A visão da locusta, do fogo e do prumo
7 O Senhor Jeová assim me fez ver: eis que ele formava gafanhotos no princípio do rebento da erva serôdia, e eis que era a erva serôdia depois da segada do rei. 2 E aconteceu que, como eles tivessem comido completamente a erva da terra, eu disse: Senhor Jeová, perdoa; como se levantará agora Jacó? Pois ele é pequeno. 3 Então, o Senhor se arrependeu disso. Não acontecerá, disse o Senhor.
4 Assim me mostrou o Senhor Jeová: eis que o Senhor Jeová clamava que queria contender por meio do fogo; e consumiu o grande abismo e também queria consumir a terra. 5 Então, eu disse: Senhor Jeová, cessa agora; como se levantará Jacó? Pois ele é pequeno. 6 E o Senhor se arrependeu disso. Nem isso acontecerá, disse o Senhor Jeová.
7 Mostrou-me também assim: eis que o Senhor estava sobre um muro levantado a prumo; e tinha um prumo na sua mão. 8 E o Senhor me disse: Que vês tu, Amós? E eu disse: Um prumo. Então, disse o Senhor: Eis que eu porei o prumo no meio do meu povo Israel; nunca mais passarei por ele. 9 Mas os altos de Isaque serão assolados, e destruídos os santuários de Israel; e levantar-me-ei com a espada contra a casa de Jeroboão.
10 Então, Amazias, o sacerdote de Betel, mandou dizer a Jeroboão, rei de Israel: Amós tem conspirado contra ti, no meio da casa de Israel; a terra não poderá sofrer todas as suas palavras. 11 Porque assim diz Amós: Jeroboão morrerá à espada, e Israel certamente será levado para fora da sua terra em cativeiro. 12 Depois, Amazias disse a Amós: Vai-te, ó vidente, foge para a terra de Judá, e ali come o pão, e ali profetiza; 13 mas, em Betel, daqui por diante, não profetizarás mais, porque é o santuário do rei e a casa do reino.
14 E respondeu Amós e disse a Amazias: Eu não era profeta, nem filho de profeta, mas boieiro e cultivador de sicômoros. 15 Mas o Senhor me tirou de após o gado e o Senhor me disse: Vai e profetiza ao meu povo Israel. 16 Ora, pois, ouve a palavra do Senhor. Tu dizes: Não profetizarás contra Israel, nem falarás contra a casa de Isaque. 17 Portanto, assim diz o Senhor: Tua mulher se prostituirá na cidade, e teus filhos e tuas filhas cairão à espada, e a tua terra será repartida a cordel, e tu morrerás na terra imunda, e Israel certamente será levado cativo para fora da sua terra.

Locusts, Fire and a Plumb Line
7 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) He was preparing swarms of locusts(B) after the king’s share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up. 2 When they had stripped the land clean,(C) I cried out, “Sovereign Lord, forgive! How can Jacob survive?(D) He is so small!(E)”
3 So the Lord relented.(F)
“This will not happen,” the Lord said.(G)
4 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: The Sovereign Lord was calling for judgment by fire;(H) it dried up the great deep and devoured(I) the land. 5 Then I cried out, “Sovereign Lord, I beg you, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!(J)”
6 So the Lord relented.(K)
“This will not happen either,” the Sovereign Lord said.(L)
7 This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb,[a] with a plumb line[b] in his hand. 8 And the Lord asked me, “What do you see,(M) Amos?(N)”
“A plumb line,(O)” I replied.
Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(P)
9 “The high places(Q) of Isaac will be destroyed
and the sanctuaries(R) of Israel will be ruined;
with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.(S)”
Amos and Amaziah
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel(T) sent a message to Jeroboam(U) king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy(V) against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words.(W) 11 For this is what Amos is saying:
“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword,
and Israel will surely go into exile,(X)
away from their native land.’”(Y)
12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer!(Z) Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.(AA) 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel,(AB) because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple(AC) of the kingdom.(AD)”
14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet(AE) nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees.(AF) 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock(AG) and said to me, ‘Go,(AH) prophesy(AI) to my people Israel.’(AJ) 16 Now then, hear(AK) the word of the Lord. You say,
“‘Do not prophesy against(AL) Israel,
and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’
17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:

Visão dos gafanhotos
7 Foi isto que o Senhor Soberano me mostrou numa visão: ele se preparava para enviar sobre a terra um exército de gafanhotos. Isso foi depois que a porção do rei havia sido colhida dos campos, quando brotava a colheita principal. 2 Em minha visão, os gafanhotos comeram todas as plantas da terra. Então eu disse: “Ó Senhor Soberano, perdoa-nos! Do contrário, não sobreviveremos, pois Israel[a] é muito pequeno”.
3 Então o Senhor voltou atrás e disse: “O que você viu não acontecerá”.
Visão do fogo
4 Foi isto que o Senhor Soberano me mostrou em outra visão: ele se preparava para castigar seu povo com um grande fogo. O fogo havia consumido as profundezas do mar e devorava toda a terra. 5 Então eu disse: “Ó Senhor Soberano, imploro-te que pares. Do contrário, não sobreviveremos, pois Israel é muito pequeno”.
6 Então o Senhor Soberano voltou atrás e disse: “Isso também não acontecerá”.
Visão do prumo
7 Foi isto que ele me mostrou em outra visão: o Senhor estava em pé, junto a um muro que havia sido construído usando-se um prumo, e segurava o prumo em sua mão. 8 O Senhor me perguntou: “Amós, o que você vê?”.
Respondi: “Um prumo”.
Então o Senhor disse: “Provarei meu povo com este prumo. Não fecharei mais os olhos para o que fazem. 9 Os santuários idólatras de seus antepassados[b] ficarão em ruínas, e os lugares de adoração de Israel serão destruídos; trarei a espada contra a dinastia de Jeroboão”.
10 Então Amazias, sacerdote de Betel, enviou uma mensagem a Jeroboão, rei de Israel: “Amós conspira contra o rei aqui mesmo, no meio do povo, falando coisas intoleráveis! 11 Assim diz ele: ‘Em breve Jeroboão será morto pela espada, e o povo de Israel será enviado para o exílio’”.
12 Então Amazias ordenou a Amós: “Vá embora daqui, profeta! Volte para a terra de Judá e ganhe a vida profetizando ali! 13 Não nos incomode com suas profecias aqui em Betel. Este é o santuário do rei e o lugar de adoração de todo o reino!”.
14 Amós respondeu: “Não sou profeta e nunca fui treinado para ser profeta.[c] Sou apenas um boiadeiro e colhedor de figos. 15 Mas o Senhor me tirou de junto de meu rebanho e disse: ‘Vá e profetize a meu povo, Israel’. 16 Agora, portanto, ouça esta mensagem do Senhor:
“Você diz:
‘Não profetize contra Israel;
pare de pregar contra meu povo’.[d]
17 Mas assim diz o Senhor:
‘Sua esposa se tornará prostituta nesta cidade,
e seus filhos e filhas serão mortos pela espada.
Sua terra será dividida,
e você morrerá em terra estrangeira.
E o povo de Israel certamente será levado para o exílio,
para longe de sua terra natal’”.

7 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.
2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
3 The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.
4 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
5 Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
6 The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.
7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
8 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.
14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
