head.
16 Just as you drank(DU) on my holy hill,(DV)
    so all the nations will drink(DW) continually;
they will drink and drink
    and be as if they had never been.(DX)
17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;(DY)
    it will be holy,(DZ)
    and Jacob will possess his inheritance.(EA)
18 Jacob will be a fire
    and Joseph a flame;
Esau will be stubble,
    and they will set him on fire(EB) and destroy(EC) him.
There will be no survivors(ED)
    from Esau.”
The Lord has spoken.

19 People from the Negev will occupy
    the mountains of Esau,
and people from the foothills will possess
    the land of the Philistines.(EE)
They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,(EF)
    and Benjamin(EG) will possess Gilead.
20 This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan
    will possess the land as far as Zarephath;(EH)
the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
    will possess the towns of the Negev.(EI)
21 Deliverers(EJ) will go up on[k] Mount Zion
    to govern the mountains of Esau.
    And the kingdom will be the Lord’s.(EK)
