8 Detta är vad Herren, Herren, visade mig: en korg med mogen frukt. 2 Han frågade: ”Vad ser du, Amos?” Jag svarade: ”En korg med mogen frukt.” Då sa Herren: Tiden är nu mogen för mitt folk Israel. Jag vill inte skona dem längre.
3 Den dagen, säger Herren, Herren, ska sångerna i palatset förvandlas till klagan. Döda kroppar ska ligga utslängda överallt. – Tystnad![a]
4 Lyssna, ni som trampar på de fattiga
och vill utplåna de förtryckta i landet!
5 Ni säger:
”När är nymånadsfesten över,
så att vi kan sälja säd,
och sabbaten,
så att vi kan öppna vetesmagasinet?”
Då ska vi minska måtten,
höja priserna
och fuska med vikterna,
6 köpa de fattiga för silver
och de hjälpbehövande för ett par skor
och sälja spillsäden som vete.
7 Herren har svurit vid Jakobs stolthet: ”Aldrig ska jag glömma något av vad de gjort!
8 Skulle inte jorden skälva för det här
och alla som bor där sörja?
Skulle inte hela jorden höja sig som Nilen[b],
röras upp och sjunka igen, som Egyptens flod?
9 Den dagen, säger Herren, Herren,
ska jag låta solen gå ner vid middagstid
och lägga jorden i mörker mitt på dagen.
10 Jag ska förvandla era fester till sorg
och era sånger till klagan.
Jag ska klä allas höfter i säcktyg
och raka allas huvuden.
Jag ska låta det bli som sorgetiden efter den ende sonen
och låta det sluta som en bitter dag.
11 Den tid kommer, säger Herren, Herren,
när jag sänder hungersnöd över landet,
inte en hunger efter bröd, inte en törst efter vatten,
utan efter att få höra Herrens ord.
12 De ska irra från hav till hav,
driva omkring från norr till öster
och söka efter Herrens ord
utan att finna det.
13 Den dagen ska vackra flickor och unga män
mattas av törst,
14 de som svär vid Samariens skuld
och säger: ’Så sant din gud lever, Dan!’
och: ’Så sant Beer Shevas starkhet[c] lever!’
De ska falla för att aldrig mer resa sig.”

8 Esto es lo que el Señor y Dios me mostró: una canasta de fruta madura 2 y me preguntó: «¿Qué ves, Amós?».
«Una canasta de fruta madura», respondí.
Entonces el Señor me dijo:
«Ha llegado el tiempo de que Israel caiga como fruta madura; no volveré a perdonarlo.
3 »En aquel día —afirma el Señor y Dios—, las canciones del palacio se volverán lamentos. ¡Muchos serán los cadáveres tirados por todas partes! ¡Silencio!».
4 Oigan esto, los que pisotean a los necesitados
y exterminan a los pobres de la tierra.
5 Ustedes dicen:
«¿Cuándo pasará la fiesta de luna nueva
para que podamos vender grano
o el día de reposo
para que pongamos a la venta el trigo?».
Ustedes buscan achicar la medida
y aumentar el precio,
falsear las balanzas
6 y vender los deshechos del grano,
comprar al desvalido por dinero
y al necesitado, por un par de sandalias.
7 El Señor ha jurado por el orgullo de Jacob: «Jamás olvidaré nada de lo que han hecho.
8 »¿Y con todo esto no temblará la tierra?
¿No se enlutarán sus habitantes?
Subirá la tierra entera como el Nilo;
se agitará y bajará,
como el río de Egipto.
9 »En aquel día», afirma el Señor y Dios,
«haré que el sol se ponga al mediodía
y que en pleno día la tierra se oscurezca.
10 Convertiré en luto sus fiestas religiosas
y en cantos fúnebres todas sus canciones.
Los vestiré de luto
y afeitaré su cabeza.
Será como si lloraran la muerte de un hijo único
y terminarán el día en amargura.
11 »Vienen días», afirma el Señor y Dios,
«en que enviaré hambre al país;
no será hambre de pan ni sed de agua,
sino hambre de oír las palabras del Señor.
12 La gente vagará sin rumbo de mar a mar;
andarán errantes del norte al este,
buscando la palabra del Señor,
pero no la encontrarán.
13 En aquel día se desmayarán de sed
las jóvenes hermosas y los jóvenes fuertes.
14 Y caerán para no levantarse jamás
los que juran por la culpa[a] de Samaria,
los que dicen: “¡Tan cierto como que tu dios vive, oh Dan!
¡Tan cierto como que tu dios vive, Berseba!”».[b]

A Basket of Ripe Fruit
8 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) a basket of ripe fruit. 2 “What do you see,(B) Amos?(C)” he asked.
“A basket(D) of ripe fruit,” I answered.
Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(E)
3 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing.[a](F) Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!(G)”
5 saying,
“When will the New Moon(J) be over
that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath be ended
that we may market(K) wheat?”(L)—
skimping on the measure,
boosting the price
and cheating(M) with dishonest scales,(N)
6 buying the poor(O) with silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
selling even the sweepings with the wheat.(P)
7 The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob:(Q) “I will never forget(R) anything they have done.(S)
8 “Will not the land tremble(T) for this,
and all who live in it mourn?
The whole land will rise like the Nile;
it will be stirred up and then sink
like the river of Egypt.(U)
9 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.(V)
10 I will turn your religious festivals(W) into mourning
and all your singing into weeping.(X)
I will make all of you wear sackcloth(Y)
and shave(Z) your heads.
I will make that time like mourning for an only son(AA)
and the end of it like a bitter day.(AB)
11 “The days are coming,”(AC) declares the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
but a famine(AD) of hearing the words of the Lord.(AE)
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.(AF)
